’m sitting here, on a Sunday morning, hardly able to believe that I’m writing September’s introduction – where has the summer gone? For me it has flown past, but not without some wonderful moments. Last month I watched two close friends get married, and it was a lovely day, reminding me of my own wedding (which now feels like a decade ago). I’ve decided it’s my favourite thing to do – watch two people, who are very much in love, enjoying their day with friends and family. I wish them all the very best (not that they need it).

It’s been a particularly busy month for us at Discovering Whittlesea, and that is because we have some very exciting news. Our family has grown (no, I’m not having a baby) but we have increased our portfolio with the a new magazine, Discovering Bourne. Much like this one, Bourne will be focusing on local news and stories, brought to the lovely people of Bourne by a team of local writers. But don’t worry, this won’t affect your local magazine because we have a dedicated team, local to Bourne, who will be doing all of the hard work. We couldn’t have made this leap without the success of our Whittlesey magazine, and without the support of our readers and advertisers – so thank you all. However if you see me, half asleep, walking through Whittlesey, you’ll know I’m on deadline for both magazines!

September is a very exciting month, in particular, it’s finally time for the Whittlesey Festival. Last year was such a success, that I am in no doubt it will be even bigger and better. Make a date on Sunday 11th of September and I will see you there!

This month there is a FREE talk on arthritis, by the wonderful team at Whittlesey Osteopaths. If this topic is of interest, then make sure you sign up at our local library. The talk is being held on the 17th of September, between 3 and 4pm. See page 31 for more information.

All that leaves me to say is to enjoy this month’s magazine, make sure you keep it for all those useful local numbers and have a lovely September. Finally I would like to say a GREAT BIG CONGRATULATIONS to all students who received their GCSEs and A-Level results this month.

Local RSPCA Shop Celebrates 25 years

It was then a very small shop, which is now their back workroom, but they managed to keep it well stocked with donations from the residents of Whittlesey. After 19 years Beryl asked the RSPCA if they would like to take it on. The Peterborough & District Branch of the RSPCA now run the shop (much expanded as it now includes the adjoining property) with a manager, deputy manager and a group of dedicated volunteers. The help from the volunteers is essential and the shop could not run without them. The Peterborough & District branch of the RSPCA is a stand alone Charity which receives no funding from the Government or the national RSPCA, and as such has to raise funds to look after the abandoned and ill-treated animals in their care. The Whittlesey Charity shop has provided a great amount of these funds over the years. Everybody is welcomeThe Whittlesey RSPCA shop is inviting their

customers on the morning of the 25th October, between 10am and 12 noon, to share a drink with the team and celebrate their 25th birthday.

On Wednesday 6th July 2011 I was invited to visit Whittlesey and had an excellent guided tour by its Mayor Councillor Kay Mayor. I was very impressed at the breadth of the Mayor’s knowledge of her Town and was not surprised to find she had been born and brought up in the area. On arrival at the new Council Office I met the Town Clerk, Sue Evans who also has a great knowledge of the Town and she was multi-tasking at a great rate! We firstly had an unscheduled visit to the Sir Harry Smith Community college to see an inspired exhibition by its pupils on the dangers of smoking at an early age. I was taken around the displays by three young ladies from year 10 who were a wonderful example of our youth today. I was fascinated to hear how they had developed the theme of the project and their knowledge of the subject was incredible. They are a great credit to their parents, the College and the Town and I thank them for the opportunity of seeing their work. We then had a fascinating visit to the Hanson Brickworks and a tour of the works. I was amazed to discover the many different designs and styles of Bricks which are produced at Whittlesey not least the mini brick the Mayor and I were presented with

High Sheriff of Cambridgeshire’s Reportto mark our visit. A visit to the allotments was next and I do congratulate the Town council for their efforts in improving the site a few years ago. I must say as a vegetable grower myself I was very impressed with the condition of the plots considering the very dry spring and early summer we have had and I do commend the tenants for a wonderful display of healthy veg. I met with a few of the allotment holders who were all hard at work at the never ending battle with weeds; they seem to grow whatever the weather! Finally we visited the Manor Leisure Centre and I was shown the new facilities which are currently being constructed. Together with the swimming pool and the other on site activities I am sure that this refurbishment will enhance the Centre. My impression of the Town could not be higher and I do congratulate all those who strive to improve and maintain the infrastructure for the residents. I am sure that the Town has its problems but from my brief visit I must say that the community spirit appeared in good heart and the future is in safe hands of its young people. With many thanks to the Mayor and all those people I had the honour of meeting on the day.

Children got messy painting a local muralAward winning arts organisation, Atelier East, have been working with families at Whittlesey Children's Centre this month to create inspiring and exciting murals.

'We were really delighted to be asked to deliver this project. We have met some lovely families and all of their brilliant ideas have been worked into the designs that we painted together. It’s very important to us that we work closely with the families and the centre to make sure they get something positive out of the project. We want them to share new experiences and learn through those experiences whilst having fun!' Explained Karen Harvey, Artistic Director of Atelier East. Bryonie Smith, manager at the Children's Centre, encouraged the children and their parents to take part as much as possible and allowed them free reign to use their imagination on the sheds in the playground. Three sheds have been decorated: one depicts a pretty summer meadow of flowers, whilst another has a monster truck on the front of it! The main mural on the largest shed shows two ponies in a stable and incorporates windows from a castle designed by one of the children, and butterflies and birds from others.Cllr Martin Curtis helped some of the youngsters to paint the mural, and it is hoped that he and Kay Mayor will attend an 'unveiling' ceremony later this year.

• Atelier East deliver creative arts projects across Fenland and beyond, and provide an all round service from consultancy to delivery, and can even help with funding applications for specific projects. You can find out more at www.atelier-east.co.uk or by calling the team on 01945 773915

a great selection and your purchase will be

going to a great cause.

A Cambridgeshire-based children’s hospice charity is celebrating after record-breaking first day sales. East Anglia’s Children’s Hospices (EACH) which cares for life-threatened children and their families across Cambridgeshire from its Milton hospice, opened a new shop at 5 Market Street, Whittlesey on Friday July 15. Eager shoppers crowded outside the shop, with the queue reaching all along Market Street to the Market Square, while Graham Butland, EACH Chief Executive, and Roy Gerstner, Whittlesey Town Councillor conducted a ribbon cutting ceremony. Trevor Bailey, Head of EACH Retail, said: “As usual with EACH shop openings, the crowd was worked up to fever pitch, and we were inundated with shoppers who couldn’t wait to get their hands on a bargain. “Sales hit an EACH first day record of £2,500, in glorious sunshine, and this was continued with a very solid £1,000 on Saturday, despite the very poor weather.“The shop looked magnificent and a special thank you must be made to Lorna Hazeltine, the shop manager, who together with Sarah Throssell, the retail manager and the Whittlesey team of volunteers, worked long and hard to get the shop ready. The Whittlesey shop brings our shop network to 13 shops across East Anglia.” Roy Gerstner, Whittlesey Town Councillor, said: “We’re delighted EACH has set up a shop in Whittlesey- It looks great and really has lifted this

area of the town. We wish them every success here.” To ensure the shop really is a success, EACH needs local

Got better things to spend your money on than electricity bills?Borrow an energy meter from any Cambridgeshire library free of charge and find out how you could cut your electricity bills by as much as 15%.The meters are easy and safe to use and show how much electricity is being used in your home at any one time. Using a meter can help you see just how much energy is used, for example, by lights in empty rooms, appliances on stand-by or boiling a full kettle. Armed with this information, studies show that households can reduce their

bills by 5 - 15% by making small changes to use less electricity. Ask to borrow a

meter at your local library today and start planning what to do with your savings!

It was a busy month for the Whittlesea Street Pride, including three cleaning events, partnering with Network Rail and Peterborough Probation Services. They were succesful in removing graffiti, rubbish and six tonnes of bracken, bramble and overgrown weed, all mulched for re-cycling. Unfortunately this only scratched the surface and it will take many more sessions to make a real impression. It’s not all work for our group; the annual Street Priders BBQ sponsored by Chairman Roy Gerstner, with 27 attending, enjoying a cold but pleasant afternoon at Feldale Lakes in Coates. They raised £100 towards their nominated charity ‘Macmillan Nurses’ – a very worthwhile cause. The team are very grateful to Anthea Head at Decker Bus and Dennis and Margaret Harris at Harris Transport for their continuing sponsorship of their Gateway projects at Station Road and Kings Delph. The next Gateway Project is progressing, the ‘Whittlesey Wildfowler’ another flower boat, willbe placed at Guildenburgh Crescent and the team’s latest litterpick in and around the centre of town, saw them collect 18 full bags of rubbish on a Sunday morning. So why not come along and join them; you’ll get some gentle exercise and meet new friends and there is no major commitment to come to every event. If you would like to help in any way, please contact Roy.Roy Gerstner, Chair Whittlesea StreetPride Groupt: 01733 208590 | e: [email protected]

Brian J Ford of Eastrea has a new book out this month. His first book on the Secret Weapons of World War II came out more than forty years ago, and Osprey Books of Oxford have now commissioned him to return to the subject. The book looks at some of the strange schemes from the war - a plan to turn Hitler into a woman by dosing his food with hormones, and to stick Nazi troops to the ground with bombs containing glue. The book also looks at thecode-breakers of Bletchley Park and discusses the importance of Cambridge University scientists in finding secret methods to defeat Germany. The new book comes out in Britain and America on the 20th September and will be available in all good bookshops, including W H Smith.

A word fromA word fromKay MayorHello again; this month’s report is not as long as I want to catch the deadline of the magazine before I go on holiday.

New Road School pupils visited the Town Hall and Council Chamber on 14th July as planned and on 20th July I visited the school to cut the ribbon at the new playground equipment which includes a climbing wall which has been funded by the Friends of the School. Unfortunately our MP, Steve Barclay was unable to join us as planned as he was called unexpectedly into Parliament. I know Steve was very sorry he could not be there and he will make every effort to go and have a look round the school soon. Our visitors from Stadt Nettetal arrived safely on Thursday 14th July and we spent a wonderful weekend with them. The visit ended on Monday morning and they faced the long coach journey back to Germany. We were all saddened to receive the news of the sudden death of a Fenland Council colleague from Wisbech, Roger Green, in a road accident on the afternoon of Monday 18th July. As Roger and his wife Margaret had hosted visitors from Germany that weekend we had enjoyed his company at all the social and civic activities. Roger will be greatly missed throughout Fenland. Unfortunately I was not able to open the new East Anglian Children’s Hospice (EACH) charity shop in Market Street on Friday 15th July due to previous commitments; however I wish them every success with their venture in Whittlesey. The Fenland Chairman’s Civic Reception was held on Friday 22nd July at the Boat House

in Wisbech and on this occasion I wore two hats; initially I was there as consort to Ken as Vice- Chairman of Fenland District Council, but I was also there as Mayor of Whittlesey and representing the Town. Saturday 23rd July saw a coffee morning to raise funds towards the Whittlesey Festival; this was a huge success and I congratulate Pauline and the Committee on a splendid turnout. Finally on the evening of 23rd July I attended the Celebration Concert at St Andrew’s Church; the City of Peterborough Concert Band performed splendidly and literally “raised the roof”. The Church was full and I congratulate the two churchwardens, Sarah Walker and David Mason on their foresight in arranging the concert. The Church has undergone extensive works and really looks superb. These works are by no means the end as St Andrew’s is hoping to eventually be able to install a kitchen and toilet facilities. This will obviously need to be financed and so the fund-raising continues. May I also take the opportunity to remind you that the next Town Councillor Surgery is Saturday 3rd September 2011, where there will be a Town & District Councillor present to answer any questions you may have. When you get to read this I will have returned from my holiday refreshed I hope and ready for the Whittlesey Festival on Sunday 11th September.

A word fromCouncil &

Church

What About Music In The Church? – Part 2In the previous issue I showed how attitudes to church worship began changing around A.D. 350 with some leaders speaking out against using instruments in worship. By A.D. 563 the Council Of Brage had forbidden all forms of singing except the Psalms of David, whilst the Roman Catholic church only permitted the singing of Gregorian Chants in Latin. The whole-hearted, joyful singing of the early church along with the instruments so widely used in those days was now being suppressed. As the church became more formal and liturgical, so creativity, reality and spirituality began to die and the church entered what became known as ‘The Dark Ages’. Fast forward to the Medieval Period (A.D. 600-1517) and the world outside the church saw giant leaps forward in the creation of new instruments as string, woodwind and percussion abounded. Sadly church worship grew ever more stagnant and something which the common man could not identify with or get inspired by. Martin Luther (A.D. 1483-1546) not only began what is known as ‘The Reformation Period’ he also gave the German people the Bible and worship songs

A word from“

A word from“

Cllr Martin Curtis

There is no doubt the biggest story of this year has been the riots of last month. Firstly, it is worth commenting that Cambridgeshire Officers were down in London helping deal with the riots and even though the problem spread, the very few issues there were in Cambridgeshire were nipped in the bud - they should be thanked on both counts.I could talk about the causes of the riots for ages. One of my political passions is deprivation - it is an area I study a great deal, but to me, lack of responsibility and respect as well as poor parenting are the root cause and, whilst we must recognise the need to deal with disadvantage, it has to be dealt with from the bottom up, with those three issues at the core. What was disappointing for me was the spat that blew up between senior police officers and politicians immediately afterwards. My initial view was that there was a serious problem with police leadership, but I have many friends in the non-political world who feel that the immediate reaction from politicians was also poor - so I suspect that both

in their own language. Luther was passionate about using the whole musical range, including harmony which was forbidden at the time, to once again create a fresh sound of vibrant and triumphant worship songs. He became isolated by the established church when he wrote new Christian based lyrics to German folk songs and popular music. Luther’s own hymn ‘A Mighty Fortress Is Our God’ became the battle hymn of that movement. While the tide was now turning for music in church there were still many obstacles to overcome and there was no shortage of those who wanted to speak evil of this new found musical freedom. Charles the First and Queen Mary banned both Psalms and Hymns from being sung in churches. History records how thousands would gather together outside after the service to sing praise to God. Even the king had to ultimately bow to this and lift the ban. The period between A.D. 1600-1800 saw great struggles to take church worship out of the musically restrictive ‘Dark Ages’ and broaden its scope. This is quite staggering really because we were only dealing with such things as ‘allowing organs and hymns of human origin’ (i.e. not just the Psalms or chants) to be used in church, not exactly revolutionary stuff by modern standards. However, some churches now began using these in their services. We will move into the modern period in the next issue.

have to hold their hands up - but both also have to recognise that we must not keep accepting the continuous disconnect that exists between politicians, the public and the police. That is why I believe the problems we saw last month make the case for elected Police Commissioners. A single political figurehead, who is accountable to the public for delivery will make sure that the police are more accountable to you rather than kow-towing to Westminster. Having someone who is able to make a statement in support of the police when the judiciary let them down is also important. A good Commissioner will also make sure the police have constant challenge and input about the way they work in a way that should be more connected to the people that the police and politicians serve - you. The debate about Police Commissioners has taken off since the riots - I am sure the end result will be a police service that people can have confidence in.I really would like to hear your views on this. Nancy Bowker

ancy was the last member of this important family to live in Whittlesey and it is interesting to look back to see how the Bowker family came to Whittlesey and the influence they had on the town and also the County. The Bowker family originated in Yaxley where a Thomas Bowker was baptised in 1660 and his son William was a fellmonger (tanner) in the village. Thomas Bowker, who acquired a farm in Whittlesey in 1814, was a great grandson of William the tanner. Thomas came to live here in June 1815, and was made Justice of the Peace for the Isle of Ely in 1825. Two years later he married Sarah Eagles Cowley at Winslow in Buckinghamshire and they came to live in the manor house where, over the years 12 children were born to them, of whom nine survived infancy. The eleventh child Francis, was born in 1841 and was Nancy’s grandfather. When Sir Harry Smith returned to Whittlesey following his success at the battle of Aliwal in Northern India on 30th June 1847 he was met at the railway station by a multitude of people and received an address given by Mr. Thomas Bowker. Four years later, Thomas was made Deputy Lieutenant for the County of Cambridgeshire. Thomas Bowker’s wife Sarah died in 1848 and Thomas was left with six sons for whom jobs had to be found. William and Thomas were articled to solicitors, Henry and Frederick obtained commissions in the army while Francis and Charles went to Canada to seek their fortunes. Francis and Charles settled in Lakefield and on a visit to friends in Toronto they took us out to Lakefield where we visited Christ Church, there in the churchyard we found the tiny graves of four of Francis and Margaret Ellen Bowker’s children. Francis returned to England in 1868 and had married Margaret Ellen Peed, his childhood friend and sister of the John Peed whose portrait hangs in the Town Hall. When showing the photographs taken in Lakefield, she told me that, like his father, Francis also had twelve children. ‘They didn’t hals go a rabbiting on’ was her apt comment. Francis was a very sensitive person and having witnessed some scalpings during an Indian uprising, he decided to bring his family back to England in 1881 to be in a safe environment. Consequently the last three children were born in England. John Weldon Bowker, the eleventh child and Nancy’s father was born in Lowestoft in 1883. Margaret Ellen, the mother of these children, died very shortly after the birth of the twelfth child at Norwich in 1885. Francis then returned to Whittlesey where his twelfth child died in 1886. The remaining children were looked after by his sisters Miss Catherine (Kate) Bowker and Mrs Sarah Weldon.

John Weldon Bowker became a solicitor and in 1922 married Miss Annie Wharton of Sheringham and they had two children, Nancy and a son Thomas who died in 1941 aged 16years. Their daughter Nancy, was educated at St. Felix School, Southwold and trained as a nurse at St. Thomas’ hospital London. When her father died in 1958 she was working as an Almoner at the Norfolk & Norwich hospital. She returned to Whittlesey to be with her mother and spent some time working in Personnel at the Perkins engine factory in Peterborough and later worked at County Hall in March with the Social Services Department of the Cambridgeshire County Council. Within the town Nancy followed in her great grandfather’s footsteps serving as a Justice of the Peace and inherited the Title of Lord of the Manor from her father, Nancy left Whittlesey to spend her retirement in Sherringham. Gradually leukaemia took its toll and she died in Cromer hospital on the 26th March 1999.

This bought to an end the long association of the Bowker family with the Town.

FISHING

Decoy Lakes Festival...

by K en Wade

Over the past few weeks the fishing around Whittlesey has been some of the best we have known for several years. The Fen

Drains have produced some cracking action topped by a fine 12lb plus tench taken from the Twenty Foot Drain. A couple of big carp have been taken from a very clear Glassmore Bank and with some wonderful pleasure fishing catches being taken along Whittlesey Dyke and Ashline Sluice there has been no shortage of fish. Officials at the Whittlesey club have been a little disappointed with the rather low attendance at their junior matches, perhaps next year a little more promotion before the event will see a few more young anglers on the bank, bear it in mind, there is always plenty of expert help on hand and the youngsters can pick up a lot of tips very quickly in a couple of sessions. This year’s aggregate trophy winner was Sam Boon with an overall aggregate weight of 7lb 8oz.

Our local still waters have been in full swing, Eldernell has been transformed by the new owners and is well worth a visit, Kingsland has seen lots of double figure carp taken and the Silver Fish Lake has also been in cracking form. Railway Lakes is another water that has seen a lot of local anglers enjoying a good days sport and a few new features

at Northey Bark has seen quite a few more anglers visiting the complex. As expected, Decoy lakes is the Mecca for match anglers from across the area right now there are very few local clubs that do not fish here regularly.

In the recent Decoy Lakes Festival huge weights were taken, Nigel Baxter broke the venue record with close to 300lb of carp but even that was not enough to stop John Whincup form winning the three day event.

Decoy Lakes owner Peter Band presenting the festival trophy to John Whincup.

Whittlesey rod Paul Wright, Mr Consistent in the clubs Saturday matches

The summer holidays seems to have flown by so quickly this year, although the weather has been very changeable at times we have seen enough of the sun to ensure quite a few anglers have been out and about on our local waters. Late summer is always one of the best times of the year for fishing, especially on our fenland drains. The bigger fish such as tench and bream are feeding up ready for the winter months and its prime time roach fishing. Cock Bank has been a real favourite for Whittlesey anglers this year, despite very little colour and flow the tench have really shown well with quiet a few anglers reporting big weights even in bright and sunny conditions. Top tip from those that have done well here is not to feed groundbait, instead tempt them with a few red maggots and the good old favourite for tench, worm. The Whittlesey Dyke is a renowned winter time fishery but well worth a visit right now, lots of small fish showing and the odd bream and skimmer to boost your weight. Above the locks at Ashline look out for the big chub on the hot pegs as you walk back towards the town, they will take some tempting on bread or a lob worm but worth a try. This is also one of the better waters to fish hemp seed or bread punch for the roach.Stillwaters in our area are in cracking form, Decoy Lakes is recognised as one of the best in Eastern England, but the likes of Railway lakes, Kingsland and Northey Park are all just as good in their own way, give them a try I do not think you will be disappointed. Sometimes its not all about huge weights, a days fishing in late summer on a quiet local water can be and indeed is, just as much fun, go on give it a try!

Policing your areaKeep safe with our monthly reports by An Hid Following a report of a fight taking place outside of a built up residential area, officers were quickly dispatched to the scene. On arrival, officers spoke to witnesses who saw the event taking place and as a result one person was arrested for inflicting Actual Bodily Harm ( ABH). After a member of the public called the police having seen three males acting suspiciously inside an industrial unit on Station Road, reactive officers, a

dog handler and the force helicopter were all dispatched. Thankfully by having a good description of the males, all three were located and arrested. This was a perfect example of how members of the public can assist the police. In my past few articles I have talked quite a lot about the results the Whittlesey Neighbourhood Policing Team have had relating to the crackdown of Cannabis in the area. Well I am pleased to say that we, as a neighbourhood policing team, have continued the success by having several people receive cautions for possession of the controlled substance. One male further received a caution for permitting the production of a class B drug in his home after thirteen cannabis plants were found inside his property. During the past month, police received a call from a member of the public reporting that they had a concern for a person in the street. On arrival the person was located and it was clear that they were very anti-police, which led to them being very abusive to the officers. Subsequently the person was arrested for a public order offence. Officers who were responding to a report of a domestic incident, whereby the male party had forced entry into a property and set fire to the bed of his partner, arrived at the location within minutes. Luckily the fire service was already on scene. An extensive search was carried out and it was not long before he was located. As a result of the successful search the male was arrested. I am pleased to say that the female party involved was not injured in any way.

his new document will help shape the future of Fenland by proposing areas for growth and regeneration in the district over the next 20 years. Not only does it outline where new housing developments might be, it also tackles other social issues, such as employment, infrastructure and healthy lifestyles.

The Fenland Communities Development Plan – draft Core Strategy is full of information on why and how the district might change in the future. There are also some objectives to explain what we aim to achieve and a set of draft policies setting out what and how much development should take place.

The aims include:• building 11,000 - 16,000 new homes between now and 2031, with large new housing areas on the edge of Wisbech, March and Chatteris• providing new land to attract new businesses and jobs• setting out policies to ensure development is high quality, sustainable and meets the needs of everyone• creating policies to ensure infrastructure such as play areas, new schools and better sewerage disposal is provided at the same time as new homes

The Council really wants to know what you think. This is your opportunity to help create

a vision for Fenland to maximise the district’s potential and deliver skills, jobs, dynamic town centres, vibrant villages, improved housing and infrastructure.

The consultation period will run from 29 July to 23 September 2011.

A monthly feature that focuses on current financial issues. Many local Banks and Building Societies have lost their ‘in house’ adviser and few are fully independent. Eamonn has worked and lived in Whittlesey for over 30 years.

Why is my pension worth less than I thought?

A tod

Dip PFS

‘I was told I’d be well off in retirement – what’s happened?’ commented a client of mine recently. He made a good point, having started saving in a pension scheme over 30 years ago, his original illustration used growth rates of 12% per year, and assumed contributions would increase by 5% each year.

In this case his fund has not grown by 12% each year and contributions remained the same as when he started it – £30 per month no longer buys a significant income in retirement, even after 30 years.

These days advisers use much more realistic about growth rates, and benefit statements include a degree of fine-tuning to take account of inflation. At least this client is not currently fighting against double digit inflation, which was the case when he took the plan out – but even now, inflation is a significant factor.

So what can be done when your plans are not working out as intended? Firstly establish the level of income and capital you require in retirement. Secondly get a realistic valuation of all the benefits including state pension and the options available in terms of when and how much

each arrangement can offer you. Thirdly – what other assets and options are available to you. Alternatively appoint a good adviser who can calculate any shortfall, calculate how tax will affect matters, then if a gap exists –

some options to consider.

What can you do if your retirment plans aren’t

working out - establish the level of income and capital you require in retirement

If any of the above is a concern for you I will be happy to provide a free initial consultation to help clear a

path through what can be a complexarea of financial planning

Tech monthly tips and advice from the wonderful team at SG

COMPUTING

Computing

BACKUPS CONTINUED

TalkAFTER LAST MONTHS ARTICLE ABOUT RAID I THOUGHT I WOULD JUST REMIND YOU THAT THERE ARE OTHER WAYS TO BACK UP YOUR DATA.Q

Two Reasons why data can be lost:• Hard Drive Failure o If your hard drive fails it might be recoverable by specialist engineers but this can be expensive. This is why it is good to make sure you keep a backup because it’s hard to tell if a hard drive is going to fail; sometimes software can tell you if a hard drive is failing or if the hard drive is physically making a noise usually a loud humming or clicking noise as the computer is running. If you have any issues like this you should get them checked out just to make sure that your hard drive is in good working order and backup immediately.

• Corruption o All files can get corrupted and for many different reasons, I. E. If you force off the computer while it’s booting or if it’s doing any loading of system files then they might get corrupted or damaged making the computer unable to boot up on next startup. This could also happen if you where accessing your important files and the computer suddenly turns off.

Need advice? Contact SG Computing

today

Solutions:• External Hard Drive/USB Memory Sticks o This is the most common way to easily backup all your important data and keep it safe, all you have to do is just copy your important files across onto to the hard drive or memory stick also known as a flash drive and then you’re done. There is software, which can also backup to an external hard drive automatically on a regular basis without any user input. Windows backup is a good example of some software, which can backup your files for you.

• RAID See last month’s article• Network Hard Drive o You can backup data using networked hard drives; these are hard drives which are located on a local network where all your data can be stored safely in another location. There is a downside to this however, speed transfer of backup files may take a longer time to upload and download but it can still be a low cost solution.

Any questions or help contact Nathan at S G Computing

Wha i ii?By Mayur Mistry & Ubhi Varsani (Registered Osteopaths)For the next three months we will be moving away from the lower back and exploring the world of arthritis.

Arthritis Talk (17th September between 3 and 4pm) The aim is to help you understand arthritis better and give you ideas on how to manage it. There are limited spaces, so please sign up in the library at the front desk.

D’ fre...

To help understand this complex topic, we are supplementing our article with a free talk on Saturday 17th September 2011, see bottom of page for details.

S e ’ e ste. The two types of arthritis that are commonly confused are: osteoarthritis and rheumatoid arthritis. So what’s the difference?

OsteoarthritisOsteoarthritis most commonly involves the larger weight bearing joints (such as the spine, hips and knees). It usually presents later in life (over 50 years) and is the result of wear and tear of the joints. This process involves wearing down of the cartilage which sits within the joint space. Osteoarthritis is hence part of our normal aging process, like our grey hair!!

Rheumatoid Arthritis Rheumatoid arthritis is a process that commonly affects the hands and feet. It usually presents between 30-40 years of age and is the result of our body’s immune system attacking the outer lining of our joints. Rheumatoid arthritis is therefore not part of the normal aging process but rather a disease process.

So to summarise osteoarthritis is a normal ageing process that predominantly affects large weight bearing joints whilst rheumatoid arthritis is a disease process which predominantly affect the hands and feet.

Next month we will go further and explain what exactly happens to the joints. Enjoy the sunshine and let’s hope it shines bright during the Whittlesey festival.

“Best Friends, Trust Us to Take Care of Your Best Friend”

There is often a preconception that Vets bills are very expensive, even if a visit is required simply for a pets annual vaccination booster. But why is that, is it because vets are actually very expense, is it because we have free healthcare for humans and so have nothing to reference the cost of pet care against or is it because a trip to the vets always results in a lump sum needing to be paid in one go?

Preventative care schemes vary

in what they offer and what

they cost

Most of us pay for the things we know we will need throughout the year in small monthly payments, things like insurance, utilities and taxes. So why not apply this to the cost of preventative care for your pet?

This is exactly what some Vets are now doing by offering their customers the option to pay a set amount by direct debit every month, that covers the cost of their pet/s basic preventative care for a whole year

So what is a years worth of preventative care? This will differ dependant on the species of your pet, however once your pet has had it’s initial vaccination course the below is a guide to what your Vet will normally recommend for basis preventative care.

Cats• Preventative flea treatment given monthly• Worming treatment given every 3 months• Vaccine booster against Flu, Enteritis and Leukaemia every year

Dogs• Preventative flea treatment given monthly• Worming treatment given every 3 months• Vaccine booster against Distemper, Canine Hepatitis, Adenovirus, Parvovirus, Parainfluenza and Leptospirosis every year

Rabbits• Worming treatment given every 3 months• Vaccine booster against Viral Haemorrhagic Disease every 6 months• Vaccine booster against Myxomatosis every year

Preventative care schemes vary in what they offer and what they cost, they will also usually be reflective of not just species but of the size of the breed. Some also have added benefits such as discounts off non-preventative treatments and products, like a loyalty bonus for signing up to monthly payments, which can be of great benefit if your pet has an ongoing condition.

So why not see what your local practice is doing and make vets bills that little bit less

scary.

For fans, you’ll certainly enjoy the film, with a well rounded cast from throughout the entire series coming together to pull off the impossible. It’s surprising to see that the fifth film in the series is the best, but I suppose

that it’s merely the evolution of F&F. Suffice to say, action fans with enough suspension of disbelief will

enjoy this immensely.

Former cop Brian O’Conner partners with ex-con Dom Toretto on the opposite side of the law. Since Brian and Mia Toretto broke Dom out of custody, they’ve blown across many borders to elude authorities. Now backed into a corner in Rio de Janeiro, they must pull one last job in order to gain their freedom. As they assemble their elite team of top racers, the unlikely allies know their only shot of getting out for good means confronting the corrupt businessman who wants them dead. But he’s not the only one on their tail. Hard-nosed federal agent Luke Hobbs never misses his target. When he is assigned to track down Dom and Brian, he and his strike team launch an all-out assault to capture them. But as his men tear through Brazil, Hobbs learns he can’t separate the good guys from the bad. Now, he must rely on his instincts to corner his prey... before someone else runs them down first.
