’m sure by now you’ll have noticed the magazine has had a bit of a re-design this month, I hope you like the new look as much as we do.

You may have also noticed that the magazine has increased in size – page wise – as we’ve added some new contributors, including a short story written by a student from the Neale-Wade Academy, and they’ll be more involved in the next issue. That’s all I can say at the moment.

Christmas is getting ever closer, so if you have any festive related news or events you want mentioned in the magazine don’t hesitate to get in touch, we’ll try to include as many as possible.

But enough about then, let’s focus on what’s in the magazine this month. There’s only one place to start, the Christmas Novelty Hunt. By matching the correct festive novelties to the ones placed in selected shops around town you could win the £150 cash prize. Full details inside.

March Soccer School is the latest local club to be lit up by our club spotlight. You can find out the itinerary of the upcoming Remembrance Day Parade, as well as the details of the Christmas Lights Switch on.

You can also hear from our regular contributors and be able to look through the interesting array of events happening in and around March during November.

| A word from - your Mayor Kit Owen Autumn has definitely taken over from the glorious summer weather we enjoyed for quite a long period. The prospect of Halloween and Guy Fawkes celebrations on the horizon gives a clear indicator of how close we are to the end of the year. Over the past month I was invited to RAF Waterbeach, where I was privileged to observe the skills and enthusiasm of Cambridgeshire Army Cadets, which included several from March. The cadets also form the Corps of Drums which performed a “Sunset” Ceremony at the end of the day. Having seen firsthand the enthusiasm of the instructors for many of our local youth groups, Army, Air Force, Scouting and numerous others I am always pleased to see a successful outcome. Along with the Deputy Mayor, I was both delighted and privileged to hand out some 288 well deserved medals and certificates at March Library. This recognised the superb efforts of young children from March Schools, who were encouraged to read six books over the Summer Holidays. One suspects there are not many adults achieving the completion of six books in six weeks. An extremely unusual invitation came from Skull Splitters Motor Cycle Club. As one of the judges I was privileged to select the winning motorcycle in various categories. As it has been a considerable number of years since I had a motorcycle, my judging was definitely more visual than technical. As the Club meets on a regular basis at a local hostelry, with several

March members, it was obviously quite popular. YOPEY or Young People of the Year, held an awards ceremony at Ely Cathedral. This was to recognise those young people from Cambridgeshire who have displayed extraordinary enterprise and leadership. Shannon Barrow was the March nominee. I was invited along with the three other Town Mayors of Chatteris, Whittlesey and Wisbech, to the Fenland Enterprise Business Awards. This displayed the incredible achievements and endeavours of many SME’s (Small and Medium Enterprises) of March and throughout Fenland. A double winner and much deserved, collecting both Small Business of the Year and Customer Service Award, was A.D Sutton Motor Engineers Ltd. of March. It was so encouraging to see so many local businesses had fought their way through the recession. It has been a terrific time recently for many different reasons. The enterprise, courage and endeavour of March youth, as well as others, in so many different ways have been a privilege to witness.

March Town United is pressing ahead with exciting plans for a new clubhouse, new changing rooms and a bar at The GER Club after a successful bid for £100,000 funding from the Football Foundation.

The Hares are now awaiting the outcome of other grant applications to raise the £200,000 total needed – but are confident work will start on the project early next year.

The new clubhouse and changing facilities have the potential to significantly improve the experience of players and spectators, and also to strengthen the case for bidding for pitch improvements which could maximise the revenue potential of the new clubhouse.

A standard grass football pitch can only be used competitively for four hours a week before the quality of the surface deteriorates noticeably. By contrast lots of matches can be played on artificial pitches all year round, and now they have been approved for FA Cup matches and league fixtures it makes commercial sense to use them.

I am continuing with my “Treat me local” health campaign, so far over 1,000 people have signed up in support through my petition and I am planning to bring it before parliament shortly. It is well documented that this area is like the “Cinderella” of the

county when it comes to service provision of all kinds. Health and being able to access good services locally is vital and I hope we can redress some of the historical imbalances in provision through this campaign.I continue to work on a number of cases raised by constituents following the summer floods. These include problems with insurance companies, and questions raised over the area’s drainage system. I have been in contact with Anglian Water to discuss these issues, including a broken sewer pipe which residents in Lime Grove blame for the flooding they suffered in their homes.

Recently I was interviewed by Neale-Wade student Chloe Spencer who writes a blog for The Guardian newspaper and has just been appointed editor of a new school newspaper as part of her career aspiration to be a journalist. It is clear from Chloe’s successful blogs for the Guardian and her professional interview style that she can go on to achieve great success. I look forward to reading her articles in the future.

SPARKLE this Winter

Stardust Clothing are fashion advocates, and have been trading in March for twelve years. They stock a variety of men’s and women’s clothing, and accessories, in sizes 8 to 18. Stardust Clothing trade with the community in mind, and price their branded items at the recommended retail cost; therefore you’re guaranteed to find a good deal. Stardust Clothing has a range of stock, perfect for women and men, aged 20–50. There’s certainly something for everyone, and all occasions. If you’re looking for a perfect Christmas party dress, you will love Amy Childs’ irresistible glamorous evening dresses, which are designed to a Bodycon style, giving the illusion of the popular hour glass figure. They are definitely on my Christmas wish list. Team an Amy Childs’ dress with heels and a clutch bag. For men looking to dress to impress this Christmas, you will love the range of ‘Guide London’ shirts, wear them for Christmas meals, or as you celebrate New Years Eve, for a fashionable start to the new year. Team the shirt with a pair of brown boots and black slim-fit jeans, to achieve a smart/casual look. Not only does Stardust Clothing stock glamorous evening clothes; it also stocks clothing that will

allow you to keep cosy and comfortable. Beat the cold this winter in a Bench zip up jacket, and team with Etnies trainers, for a casual look. For women who love Urban Outfitters, let me introduce you to Ichi; their winter range consists of stylish urban designs, perfect for a daytime look; this includes jumpers, tops and skirts. Stardust Clothing also stocks a wide selection of handbags, and jewellery, which compliments any outfit. The gorgeous range of Silvian Heach bags consists of beautifully designed, and embellished, tote and clutch bags, for daytime and the evening. Most of the range includes an embellished ‘Silvian Heach’ logo in gold, which is right on trend and adds value, thanks to Michael Kors. Startdust Clothing’s friendly staff will advise you on sizes, styles, and designs. By only stocking a limited selection of sizes, you’re guaranteed exclusivity, so what are you waiting for? You’ll be impressed with what you can buy within a few steps from home.

Stardust can be found at 64 High Street, March. Call 01354 652412.

| Royal Naval Association March By David Lazarus

t was quite a surprise when I heard that one of the tombola tickets I had bought earlier in the day was a winner. The occasion was the Branch Chairman’s Garden Party in September. I was there with my wife and about 30 other Branch members to enjoy the food, the sunshine, good conversation and what seemed to be a lot of pusser’s rum. Generally, I am not lucky when it comes to lottery tickets and wandered up to collect my prize half expecting it to be a mistake but, instead, was pleased to be presented with a hard cover book about the life of Lord Louis Mountbatten. I sat back down with it and while showing my wife heard our Vice Chairman, William Evans, who happened to be sitting on the other side of me, declare that he had written a little something on the flyleaf before donating that book to the Garden Party as a prize.

Intrigued, I pressed him for more information and learned that he had been Head of Mountbatten’s naval retinue in the 1960s and had authored a book of his experiences called ‘My Mountbatten Years’ first published in 1989. William joined the Royal Navy in 1950 and nine years later, having achieved the rank of Petty Officer, was appointed to the Royal Yacht Britannia. After only one cruise with the Royals on board he was ‘poached’ by Lord Mountbatten and then began ten demanding but exciting years in his service.

William told me how he had travelled the world with ‘Lord Louis’, meeting an extraordinary spectrum of people ranging from the Bush tribes of New Guinea to celebrities such as Charlie Chaplin and Noel Coward. He met world leaders, attended grand state occasions and conversed with our Royals including Prince Charles and Princess Anne.

I found our discourse to be so interesting that I bought a copy of William’s book from Amazon on returning home that afternoon. It is a good read and while detailing the author’s many adventures, it also offers an insight into Mountbatten the man, delivering a fine account of the relationship that built up over the years between two people from quite different backgrounds.

There is also a no holds barred description of the price paid by William for the stressful lifestyle he experienced while in that position. The pace was such that it took a toll on his health and after ten years of frenetic activity he finally had to submit his resignation and leave to rest and recuperate. It was a life he left reluctantly and still looks back on with considerable fondness. The book begins and ends with reference to his devastation on hearing of Mountbatten’s violent death in August 1979.

Keep a look out for ‘My Mountbatten Years’ by William Evans. Like William himself it is bright and lively and makes for a fascinating read.

In the lead up to the New Year, March Chamber of Commerce is again focusing on recruiting new members. The town and district are full of small and medium-sized businesses and we know that, by working together, we can really have a voice in what happens in our area. We offer the chance to get together and network with principals in other local businesses, which allows us to cross-refer customers; make personal recommendations in where to find particular services; seek support and advice when necessary; use our combined “pulling power” to attract a wide cross-section of speakers and workshop leaders; enjoy social events; have a voice in local Government decisions….in short, all the things business people say they would like to access. Membership is just £10 per year, with nothing to pay until January 2015. Application forms are being distributed across many town-centre businesses and are also available by contacting any Committee member or downloading one from our website www.marchchamber.org.uk The last open meeting of the year will be on Monday 10th November in the Oliver Cromwell Hotel, March, at 6.30pm. There will be no meeting in December. Please complete your application form today!Debbie Buck – Chair, March Chamber

WATCH OUT FOR SCAMS

Lincolnshire Police have recently warned about two of the most common, currently reported scams, which are:1. Postal / Telephone ScamsLottery and prize draw scams are where victims are told they have won a large cash prize but are asked to send a fee to release it.THIS IS A SCAM - No genuine lottery or competition would ask you to send money to claim a prize.

2. Courier ScamsScammers call the victim claiming to be from their bank or the police, to tell them their debit or credit card needs collecting. The scammer then instructs the victim to hang up and call their bank or the police in order to verify this is a genuine request. However, the criminal stays on the line tricking the person into thinking they’re calling the bank/police. The fraudster will then ask the victim to disclose their PIN number before sending a courier to collect the card. The victim is told the card is going to the bank to be changed, but actually the scammer keeps it and uses it to buy goods or take money from the victim’s account. THIS IS A SCAM - If you receive a similar call, end the conversation, SAY NO, put the telephone receiver down. Then leave it down for at least five minutes to disconnect the call completely.

If you answer a call on your mobile telephone, SAY NO, end the call; do not connect again for at least five minutes. If you receive a similar telephone call please report details to Lincolnshire Police, Tel 101 (non emergency) or 999 in an emergency. STAY SCAM SAFE

Cambridgeshire Folk Tales LaunchedLocal writer, historian and storyteller Maureen James recently – October 15th – launched her new book Cambridgeshire Folk Tales at March Library. The launch was followed by a storytelling event, with three more scheduled across the county in November. The new book is Maureen’s second in the Folk Tales series having written the Lincolnshire version last year. Produced by The History Press the Folk Tale series is a collection of traditional local tales, retold by local storytellers and illustrated with bespoke drawings covering all the counties and regions of the UK and Ireland. 60 books have been published so far. Cambridgeshire Folk Tales contains 30 key stories, some with variants, and mentions 63 places across the county. Maureen described herself as being “pleased” with the book when she saw it for the first time and the explained how she chose the stories inside, she said: “I tried to do a spread across the county and also of types of tales as well so they are in categories. “It was just a matter of choosing all the stories I knew, which ones fitted a geographic spread plus interest and styles of story for different occasions. There’s gruesome tales, funny tales, serious ones, historical ones and so on.” In the book you can explore the antics of the inhabitants of the past including Hereward the Saxon hero; the Fenland giant Tom Hickathrift; the pious Bricstan of Chatteris; the raconteur and skater Chaffe Legge; and Mr Leech, who was carried off by the Devil. You will also discover hidden history, including how the secret Brotherhood of the Grey Goose Feather helped King Charles I, and what really happened to King John’s treasure. You’ll be able to hear some of these stories first hand as the dates for the storytelling events in November are as follows: Thursday 6th at Whittlesey Library 2-4pm, Tuesday 18th at Wisbech Library 7-9pm and Wednesday 26th at Cambridge Central Library 2-4pm. Cambridgeshire Folk Tales is available on Amazon for £9.99. For more info about Maureen visit: www.tellinghistory.co.uk. To find out more about the Folk Tale series visit: www.thehistorypress.co.uk.

Remembrance Day ParadeThis year’s Remembrance Day Parade will be held on Sunday November 9th. The parade starts at 10.30am at Sainsbury’s and is followed by a service to be held at St Peter’s Church at 11am. Following the service the congregation will leave the church and make its way to the War Memorial for a wreath laying and a two minute silence to be held at midday. All ex-service personnel are encouraged to join the parade. For more information contact parade marshall Major Nigel Spencer: [email protected].

Christmas Lights Switch onMake sure you’re home good and early on Friday 28th November as the roads near the market place will be closed at 5pm in preparation for the Christmas Lights Switch on. From 6pm you’ll be able to enjoy the fair rides in Broad Street and at 6.55pm a very special visitor – Father Christmas no less – arrives at the market place. The actual switch on will take place at 7pm and at 7.15pm Father Christmas departs and heads back to his workshop at the North Pole. On the evening also make sure you look out for the members of the Middle Level Watermen’s Club (MLWC) who will be adding further colour to the evening. MLWC will moor their boats up at the town moorings dressed in illuminations. Additionally the club will be running a tombola stool on the town bridge. For more information about the light switch on contact March Town Council Clerk Clive Lemmon on 01354 653 709 or email: [email protected]

Outer Rim Toys celebrates

Offering a range of quality branded toys including action figures, soft toys, die-cast models, wooden toys along with scooters and skateboards; Outer Rim Toys & Models is celebrating one year in March.Owner, Phil Rolfe described the first year as “encouraging” and has been pleased with the feedback he has received, he said: “I’d like to thank those who have supported me during the first year; hopefully it’s the first of many. “I’ve had lots of positive feedback from local customers and had some nice comments about how nice the shop looks.” Phil then explained more about the range of toys on offer at Outer Rim, he said: “I do a lot of the Bigjigs wooden toys; they cover quite a range in the shop because they do such a vast amount, from baby toys all the way up through the ages. “There are scooters and skateboards, you can get small micro-scooters for 2-5 year olds and go onto the bigger Slamm brand which covers everything from five and up. “I do Thomas the Tank Engine toys, both wooden and die-cast. The Orchard Toys are

a good range of learning puzzles and games for ages three and up, and one of the best soft toys I do is the Ty Beanies range; they do some licensed toys like My Little Pony and Peppa Pig.” While the Outer Rim shop is 12 months old Phil has been in the toy and model business for 13 years, he started out trading mostly Star Wars toys on the collectables market. Those toys where the inspiration for the name of the shop as Outer Rim was the least widely settled and explored expanse of the Star Wars galaxy. While Phil admitted the shop was “a long time coming” from the outset it was a goal of his, he said: “My own shop was always the ambition.”

Outer Rim Toys & Models is situated at 8A Station Road, March, PE15 8LB. For more information call 01354 656 544 or visit: www.facebook.com/outerrimtoys.

By Jade Milnthorpe Overpowering, the stench of rotten food and murky water lingers in the creek around five metres from where our tent is pitched. My nostrils are embedded with thick Cralidine that has brandished the sky, clean by appearance but poison nevertheless as it teases my windpipe before I abruptly cough it out. I

stare above me, but there is no ceiling. Just an unwelcoming sky which looks prehistoric on a washed-out canvas. Only too frequently do I notice that washed-out look, on the faces of my children and the families, unfortunate enough to surround us, who are all vulnerable and tortured in the era we are so shamefully a part of. I remember each protruding little detail so fiercely that sometimes I wake up screaming in the depths of despair, that I am still a part of it all. In a way I am. In a way I always will be. I resemble a bird,

although I no longer have the freedom to fly.I’m running towards her; the transparencies of her tears, noticeably streaming down her face and her

hazel eyes are glazed with a fragile glass-like coating. Crying silent tears, she knows better than to draw attention to herself. Each cut into her flesh is another silent tear which represents a whole life of pain and insignificant agony that will be as remembered as the imprint she left in the dirt we once existed on. The

blade is sharp and carries deep rust like a thick winter coat, encased and protected. We had once had such luxuries as a winter coat. As a young child, my head was filled with hopes, dreams and so many aspirations.

I was naive and unprepared. Maybe if I had considered my actions I wouldn’t have hurt as many as I did. The punishments had become more frequent, purposely; followed by warnings, threats, and intimidation. At first they didn’t touch her. They didn’t dare, and they knew that the value I placed on her life exceeded

my own. I was numb; long ago I had stopped feeling or maybe just not recognised the physical torture. I was haunted by the mental images. The scars were beyond my skin and they were as recognisable as the blood that ran deep through my body and just as necessary. For it was what I had witnessed that made me fight

so hard to keep her alive. My first punishment was the worst. I was scalded in order for them to leave their branded mark on me. It signified their control and my reluctance to accept it. The pain ripped through me

and every part of my body shuddered. The bitter taste of sweat dripped onto my lips and it was my only relief as I choked on the tiny droplets that fell at the back of my throat. I felt a lighter anguish.

I struggled to walk, still weeks after. My blood-soaked sock carried a repulsive, nauseating stench as dirt collected in the wound and the scabs continued to cover and heal despite obvious infections which I had no medicine to treat. Medicine was not so much a luxury as it was a desire. To self-medicate was frowned upon but sometimes it was our only escape: the only isolation we were able to achieve having such little control. I was mesmerised constantly by my body’s ability to withstand pain and refrain from giving in as so many times my head had wanted to. These were the wounds that marked my existence, the wounds that would

remind me every day that I had fought a battle I was so clearly going to lose. The camp had been set up at first for salvation, somewhere that we were able to stay while everything died

down. The night we fled it, is still so distinct and clear it my mind. My first intuition came from the high-pitched sirens which inhabited the area, the air filled with hostile echoing screams. We were sat on our sofa, surrounded by the rich smells of brewed tea and vanilla scented candles. Our legs were tangled within each

other’s as we spent a welcomed evening relaxing after a week which had felt so achingly long. I held her in my arms and rested my face against her head, breathing in the sweet fragrance of her long brown hair as we reminisced in each other’s company. Abruptly the ambience of our own home was shattered; a brick

rapidly flew through our window, bluntly colliding with her head. Seconds it took, to drain and seize her body. To remove every inch of the women I knew and leave her drowning in my arms as a lifeless corpse. No

words, no regrets, no hopes, no future, no nothing. What happened after is a blur to me. My strength must have been retained for me to have been able to get my children. They slept in the top right hand bedroom in bunk beds with pink painted walls which I had

always despised, although my beloved had insisted that it would grow on me. Snapshots initially whirring through my head captured them as being as small and as fragile as the day I held each one of them in my arms. They were my most cherished and unforgettable moments when I first locked my eyes on theirs. It

was ironic that despite every baby being born with that similar greyish shade of blue, I was certain that by my own opinion and rights, these were the most beautiful and treasured eyes I would ever watch change

and without doubt, until the end, I would still feel the same about them. Each time my eyes now gazed upon them I was reminded that they were the descendants of me and her. So how did we end up here?

Each month Discovering March will be showcasing stories written by talented young students from Neale-Wade Academy.

Youth

Shannon - looking out for the youth and events right here in March

So much is available for young people, check out www.cambridgeshire.net or see what 20Twenty Productions.co.uk are up to.

Hey y’all happy November! I’m already feeling the excitement from the fireworks we’ll all be looking forward to this month. And let’s not even mention the ‘C’ word that’s soon approaching. Better get those all-important letters for Santa written.

Calling all Neale-Wade students! Have you seen the posters around school for the Talent Show? Why not enter yourself? You can pick up the forms from student reception. Also I’m very pleased to say that the yearly Neale-Wade play of Lark Rise to Candleford is midway through rehearsals and looking brilliant, more updates on this soon.

March has talent is soon approaching. We now have more acts but if you’re still interested send us an email – [email protected] – to book an audition at any time. Why wouldn’t you want to win £100 for expressing your talent, I know March is full of young talent.

You may have seen recently that I mentioned The Big Music Project, which is a national programme that offers opportunities to young people looking to enter the music industry. Our local music hub is March Town Hall, 20Twenty Productions. We recently had an amazing trip to London to one of the events that was run on behalf of The Big Music Project. We got the chance to see Eliza Doolittle, Becky Hill, Rhydian Roberts, Ezra Vine, Plan B, Chase & Status and more. Some of us were even lucky enough to chat with the stars and snap a selfie. It was a fantastic day that offered an insight into many career opportunities in showbiz. Find your local music hub and get involved.

A couple of weeks ago I had the honour of attending the YOPEY (Young People of the Year) awards. It was a brilliant evening and really celebrated the positivity of young people in Cambridgeshire. There were some amazing stories about community impact projects and it’s fantastic to see young people get some good press. It makes me proud that I was even nominated for an award so prestigious. The evening was held at Ely Cathedral and many local councillors, including March Mayor Kit Owen, attended with pride in young people. You could be a YOPEY nominee next year, so why not see what you can offer your community.

Young People March has recently been running free self-defence classes. What a great opportunity to get some skills that hopefully you’ll never have to use, but in an unfortunate case will be very handy. I found the first class very helpful. Further classes are on the 3rd and 10th November at Young People March Centre in City Road. Classes are 18:30-20:00.

There was quite a bit of hustle and bustle going on around Neale-Wade Sixth Form recently to get personal statements done and sent, to ensure placements at university. We had a visit from Anglia Ruskin to do some workshops on how to write them, but it’s a difficult process because in a sense you’re deciding your future within a few weeks. University is a three year commitment to an occupation that is possibly a career of a lifetime. My advice would be to choose something you can enjoy, I was told that if you ‘Choose a job you love, you’ll never have to work a day in your life’. There are so many different opportunities that allow you to be just about anything you want, so grasp those dreams and set yourself up for a life to be proud off.

Could Sports and Remedial massage help you?Do you suffer from tired, overused, aching muscles? Do you spend long periods of time sitting at a desk or in the car?

Sports and Remedial massage can work well to relax, soften and stretch overused muscles from work, stress and sport. The benefit to muscles means that it can also help to increase joint flexibility and range of movement. Many people find massage therapy helps to reduce depression and anxiety; it can work very well to help relax you and help you to manage stress. Regular treatment can be beneficial for sports people to help their body recover from the pressures of sporting activities, it can help reduce recovery times between training sessions, reduce scar tissue from injury and help to reduce the risk of further injury.

We have daytime, evening and some weekend appointments available at 47-49 High Street, March. Call us on 01354 651200 or visit www.marchpodiatry.co.uk for more information.

Canine Body Language

There are lots of other forms of body language that your pet will display depending on its mood, so here are a few examples for you to look for so you can better communicate with your dog:

I’m a curious dog:• Head tilted • Sniffing the ground, objects, people or other pets

I’m a stressed dog: • Yawning when not tired• Narrowing of the eyes • Tucking in of the tail • Licking the lips or nose when there is no food around• Lowering or curving the body• Digging

I want to be left alone: • Panting (when not hot or thirsty)

• Avoiding eye contact• Tense forehead and ears

I’m a happy or excited dog: • Wagging tail• Eye contact • Pricked up ears• Stretching• Play bow• Licking• Wiggling• Pawing at people

I’m a relaxed dog:• Stretching • Laying on back with belly exposed• Relaxed ears and blinking eyes• Yawning

I’m a scared dog: • Hiding under chairs,

tables and in beds or behind sofas• Freezing/going ridged • Shaking• Ears pinned back

I’m a bored dog:• Paw chewing • Chewing/sucking the floor/skirting board• Destruction of property

I’m in pain:• Limping • Repeated head shaking• Hunched abdomen• Excessive grooming

Pain can sometimes trigger aggression, so if your dog starts to display signs of aggression in a short space of time, they may be trying to tell you that something is wrong.

Your dog may not be able to talk to you, however they do communicate through their body language. Probably the most recognisable sign of this to most of us is a dog wagging its tail, which means a happy dog.

Inheritance updateLast month I told you making a Will won’t kill you. From October 1st this year the intestacy rules – dying without making a Will – have changed. A new Act came into force known as The Inheritance and Trustees Powers Act 2014 or ITPA 2014 which is less difficult.

If you pass away leaving a spouse/civil partner, parents and/or siblings but no children, your spouse or civil partner will inherit all of your estate. Your parents and/or siblings will now not receive anything.

In the event that you die and leave a spouse/civil partner and children, your spouse/civil partner will receive the first £250,000, your personal items – often referred to as chattels – and half of the remaining estate. Your

children will inherit the other half of the remaining estate when they reach 18 years of age.

However, if you have a partner, but are not married, your partner will not inherit anything.

If you wish to discuss your options when making a will, please get in touch.

Auto Enrolment Pensions

By now you will have seen adverts featuring prominent personalities indicating that a new pension initiative is beginning to take effect. If you employ anyone – you need to have a compliant scheme with the correct enrolment procedure in place by the time the Pensions Regulator expects you to be ready. If you do not know you’re staging date or whether you have all the correct procedures in place – your first port of call might be the website: http://www.thepen-sionsregulator.gov.uk/ As an employee you should know that a scheme must be provided for you and that you will be automatically enrolled into it. You do have the option to opt out – but why would you when in effect you’ll be giving up a wage increase? When the entire plan is fully operational 8% of your qualifying earnings will be paid in to a pen-sion scheme. Your employer will contribute 3%, you will contribute 4% and the tax man adds a further 1% – therefore in return for your 4% you get double the amount invested for the future – unless your circumstances are such that any reduction of income would cause hardship – this is too good to miss. Many employers will operate the scheme set up by the government: National Employment Savings Trust (N.E.S.T.) because it is simple and

complies with legislation, other employers that are looking to attract and retain staff may seek out a more comprehensive arrangement. Many Independent Financial Advisers help employers by setting up schemes that are both compliant and offer additional benefits – if this is of inter-est please contact me for further information. If you are an employee wondering how this new arrangement will fit in with any existing arrange-ments, I will be pleased to advise you. An initial consultation can be arranged at no cost to you. It is important for employers to note that the Pensions Regulator has wide reaching powers. You need to assess your workforce so that you know who needs to be automatically enrolled and why. You also need a robust payroll sys-tem plus evidence of your communications and contribution calculations. Failure to comply varies from a warning letter to fixed penalty notices of £400 and escalating penalty notices £50-£10,000 daily* My message is on two levels, as an employer be prepared, as an employee be aware and if you are struggling to make sense of it – ask a qualified specialist.

*The pensions Regulator DM 2777032 v4: The value of an investment can go down as well as up and you may not get back as much as you put in.

| Motoring news “TWIGGIES TIPS”Hello there, my name is Mark Twigg from MT Cars and MTC Subaru in Whittlesey. We thought it would be a nice idea to help you with purchasing a new/used car, maintaining your car or even simply staying safe in your current car. On the odd occasion we’ll also be reporting the latest news relating to cars.

Antifreeze is something that is often forgotten or is not given the credit it deserves. A con-tinuous squealing noise as soon as the engine is started is usually a sign the water pump is frozen (it’s the fan belt slipping on the pulley) the cylinder block could be frozen too. You need to turn the engine off and allow the engine to thaw out. If the vehicle overheats it’s a possible sign that the radiator could be frozen preventing the cool-ant from circulating, again stop straight away in order to prevent any serious damage. Generally antifreeze only costs a few pounds, however if you haven’t had you car serviced or you forget to add it, it could cost you hundreds of pounds in repairs. You need a 50/50 mix of water and antifreeze in the cooling system for winter, this should give you protection down as far as -30. Tyres, we recommend that you have your tyres checked and really they ought to be at least 3mm and certainly no less than 2mm, so again why not make an appointment with our service depart-ment for us to check your vehicle thoroughly? We will go over your whole vehicle for you and report back with our findings.

Let’s make sure we all stay safe this winter!

We hope you found the last edition helpful, this time round we thought we would help you with the up and coming winter months and how to look after yourself and your vehicle. We recommend you gather a few items at the start of the winter season and keep them in your car – just in case. Below are items that should be in your emergency kit:gIce scraper and de-icergTorch and spare batteries – or a wind-up torchgWarm clothes and blankets – for you and all passengersgBootsgFirst aid kitgJump start cablesgFood and a warm drink in a flaskgShovelgReflective warning signgRoad atlasgSunglasses – the glare from the snow can be dazzlinggMobile phone charger

Most of these items we can arrange for you and help you put together a winter kit; it is also worth, before setting off on your journey, planning and checking it so as to avoid any problems.

Buying or selling a property

W When buying or selling a property most people are taking a step into the unknown. Property transactions are not something that people do on a regular basis and therefore have to trust in various people in order to achieve their dream of owning a property. At Fraser Dawbarns solicitors we have dedicated and trained staff with a combined 150 years of legal experience. They have assisted thousands of clients to navigate the maze of conveyancing and ensure they achieve their goal.

We pride ourselves on our local knowledge and expertise. We are now in our third year of being accredited by the Law Society under the Conveyancing Quality Scheme. The scheme has only 3000 accredited firms across England and Wales. This enables us to act for all mortgage providers and ensure our clients do not have the inconvenience of having to have one solicitor acting for them and another acting for the mortgage company, a situation which can lead to additional cost and time delays. The scheme ensures we work to a given compliance protocol which means we constantly have to monitor our client feedback to ensure our standards are being maintained. Our clients are our most valued asset and their feedback is key to improving our services.

Our staff has the necessary local knowledge to understand what developments are occurring in our towns and villages across north Cambridgeshire and western Norfolk. This enables us to give our clients a firsthand opinion on the issues which may affect a particular village. This may be low flying aircraft or a road which is the main route to a factory besieged by heavy goods vehicles. This information cannot

| Legal corner Iain Grimes, Member (Conveyancing)

be provided by the conveyancing factories in Manchester, Cardiff or London. They are relying entirely on database searches which will tell you the whole of our region will flood at any given moment. This is of course nonsense.

We always:

• Offer a fixed price conveyancing service with no hidden extras. At the outset we will provide you with a written quotation setting out the costs we charge and also the costs we will incur on your behalf when carrying out the searches with local authorities, water companies and environmental risk assessors.

• Provide you with direct email and phone contact with the person dealing with your transaction.

• Encourage a one to one meeting with you at our office to explain the contract and title deeds. Legal jargon is not always easy to understand a face to face meeting can go a long way to explaining exactly what you are taking on. Large conveyancing firms or the online conveyancing solutions cannot offer the same level of personal service as your local firm. Nor can they offer local knowledge which has been built successfully over the last 150 years as ours has. The online firm or the conveyancing factory will tell you otherwise of course . . . so go ahead ring their call centre . . . if you’re not frustrated by countless options fed to you by an automated system. Then give your local solicitor a call.

Get Ready for Winter FishingAfter a long warm summer, I’m afraid to say winter is on its way. There have already been a couple of frosts, the lakes are getting colder and the weights are dropping. But even through the winter you can still have a good days sport. As the weather gets colder the fish tend to shoal up, so if you can locate these shoals you’re in for a good day. The best tip is to fine your tackle down using smaller hooks and baits such as maggot, worm or small soft pellet. The best match weights are still respectable and at most venues you still need 100lb plus to win, however, as it becomes colder fishing gets harder. 13-year-old Ben Darrington is still fishing well and over at Gedney Hill Lakes he took top spot in the Leverington Angling Club match, breaking his own personal best result to date with a whopping 152lb catch of Carp to 8lb. On the rivers it’s time to get your bread out, the Old Nene at March and Benwick responds well to this. I personally think the best bread to use is liquidised for a five hour session. I would use about two loafs; any you don’t use you can freeze. When feeding with this squeeze some bread into a ball, about as big as a golf ball, and feed as regular hook bait. I take about five slices of fresh bread and punch it out on the bank as I need it. There are several types of bread punches on the market, but I prefer the Drennan make which comes in five different sizes. Hemp also works well in winter and picks out the bigger fish, but mostly only Roach whereas bread will tempt most species. Worm works ok too, although this is mostly useful if you want to catch Perch or Tench, which as the weather gets really cold, the Tench don’t normally feed but the Perch will.

In a recent match on the Old Nene I fished worm and caught a couple of Tench, plenty of Perch and a few nice Rudd to 1lb for a winning weight of 17lb. This month there are a couple of matches on the Old Nene through March, these are on Sunday 9th & 16th and run by the March and District Angling Association. Another is on Wednesday 5th; this is a service match run by the police and will use most of the river. If you want to see how to fish the Old Nene a walk along the bank on these dates is well worth considering. Also this time of year, the Pike are fishing a lot better. On November 22nd the British Pike Championships take place on the drains around Whittlesey.

STEAMED UP DOUBLE GLAZING?Don’t replace the Frames... just the Panes!

Cloudy2Clear Windows – Service With A Smile! It’s been a crazy few months for Cloudy2Clear Windows. The company which specialises in repairing windows which are steamed up, broken or damaged by replacing the panes – not the frames has grown rapidly as homeowners take advantage of their services. Managing Director Mark Sherwood feels that it’s all about service. ‘Our product is simple. If your double glazing is misted up we can replace the glass at a fraction of the cost of a new window, in any type of frame, and with a new 5 year guarantee. But it’s not just about saving people money, although that obviously helps. Many tradespeople have

struggled since last year and I honestly feel that during the good times a minority perhaps didn’t focus on customer care as much as they should have done. We make sure we turn up when we say we will, do the job the customer requires and leave their house as clean as a whistle. I often get comments back from customers on how they really didn’t expect that sort of service which, in a way, is very sad for the service industry as a whole.’ Cloudy2Clear service Whittlesey, Eastrea & Coates areas and Mark is finding that his approach is a major factor in his success. ‘The truth is that it’s not just the personal

satisfaction that I get from doing a good job but also it makes good business sense. I get a huge amount of business from friends and family of people I’ve done work for, which just goes to show how much

a little bit of effort is appreciated.’ So, if your windows are steamed up, broken or damaged give Mark a call for a free quotation on 0800 61 21 118 and he’ll be happy to help!

March Soccer School | Spotlight on clubs by Andrew Smith

Founder, Head Coach and Chairman Tony Russell has been coaching for 28 years and it was the lack of youth football in March that made him start his own team, he said: “I had a lad and he was about six and he loved the game so I took him to Doddington and he had to train in an under 10 team, as a six-year-old. “So he stayed there until he was nine and I thought well he needs to start playing so I said to him I’ll start a team in March. So we pulled a few boys from Westwood School and then off we went that was the first March team.” Tony is one of 19 qualified coaches at the Soccer School and holds a UEFA B License, but while he runs the training sessions, Club Secretary Katie Conyard does a lot of the work behind the scenes. She is one of 25 CRB checked volunteers who fill various roles at the Soccer School and spoke of the challenge of organising the activities of 15 teams, saying: “It’s very busy and hectic but also rewarding, especially when you see the kids playing at the weekend all with a smile on their face, which is what it’s all about as long as their happy and developing.” Her efforts were recognised recently (September 16th) when she was voted Volunteer of the Year at the 2014 FA Community Awards. Looking to the future both Tony and Katie made it clear facilities, or the lack of, remains the biggest stumbling block. At present the

Soccer School uses three separate school pitches at weekends – Westwood, All Saints and Maple Grove – as well as using the artificial turf pitch at Neale-Wade during the winter. “The biggest problem we’ve got is the facilities,” said Tony. Adding: “Hopefully that doesn’t stall things really; you don’t want to turn round to the children and say we’re not going to produce two under 17 teams this season because we can’t put you on any of the venues.” “It’s all down to the council’s really (Fenland and Cambs County),” said Katie. “Once you’ve got land you can get funding, our problem now is finding the adequate land”. Tony added: “We’ve got to get that bit of land. When you think of the amount of land all around March it’s unbelievable, but we can’t get the 10 acres that we need to support the club as it is now, probably in the next 5-10 years we might need 20 acres.”

March Soccer School train on Wednesday evenings 5.30-8.30pm at Westwood Junior School, if you want to join in any capacity or find out more visit: www.

marchsoccerschool.co.uk. Alternatively you can contact Tony Russell on 01354 651643, Katie Conyard on 07753 690393 or email: [email protected].

Since it was founded in 1992 March Soccer School has continued to grow and now boasts 15 teams; boys, girls and mixed – aged from

under 7s through to under 15s.

Volunteers visit people and provide free short-term practical and emotional support with things like shopping and collecting prescriptions or just calling in to check someone is ok. In winter we see a big increase in referrals to the service as people are more likely to suffer from chest infections and falls. “It’s a great volunteering opportunity and very rewarding to see people returning to independ-ence,” said Hilary Johnys, Direct Services Manager. “You can fit it around your other work or social commitments. You just let us know your availability and we work around it. Most visits continue for 2-3 weeks and we have volunteers who are retired, working, (full or part time) studying, are unemployed or at home with a family.” Volunteers are police checked, trained and paid any out of pocket expenses. With winter approaching we are seeing a real

increase in demand for the service and are looking for volunteers in the March and Whittlesea areas. Please contact us on 01354 694413 or email [email protected] for more information.Help at Home is funded by Cambridgeshire Clinical Commissioning Group and The Big Lottery Reaching Communities in Hunts and Fens.

Make a difference with just a few hours a month!

Help at Home volunteers provide free short term practical and emotional help after a hospital stay, or during an illness or crisis at home.

Music at Georges7th: Tallawah. Their name stands for “not to be underestimated, tough and stubborn” and they certainly live up to it. Emotion and rhythm are their trademarks, a band formed out of love for Reggae, but who still perform a few of their rock favourites in their own inimitable style. With four tight hardworking members you can count on them for a spectacular sound.

15th: “Let There Be DC”. One of the best and most authentic sounding AC/DC tribute bands in the whole of Britain, their performance is all about spirit, passion and having a tremendous time. They perform with the most energy possible to keep you rocking all night long.

21st: Whiskey Twist. A classic rock band formed from hugely respected musicians based right here in March. Nick Pooley, Martin Ringham, Pete Kolleng and Tom Harlock are all extremely professional and talented. March loves its classic rock and this locally formed band amplifies the passion of the town.

22nd: The Off-Beats. A SKA band conceived and formed at Georges. Without fail they always deliver their fantastically balanced vibe with plenty of passion whilst keeping the audience dancing and singing or should we say “Skanking “.

ovember a damp misty month in the Fens, when ‘The landscape sleeps in mist from morn till noon’. (1) In the 17th century there was constant concern about the rivers and drainage. November 17th 1670, Sir Algernon Peyton Bt, Lord of the Manor of Doddington, and trustees of March petitioned the Bedford Level Corporation for a sass (lock) at Bynnymore Hill to make the River Nene navigable again, which they would maintain if the Corporation made it. On November 9th 1693 there was a report by William Bourne as a result of a Corporation order and a petition by Edward Woodward Esq and other March inhabitants, for a tunnel made through Horscroft Bank and a drain through Eldernell Farm. (2) November 3rd was the festival day of St Wendreda, whose gild was established in her honour in the March church and held eight shillings and nine pence in 1393. (3) Medieval gilds looked after the social economic lives of its members. In November 1875 major restoration of St Wendreda’s church was advanced enough for it to be re-opened for a service by the Bishop of Ely, assisted by local clergy including Rev. J W Green Rector of March, Rev. G Walker Rector of Doddington, Rev. Ed Wells of St John’s, and Rev. R F Molesworth of St Mary’s. According to newspaper accounts, the pews and galleries had been swept away, the roofs thoroughly restored and walls repaired. New floors had been laid throughout and new doors in the entrances. The chancel was entirely new and a newly-carved oak pulpit was added. The East window was filled with glass by Messrs Clayton and Bell, placed there by the Rector in memory of his wife Mrs Green and her

sister. A very large congregation completely filled the church. Luncheon was an ‘elegant spread’ at the Griffin Hotel thanks to Mr Ambrose Grounds. Rev. Green said he hoped to have the Bishop’s presence again soon at the opening of the new Church of St Peter’s and that he would come when all the new churches were built to keep them in order. (4) November 1914, newspapers were full of news of local men fighting in the war. A family of Belgian refugees arrived in March from Antwerp: Josef and Maria Prins, their daughters Johanna and Elvira, and Mrs Prins’ sister Delphina Schullemans and husband Julien. Mr Prins was a foreman painter and they had hidden in their cellars from the German bombardment. Warned by British soldiers they must leave as the Germans were advancing, the family fled with other refugees to the station. Their train was the first to cross the Dutch border and they travelled to Amsterdam, where Mrs Prins spent some time in hospital. They sailed to London and were put on a train to March. The family were very appreciative and thanked everyone for gifts, furniture etc. for the house prepared for them, too numerous to thank individually. (5)
