On the last Sunday of each liturgical year, the Church celebrates the Solemnity of Christ the King.
Pope Pius XI instituted this feast in 1925 with his encyclical Quas Primas (“In the first”) to respond to growing nationalism and secularism. He recognized that these related societal ills would breed increasing hostility against the Church. His encyclical reminds the faithful that while governments and philosophies come and go, Christ reigns as king forever.
Solemnity of Christ the King
The Kingdom is Holistic Secularism divides our public selves from our private selves. When governments limit the rights of religious ministries, secularists claim that religious freedom is not harmed because we still have freedom of worship – we are free in private but not in public. But the kingdom of God calls us to a whole life of worship and service in the public square. We cannot worship on Sunday and then deny Christ’s teaching in the way we run our ministries throughout the week.
Nationalism, on the other hand, divides our loyalties. It is good to love one’s country, but ultimate loyalty is due only to Christ and his kingdom. Ideologies that ask us to put our nation above Christ and his Church are incompatible with service to the kingdom.
“The kingdoms of this world at times are sustained by arrogance, rivalries and oppression; the reign of Christ is a ‘kingdom of justice, love and peace.’ For a Christian, speaking of power and strength means referring to the power of the Cross, and the strength of Jesus’ love: a love which remains steadfast and complete, even when faced with rejection, and it is shown as the fulfillment of a life expended in the total surrender of oneself for the benefit of humanity.”
– Angelus Address of Pope FrancisSolemnity of Christ the King,
November 22, 2015
The Kingdom Demands Discipleship We must work every day, with the help of the Holy Spirit, to draw closer to Jesus. In our own increasingly “post-Christian” society, we cannot be complacent in our spiritual lives. To acknowledge the kingship of Christ means that we should dedicate ourselves to prayer, to building up our families and our parish communities, and to bringing healing to a broken world.
“The kingdom, already present and growing in our midst, engages us at every level of our being and reminds us of the principle of discernment which Pope Paul VI applied to true development: it must be directed to ‘all men and the whole man’.”
– Pope FrancisEvangelii Gaudium, 181
“Jesus is the center of creation; and so the attitude demanded of us as true believers is that of recognizing and accepting in our lives the centrality of Jesus Christ, in our thoughts, in our words and in our works.”
– Homily of Pope FrancisSolemnity of Christ the King
November 24, 2013
The Kingdom is Humble Jesus inaugurates a kingdom that grows through humble acts of service. Even as her freedom to carry out her ministries is threatened, the Church must patiently continue to serve the poor, educate the young, welcome the migrant, visit the prisoner, heal the sick, bury the dead, and love others.

Lectio Divina for the Solemnity of the Our Lord
Jesus Christ, King of the Universe
We begin our prayer:
In the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the
Holy Spirit. Amen.
Almighty ever-living God,
whose will is to restore all things
in your beloved Son, the King of the universe,
grant, we pray,
that the whole creation, set free from slavery,
may render your majesty service
and ceaselessly proclaim your praise.
Through our Lord Jesus Christ, your Son,
who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the
Holy Spirit,
God, for ever and ever.
(Collect, Solemnity of Our Lord Jesus Christ, King
of the Universe)
Reading (Lectio) Read the following Scripture two or three times.
John 18:33b-37
Pilate said to Jesus, "Are you the King of the
Jews?" Jesus answered, "Do you say this on your
own or have others told you about me?" Pilate
answered, "I am not a Jew, am I? Your own nation
and the chief priests handed you over to me. What
have you done?" Jesus answered, "My kingdom
does not belong to this world. If my kingdom did
belong to this world, my attendants would be
fighting to keep me from being handed over to the
Jews. But as it is, my kingdom is not here." So
Pilate said to him, "Then you are a king?" Jesus
answered, "You say I am a king. For this I was born
and for this I came into the world, to testify to the
truth. Everyone who belongs to the truth listens to
my voice."
Meditation (Meditatio) After the reading, take some time to reflect in
silence on one or more of the following questions:
• What word or words in this passage caught
your attention?
• What in this passage comforted you?
• What in this passage challenged you?
If practicing lectio divina as a family or in a group,
after the reflection time, invite the participants to
share their responses.
Prayer (Oratio) Read the Scripture passage one more time. Bring to
the Lord the praise, petition, or thanksgiving that
the Word inspires in you.
Contemplation (Contemplatio) Read the Scripture again, followed by this
reflection:
What conversion of mind, heart, and life is the Lord
asking of me?
Do you say this on your own or have others told you
about me? What do I say about Jesus? How do I
speak to others about my faith?
My kingdom does not belong to this world. Which
of my values reflect the values of the world? What
can I do to change them?
Everyone who belongs to the truth listens to my
voice. How do I hear God’s voice? How can I be
more receptive to God’s truth?
After a period of silent reflection and/or discussion,
all recite the Lord’s Prayer and the following:
Closing Prayer:
The LORD is king, in splendor robed;
robed is the LORD and girt about with strength.
And he has made the world firm,
not to be moved.
Your throne stands firm from of old;
from everlasting you are, O LORD.
Your decrees are worthy of trust indeed;
holiness befits your house,
O LORD, for length of days.
(From Psalm 93)

St. Joseph, Patron of the Poor Pray for us!
www.triumphofthecross.org You may have heard before that St. Joseph is the
patron saint of a happy death and wondered how we can ask him to pray for something that seems
contrary to our human nature. The term “happy death” might seem fitting at describing the relief
of a loved one who’s experienced much physical and
mental suffering, but the term “happy” here doesn’t mean the emotion of gladness. Instead, it’s meant more like the
concept of “true joy” that comes from an experience in which we know we’re with the right people in the right
place and on the right path. Thus, asking St. Joseph’s intercession for our happy death is praying that we
frequently remember our ultimate home and that – like
him – we are filled with the peace, faith and hope of Jesus and Mary at our final hour on this earth.
Please see next week’s bulletin for
Collection Totals for Nov 13th & 14th

It’s a life-changer - spend time with Him! You’ll be glad you did!
