Its getting closer by the day, and Im not talking about the ticklish thirty days ahead for us ladies, as some of our chaps let

loose that moustache once more during Movember. No, Im talking turkey, trees, tinsel and trimming-up, as the whole wonderful Christmas season gathers momentum once more. This months issue is filled with local restaurants and hostelries offering all manner of attractions for the festive weeks ahead, so remember to book early for your special events.

I had the good fortune recently to attend the Mayors Charity Dinner at the Corn Exchange and be part of what was a marvellous evening of entertainment, excellent food and an impressive boosting of Mayor Philip Knowless accumulated charity pot for his three very deserving causes.

I hope you all find this months issue entertaining and useful, as we start to think about the Christmas period, just around the corner. Thank you everyone for your continuing support and advice. Feedback does matter to us, we always listen and strive to make your favourite freebie even more of a must-have!

    Welcome to our November edition...

I was amused to see that Grantham, the town of my birth and one-time Britains most boring town,

is now being heralded as Britains Viagara capital, with more prescriptions for the drug being issued than for any other town. No doubt, the good folk of our South Kesteven neighbours would have beaten off stiff competition from many competitors for this accolade!

Amongst the customary wide-ranging assortment of our features and advice pages, this month the Montaz Indian restaurant in West Street is featured, as a well-

established part of our town. Hoping to become as well-established, no doubt, is Maxey Hair, a new hairdressing salon in Wherrys Lane.

On a sad note to finish, the town became much the poorer recently when we lost two very popular members of the same long-established Bourne family. Ashley Woolf, Manager of Smiths, lost his battle with cancer at the age of thirty, whilst his great-aunt Alice, known for years as Cissie Woolf who, with her brother Norman, ran Woolfs garage on North Street, died aged ninety-two. Both will be fondly remembered, by old and young alike.

    Enjoy the read!

Dreams can come true, as local lady, Sandra Upton, is showing with the recent opening of Maxey Hair, the third new unit to open on Wherrys Lane, just off Bournes bustling North Street. Her grandfather, the late Charles William Maxey from Corby Glen, told the teenaged Sandra that one day she would fulfil her dream of owning her own salon. At the time, Sandra was busy qualifying as a ladies hairdresser, but also about to enter the nursing profession. Several years were spent as an auxiliary nurse at Bourne Hospital, then ten years as a community auxiliary, before undertaking formal nurse training. Recently, Sandra has been Deputy Manager at a few local homes for the elderly.

All the time when she was pursuing this profession and bringing up her family, Sandra harboured the dream of one day being able to own her hairdressing salon, and now the opportunity has arrived. Fifteen years ago, Sandra began updating her hairdressing skills by taking her NVQs and, since then has been on many refresher courses, in readiness for the brave new world now awaiting her.

Maxey Hair is a bright, spacious and modern salon, with excellent lighting. Sandras son, local freelance photographer, Adrian Dewey, has been instrumental

in creating the punchy designs and images within the salon. The family connections also extend to granddaughter, fifteen year old Charlie, who has already contributed much and will be working part-time, once the salon becomes fully operational this month.

Sandra will be offering the chance for any hair stylists in the area who would like to rent

out a chair, be it on a short-term basis or as a more permanent arrangement. Anyone interested can get further information from Sandra at the salon.

Maxey Hair provide the full range of ladies hairdressing services at very reasonable prices. This includes a reduced rate for senior citizens. Access for disabled customers, including disabled toilet facilities, is

another example of Sandra being mindful of providing something for everyone. This looks like being a very welcome addition to this part of Bournes town centre re-development. Sandra Upton, nee Maxey (hence the salons name), is about to live her dream and we wish her every success.

Join thorpe hall hospices Lights of Love carol concertCarols, fireworks and mulled wine will all feature at Sue Ryder Thorpe Hall Hospices traditional Lights of Love concert this Christmas. But the centrepiece will, as usual, be the giant Christmas tree decked out with handwritten messages of love, remembrance and inspiration. For thousands of people across the area, Lights of Love has become a key event in the festive calendar, offering the chance to take time out of the hustle and bustle of Christmas preparation to remember loved ones. This years carol concert will take place on Sunday, December 13 in the gardens of Thorpe Hall, in Longthorpe, Peterborough, with the mansion house as the backdrop. Doors will open at 5pm with the carol singing beginning at 5.30pm. BBC Radio Cambridgeshire presenter Jane Smith will compere the event with the City

of Peterborough Concert Band providing musical accompaniment for the carol singing. Peterborough Gospel Choir will also take to the microphones as will young bagpipe player Kathryn Johnston. The concert will be rounded off with a firework finale at 7pm.

During the event, which is free to attend, Thorpe Halls Chapel will be open and the hospices books of remembrance will be available to view. Events fundraiser Jo Killick said: The Lights of Love event is a favourite with so many people who see it as the start of their festive celebrations. Its a lovely way to remember and celebrate the lives of special people with family and friends.

Once again weve got some brilliant musicians to lead the singing the City of Peterborough Concert Band and bagpipe player Kathryn Johnston. But of course wed like all our guests to bring their best voices with them along with scarves, gloves and hats to keep warm.

The Lights of Love firework finale is the perfect ending to Thorpe Halls open air carol concert

Next months Discovering Bourne will have more on this and, hopefully, news of personal trainer, Claires success.

Back Pain and ChildrenOctober 5th to the 11th was National Back Care Awareness Week, which this year focused on back pain experienced by children.

    Good school baGs

Children are often required to carry bags full of books, PE kits, musical instruments and other equipment to and from school. Parents should try to limit the weight of school bags as much as possible, and invest in a good quality back pack that the child should wear across both shoulders, ideally with a strap across the chest to keep the load close to their body. Packing the bag with the heaviest items (such as laptops and heavy books) closest to the childs body, will also make carrying more comfortable, and less likely to strain the muscles of the back.

    limit screen time

Looking down to use smart phones, tablets and laptops for an extended period can pull the back and neck into an unnatural posture, resulting in pain. Placing limits on the time spent using devices, and encouraging regular breaks, may help to avoid problems. If your child has to use a laptop for homework, consider purchasing a support that elevates the screen to a height that allows him or her to sit up straight to look at it.

    reGular exercise

A sedentary lifestyle is known to contribute to the risk of developing back pain, as well as contributing to obesity. Regular physical activity helps to keep the core muscles that support the spine strong and maintain flexibility, which will help to avoid back pain. Encourage lots of active play, (walking, running, swimming, cycling etc.), to keep your child fit and healthy.

    the riGht bed and pillow

Good quality sleep is vital for both physical and mental development. Make sure that your child has a good sized comfortable bed with a firm mattress and a pillow that supports their head without lifting it too high. One pillow is usually sufficient.

osteopathic treatment for your childs back pain

Your childs back pain may benefit from osteopathic treatment. Using gentle manual therapy, an osteopath will help to resolve any stresses and strains that are affecting their body and relieve their pain.

They can also provide lifestyle advice that may help to prevent the problem from coming back.

    Words from the Mayor

First of all, I would like to thank everybody who made a contribution to last Fridays Mayors Charity Dinner at the Corn Exchange. I trust that the one hundred and fifty who attended had an enjoyable time, as the feedback has been very positive. There was a large number of people who made great efforts to ensure its success. I hesitate to name names as I would probably miss out people who worked in the background, but mention must be made of two Town Clerks; Nelly, who started the process before her recent retirement, and Ian, her successor, for whom nothing was too much trouble. Thanks also to the staff at the Corn Exchange; Rachel and her team of caterers, Carol for the flower arrangements, my fellow Councillors who helped in a variety of ways, to Warners, Johnsons the Cleaners, Discovering Bourne for their assistance, and the numerous shops and firms that donated prizes for our raffle. I am also grateful that we have such fantastic local talent. The children of Andrew Clingos Rock Theatre Group set the tone with a wonderfully enthusiastic potted version of We Will Rock You, the Queen Musical, and Richard Cejer was brilliant later in the evening when giving a dancing opportunity to all of those with stamina and the inclination! We raised almost 1000 on the night, and I am sure that the thirty to forty guests who travelled to Bourne for the event went away with a good impression of our lovely town.

  • November 2015 | D I S C O V E R I N G Bourne 13

In my next article, I wish to write about looking after our neighbours who might be more vulnerable and lonely through the dark winter months, and any suggestions or groups that fill this need are invited to get in touch with me at [email protected]

May I also just advertise my next couple of charity ventures, which are in November? A Beetle Drive will take place on Saturday November 14th at the Abbey Church Hall, between 2pm and 5pm. The event is aimed at all the family, from children to grandmas and grandads, and light refreshments will be served. Tickets are 1.50 per person or 5.00 for a family of four. If you can throw a dice and draw a rudimentary beetle, you can have some fun and who knows, perhaps win.

During the winter, six pubs in the area will host a series of Pub Challenges, in which they will compete with each other in a variety of games, some being traditional pub pursuits and others a little bit different. The first event is at the Masons Arms on Monday November 9th and, along with the host pub, The Red, The Anchor, Smiths, The Wishing Well and the Jubilee will compete. Come along and enjoy the event, and support one of the pubs taking part. There will be food available, at a very modest cost, for contestants and spectators and, of course, all of them are proud of the wide range of beers and drinks which they dispense.

Neck pain can be experienced with a long list of other problems. The combination of symptoms gives us an idea as to why you have neck pain. Here are some of the other symptoms that are commonly experienced with neck pain:

headache This may take place because of trigger points within the muscles that end up referring pain in the head. Impinged nerves in the cervical (neck) spine can also cause headaches.

stiffness Stiffness shows that the muscles are preventing movement so that no additional damage will take place to the fundamental structures of the cervical (neck) spine.

poor ranGe of motion Not being able to turn your head to the left or right or to your shoulder is one of the causes of neck pain. This sign implies that there is tissue spasm or misaligned vertebrae in your neck.

    Schools |

The start of the school year has been special for children and staff at Bourne Westfield as we celebrate our fortieth year. There has been much to be proud of since 1975, and last year was no different. The children and adults at Bourne Westfield have been thinking about what they stand for, and who their positive roles models are.

In the spring, the whole school contributed to the writing of an anti-cyber-bullying song which won first prize in a national competition. Winning meant the children were lucky enough to be visited by athlete, Christine Ohuruogu MBE, who spoke about the importance of doing the right thing and standing up for what you believe in especially when online. This win provided a competitive bug, and some of our Year 3 children went on to win 3000 worth of books for the school library, in a World Book Day competition with the song Lose Yourself Inside a Book.

Winning competitions wasnt the only thing spurring the children on, as they wholeheartedly embarked on community ventures, as Rotakids with the Rotary Club of Bourne. They supported the Dimension Skate Park committee and gave up a Saturday

morning to back the prostate cancer bike rally. The whole school is always outward-looking, supporting many causes, including 2763.70 raised through a sponsored skipping event, in support of the British Heart Foundation.

Our children continue to demonstrate musical and sporting prowess. Our rock band and six piece vocal ensemble were selected to perform at the Lincolnshire Proms in Skegness in June. Similarly, we achieved outstanding sporting success across a wide range of activities; this continued in October, when our cross country teams won all races at the Agilitas Spalding cross country event. The Friends of Westfield have supported our sporting provision by purchasing a 10,000 activity wall.

Last year finished on a high with the Year 6 celebrating their amazing SATs results during a presentation ceremony hosted by, gold medallist gymnast, Craig Heap. His inspirational and motivational speech lifted the rafters and reinforced that there are no limits to realising your dreams.

In September, we welcomed new children and staff to our outstanding team. This year promises to be even more exciting than last year, as we continue to ignite a passion for learning.

Young people in Peterborough will have even more choices when it comes to schools next year now that the Greater Peterborough University Technical College (GPUTC) is built.

The 10 million building, with a 2 million investment into kit will provide a world-class technical education at the Park Crescent campus in Peterborough. It will become home to around 100 students studying either Engineering or the Built Environment from September 2016.The school will also offer traditional GCSEs and A Levels.

Complete with separate engineering and construction workshops, individual, specially tailored science labs, computer design rooms, a top floor restaurant with roof terrace, communal zones and an enormous double-height event space. Anglian Water, the main employer sponsor of the GPUTC will be guaranteeing all students job interviews on successful completion of their studies and will provide students with various employer projects and real-life work experience along the way.

Phil Brown, Anglian Waters Head of Learning and Development and Chair of Governors for the GPUTC, said: At Anglian Water a significant number of our workforce will retire in the next decade and we want the best and brightest engineers and

technicians from this area to leave school with the right skills and experience to join our business.

Prospective students and parents are welcomed to attend the GPUTC open days where they will be able to see the fantastic facilities for themselves and find out more about the courses on offer: Sat 17 October 10am-2pm Tue 24 November 6pm-8pm Thu 4 February 6pm-8pm

The GPUTC offers traditional education in combination with technical subjects, Employer Projects, master classes and workshops that give students real-life work experience. Other sponsors of the GPUTC are Peterborough Regional College, Larkfleet Group, Anglia Ruskin University and Marshalls Aerospace.

Contemporary Indian cuisine in one of Bournes finest buildingsMontaz

    delicious and entirely memorable.

Step off Bournes West Street and youre soon transported to an earlier time, with some extraordinary wooden embellishments surrounding one fireplace, a huge open hearth with carved figures, and a bannister rail and newel posts which are a work of art, (not to mention the two tiny mice on one of the wooden posts in the main eating area). When this building, the old Monkstone House (AD 1671), was the private home of the late and fondly- remembered Jackie Rayner, (one-time woodwork master at both The Grammar School and The Bourne Secondary Modern School), these, we were told, were his creations. Returning now to savour the delights of its present incumbents, the Montaz Indian restaurant, the memories of dear Jackie flood back!

Located in a Grade II-listed building it may be, but thats where the ambitious Montaz group stop looking to the past.

Today is what counts, and here we find a most appealing mixture of traditional Curry, Balti, Biryani and tandoori dishes on the menu, but these are augmented by the refreshingly varied Chefs Recommendations, all eleven of them. This is very good quality Indian and Bangladeshi fare, using locally produced meat and vegetables, wherever possible, and the finest spices from the east, with all meals freshly cooked and carefully presented.

the friendly staff, led by the Manager, Juned Ahmed, are helpful and courteous, always happy to advise customers on the various dishes on the menu. The wine list includes several well-priced and highly recommended options, at least three reds and three whites excellent value at less than 15 a bottle.

the extremely popular Wednesday Night Special, (four courses for 10.95), and the Sunday Lunch Special succeed in attracting a loyal clientele, week after week. There is a take-away service at Montaz, where a 10% discount on the bill operates, whilst free delivery within a five mile radius can be yours, for that quiet night in, (now that Strictly has returned on a Saturday evening!)

A function room, catering for up to thirty-five diners, offers a superb venue for that corporate event, birthday celebration or business function, where privacy makes the evening really special. The very old premises, with rustic beams and the carved wooden delights already described, are juxtaposed by modern toilet facilities and air-conditioning throughout. The lasting impression, taken from our recent trip to the Montaz, is a combination of cosy, delicious and entirely memorable.

Escape for some Winter Sun Try the Canary Islands.

    | Travel Column

As the season has now turned and there is a chill in the air, my thoughts this month turn to a little WINTER SUN.The Canary Islands are part of Spain, and are the ideal holiday spot for those looking for glorious weather, beautiful beaches and swimmable, blue sea.

In February and March, there is the famous carnival for those who are looking for culture, whilst the weather can be positively sun-soaked! The different islands offer a variety of experiences.

The trinity of sun, sea and surf combine beautifully in the Canary Islands, so its no surprise that this archipelago has earned its place among beach holiday royalty. Across Tenerife, Gran Canaria and La Palma, millions head to the

islands every year. But besides being home to Spains largest national park, a wealth of traditional whitewashed towns and with a fascinating volcanic past, theres much more to the Canaries than its sun-baked beaches!

With the most equatorial climate of any European destination, the seven islands which make up the Canaries are all incredibly popular with holidaymakers, and for different reasons. From Fuerteventuras golden sands to the nature trails of La Gomera, Tenerifes bouncing nightlife to the galactic night skies over La Palma. But the best bit? Its always so easy to take a step back from the tourist bubble and enjoy an authentic slice of Canary culture and cuisine.

The volcanic influences on the Canaries are everywhere, from the black sands of Tenerifes El Bollullo and Lanzarotes El Golfo, to Mount Teide the third largest volcano in the world. Some regions of the Canary Islands have an otherworldly feel, with tortured rock formations, craters and a strong concentration of caves and caverns, but rewards those who make exploration a key feature of their itinerary. If youre in search of adventure, put Teide National Park top of your list.

As you might expect from a cluster of islands, water plays a huge part in Canary life. Head to the old town of Puerto de la Cruz and youll discover Cesar Manriques salt water pools of Lido Martianez a thrilling complex of pools and fountains. There are also the thrills and spills of Siam Park in Tenerife, a vast waterpark bursting with rides and attractions. But you can head to virtually any coast for crystal-clear snorkelling and scuba diving. You might even spot an endangered loggerhead turtle!

Call me today and let me arrange your perfect winter sun break

    | Your Finances by Paul Ross, Financial Planner at Landmark IFA Ltd

Pensions Freedom Part 2 Following on from last months pension article, Im going to talk about Flexible Access Drawdown. Previously the majority of retirees would buy an annuity, so firstly I will explain what that is.

Individuals save into a pension during their working life and build up a pension pot. At some point during the first years of retirement, they will usually consider swapping their pot for an income for life, this is called an annuity.

The problem is that rates have been falling over the years and are now seen as poor value. Most people choose to take a static level of income rather than an increasing one which gives them more income whilst they are younger and more able to enjoy it, however over the long term this income loses real value when inflation is taken into account. Once youve made the decision, there is no turning back.....until now as the government is consulting on the idea of being able to sell your annuity so watch this space!

    What is FlexiBle aCCess DraWDoWN

Flexible Access Drawdown (FAD) will give you the flexibility of being able to take unlimited - but taxable - withdrawals combined with the options available to pass funds on

after death. Anyone thinking of moving into Flexi Access Drawdown will have to have to decide whether this is the right option for them and I strongly recommend that professional, independent advice is taken, due to the complexities involved.

Remember your funds within a pension scheme are supposed to last you for the rest of your life and accessing them for a World Cruise or a Lamborghini may be great in the short term, but the new rules on Universal Credit may prevent you claiming benefits once this pot runs low or dry.

One of the things Landmark assess is your attitude to risk, from that we will build you a portfolio which aims to ensure that your pension pot lasts as long as possible. It is therefore essential that you review your strategy on a regular basis, as you may need to amend your plans. Before moving into FAD you and your adviser would need

to understand your risk tolerance and loss capacity, which would then allow you both together to build a suitable investment portfolio to give you the best chance of achieving your plans.

The last subject to mention is on the morbid side - death. What happens to my pension when I die?. Some people think it dies with you, which is completely wrong as it does pass down to your family or other beneficiaries. In simple terms, you can nominate anyone you like to receive benefits from your pension on your death, if you die before the age of 75 all benefits are paid tax-free, if you die after the age of 75 the benefits will be taxed in line with the beneficiaries own income tax rates (this applies from April 2016 onwards).

Forgive the self promotion, but these issues are complicated and important, so have a chat with us and we will explain further.

The type of evidence used in family proceedings has changed radically in recent years. With the universality of social media and internet sites, peoples lives are often conducted in the full glare of the public gaze, whether they like it or not.

The most recent example has been from the Ashley Madison website which aims to facilitate extra-marital affairs. Hackers have published a data file for download which contains customer details potentially hugely embarrassing, as well as marriage-wrecking.

There is often a misunderstanding about when adultery occurs in a marriage. If you have a sexual affair whilst you are still married, it doesnt matter that youve separated, it is still adultery right up until a decree absolute. But it is very rare to engage a private detective to obtain proof of adultery nowadays. You wouldnt start a divorce on this ground unless the respondent admits the adultery with an unknown person.

The Ashley Madison website is actually going to name and shame people, which could be proof in its own right, if needed.

Facebook is another fruitful source of evidence in family proceedings nowadays. The courts strongly discourage reliance on Facebook downloads, but nonetheless some of the more blatant postings can provide compelling evidence in both divorce and children cases, if youre not careful.

The moral of this tale is obvious if you want your private life to stay that way, use the internet with care!

At one time I was happy to recommend the use of free antivirus solutions, such as AVG and Avast (the two leading free solutions). However, in recent years, things have changed and viruses now account for less than 40% of the threat to your online security, as criminals turn to other, more successful methods, for stealing your data or loading malicious content onto your system. as such my recommendation is now to invest in a full internet security suite.

One common response I get when I give this recommendation is, But Ive been running AVG/Avast for years and I dont have any problems. This is a flawed argument, as the cyber criminals do not want you to know that you have been attacked and infected. Generally, they want their malicious content to sit hidden on your system with you blissfully unaware. So, just because you cant detect it or see it, doesnt mean that you have not been compromised.

areas where the free anti-virus solutions are weak and usually fall short are:

COMPLEx MALICIOuS FILES: Over the years, malware have become more complex, aggressive, and

undetectable by antivirus software. This is partly d
