One of the weird aspects of my job is the forward planning needed, so that, most of the time, you

are focused on things which will occur several weeks ahead. Like me, therefore, you will perhaps be a little alarmed to see an advertisement in this month’s issue of your jam-packed “Discovering Bourne” which is for “Back to School” items, near to advance notices for meetings for late September! Slow down world…please!!!

Just let’s make the most of what is turning out to be a wonderfully warm and dry summer. Please take a look at the many suggestions included in this month’s issue. The “Schools Out” feature, alongside school holiday clubs in both Bourne and Market Deeping, sounds tempting. Why not try to win tickets for a fabulous day at Twin Lakes? You don’t even have to leave town to enjoy yourselves – we’ve got food and craft suggestions, as well as gardening and computer ideas and advice. It’s the height of summer, but a football story can’t be far away! Grimsby Town FC haven’t

enjoyed too much good publicity of late and the following snippet which caught my eye won’t help their cause very much either. A Mariners’ fan, (fifty year old, Kenny Meech) has been found guilty of assaulting a steward with an inflatable shark, during a match at Barnet FC in March. He was convicted of common assault, given a 12-month conditional discharge, ordered to pay £100 in compensation, £700

court costs and a victims’ surcharge of £70. It’s no wonder he said he felt “deflated” by the judgement – pity his shark wasn’t deflated too!

No such feelings of deflation here, with balmy summer days, and the holiday mood permeating all things. However, having “Number Two Son” in Ecuador and The Galapagos Islands for a month will prove a challenge, albeit a quiet one!

The offerings in this month’s issue have a distinct holiday feel and there are plenty of ideas to get youngsters interested and involved.

This month, to accompany our featuring Smith’s, the popular Bourne hostelry, we invite Judy Smith to sit in the “Hot Seat”. Until retiring from the family grocery business, (which was to become transformed into “Smith’s” in 2003), Judy and her husband John spent their working lives together, in the much-revered emporium on North Street, as the fourth generation of purveyors of the finest foods and wines. Sadly, John died earlier this year, but their son, David, who, with wife Helen and grandchildren, Isabella, (10), and Scott, (8), frequently returns to Bourne from their Walton-on-Thames home, to “keep her on her toes, performing plays when they visit”.

Judy has been on Bourne Town Council for seventeen years. She has been the Town Council representative on Dyke Village Hall Committee throughout this time, also the Chair of the Amenities Committee, and was Mayor in 2005-2006. At the present time, she is Vice-Chair of the District Council; she represents Bourne East on Bourne Town Council; she is Chair of the Bourne Women’s branch of the Royal British Legion and is also on the Abbey Church Social Committee.

Her interests include all sorts of music (“except the way-out stuff”) and the Arts. She has supported Bourne Youth Theatre for many years and loves going to local concerts. An avid traveller, both at home and abroad, Judy has visited France many times, as a member of the Town Twinning Association, and is still involved with the same family in Doudeville, Normandy.

How many people, I wonder, can claim to have ever lived in only two houses in their lifetime? Judy can … where she was born in Victoria Place, and then in Gladstone Street, where she has lived since her marriage to John.

| In the Hot Seat 1)Where were you born, and what is your fondest memory of your childhood?In our family home in Victoria Place, Bourne. As the house backed on to the Abbey Lawns, I have fond memories of the music, mainly marches, which was played before the Saturday afternoon football matches. Also, the daily goods train to and from Sleaford.

2) Who has had the greatest influence on your life and why?Mr Birkbeck, my history teacher at Bourne Grammar School, who was a stable influence, as well as my husband John.

3) Which two characters, (alive or not), would you most enjoy sharing a meal with and why?Ringo Starr, because ever since seeing The Beatles live at Leicester’s De Montfort Hall (for £1), I’ve always liked drummers in the bands and would love to be able to play the drums myself. John Major, who took a lot of flak from his backbenchers, but who kept steady and was more successful than people thought he would be.

4) How would you describe yourself in just five words?Independent, unpredictable, sociable, caring and busy!

5) If there was one thing which you could change about Bourne, what would it be and why?For youngsters to have their own Skate park. Other towns, smaller than Bourne, have them and there’s no trouble. When we were young, we played out, took risks and there were no problems; nobody minded if the children made a noise, not like today.

6) What advice would you give to a 16 year old you?Work hard, do some serious training, (an apprenticeship or university), get qualifications because then the world is your oyster.

A little bit of History |

The rise in popularity of the supermarket over the past forty years has meant the closure of many of our small shops, particularly those dealing in specialist goods, and those that survive struggle against rising costs and competition from the Internet.

One stop shopping has become so popular among housewives that the face of our town centres has changed dramatically with services such as banks, insurance companies, estate agents and charity shops taking over the premises previously occupied by traditional retail outlets such as the butcher, the baker and the candlestick maker.

The most memorable of the traditional shops in this town was John Smith of Bourne, grocers to the gentry from the mid-19th century until recent times.

The shop was opened by John Smith at No 25 North Street in November 1857 and for almost 150 years, the business was run by four generations of the Smith family in the Victorian fashion, supplying products at the quality end of the market, and the store exuded a gentlemanly air of courtesy and service well into the age when the self-service supermarket was beginning to reign supreme.

All through the years the shop maintained its charm and old world character with wooden shelves packed with products and at one time groceries were delivered by a boy on a bicycle. Cold lunches were served to regular customers on market day when the shop became a meeting place, hung with hams and replete with butter and cheese made locally.

Customers were greeted by the aroma of freshly-ground coffee and the scent of spices, unhurried personal service,

scrubbed floorboards and a polished mahogany counter worn smooth over the years by thousands of daily transactions, a delightful change to the hurly burly of the checkout tills we know today while the window displays and metal advertising signs reminded us of a bygone age when our daily life proceeded at a more leisurely pace.

When the shop eventually closed in December 1998, the town lost a small part of its traditional role for customer service and its death knell coincided with the burgeoning success of the supermarkets.

In the autumn of 2001, planning permission was granted to convert the premises into a public house which opened in May 2002 and the new owners incorporated several of the original features in the refurbished premises which became known as Smith’s of Bourne, still a popular call but with a very different clientele.

Underlying all of the light-hearted banter, however, is the fact that Smith’s is at the very heart of one hugely successful organisation, at a time when the icy winds continue to rip through the licensed trade, and once-popular pubs cease trading in towns and villages alike.

Co-managers Ashley Woolf and Chris Ward offer several reasons why the public continue to call Smith’s their number-one eating, meeting and drinking spot. At this time of year, for example, the garden and well-stocked play area attract many families to Smith’s and al- fresco wining and dining is a very popular option. However, Smith’s goes much further than just your typical, child-friendly “pub-grub” operation. In Head Chef, Jimmy Ramsey, for instance, there is a wealth of experience (gained at both The Olive Branch at Clipsham and Hambleton’s Finch’s Arms) brought into the kitchen.

The Thurlby family farm in Tallington is the source of the beef and lamb dishes (available either outside or in the many fascinatingly furnished rooms indoors), whilst home-made pizzas (from dough created on site) and a range of tempting pasta dishes and salads are amongst many attractive, reasonably priced choices on the menu. As you’d expect, there is a comprehensive wine list to help create an enjoyable evening or lunch, and not just a quick snack.

Since its inception, Smith’s has always been a real-ale establishment and there are, at present, six different brews on the bar, alongside the increasingly popular “craft lagers”,(Fullers Frontier and Meantime London Pale Ale).

The ninth annual Beer Festival has just been staged and all eyes are already looking forward to the Cider and Sausage Festival at the end of August. To provide novelty, as well as exposing the good drinking folk of Bourne to the finest beers from around the shires, there are “themed beer

months”. For a whole month, a chosen county/country will be the source of all the real ales on offer. Yorkshire, Cumbria and Lancashire have already stood up to the test, and Wales is soon to be featured.

Tai Chi Master Unlocks Secrets in Bourne Workshops!

Internationally renowned Tai Chi Master, Joe Lok, gave two sell-out workshops in Bourne on June 15th and 16th. Master Lok is the 20th inheritor of the “Dragon Gate Taoist Tradition”, and the founder of Phoenix Qigong, which involves exercises for body, mind and spirit. Having recently

finished a tour of the U.S.A, Joe is now over in the U.K. and Ray Pawlett, the founder of Bourne-based Ki-Ways, was delighted to have hosted this hugely successful event. Joe’s long association with this part of the world actually began when he was studying in Lincoln in the 1970s.

The workshop itself comprised of gentle meditational movements that relax the body, mind and spirit, and allow self-development and healing to happen on a very deep level. The workshop participants varied greatly, from younger people and seniors, mixing with Tai Chi experts and total novices. Everybody had an excellent time and learned a lot. For example, one of the exercises, “Taoist breathing”, only takes about three minutes to perform and can easily fit it into our busy routines, but the effects on our bodies and nervous systems are huge.

Master Lok was very pleased with the popularity of the workshops, and hopes are high for a return visit later in the year. “I think that we can say that Bourne is starting to get noticed in the international world of Tai Chi!” commented Ray Pawlett, who is now authorised by Joe to teach the opening stages of his system.

“Dare to be Different” have dared to be just that – they are now “Little Miracles of Bourne”Launched on July 12th 2015, Little Miracles of Bourne will be supporting children in the Bourne area with disabilities and life-limiting conditions, along with their families. They will be providing education, advice and activities, to allow these children and their families to become part of the community, and enjoy life in a way that most of us take for granted.

A weekly parent support group at the Bourne Children’s Centre will be held, where parents can share their struggles and worries, receiving advice and support from other parents and also from visiting professionals. Having an ill child, or a child with disabilities, can be very distressing and is often a lonely experience, so this emotional support and practical assistance when they really need it will be really valuable.

Activities will be provided for these children, who are often excluded from local social and sporting clubs, including a swimming club, horse-riding lessons and youth groups. Assisting the children to integrate into the community

and join in mainstream clubs will also raise awareness of disability within the community.

For four years, many families have been helped by “Dare to be Different”. However, by becoming Little Miracles of Bourne, a branch of a larger charity, they can benefit from their considerable experience and purchasing power for services. They are hoping to work alongside businesses, in order to bring more opportunities to children with disabilities and life-limiting conditions in Bourne. If you have any ideas or suggestions for joint fund-raising activities, they would love to hear from you.

ROTARY RIDE 2015

The Rotary Clubs of Bourne and Bourne St. Peter joined together to take part in “Rotary Ride 2015” on Father’s Day, Sunday June 21st. The aim was to promote the awareness of prostate cancer and they were supported by the “Rotakids” of Bourne Westfield Academy. This was a nationwide Rotary initiative, with events taking place across the country, in various formats.

The Bourne event was a Static Ride and took place in conjunction with the Bourne Classic Car Show on the Well Head.

The Ride had two aspects. Firstly, The “1Life Gym” from Bourne Leisure Centre provided and manned two exercise cycles, and visitors were invited to ride and/or guess the number of miles ridden during the day.

Secondly, The Bourne Wheelers set up a turbo trainer for an open time-trial contest, with a prize for the fastest mile on the day.

Winners were T. Butler, (who correctly predicted that fifty-five miles would be ridden on the exercise bikes) and Jonny Palmer, (who recorded a time of 1minute 18.6seconds for his mile.) Congratulations and a £20 cheque to them both.

Although the objective for the day was to raise awareness, it was fantastic to also see a donation of £350 being sent to the Prostate Cancer Research Charity.

Both Rotary Clubs would like to express their appreciation and indebtedness to 1Life Gym and Bourne Wheelers who made the event happen and to the Bourne Motor Racing Club whose Classic Car Show provided such an excellent venue.

PEOPLE WHO SING Bourne ChoralMusic is all around us and whilst listening can be a great pleasure, performing music can provide even greater satisfaction. There are obviously many ways to enjoy music, but as far as singing is concerned, an opportunity exists, on your doorstep, with Bourne Choral.

Many people enjoy singing. Just think of mass efforts at sporting events and the popularity of choirs, such as Military Wives. Maybe you are unsure, or perhaps a bit nervous about developing this interest further. We can provide that opportunity for you to sing. Bourne Choral is a very friendly group of people who meet together to sing and have an enjoyable time. Members include those who cannot read music at all and others with a wide experience of singing and performing. What we all share is a love of singing, in a relaxed social atmosphere.

The choir performs two main concerts a year, one early in December and one in the spring, as well as more informal concerts at various locations in the area. We sing a variety of music, chosen to suit the musical abilities of members, which gives everyone a chance to make a genuine contribution to the final performance.

We are constantly told what a busy world it is and how little time there is left for relaxation. Singing can provide a break from day-to-day pressures. Putting aside around ninety minutes a week to do something very enjoyable can really help. Additionally, we are told that singing is very good for our general health – not many interests, so enjoyable, fall into this category!

We are enjoying a summer break and rehearsals resume on Monday September 7th, when we will be preparing for the Christmas concerts, including one on Saturday December 12th. This programme includes ‘Christmas is Coming’, a modern and lively piece, as well as other well- known seasonal music.

| Food

Raspberry, White Chocolate and Waffle PuddingMEtHOd1. Preheat oven to 200 ‘C (180’C if fan assisted). Dice

the waffles into 2cm pieces, roughly chop the white chocolate into small chunks.

2. Place half the waffle pieces into a deep ovenproof dish, scatter half of the white chocolate and raspberries on top, then repeat the layers with the remaining waffle, white chocolate and raspberries.

3. Mix the caster sugar and the flour together in a bowl, add the crème fraiche and the eggs. Whisk until well blended and spoon the mixture over the top of the raspberries, waffle and white chocolate mix.

4. Bake in the middle of the oven for about 30 minutes or until golden brown. Remove from the oven and allow to cool for 10 minutes. Serve with vanilla ice cream.

INGREdIENtS:2 x packets of sweet toasting waffles150g white chocolate300g frozen raspberries50g caster sugar1 x tablespoon of plain flour500ml crème fraiche3 eggs

Following on from last month’s Cookie Box article, where Becky Andrew described the ins and outs of her American style baking business, this month we’re taking a look at another side of her baking and business skills.

In 2010, Becky sought a way to keep Cookie Box profitable during the winter months, when the outdoor festivals and markets aren’t quite so inviting. Since then, Becky has spent time developing delicious pudding recipes for a more traditional side to her business, selling her beautifully wrapped sponge puddings in shops, as well as at events and farmers markets throughout the Midlands, Lincolnshire and Leicestershire.

“The puddings can be refrigerated or frozen and then simply reheated, which makes them perfect for last minute treats and unexpected dinner guests. I’ve

known people to give them as gifts to hosts and also known a few to unwrap them and pretend they have made them themselves!” Becky explains.

Becky specialises in Christmas Puddings, producing each and every one personally by hand. The season takes months of planning and preparation. The apples and eggs are locally sourced and Becky caters for gluten- and dairy- free customers too. She also ensures that her Christmas Puddings are suitable for vegetarians and can be made alcohol-, peel- or nut-free, on request.

Early June saw children at Old Priory Junior Academy in Plympton, Devon, being prevented from carrying out all gymnastic activities during break times. A spate of minor injuries to wrists and backs had prompted the decision. Unsurprisingly, a number of parents saw it as ridiculous, with a Mr Lewis Harvey commenting, “It’s health and safety gone mad. Kids should be able to do what they want in the playground, as long as they don’t hurt anyone else.”

Interim head teacher, Emma Hermon-Wright, said: “Ultimately, the safety and wellbeing is our responsibility and it is paramount to everything we do here.” It was not trying to stop children from having fun, the school said, and the ban was temporary while staff worked out a way of allowing them to take part in gymnastic activities under staff supervision. Whatever!

On the same day, a campaign group called “ukactive” reported on some shocking findings, for example, only half of seven-year-olds in England are active for an hour a day, and pleading that more activity should take place in the classroom. In the “Generation Inactive” report, researchers argue that Body Mass Index (BMI), which measures weight and height, gives little indication of a child’s physical fitness and says a child can be slim but still unhealthy. “We should focus on the health of our hearts, not just the size of our waists,” say the authors. They argue that the way to improve a child’s fitness is to incorporate exercise throughout the school day. Walking to school and standing in lessons are ways in which a child’s inactivity can be improved.

Former children’s commissioner, Professor Sir Al Aynsley-Green said, “Whether walking, cycling or being active in and out of PE lessons, providing children with opportunities to be active throughout the day, before, during and after school, is key to engaging even the most disengaged children.”

A government spokesman commented, “Tackling obesity is a major priority for this government, which is why, as part of our plan for education, we want to continue to encourage children to enjoy sports - both in lessons and after school.” Evidently, this won’t include handstands and cartwheels though!

| Health Wellhead Practice Excellence in head to toe Complementary Healthcare

Massage for the Triathlete – or any athlete, for that matter! The triathlon season is well under way and each year its popularity seems to increase.

With this in mind, it is important for athletes at all levels to consider sports massage as part of their training routine. Massage can be used in a variety of ways - as a pre-event “flush through” of metabolic waste in preparation for the big event; as a post-event way to assess for injury; or as general conditioning throughout your training programme to ensure your body is in tip-top condition for the season.

The ideal frequency of a massage would be weekly for the elite athlete, or weekly to monthly for the recreational athlete, depending on the scheduled events. Try to time your sessions in and around your training but, for pre-race treatment, leave at least 24 hours before the event to achieve the greatest benefit from the treatment.

Some clients respond well to deep-tissue massage techniques and specific work before an event, whilst others prefer stretching techniques such as Soft Tissue Release or Muscle Energy (PNF) Techniques. It is important to establish a good trust between you and your therapist and discuss your requirements at every session. It may be that you require some taping to provide extra reassurance; this can be discussed at the time.

Post-event treatments will first assess for injury and deal accordingly; this may include soft tissue techniques, lymph drainage to reduce swelling or advice on active recovery to help flush metabolic waste. Where possible, it would be beneficial to get a post-event massage on-site after the race or even use an ice bath for a few minutes to benefit from the treatment the pros receive after every event. Full treatments should be booked the following day to ensure you are ready for action next time!

Don’t forget, foam rollers can be used daily to get into those lats, quads, hamstrings and calves, and massage balls are perfect for pressure points in the glutes. Stay on top of your conditioning and see your performance improve as well as your enjoyment!

Shoulder Problems What most people call the shoulder is really several joints that combine with tendons and muscles to allow a wide range of motion in the arm — from scratching your back to combing your hair!

Mobility has its price, however. It may lead to increasing problems with instability or impingement of the soft tissue or bony structures in your shoulder, resulting in pain. You may feel pain only when you move your shoulder, or all of the time. The pain may be temporary or it may continue with the inability to lie on it. It usually affects the ability to sleep!

In the June edition of Discovering Bourne, I outlined my five objectives for the year ahead. Number 5, to be explained here, is all about trying to engender a greater pride in the lovely town in which we live, and reflecting that regard in how we improve its environment and respect our fellow townspeople.

Most people display a natural sense of responsibility to others, and many go out of their way to improve Bourne as a friendly place to live, by routine acts of kindness and charitable contributions. Responses to the Neighbourhood Plan Group would seem to indicate that the town’s ‘friendliness’ is a major positive factor, particularly felt by relative newcomers to Bourne.

But there is a minority who, either through thoughtlessness or a total lack of concern for their neighbours, treat the town with total disregard.

The problem is reflected in the recent social media campaign about dog fouling. Does the solution lie in an increase in the placement of bins suitable for the disposal of dog waste? That may be part of the answer, but responsible dog owners, who are in the majority, find a suitable receptacle for dog litter, either in public bins or by taking it home for disposal, and have no need for extra bins. It is arguable that irresponsible dog owners who do not clear up after their pet or, more mysteriously, some who clear up, and then leave little bags dangling from tree branches or in the hedgerows, would not improve their behaviour if there were bins on every

street corner. The Town Council have a working party considering the problem, but how does the responsible citizen impress upon the minority, who couldn’t care less, the desirability and need to show due consideration to others?

The problem is not just confined to dog litter, but applies to litter in general. The passageway between the Town Hall and the Corn Exchange car park is a nightmare for litter, or was, until it was cleaned for the carnival. The unpleasantness of that area was living proof that a small number of humans have the capacity to be as dirty as the pigeons! Cigarette butts, chewing gum and worse were discarded, when there is a bin within ten paces of the entrance.

My early thoughts were to suggest that, when we are out, we each reclaim one piece of litter and dispose of it appropriately and so the town would see the benefit. I do implore decent folk to keep the town as clean as possible, but the greater challenge is to confront the litter bugs in the first place, to change mind-sets and convince those who abuse our town to respect it. I do not have a convincing solution, but if anyone wishes to contribute ideas or views, or just comment on the article, please e-mail me at [email protected].

1. RosesRemember to check roses regularly for pests and blackspot and other diseases, and spray if necessary with a recommended fungicide and/or insecticide. And if your garden is in need of some flower power, roses are the perfect solution.

2. PruningMany summer-flowering plants that have finished flowering can be cut back now and may produce further flushes of flowers. After pruning, give the plants a quick pick-me-up by watering on a high potash liquid feed.

3. Ericaceous plants Rhododendrons, camellias and azaleas will be setting their flower buds for next year, so it’s important that they never go short of water at this time of year, or the flower buds may fail next spring. Feeding will also produce more and better flowers. Mulching with bark or similar products will help maintain soil moisture levels and insulate the roots from damaging high temperatures.

4. WateringMake sure your plants produce a display to be proud of, by giving them just the right amount of water they need. Well-established plants may not need regular watering but newly planted ones, bedding plants and plants in containers will need regular watering.

5. Planning autumn planting Start planning that new border. Look for plants with a long flowering period and those that have two or more seasons of interest with flowers, fruit, colourful stems and interesting foliage. Choose plants with different foliage colours and shapes, and remember that while evergreens help bring structure and winter interest, they may need livening up with deciduous plants. Use winter and spring bedding plants to increase the seasons of interest, and plant bulbs for extra splashes of colour.

6. VegetablesThe harvesting season is now in full swing, so make sure you pick crops that are ready. Leave them too long and they’ll lose flavour and tenderness. Now’s a good time to sow endive, radish, spring cabbage for next year, winter varieties of spinach and main-crop turnips. Having spent lots of time and effort growing your fruit and veg to perfection, protect it with fleece or small-mesh plastic netting – or, if you have a large area, put up a fruit cage.

don’t get stung by holiday scamsNew figures have revealed that British holidaymakers lost £2.2m in 2014, through a series of internet-based scams and deceptions.

The National Fraud Intelligence Bureau revealed that more than 1,500 cases of holiday booking fraud were reported in 2014. The most common types of fraud related to fake air tickets, bogus online adverts, hacked accounts and dodgy websites, with those aged between 30 and 49 years old the most commonly targeted.

If you’re looking for a holiday deal, there are easy steps you can take to help safeguard yourself and your holiday.

1. Research your company and accommodation Do conduct a thorough online search to ensure the company’s credibility. Online forums ask for other customers’ experiences. Visit long-standing review sites such as Trip Advisor, and look at overall customer feedback.

2. Is the company ATOL and/or ABTA registered? By law, every UK travel company which sells air holidays and flights is required to hold an ATOL, (Air Travel Organiser’s Licence). The ATOL offers consumers financial protection in the event of a travel company failure or if something goes wrong and you’re stranded abroad.

ABTA, the UK’s largest travel body, provides a code of conduct for their members to abide by. Customers travelling with ABTA-registered companies’ members can be reassured they have a greater level of protection should things go wrong.

3. Pay with a credit or debit card The majority of people defrauded in 2014 paid with a bank transfer or cash – with no means of redress available. Only a small proportion of those scammed paid by credit or debit card, where assistance can be sought, after the event.

4. Watch out for copycat websites Copycat websites can be incredibly similar to legitimate sites and use advertisements to appear high on Google searches. Customers are asked to fill in forms, charging an ‘administration’ fee, even though there’s no administration needed and you can usually go through the process yourself for free.

4. EHIC Cards and Country Visa’s Travellers looking for a European Health Insurance Card (EHIC) are a popular target for copycat sites. EHIC cards are free from the NHS.

| Consumer Advice

I am writing this on the hottest day of the year, and my trips to the allotment are more frequent as the crops need plenty of water: otherwise all of my efforts earlier in the season will be in vain.

Putting mulch around vegetables will help retain the moisture, particularly if they are put down after rain, and watering in the evening when it is cooler. However, as it is drier, the weeds are less rampant and the occasional hoeing keeps them at bay, so – more time watering, less time weeding.

During this month, you should see a good return on the time that has been invested earlier in the year: visits to the supermarket fruit and veg counter should be far more infrequent, as you have a daily supply of wonderful fresh produce. What could be more rewarding than to eat a meal where the fresh produce is the result of your hard work?

There are still one or two crops that you can sow, mainly lettuces and salad leaves, spring onions, radishes, Japanese onion seeds (in situ) and a last batch of carrots and turnips. However, as you harvest your crops and create some space, you can transplant winter and spring cauliflowers, sprouting broccoli and kale, and sow a few more seeds for spring cabbage. Strawberry runners that have been potted can be transplanted into a sunny, fertile spot. Keep them well-watered, and planting them through weed-suppressant material should help keep the moisture in and the soil warmer.

If you wish to store garlic onions and shallots, they will need to be thoroughly dried out and this can be achieved by lifting them carefully and laying them on the ground in the sun, or spreading them out on racks. They can then be strung and hung, but not in the kitchen as the atmosphere is too moist. Somewhere cool and dry is advisable.

Don’t forget to pinch out the tops of climbing beans when they reach the top of the canes, as this will encourage growth lower down, and harvest regularly before they become tough and stringy: you can let some grow on to produce bean seeds for next year.

Google have invested a great deal of time and effort in facial recognition, and the benefits are part of their photo editing application, Picasa. You can use this tool to automatically tag the name of family and friends and to create a ‘personal’ album for each.

To turn on the feature you need to have it ticked in Picasa – Options – Name Tags.

Google will now start to scan all of your images to find human faces. It will then sort them into small groups of ‘like’ faces for you to start tagging.

Initially, all faces will be in the Unnamed Section but they will be moved to a named

folder as you start to tag each person. You are now ready to start tagging faces, ‘training’ Picasa to recognise features.

Click on Add a name and type in the name of the person being tagged.

Each time you tag a ‘new’ person a Picasa profile will be created for them. Just click on New Person to create that profile.

As more people are tagged, a list begins to build in the People section and Picasa ‘learns’ what that individual looks like at various stages of their life. From that point on, when it recognises a photograph of that individual, it will add a copy to that person’s image folder.

Obviously, Picasa will find many faces on your photographs that are of no interest. To remove these and ‘ignore’ them in future – click on the X symbol at the top right of the image and select ‘Ignore Person’.

To view all the tagged images of an individual, you simply click on their name in the People section of Picasa. You will now see all of the tagged images for that person. You may also see a message about ‘suggestions’. These are images that Picasa thinks is that person. You can view these and select them in one click using the ‘confirm all’ button.

Budget Changes – Summer 2015George Osborne’s latest budget made some significant changes and I have summarised the main points below:

INCOME tAX: • The personal allowance, which is the amount

one is allowed to earn before paying any income tax, is to be raised from £10,600 this tax year to £11,000 for the tax year 2015/16, and then to £12,500 by 2020/21.

• The higher rate threshold will also be increased, so anyone with earnings of over £43,000 will pay tax on that part of their earning at the rate of 40%; this threshold increases to £43,615 for 2017/18. The Chancellor’s stated aim is to make this threshold £50,000.

• Tax relief on buy-to-let mortgage payments will be restricted to basic rate and this will be phased in over four years.

• Rent-a-Room relief will be increased to £7,500 per year; this is the amount that you can “earn” by letting a room in your main residence without paying any tax on the proceeds.

tAX-EFFICIENt INVEStMENtS:

• The Chancellor confirmed what was already known about Help-to-Buy ISAs and personal saving allowances; also the rules allowing ISA withdrawals to be replaced by the end of the tax year, will help to maximise benefits for those forced to access their savings temporarily.

PENSIONS:

• “High Earners” – those that earn over £150,000 per year will have the amount that they can contribute into their pensions reduced from £40,000 to £10,000 per year on a tapered basis; the allowance will reduce by £1 for every £2 over the higher rate threshold.

• Lifetime allowance will be reduced from £1.25million to £1million for 2016/17 and, for 2017/18, the allowance will be then increased annually in line with the Consumer Prices Index. There is transitional relief available for those who already have pension values above £1million which must be applied for by April 5th 2017.

• The Chancellor is “open to further radical changes in pensions” and will issue a consultation “green paper”.

• Changes in extending pension freedoms to existing annuity holders were deferred for another year until April 2017; plans for a secondary market will be outlined in the autumn.

dIVIdENdS:

• From April 2016, the taxation of dividends will be changed. Instead of the current 10% tax credit, an individual will be able to receive up to £5,500 in dividend income tax-free; above this the rates are 7.5% for basic rate taxpayers, 32.5% for higher rate and 38.1% for additional rate taxpayers.

INHERItANCE tAX

• The current nil rate band of £325,000 per individual will remain unchanged until April 2018.

• An extra allowance starting at £100,000, and increasing to £175,000 in 2020/21, will be introduced for those leaving property to a direct descendent such as children or grandchildren. This extra allowance will be transferrable between spouses as per the current allowance.

• Those with estates valued at over £2million will have the extra allowance scaled back at the rate of £1 for every £2 over the £2million threshold.

CORPORAtION tAX

• Corporation tax will be reduced from the current rate of 20% to 19% in 2017 and then 18% in 2020.

• From April 2017, companies with annual taxable profits of over £20million will pay tax on a quarterly basis rather than annually.

NAtIONAL INSURANCE

• The £2,000 NI employment allowance which reduces the overall cost of employer National Insurance will increase to £3,000 form April 2016, but will not be available to those companies whose sole employee is the director.

WELFARE REFORMS

• Working age benefits, such as Tax Credit, but not including statutory maternity, paternity and sick pay, will be frozen for four years and the household benefit cap will be reduced to £20,000 (£23,000 in London).

• Child Tax Credit will be restricted to two children, born after April 2017.

• 18-21 year olds on Universal Credit will have to apply for an apprenticeship or traineeship, gain work-based skills or take a work placement within six months of claiming.

• The national minimum wage will increase from £6.50 to £6.70 per hour for those over 21; rates for younger workers and apprentices are also increased. From April 2016, over 25s will be entitled to a “National Living Wage” of £7.20 per hour.

Whilst every care has been taken to ensure that this information is correct and in accordance with law and guidance, you should take independent advice before acting upon it. The announcements may change before becoming law.

Making a will is the only way you can decide what happens to your property and possessions after your death.

If you do have a will, make sure you review it from time to time, as your personal circumstances may have changed significantly since you made it. If you die without a will, your estate will be distributed according to the law, rather than according to your wishes.

Making a will is not as difficult as people sometimes think - in most instances it is a fairly straightforward and inexpensive procedure.

Not unless you have made a will, naming them as a beneficiary.

If you die without making a will, then the rules of intestacy apply. Unfortunately, they do not provide for co-habitees, only for those who are married or who have entered into a civil partnership. Your partner may be able to make a claim against your estate in certain circumstances.

I have step-children and I have raised them as my own children since they were young - will they inherit when I die?

They will not benefit, unless you provide for them in your will. If you die without making a will, then

the rules of intestacy apply. Unfortunately, they make no provision for step-children.

I have young children. If me and my husband die, will my parents be able to bring them up?

Not necessarily, unless you have appointed a guardian in your will, whether it be a relative or a friend. No-one will be legally entitled to take care of the children, and an application would have to be made to court.

If I do not make a will, does that mean that my spouse or civil partner will get everything?

No, this will not necessarily happen. If you die without making a will, then the rules of intestacy have to be followed and this could mean that your spouse or civil partner does not inherit everything.

Bullying at Work – Know your RightsBullying can make someone feel anxious and humiliated. The stress, loss of self-confidence and self-esteem caused by bullying can lead to job insecurity, illness, absence from work, and even resignation. Job performance can be affected and relations in the workplace may suffer.

Employers are responsible for preventing bullying behaviour. It is in their interests to make it clear to everyone that such behaviour will not be tolerated — the costs to the business may include poor employee relations, low morale, inefficiency and potentially the loss of staff.

WHAt CAN EMPLOYEES dO ABOUt BULLYING IN tHE WORKPLACE?

Let your manager, union, or staff representative know of the problem and seek advice from your local Citizens Advice, or ACAS on 0300 123 11 00. Talk to colleagues to find out if anyone else is suffering, or if anyone has witnessed what has happened to you.

If another colleague is harassing you, you can talk to your manager about it. If it’s your line manager who’s harassing you, you should approach a more senior manager or a member of the Human Resources Department. If your manager is a sole trader or the firm’s managing director or owner, you can still take formal action to resolve the situation.

Keep a diary of all incidents and tell the person to stop whatever it is they are doing that is

causing you distress: they may be unaware of the effect of their actions. If you do decide to make a formal complaint, follow your employer’s procedures, which should give you information about who to complain to and how your complaint will be dealt with.

LEGAL ACtION tO RESOLVE tHE PROBLEM

Employers have a duty of care for all their employees. If the mutual trust and confidence between employer and employee is broken – for example through bullying at work – then an employee can potentially resign and claim constructive dismissal at an Employment Tribunal on the grounds of breach of contract (as long as they have worked for the employer for two years). Employers are usually responsible in law for the acts of their workers. A breach of contract may also have occurred as under the Health and Safety at Work Act 1974, employers are responsible for the health, safety and welfare at work of all employees.

Before taking legal action to resolve any problem at work, it is important that you take advice from, for example, ACAS or your local Citizens Advice.

Sergeant Mosley’s Musings - “Canine Considerations”As I write this article, during the early hours on a night shift, it is still very warm, after daytime temperatures nudging thirty degrees. Only today, when I got into my car after parking in town, the wall of heat that hit me, as I opened the door, knocked me back.

With this thought in mind, why, why, why do people still think nothing of leaving a dog inside a car in such heat? Every year, dogs die in hot cars. I’m not going to hold back in my description, but it is an agonisingly painful and stressful death.

Many people still believe that it’s ok to leave a dog in a car on a warm day if the windows are left open or they’re parked in the shade, but the truth is, it’s still a very dangerous situation for the dog. Dogs regulate their body temperatures by panting, and in a small enclosed space such as a car, a panting dog will simply not be able to get enough fresh air to keep their body temperature at a safe level. The dog will then begin to develop symptoms of heatstroke.

If you see a dog suffering in such conditions, and displaying signs of heatstroke, don’t be afraid to dial 999.

Police officers have a power of entry to prevent suffering to animals under Section 19 of the Animal Welfare Act 2006, and I make no apology when I say my colleagues and I will not hesitate to use that power. Not only will the owner face a repair bill for the damage to their vehicle, but may also face prosecution for causing unnecessary suffering to a protected animal under Section 4 of the Animal Welfare Act 2006. A “protected animal” is one that is commonly domesticated in the British Isles and, interestingly, includes stray dogs and feral cats! Under the Animal Welfare Act 2006, the maximum penalty for neglect or cruelty to animals is up to fifty-one weeks imprisonment, and/or a fine not exceeding £20,000.

Many people’s instinct, if the dog is in immediate need of care, will be to break into the car to free the dog. If you decide to do this, please be aware that, without proper justification, this could

be classed as criminal damage. Make sure you tell the police what you intend to do and take images/footage of the dog, and the names and numbers of witnesses to the incident. The law states that you have a lawful excuse to commit damage, if you believe that the owner of the property that you damage would consent to the damage if they knew the circumstances (section 5(2)(a) Criminal Damage Act 1971).

dId YOU KNOW that Article 2 of the Control of Dogs Order 1992 requires every dog, unless expressly exempted, to wear a collar whilst on a highway or in a public place, with the name and address of the owner inscribed on it? Those exemptions basically refer to working dogs.

FINALLY, from 6th April 2016, all dogs in England will have to be microchipped and be registered on one of the commercial databases. Dog owners will also have to keep their details up to date on the databases, and need to register the details of new owners before handing them over.

Bourne Preservation Societyby Anthony Jennings (Part 2)Bourne Preservation Society is all about raising the profile of the wonderful assets of our town, for the benefit of everyone who lives or works here, and visitors to Bourne. I said in my last article that I would tell you about our plans for the Old Grammar School, one of Bourne’s good buildings at risk. It is one of only a handful of buildings in Bourne with early 17th century origins. William Trollope, the grandson of Thomas Trollope, whose family acquired the Manor of Bourne Abbots after the Reformation, died in 1636. His will provided for an endowment for the living of a schoolmaster in a school built by himself. The building itself, in the churchyard of the Abbey Church, shows interesting evidence of construction material both earlier and later than that. The stone plinth course was probably salvaged from the demolished parts of the abbey, so it may have already been built right back at the time of Robert Manning. Manning, or Robert de Brunne, was born around 1275, a Gilbertine monk and academic who may have been at the abbey. He is important for his work on the English language, at a time when Latin and Anglo-Norman were still dominant.

Our proposal is to make the Old Grammar School the centre of an educational and heritage trail that would include Baldock’s Mill, the Abbey Church, perhaps also the Red Hall and the remains of Bourne Castle, which are all in close proximity. Schools could visit for a Victorian classroom experience, and the ‘Heritage

Experience’ would encourage visitors to Bourne, putting it on the heritage map.

Then there is Wake House. Charles Worth was an interesting chap. He was apprenticed to a printer in the town centre, but his true interests soon took him to Swan & Edgar in London. Then he went to Paris for a career that made him famous worldwide for his fashion designs. Later, his design house also went into the perfumery business. He was made a member of the Legion d’Honneur, and his funeral was attended by none other than the French President himself. His father, William Worth, was the solicitor who bought or, (according to J.D.Birkbeck’s “History of Bourne”), built Wake House.

Bourne Preservation Society would like to see the building reinstated to its original form by separating it from the adjacent

building, and then restored, financed by the proceeds from the sale of that smaller wing, a former pub, The Windmill. As “Worth House”, it could be a big draw for tourists.

And what about the Town Hall? There has been much speculation about its fate since council services were moved out, with visions of it being turned into a restaurant, bar or something equally unsuitable. Next time, I will tell you the story so far.

Summer HOLIDAYS. . . Are FOr DOGS TOO!

My family and I have just returned from a lovely week’s holiday in Cornwall. When we booked the holiday, we had swimming and beaches and interesting walks in mind, but what made the holiday really enjoyable was taking four of our nine dogs with us.

The cottage that we booked allowed us to take two dogs, which we negotiated up to three, as they were all small! The week before we went, I managed to make that four. It is always difficult for owners of holiday accommodation. They know that most dogs that come on holiday with their owners cause no problems, but there are always the exceptions. Alan, the owner of the cottage we stayed in, told me of a Labrador puppy that was left “home alone”, who then dug up and chewed a large section of the lounge carpet. There weren’t many rules for us, but we did have trouble with the “no dogs on the furniture” rule, as our dogs generally tend to crawl all over! We did our best, though, and took our own hoover with us, to leave the place very clean and tidy.

It was wonderful to have so many of our dogs with us, and what was very striking was the welcome given to them in Cornwall. We were able to take our dogs to every place where we had a meal or drink. They loved laying under the table, receiving frequent bits of meat and vegetables, and also liked a bit of cream tea and marshmallows from our hot chocolates! Most beaches allowed, or had a provision for, dogs and there were hundreds of fantastic walks.

There were dogs everywhere and every type and size (although there were a large proportion of poodle-cross dogs, including our own). There we so many people enjoying their holidays with their dogs, and we spent a lot of time talking to other dog owners. We saw one couple with a little terrier who purchased three ice creams, one for each other and one for the dog, which he obviously enjoyed. We saw an owner of two Labradors swimming together in St. Isaac harbour, a great way to cool off on a hot day. It was here we stood and watched a scene from TV’s “Doc Martin” being filmed, while keeping a close eye on Gem, our young border collie-cross-poodle, to make sure he didn’t bark and ruin the take!

Phew it’s a Scorcher! BIG TOM is loving this sunshine! The temperature gauge in my driving school car was reading 36.5º the other day! WOW! With the air con. inside the car, you wouldn’t even know it, but outside, everyone is melting! I’m not complaining though…. I love the sun!

The summer holiday period is always a very busy time for driving lessons, with school pupils making the most of the time they now have available in August. BIG TOM has already been asked to return to Bourne Grammar School in the new academic year for another talk on road safety, which will be a pleasure. I am also pleased to say my driving school continues to grow in popularity all year round, both within and further afield from Bourne. We are looking to bring other Instructors into the BIG TOM Driving School and would very much welcome contact from anyone interested - ([email protected]).

On a different theme, the many roadworks we have had in Bourne are certainly testing the patience of motorists, cyclists and pedestrians. Strangely enough, the temporary closure of Abbey Road actually eased the congestion on the crossroads

due to one phase of traffic lights being removed. But we should spare a thought for our valued shop keepers who provide us with great products and services, and do rely on the continued support of Bourne residents, even if the road outside their shop has been closed!

The beautiful flowers that have been placed around our town continue to flourish, which is lovely to see. As I get driven round on my driving lessons, it is noticeable that we are very fortunate to have a town that has so many attractive features – and the pride that Bourne people have in their town is plain to see.

| Clubs

this year, Bourne Wheelers Cycling Club celebrates its eightieth anniversary and continues to go from strength to strength. With a committed group of around one hundred members, of all ages and from the local area, the club caters for riders of all abilities, and is particularly proud and well-known for developing younger riders who go on to compete at a high level.

Rides

The club-runs are friendly social rides, typically covering around forty to seventy miles, (often with a cafe stop) and members will quickly help new riders identify the best ride for them. Other, more racing-focused, rides take place throughout the week.

Each year, the club organises a Sportive event, ‘The Bourne Ultimatum’ that takes place in September. This popular event starts and finishes in Edenham, and caters for all abilities of rider, with routes covering fifty eighty and one hundred miles. Full details can be found on the club website.

Youth

Bourne Wheelers is a Club Mark accredited club, and is part of British Cycling’s Go-Ride scheme. Young riders, aged from four to sixteen years, can join the ‘Bourne Bullets’ on Monday nights at Recreation Road (6-7pm) to learn basic bike-handling skills and prepare for racing.

The club has a proud record of supporting talented young cyclists – local professional rider Alistair Slater and Maddie Gammons (Current Youth National Trophy Champion) have both come through the club’s Go-Ride scheme, along with a number of other very talented riders who compete successfully at national level.

Racing

The club has a busy racing schedule, all year round. Members compete in time trials, road races and circuit races, from March to September, and Cyclocross from September to April.

The club runs a popular Wednesday night time-trial league from April to September, which is open to riders of all abilities. This year has also

seen the introduction of a ladies-only time trial series once a month, on

Tuesday nights.

There are always club members looking to get out for a few miles, but the main club rides are;

• Friday nights – departing at 5.30pm

• Saturday mornings – departing at 9am

• Sunday mornings – departing at 9am

“Bourne to dance”, “Bourne 2 Clean”, “Bourne to Paint” – all well-established local businesses who have cleverly punned their way onto the scene with their catchy name. This month’s featured phrase to include some reference to Bourne (or “born”) is “Born with a silver spoon in one’s mouth.”

A phrase which has been in common usage for over two hundred years, this metaphor means that an individual has been born into a wealthy family. It is commonly thought to be an English phrase and to refer to the British aristocracy. That may well be the case, but the earliest citation in print is from the USA.

“It was a common proverb that few lawyers were born with silver spoons in their mouths.”

Mediaeval spoons were usually made of wood. Spoon was also the name of a chip or splinter of wood and it is likely that is how the table utensils

derived their name. It has been a tradition in many countries for wealthy godparents to give a silver spoon to their godchildren at Christening ceremonies. That may be the source of the phrase, or it may simply be derived from the fact that wealthy people ate from silver utensils, while others didn’t.

In the keynote speech to the US Democratic National Convention in 1988, the Texas State Treasurer, Ann Richards, modified the phrase at the expense of the well-born and wealthy George Bush:

“Poor George, he can’t help it - he was born with a silver foot in his mouth.”
