elcome to your September edition and, as the heatwave of a few weeks ago soon becomes a wonderful, yet distant memory, we’re now back into the “exam results” and “back to school” routines for many. Time to take a deep breath, look ahead and wonder why Christmas presents should already be on show in the shops! Birth Partners Doula Or Don’t Ya?

Think about it this way: Would travelling to a faraway land seem less daunting if you had the support of a guide who’d been there before? Would stepping into the unknown feel more comfortable if you had someone’s hand to hold? Would running a race be easier going if you had someone to cheer you on? Would listening to a foreign language be more informative if it was interpreted by a translator?What Does a Doula Do?By hiring a doula to support your labour and birth, you are hiring a guide, a comforter, a coach and cheerleader and often a translator. In many instances, there’s a lot more involved – mas-sage, meditation and suggestions for positions to labour in, to name but a few. Just by being with you and offering a reassur-ing presence, from the onset of labour until you are settled with your new arrival, can go a long way to allaying many of the concerns that women have: “I don’t know who the midwife on duty will be”, “How will my partner drive me to the

birth centre/hospital while I’m having contractions in the back seat?”, “What if I panic?”, What if he panics?”, “I don’t want to be afraid…?” Of course, in an ideal world and in many traditional societies across the world (and historically in our own), it would be the role of the experienced women of the community to attend to you during your labour and birth; among them would have been your grandmother, mother, aunts and sisters. However, for many reasons, that’s rarely the case today. For many couples, the decision to hire a doula comes from the desire to create a more nurturing and natural environment for their birth. Research shows us that having a doula present at birth:

• Shortens first-time labour by an average of 2 hours• Decreases the chance of caesarean section by 50%• Decreases the need for pain medication• Decreases the chance of an assited birth• Helps fathers participate with confidence• Increases success in breastfeeding

So, why would you add a virtual stranger to the mix as your doula? If you’re still not sure, you might re-phrase the question to this: If you had the opportunity to handpick someone to be with you, throughout your labour, someone who would be there as support for you and your partner, from the first contraction through to after the baby is born, would you?

How does massage help?The therapist can use various techniques to break down a knot, starting with gentle strokes to warm the area before applying more pressure to the affected section of the muscle. The massage releases the bond between the strands, allowing full use of the muscle. This can be uncomfortable but the therapist can work to a level which the client finds acceptable. It is often described as a pleasure pain, as you can feel the benefits whilst the treatment is being carried out. In some cases more than one treatment might be required to fully break down the knot, but normally a client will feel a great improvement from the first massage.

What is a Knot? Muscles are formed from bunches of fibres which contract individually, sliding over each other, side by side. A knot is formed when the fibres stick to each other forming a hard lump in the muscle. This is caused by overworking the muscle or stress-related tension, such as we get in the shoulders and neck. If you imagine your muscle fibres as a plate of freshly cooked spaghetti in rows, lightly drizzled with oil, where the strands all freely glide over each other. A knot is like yesterday’s spaghetti, left in the fridge, where the strands bond to each other. These knots restrict movement, causing discomfort and a loss of mobility and in some cases, if left untreated, can calcify, requiring surgery to remove the bony growth.

tress and anxiety are feelings of being under too much mental or emotional pressure. People have different ways of reacting to stress, so a situation that feels stressful for one person may be motivating for someone else. Many of life’s demands can cause stress, particularly work, relationships, and money problems, a death of a family member or just not being able to cope with life’s demands. It can be defined as anything that makes you feel tense, angry, frustrated or unhappy and when you feel stressed, it can get in the way of sorting out these demands or can even affect everything we do. In this article, we look at some of the different problems which can be brought on by stress, anxiety or depression.• Digestive problems and irritable bowel syndrome (IBS)Tummy trouble, such as nausea and stomach ache with no medical cause, can often be stress-related. In particular, IBS or irritable bowel syndrome – a cluster of symptoms including bloating, cramps, diarrhoea and constipation –

is thought to be partly stress-related and the anxiety caused by needing to rush to the toilet can make the problem worse. • Self-medication – involving cigarettes, alcohol, food and drugs.Many of us cope with stress by reaching for cigarettes, alcohol, food or even drugs. Of course, a glass of wine can help us relax, and a bar of chocolate can cheer us up, but “self-medicating” excessively by consuming any of these things in excess can lead to health problems that in turn create even more stress. • Insomnia and sleep problems - One of the most common effects of stress is the difficulty when “switching off”, resulting in not being able to get off or back to sleep, and/or waking too early in the morning. Ankle sprains are very common injuries. There’s a good chance that while playing as a child or stepping on an uneven surface as an adult you sprained your ankle--some 25,000 people do it every day. Sometimes, it is an awkward moment when you lose your balance, but the pain quickly fades away and you go on your way. But the sprain could be more severe; your ankle might swell and become black and blue with bruising. It might hurt too much to stand on it. If it’s a severe sprain, you might have felt a “pop” when the injury happened. A sprained ankle means one or more ligaments on the outer side of your ankle were stretched or torn. If a sprain is not treated properly, you could have long-term problems. Typically the ankle is rolled either inward (inversion sprain) or outward (eversion sprain). Inversion sprains cause pain along the outer side of the ankle and are the most common type. Pain along the inner side of the ankle may represent a more serious injury to the tendons or to the ligaments that support the arch and should always be evaluated by a doctor. You’re most likely to sprain your ankle when you have your toes on the ground and heel up (plantar flexion). This position puts your ankle’s ligaments under tension, making them vulnerable. A sudden force like landing on an uneven surface may turn your ankle inward (inversion). When this happens, one, two or three of your ligaments may be hurt. A sprain can be difficult to differentiate from a fracture (broken bone) without an x-ray. If you are unable to bear weight after this type of injury, or if there is significant swelling or deformity, you should seek medical treatment.

Treating your Sprained AnkleTreating your sprained ankle properly may prevent chronic pain and instability. For most sprains follow the R.I.C.E. guidelines:Rest your ankle by not walking on it. Limit weight bearing. Use crutches if necessary; if there is no fracture you are safe to put some weight on the leg. An ankle brace often helps control swelling and adds stability while the ligaments are healing.

Dear readers, If you haven’t heard of the ‘Courier Fraud’ yet, please read this and share the advice with others. Courier frauds are becoming more prevalent and sophisticated. Usually the elderly are targeted. Scammers will telephone a potential victim purporting to be from their bank, from the police or other law enforcement authority. They then dupe the person into revealing their PIN and handing over their debit or credit card.What you should know• A scammer rings you, claiming to be from your Bank or the Police, saying a fraudulent payment has been spotted on your card and this needs resolving, or that someone has been arrested using your details and cards.• You may be asked to ring back using the phone number on the back of your card. This further convinces you that the call is genuine. However, the scammer keeps the line open at their end so, when you make the call, you are unknowingly connected straight back to them or their friends.• They will ask you for your PIN number or sometimes ask you to key it into your phone’s handset. YOU SHOULD NEVER GIVE YOUR PIN TO ANYONE IN ANY WAY.• The scammer then sends a courier or taxi to pick up your card from your home. It is possible the driver does not know they are being used as part of the scam.• Once they have your card and PIN the scammer can then spend your money.• There are many variations on this scam, one of which is where the scammer requests you to assist in a police investigation by asking you to go to your bank, withdraw a large sum of cash and take this home, where it will be collected by a courier or taxi driver.Prevention AdviceIf you receive a call like this, hang up the phone. In order to clear your line from the scammer, wait at least 5 minutes before making any calls. DO NOT hand over any money as a result of this type of phone call.Please be aware of the following• Your bank or the police will NEVER ring you and tell you that they are coming to your home to pick up your card, so never hand it over to anyone who comes to collect it.• Your bank will NEVER ask you to authorise anything by entering your PIN into the telephone.• NEVER share your PIN with anyone – the only time you should use your PIN is at a cash machine or when you use a chip and PIN machine.If you think you have been a victim of this scam, please telephone the police on 101.

Bourne Choral Society

Bourne Choral Society has enjoyed a summer break after a busy season, having performed an Advent concert in December and a Passiontide concert in April, both in Bourne Abbey Church. During the summer, the choir also entertained residents at The Croft and Browning Court with a variety of light hearted, ‘sing along’ selections of music. Rehearsals start again on Monday, September 16th at 7.30 pm in Bourne Abbey Church. Bourne Choral Society is a friendly group, made up of members with a wide range of musical ability and experience and with an enthusiasm for singing all types of music. New members are always welcome, so if you wish to meet us, just come along to one of our Monday rehearsals, where you will be very welcome. Our next concert will take place on December 6th in Bourne Abbey Church, when the programme will be: Cantique de Jean Racine’ - Gabriel Fauré; ‘Christmas Day’ – Gustav Holst; ‘Fantasia on Christmas Carols’ - Vaughan Williams; The opening ‘Gloria’ from Vivaldi’s ‘Gloria’… and Christmas Carols for audience participation. The “Stripped Down Theatre Company” is a Birmingham based group who are performing ‘Our Kylie’ at The Old Joint Stock Theatre in Birmingham City Centre in early

September. Containing adult humour, ‘Our Kylie’ is a show not to be missed and will be performed on September 13th, with doors opening at 7.30pm. The Remarkable, Long-Living Rolt BrothersSeptember 1st will see Bourne resident John Rolt (aka “John Fred” and “Jack”) reach his 99th birthday. What will make it very special, however, is that his three brothers who will hopefully be celebrating it with him, are themselves well into their nineties! John and his late wife Violet (nee Tabor) had three children and has now eight grandchildren, fourteen great-grandchildren and four great, great-grandchildren. After war service with the Sherwood Foresters, John drove the first double-decker bus for Delaine-Smiths and was the only joint driver/conductor on the Morton route, late on a Saturday. Twins, Claude and George Rolt will be 94 in September. Both joined the Royal Army Service and remember driving lorries through France without headlamps or road signs and suffering nothing more than mumps! Claude lost his wife Amelia (nee Buswell) last year and had worked for Stubleys as a painter and decorator, before going into business with Graham Luesby until his retirement. Like his three brothers, Claude has long played bowls and is a life-long member at Bourne Town B.C.

George lives alone in Pointon, since his wife, Marjorie (nee Sandall) died in 2000. His working life saw him staying in the village, driving lorries for Bates Transport, gardening for Colonel Shaw at The Grange and finally retiring from Richardsons at the age of 80!A fourth brother, Charles Eric, lives in Grantham and he too has turned 90. Longevity is certainly a feature of the remarkable Rolts, older brother James having lived till he was 96 and sister Dolly, 94 years of age. Claude’s recipe for his advanced years and continued good health, both in mind and body? you might well ask. “Cod-liver-oil and sex”, he once chuckled!

“Bourne2Play” was formed earlier this year to promote awareness and raise money to improve the Wellhead Play Park. “Bourne2Play” had a very successful day at “Picnic in the Park” at the Wellhead field, which was held on National Play Day. This special day, across the UK, highlights the importance of play in children’s lives. In total, we raised £557.29, thanks to all the support we received from the community. The event was a huge success, largely due to “Bourne Fun” donating a very large bouncy castle with obstacles and a slide which the children loved, and “Groovy Disco Parties” who sent Batman and the Juggling Jester to join in with the fun - we even got Batman looming! We want to say a massive thank-you to everyone who came and supported the event and we couldn’t have done it without you! Beyonce Will Have to Wait!

Rising dance star, Lauren Willis, aged 16 from Bourne, continues her impressive journey to the top of her profession. Having recently left Bourne Academy, Lauren will very soon be embarking on a Dance Diploma Course at Brooksby Melton College in Melton Mowbray. This will provide the necessary credentials to open a wide range of professional doors for her. Meanwhile, the uber-talented Miss Willis continues to perform in public, witness the recent Bourne Carnival, and to provide a range of teaching classes, so that her enthusiasm and undoubted

ability will encourage the youngsters of the town to perhaps follow in her footsteps. Commencing on September 6th, at the Renu Centre on Abbey Road, Bourne, she will be teaching three age categories, (3 to 7s, 8 to 12s and a 12+ group). Lauren is extremely encouraged by the fantastic support she has received, over the last three years of teaching, from contented parents and young dancers alike. She has been able to combine her individual successes, (with “street” and “commercial dance” routines) with teaching others just how to step out. The quiet and rather unassuming teenager, (outside of the studio!) is most grateful for the support and fantastic opportunities which the Bourne Academy have provided for her, and also Claire Saunders at Renu, whose belief in Lauren’s potential and unwavering help has made at least some of Lauren’s dreams come true so far. As for her long-term ambition, that of dancing with Beyonce, Lauren will just have to wait a little while longer!

September 15th marks the anniversary of the moving to new premises of the highly successful and respected Renu Beauty Salon and Fitness Centre. Having acquired the former Marquis of Granby in 2011, owner Claire Saunders and her dedicated team of 7 employees, (ably assisted by many friends and family members) transferred the whole operation from West Street, where a solid reputation and client base had been established. Larger premises have enabled a much wider range of treatments, facilities and classes to be offered, and the fortunes of the Renu team have prospered enormously. The team is now 14 strong, gym membership has trebled within a year, and the “ladies-only gym” has been the most notable success story. Lauren Willis’s dance classes are, of course, amongst those on offer at Renu, but there is a vast number of courses to suit all interests, shapes and sizes! These range from Pilates, Yoga, Boxercise, Belly Dancing, Indoor Cycling, Zumba and “Ballet fit”, through “Legs, bums and tums” to a “Fat- burner Workshop”, soon to be introduced. No doubt, Renu have certainly renewed the Bourne public’s interest in looking fabulous and feeling fit! (“Sorry”… Ed.) Happy Anniversary to Claire and her team!

Bourne Dimension Skatepark

Do you support the need for a skatepark? Perhaps you have to use car parks as a skatepark or travel miles to find a proper skatepark? Or you may feel that younger people need more facilities in Bourne to keep them occupied in their free time? Since Bourne United Charities offered an area of the Abbey Lawn to the east of the football ground as a possible site for a skatepark, a small group of people including representatives from the Police and the Town Council, have been trying to progress with the building of a skatepark on the site. Plans for a skatepark in the past have always been thwarted by the lack of a site. This, however, is an opportunity to provide a fantastic facility for the young people of Bourne, but progress has been slow because of the small number of volunteers working on the project. So far, a design for the skatepark has been developed based on the ideas from young people in Bourne, and will have features for a range of multi-wheeled users. We have also received pre-planning advice from South Kesteven District Council, which was generally positive but has identified a couple of issues that must be addressed if the skatepark is to be built. The next steps are to talk to local residents about the proposed skatepark, select a specialist skatepark builder to build the skatepark, and submit our plans for full planning permission and hopefully secure the Town Council’s help in connection with a lease. Once we have planning permission, we will then seek the estimated £150,000 needed to build the skatepark. The aim would be to start the building of the skatepark in the summer of 2015. There is a huge amount needing to be done and, without more volunteers, the project will fail. We are looking for people who can help with getting planning permission, contract management, project management, fund raising, publicity, website development, etc. etc. So there will be a job for you. Many of those young people have moved on and we need to be able to demonstrate that this enthusiasm still exists.

Festive season and the joys of Christmas Breaks

They provide us with a multitude of opportunities to experience holidays to some of the world’s most inspiring destinations. From the beaches of the Caribbean and the Indian Ocean to the Christmas markets and ski slopes of Europe - I offer seasonal experiences guaranteed to inspire and excite! Christmas Markets of Europe

One of Europe’s most popular and atmospheric markets is located near Wenceslas Square (as in “Old King Wenceslas”) in Prague Old Town. In December, the city becomes a winter wonderland and the Czech food and drink that can be sampled at the markets are a “must”. As an alternative, why not visit the Spanish coastal city of Barcelona? Not immediately renowned for its Christmas markets, it does however play host to the Fira de Santa Llúcia Christmas market which has been held around Barcelona Cathedral since 1786.

Caribbean Beaches

The Caribbean area has some of the world’s most luxurious and idyllic holiday destinations, and their uninterrupted, white sandy beaches make them such firm favourites for Christmas holidays abroad. Three of the most popular islands, with some of the best beaches, are Barbados, Antigua and St Lucia and all can be reached by direct flights from the UK. The beaches of Barbados are some of the best in the Caribbean and are suitably varied to appeal to those looking for adventure, as well as rest and relaxation. countdown to midnight. Every year, the eyes of the world focus in anticipation and wonder at the scenes conjured at the New York landmark, and to be a part of the crowds would represent a memorable experience for even the most well-travelled.

Northern Lights

Otherwise known as Aurora Borealis, this is one holiday experience not to be missed, as it’s one of the natural wonders of the world - a mysterious, multi-coloured show in which the night sky is suddenly lit up with a wondrous glow. Fly to Iceland during the festive season to experience the Northern Lights during its optimum period from late September to early April. Between 9pm and 2am is recognized as the best time to view this breathtaking spectacle, so just imagine dining and watching one of the most awe-inspiring views on earth! There are many thrills to be had in Iceland, including dramatic, sparkling white landscapes and romantic hotels and restaurants, plus many family activities.

“Sergeant Mosley’s Musings”It seems like only yesterday I was scratching my head thinking of topics to write about for last month’s magazine. However, some of you have come to my aid, as I have had several

requests regarding topics to discuss in this column. Unfortunately, I can’t respond to them all in this edition, but I will do so as soon as I can. One topic that is causing concern at this time of year is that of dogs.

Hot Dogs! That title may be slightly flippant, but this is a subject which frustrates me greatly. Why do people continue to leave dogs in cars on warm days? It doesn’t have to be a particularly warm day for it to get hot inside a car. Dogs pant to keep cool. In hot stuffy cars, dogs can’t cool down and leaving a window open or a sunshield on a windscreen won’t keep your car cool enough. I make no apology for saying that I, and indeed any police officer, will not hesitate to force entry to a vehicle to get a dog out that may be suffering due to the heat. You may also be prosecuted for causing unnecessary suffering to an animal under the Animal Welfare Act 2006. Please do not leave your dog in a vehicle, even for a short time. It’s as simple as that!

Worrying Livestock can involve a dog, or dogs, attacking or chasing livestock. A dog can

even be regarded as worrying livestock simply by not being on a lead or otherwise kept under close control. A farmer has a legal right in law to shoot a dog which is worrying livestock and, although this is a last resort, it does happen. If a dog is worrying livestock on agricultural land, the owner (and the person in charge of the dog if not the owner) is guilty of an offence under section 1 of the Dogs (Protection of Livestock) Act 1953. Livestock is defined under the act as “cattle, sheep, goats, swine, horses and poultry”. Following that, under the Dogs Act 1906, a dog that has been shown to have worried livestock can be treated as a dangerous dog for the purposes of section 2 of the Dogs Act 1871, which means that a Magistrates’ Court could order that the dog to be destroyed.

Dangerous Dogs. Under Section 3 of the Dangerous Dogs Act 1991, it is an offence to allow any dog to be “dangerously out of control” in any place (public or private) if it gives grounds for reasonable apprehension that the dog will injure any person. If the dog injures an “assistance dog”, the offence is aggravated which basically means it is considered more serious. The dog does not actually have to injure someone for the offence to occur. Again, the owner and the person in charge of the dog are liable for this offence. Powers under section 2 of the Dogs Act 1871 are also available, meaning that the dog can be either neutered or destroyed by order of the Court.

Did you know that article 2 of the Control of Dogs Order 1992 requires every dog, unless expressly exempted, to wear a collar while on a highway or in a public place with the name and address of the owner inscribed on it? Those exemptions basically refer to working dogs.

Finally : From 6th April 2016, all dogs in England will have to be micro-chipped and be registered on one of the commercial databases. Dog owners will also have to keep their details up to date on the databases and will need to register the details of new owners before handing them over.

Well, firstly, the chain of office, the symbol of the position, links the present Mayor historically with all those who have held the position in the past. In my case, I am Bourne’s number forty-seven! Secondly, and probably most importantly, the Mayor is also the Chairman of the Council, running the full council meetings. Then there is what could be described as the ceremonial side of the position, representing the town at civic and social functions, both in Bourne and more widely, throughout the surrounding area. To give a few examples, I have been introduced to the Queen’s granddaughter, H.R.H. Princess Beatrice, during her recent visit to the Charles Read School in Corby Glen. I was delighted to be asked to open the Bourne Classic Car and Bike Show in early June, and to present the prizes at the end of a show which I

felt was a wonderful advertisement for Bourne, drawing people into the town from all over the East Midlands and further afield. I spoke to one gentleman who made sure his visit from New Zealand coincided with the show. Finally, attending the civic functions of other “chains” throughout Lincolnshire gives us opportunities to build contacts and discuss mutual problems. It is always worth finding out how others approach the problems with which we may also be dealing.

Well, that’s the job description - now to get on with the job…..!

Tallington FarmWhat there is to see and do :Tallington Farm is a working arable farm consisting of 200 hectares (approximately 500 acres) at Tallington in South Lincolnshire. The farm has been in the Thurlby family for four generations and produces wheat, barley and sugar beet plus sunflower seeds, asparagus and Christmas trees. Lincoln Red cattle, sheep and pigs can be seen, along with small pets, including rabbits, bantam chickens, a ferret and a Shetland pony. Neolithic and Bronze age pottery, plus evidence of flat and barrow graves, provides evidence of farmers earlier than the Thurlbys. There is hedging to encourage birdlife and insects, a natural spring pond which harbours carp as well as tadpoles and plants. Furthermore, an area of marsh ground has reed beds. Andy and Louise are very keen to promote farming, the environment and the countryside, in order to educate young children, making them aware of where their food comes from and how to respect the countryside. Farm activities can be tailored to the requirements of the school visiting the farm.Facilities include a picnic area, toilets, hard surface parking and paths and a wet-weather shelter.

Conservation on the farmTallington Farm is part of the “Higher Level Entry Scheme” and is also in the “Countryside Stewardship Scheme”. As part of this commitment to the larger environmental impact, wild bird seed (kale, quinoa, wild radish, millet and maize) crops are planted for the wild birds and insects and these also acts as pheasant cover. Hedging provides homes for birdlife and insects whilst ponds encourage tadpoles and newts.

Salvation Army Ministers, Kevin and Wendy Brown have recently moved to Bourne and are already very impressed with the friendliness of the people and the welcome they have received. Leaving their Cumbrian roots five years ago to establish their first ministry in Waterbeach, six miles outside Cambridge, they have now made the move to a larger church, (called a “corps”) and are now relishing the challenges which lie ahead of them. They have already built up a good rapport with resident youth worker, Vicky Elsom, and together they intend to make the youth aspect of the Salvation Army much more prominent. Details of youth clubs will be included in forthcoming editions of “Discovering Bourne”. Kevin and Wendy have been married for 31 years and have two married daughters, both of whom have remained amongst the hills of the north! Since arriving in the town, Wendy has been very keen to get involved in community events within Bourne, and was soon making a contribution to the recent, highly successful Bourne Carnival on June 29th, as a Carnival Committee member. She sees their principal target as becoming key members of a flourishing and active community in our rapidly growing town – a growth very similar to that which they were to experience in their time at Waterbeach. Although, understandably, still missing the magnificent Lake District fells five years on, Wendy is still very upbeat about being on the edge of the Fens. “Living here is warmer”, she says, “and we just love those beautiful big sunsets!” Welcome to Bourne.

Elsea Park Community Trust are very proud to have commissioned an automatic external defibrillator (AED) at The Centre at Elsea Park.

surprised to find that none of the existing Public Access Defibrillators in Bourne are available all the time, as most of them are in buildings that are closed outside normal business hours! The Trust approached Lincolnshire Integrated Voluntary Emergency Service (LIVES) who advised them to install the AED on an external wall in a special secure cabinet. GIDA Construction (who are building the new school) heard of the project, and their electricians installed and commissioned the equipment free of charge, for which everyone involved in the project are extremely grateful. LIVES will be supporting The Trust, and will train a group of residents in the use of the defibrillator, though the equipment is designed to be used by anyone (even if they have not been trained). In the event of a 999 call, a caller is told the location of the nearest AED by the Emergency Services along with the cabinet access code. The defibrillator does the rest, giving the user intelligent voice commands and determines whether or not it needs to administer an electric shock. The Trust hope that it will never be needed, but any potential life saver can rest assured that now there is NO possibility of them ever making the situation worse, when it comes to the emergency administration of crucial First Aid.

Camp Ecuador 2015 – Sponsor My T-ShirtHello, my name is Phoebe Kirtland. I am just starting year 11 at Bourne Academy. In the summer of 2015 I will be travelling to Ecuador with Camps International. Over the course of 4 weeks I will be helping local communities with building and refurbishment projects and helping people (especially women) to set up businesses within the local area. I will also be helping with the preservation and conservation of the environment and its wildlife ensuring that people’s bad habits, such as littering, does not endanger wild animals, like spectacled bears, by replanting indigenous woodlands. I aim to fundraise the entire cost of the trip which is £4,480. So far I have fundraised £1,271 through sponsored events, raffles, table top and refreshment sales. I would like to take the opportunity in this Discovering Bourne publication to ask if any businesses, small or large, would like to sponsor

my t-shirt at a cost of £25 for a logo or wording that will then be printed by Smart Tec Embroidery Ltd of Bourne. I will wear the t-shirt at all my remaining fundraising events as well as in Ecuador itself and on my return when doing any presentations about my trip. Stripes can make a big statement or add a subtle design element to your decor

eometry is extremely useful in interiors and can transform a space. From the softness of flowing curves to the solidity of a cube, to the excitement of a zigzag and the charm of spots and circles you can change the feel of a room based on the geometric patterns you employ. Today I’m going to concentrate on stripes for their ability to both make a big statement and add a subtle design element to your decor. If you want to make a room feel wider, take the stripe horizontally around the room and if you want to make it feel taller, take it vertically up the walls. In this bedroom (1) the wide stripes create a soothing atmosphere. The clever mix of neutral tones and the use of different types of paint make an interesting and stylish combination. I really like the addition of a metallic paint to add a hint of glamour. Horizontal stripes can be very calming. The main thing to remember with stripes is that they lead the eye. You cannot help but follow a line whether it’s up the wall or along the floor. A really bold line, or a long line, will make your eye travel even quicker. In this hallway (2) you can see the effect of directional stripes. I’m sure your eyes immediately followed the rug to see straight through the doorway into the next room, which is a clever trick if you want to take the attention away from something less pretty! And if you have an awkward shaped room to deal with you can use stripes to balance it, to make it even more edgy and exciting as in this image (3)

which plays on graphic black and white. The high contrast stripes are bold, confident and modern and if that’s a fair description of your personality I hope you try out something like this. Now you have these designer tools in your decorating bag let’s think about the beauty of stripes and how the colours and the width of the lines make a difference. Try varying the line widths and changing directions that demonstrate a creative spirit and bring a plain wall to life. You really don’t need many stripes to make a huge impact (4). Finally, in image (5) you can see how a striped wall brings a mix of colourful furniture together, binding the separate pieces into a cohesive scheme that feels comfortable and playful. Whether you start with the furniture and add the stripes or find a striped wallpaper you love and then look for the furniture is up to you but if you like colour I hope you will give this a whirl. PC Troubleshooting with the Reliability Monitor

We’re getting a little more ‘techie’ this month but hopefully not too deep to be useful to many. If you are having problems with programs/Windows crashing or generating errors then you may find Windows in-built Reliability tool of use. This tool will show what processes have caused errors and which have stopped or caused Windows failure. To use it type reliability in the search box or Windows 8 users should type reliability on their Start screen and then click on View reliability historyWindows will now read its logs and will compile a graphical report of reliability issues.Reliability is graded from 10 (most reliable) to 1 and symbols are added to show what event caused a problem in reliability.

In the example shown the system was having a problem where folders were taking longer to open than normal.

By examining the reliability history it was seen that the Windows Image Acquisition process was failing. This started after the installation of an old version of the Roxio program; which can be seen in an earlier blue info event. The fix for this problem was to upgrade Roxio to the current version.

Although in many cases this tool may not shed light on an ongoing problem, it may well save you time and money by pointing you towards an offending program or process.

I would think carefully before using your pension fund to pay off debts, it is designed to give you an income for the rest of your life. I strongly recommend that you seek independent financial advice before doing this. Below is a summary of what we already know and what we are still waiting to hear about. The rules should be clearer after the chancellor’s Autumn Statement The Treasury has published the decisions it has made as a result of its consultation on “Freedom and Choice in Pensions”. The changes will be overseen by the Treasury, largely through a new Pensions Tax Bill. The issues have been published in a consultation paper.The KnownsPersonal pension funds payable as a lump sum for over 55s: Tax-free cash will remain available - up to 25% of the fund value - the remainder will be subject to their marginal rate of income tax. Providers and trustees will not need to offer this to all their members but there will be a statutory override which will allow them do so without amending scheme rules.Transfers from private sector Defined Benefit Schemes to continue: Members of funded public sector defined benefit schemes will be allowed to transfer to a personal arrangement, however a ban on transfers from unfunded public sector schemes such as Local Government and Civil Service schemes will go ahead. Defined Benefit Scheme members who request a transfer will be required to take advice from an appropriately qualified Independent Financial Adviser unless the total value of their benefits is

below the triviality limit of £30,000.Increased flexibility for annuities: Tax rules to be amended allowing the development of new retirement products which can be tailored to the needs of individuals. |Event preview Gerry Burrows, on behalf of the SciFest Organising Committee

Workshops and presentations will be aimed at the different Key Stages throughout the local primary schools with subjects ranging from astronomy, chemistry, forces, light, sound and even some science ‘magic’. In the past it proved to be difficult to move large numbers of children to and from the Corn Exchange and then moving them around the building. In 2008 it was decided that instead of the children moving, the presenters would travel to the schools to give their shows. This had the added advantage of causing minimal disruption to the schools. It was also decided to hold two evening shows in the Corn Exchange to allow children to bring their families. This format proved to be so successful that over 4500 children experienced at least one event. Previous presenters of the evening events include Chris Packham from BBC’s Springwatch and Nick Baker from The Really Wild Show who held the children spellbound. SciFest 2014 is due to be held from 6th to 10th October when presenters will include ZooLab where the younger children will be introduced to a number of minibeasts and shown the difference in their behaviour. Mark from ‘Earthbound Misfits’ will demonstrate the effect of Forces while the younger children will examine scientific principles through the medium of dance with ‘Green Bean Dance’. Dave Shaw, one of

our original presenters will talk about natural history with a fascinating presentation ‘Ants in your Plants’. James Soper will present ‘Galileo’s Greatest Mistake’ which he promises will feature explosions and other spectacular effects. Space will also feature in an inflatable dome provided by Starlincs.. On the evening of Tuesday 7th October Greg Foot will be presenting ‘Everest – Going to Extremes’; which sounds dangerous. Greg pops up as the science expert on ‘Blue Peter’ and is also the resident science expert on Channel 4’s ‘Sunday Brunch’. On Thursday 9th James Soper will return with his ‘Real Science of the Circus. James is a professional circus performer and even appears in The Guiness Book of Records for some of his juggling feats None of this would be possible without our wonderful and supportive sponsors, the major ones being The Len Pick Trust, Bourne United Charities, Bourne Round Table, the Rotary Club of Bourne, Northrop Grumman and Bourne Town Council. All of the Bourne School governors support SciFest as do many organisations too numerous to mention. Without them the event simply would not happen. It is incredible to watch the children as they experience a close-up view of science and it is to be hoped that SciFest 2014 will inspire many young minds to study the subject further and perhaps make their career in the scientific world.

Event Returns to Bourne

Ever Popular

Bourne SciFest is returning for the 8th time. It is a week-long Science Festival for the young people of Bourne and district. Starting in 2000 when a small group of teachers and helpers decided to hold a Science Festival in the Corn Exchange it proved to be so successful that it has been held every two years providing over 3,500 children with first-rate experience of science.


he navvy was an itinerant labourer, a phenomenon of the 19th century when public works such as the construction of new railways needed human muscle to shift massive quantities of earth, often at the rate of twenty tons a day for each man on site. It was a rough and ready life that attracted men prepared to live together, often in encampments by the line, and they invariably had an ability to eat heartily, drink heavily and fight fiercely.

They were first employed digging out the canals or navigations, hence the name, but later moved to the railways, arriving in the Bourne area to help build the Bourne to Essendine link where work began in the autumn of 1857. Such a large concentration of workers renowned for their strong language, love of beer and immoral behaviour was regarded with some concern by local people and there were many attempts to keep them on the straight and narrow path of Victorian righteousness with the help of visiting preachers and missionary meetings.

The line was completed in 1860 when the navvies moved to other railway projects in the area and during the two years from 1891-93 that it took to build the last stretch through Little Bytham, Toft and Lound, earnings were as high as £1 a week or even 30s. if on piecework, far higher than could be obtained elsewhere and this attracted a motley collection of hardened

labourers from all parts of the British Isles where work was scarce.

The majority were well behaved and many sent money home to needy families but some spent all they earned on drink while petty crime such as stealing and poaching was common and on one occasion a navvy absconded with the money from their sick club. Fighting was also a way of life and regular bouts on Sundays became an accepted method of settling quarrels, often vicious contests that resulted in at least one death when two of them met in a bare-knuckle encounter in a field near the line, the one who struck the fatal blow being sent to jail for manslaughter.

When the work ran out the navvies moved on. Bourne was finally phased out of the railway system in 1964 leaving only a few isolated examples such as the 330-yard long Toft tunnel which had employed 400 of them as a reminder of their backbreaking labour.

|In the hot seat

JohnThis month sees a new feature, where a local resident will be asked a set of questions aimed at getting to know a little more about them and their opinions. First into the hot seat is our own editor, John Schwarz, who has now been three months at the helm. Married to Amanda and with a daughter and three sons, John has lived in and around Bourne for almost all of his life. Last summer, he retired from a long and happy teaching career, having taught English at Arthur Mellows Village College, Glinton and Deacon’s School, Peterborough, (latterly, The Thomas Deacon Academy.)

1. WHERE WERE YOU BORN, AND WHAT IS YOUR FONDEST MEMORY OF YOUR CHILDHOOD?I was born in Grantham, enabling me to claim true “Yellow Belly” status. My fondest memories are of accompanying my father, long-retired veterinary surgeon, Bob Schwarz, (now aged 95!) as we travelled the lanes of South Lincolnshire tending to all manner of farm animals and pets – James Herriot without the hills!2. WHO HAS HAD THE GREATEST INFLUENCE ON YOUR LIFE AND WHY?Teachers can mould a youngster’s life, be they warm and caring, despised and aloof or just plain honest and inspirational. I count myself lucky to have had my own teaching career sparked into being in the Sixties and early Seventies at Bourne County Primary, (now Bourne Abbey), and Bourne Grammar School. Mrs Audrey Scotney, Mr Ken Palmer and Mr “Danny” Lambert figure prominently in my memories. Later, major influences were to appear at B.G.S. in the form of Miss Lesley Dunn, Mr “Dougie” Birkbeck, the Sloweys and Mr Roger “Tich” Taylor. It was the bearded Welshman and English Literature teacher, Mr Roy Collins, however, who “put the match to the fire” that had been set by the others. I still hear his “sloeblack, slow, black, crowblack, fishingboatbobbing sea”, whenever I think of Dylan Thomas’s “Under Milk Wood”. Taking his whole English, “O” Level class out on cycles to a field near Edenham, one day, to look at cows and then give the vet’s son the task of teaching the class (and teacher) about the various breeds of cattle, was truly inspirational!3. WHICH TWO CHARACTERS, (ALIVE OR NOT), WOULD YOU MOST ENJOY

SHARING A MEAL WITH AND WHY?Michael Palin has remained not only a very funny man to me, from his “Monty Python” days, but his extraordinary range of travel adventures, which I have loved reading about, with increasing levels of jealousy on my part, would make a fascinating partner at the table. Add the unforgettable lunatic that was Spike Milligan to the mixture, with his depth of knowledge, remarkable experiences of life and surprisingly beautiful poetic skills, then I would feel humbled to be in their presence, to say nothing of being creased up with laughter throughout, especially if one of the guests were to start talking of eating his peas with honey!4. HOW WOULD YOU DESCRIBE YOURSELF IN JUST FIVE WORDS?Proud father, literature lover, optimist.5. IF THERE WAS ONE THING WHICH YOU COULD CHANGE ABOUT BOURNE, WHAT WOULD IT BE AND WHY?The provision of recreational facilities for the younger people in any community must surely be one of the key roles of the elders within that community – look after the well-being, skills acquisition and health of your young, because they can’t do it all for themselves. So, with two teenage sons, both skateboarding fanatics, who regularly need to be taxied to Stamford Skate Park and the fabulous Adrenaline Alley in Corby,Northants, my only serious plea would be for Bourne to have a skate park of our own, in this rapidly growing town of ours – and soon!6. WHAT ADVICE WOULD YOU GIVE TO A 16 YEAR OLD YOU?Take notice of every piece of advice coming your way but, in time, don’t be afraid to make your own decisions, which may not always be in line with what you first thought!

| Spotlight on clubs

Bourne Deeping Hockey ClubWith summer drawing to a close and the evenings pulling in, we start thinking of those stormy Saturdays and windy Wednesdays fast approaching – yes, the winter sporting season is coming soon and, this month, our spotlight turns to Bourne Deeping Hockey Club. No longer a feature of the Abbey Lawn scenery, (field hockey now having long become an “Astroturf sport”), Bourne and Market Deeping Hockey Clubs merged in 2011-12. Whilst the youngsters race across the artificial surfaces of the East Midlands and East Anglia, proud in their Bourne-Deeping colours these days, the Club is still proud to be able to accommodate the not-so-young likes of Stephen Knipe and Pete Moisey, now well into their late, very late thirties!!

The general mood at Bourne Deeping Hockey Club is incredibly positive at the moment. Pre-season is going well and, with a new crop of youngsters coming through into the senior ranks, there is a real buzz around the place. The Men’s 1st , 2nd and 3rd XIs all gained promotion in 2012-13 and, after a season of consolidation last year, are now looking to push on further up the leagues. After a league reshuffle, the Ladies’ 1st XI found themselves playing a much higher standard than the previous season, but raised their game against higher level opposition to stay in the league. Now, they will be looking for a top-end finish this year. With the club ever expanding (a 6th Men’s team will join the fray this season) and having recently formed a 3rd Ladies’ team, the future is looking bright for BDHC. This year (2014-15) will be their first year entering the England Hockey Cup Competitions, with Men’s, Ladies’ and Mixed teams looking to perform on the national stage. Likewise, the U18 Boys’, U16 Girls’, and U14 Boy’ teams will be looking to test themselves in hockey’s version of football’s FA Cup. The club is incredibly proud of its thriving junior section, with 60+ youngsters from 6-14 years old, regularly training on a Saturday morning. Providing opportunities for these youngsters to play senior hockey at an appropriate level for their development is a key priority for the club, and they have a dedicated Welfare Officer and Level 2 Coaching team who help make that transition from junior to senior hockey as smooth as possible. BDHC are most definitely a ‘community club’; since forming in 2011-12, they have hosted several Club Day events to raise money for good causes. In 2011, they ran a Sports Relief charity tournament, involving clubs from across the local area; in 2012, they completed the Golden Challenge (completing 2012 consecutive passes) to raise funds for the British Red Cross; and last year ran a Fancy Dress Hockey Day to raise

money for Children in Need. Alongside these club events, the club are always looking to support local events such as Race for Life and the Deepings Raft Race. Over the next five years, the club hopes to continue its primary aim of providing quality coaching and a development pathway for young hockey players in the local area; aiming to have a men’s and ladies’ team playing Premier level hockey.

Not every golfer slices the golf ball. Some golfers are plagued by the opposite shot, the shot that dives violently low and fast from around the body with hook spin (or just gets pushed straight out across the target line.) This occurs because the path of the club comes into impact from inside the target line and leaves the impact zone outside of the target line. (You are standing inside the target line.) This is a drill to use on the driving range. It can be used with any club and all you need is a plastic bottle of water. Having determined your target line, place the bottle of water six inches on the target side of the ball, and just outside of the target line. Now make your swing. If you put your normal swing on the shot, you will connect with the water bottle with your golf club, so in effect, this drill is going to make you change your swing path so that you miss the bottle. In this way, you will hopefully, stop hooking or pushing your golf shots.
