ay is such a busy month in Bourne. Our events diary is overflowing, with the biggest event of them all being held at the end of the month – the Bourne Festival, organised by the Round Table. A great weekend of events has been organised so do go along with the family and support this fantastic fundraising event.

I had the pleasure of meeting cancer survivor and charity fundraiser Jane Mulhern, who runs Bourne’s Cancer Support Group. She is organising a ball called Touched by Pink on June 28th at the Holiday Inn, Peterborough, in a bid to raise thousands of pounds to help cancer sufferers. Read her inspiring story inside.

In this issue we have a large home and garden section and an article about The Bathroom Store, a new bathroom showroom which opens this month. We also have some great articles from our regular contributors and of course, our ever popular quiz page.

In other exciting news we are proud to be supporting the Bourne Summer Carnival which will be held on Sunday, June 29th in Bourne town centre. It will be a fun-filled day with fairground rides, street entertainment and live music. There will also be a hog roast and continental market, a children’s fancy dress competition – and a visit from Peppa Pig!!

On a final note, this is my last issue, but the magazine will carry on under the very capable editorship of Claire Saberton. I have loved working on the magazine and with the people of Bourne and our great advertisers and contributors. I know the magazine will grow and continue to be successful and I wish Claire and the team all the best for the future.

The Information Commissioner’s Office (ICO) will now be able to take action against calls that are classed as ‘annoyance’ rather than ‘substantial distress’; this means far more calls will be covered. 2. Ofcom and the ICO will share information on rogue companies, leading to more fines. 3. The Ministry of Justice are currently consulting on whether PPI cold callers should face fines of up to 20% of their annual turnover. 4. The Government has asked Richard Lloyd, Executive Director of Which? (the consumer champion), to lead a task force reviewing how people consent to receiving marketing calls. ADVICETo avoid unsolicited telephone calls, members of the public are encouraged to remove their personal details from the public arena. The following will help:- Register free with the Telephone Preference Service (TPS) - Once registration is complete telemarketers are legally bound not to call you. Registration takes about a month to become effective and can be made online at www.tpsonline.org.uk or via telephone on 0845 070 0707. Electoral Registers - Each year, electoral registration forms are sent to all homes in the UK. There is a legal requirement to complete these forms, which list all of the people living at your address on 15 October. A new electoral register is published on 01 December each year. The electoral register is a list of the names and addresses of everyone who is eligible to vote. There are two versions of the electoral register:- A FULL REGISTER is used for elections, preventing and detecting crime, and checking applications for loan or credit agreements the EDITED REGISTER is available for general sale and can be used for any purpose. The EDITED REGISTER can be bought by any person, company or organisation and can be used for commercial activities such as marketing. ’s back.” The words reverberated around my head; a churning pain rolled around my stomach and the feeling of sickness lurched in my gut. No. Flashbacks from six months ago rushed to the front of my mind: the hours spent curled up in a hospital bed, that wretched medicinal liquid injected into my arm making me feel worse rather than helping me. My mother’s tear-streaked face stared at the wall, disbelief etched upon her aged face; my father pleaded with the doctor before us, begging for a retest, demanding that he had the wrong patient. But he didn’t, those were my results. I’ve known for weeks, something in the back of my brain recognised the symptoms but I didn’t want to believe it. Every fibre of my being hoped my mind was playing tricks on me. The thoughts swirling around in my head was too much to bear, I had to get out; away from the hospital, away from my parents, away from me. I pushed the chair over as I ran out of the door, across the hallway, down the stairs and through the welcoming doors. How long had it been since I saw my reflection? It had been half a year, maybe more? I remembered my Mum’s strict instructions not to look in the mirror; surely I couldn’t look that ill. I slowly turned towards the hospital windows. A girl stood there. I vaguely looked like her; the resemblance was definitely there, but she was not a girl I remembered. Her cheeks were sunken into her pale complexion, a straggle of dirty brown hair was flopped over her left shoulder and a fringe had been hastily clipped to the side of her head. The girl’s huge green eyes stared holes into my face. Her mouth turned

down into a grimace at what she saw, silent tears rolled down her wounded face. That was not me, surely. The girl I remembered was strong, healthy; her eyes never held such pain and her mouth never saw sadness. Is this what I’d become, a walking illness? I turned so the formidable hospital stood menacingly behind me while I bolted through the hedgerow next to the building. Trees scraped my bare legs as I ran to my safe haven, my paradise, my nirvana. The strong oak trees in the corner of the meadow gently brushed the swaying knee-high grass, bluebells were delicately placed in random spots throughout the vast meadow. Although it was close to the busy highway and town centre, nothing but silence could be heard. A loud rumble ripped through the peace, lightening flashed through the darkened skies as fear stirred within me. I had never been outside during a thunder storm and I was not particularly partial to being in one now. As I looked up to the sky, the heavens opened, as if God himself cried the same tears as I. The once-peaceful oak trees thrashed wildly in the wind, the grass shredded the soil without hesitation and the flowered bluebells were flung violently through the air. A scream erupted from my mouth as another crash of thunder clapped through the air; after everything I had been through, and I had to do it again? The anger and violence around me seemed to represent the thing that was currently trying to kill me, my own personal storm. I turned back towards the trees to go back to my parents. I guessed it was time to face the coming tempest.

|Recipe of the month

Rib Eye Steak with a Cheese CrustIngredients

2 Rib Eyes 10/12oz each; 4oz Cheese; 3oz Breadcrumbs; 1 tsp Olive Oil; 1 tbsp Chopped

Parsley; Salt & PepperMethod1 Season the steak and rub with oil.

2 Heat a large frying pan over a high heat and seal the steaks. Transfer to a shallow roasting tray.

3 To make the cheese crust, mix together the olive oil, breadcrumbs and parsley. Crumble the cheese over the steaks, then top with the breadrumb mixture.

4 Place the steaks in a preheated oven (200°C) for 10/12 minutes or until the cheese has melted and the breadcrumbs are golden brown.

Chips – Triple CookedIngredients

450g|1lb Potatoes; 1 Litre Vegetable OilMethod1 Cut the potatoes into chips. Soak them in cold water for 5 minutes, then drain and rinse.

2 Bring a pan of water to the boil, add the chips and then cook for 3-4 minutes until the chips begin to soften. Drain on kitchen paper and put on a baking tray and refrigerate for an hour.

3 Heat the oil up on a heavy based pan (180-190°C) or until a cube of bread browns in 30 seconds. Add the chips in batches to avoid overcrowding. Cook for 3-4 minutes until beginning to brown. Remove and drain on a plate which has been lined with kitchen paper.

4 Return oil to the heat and cook the chips again until golden and piping hot.

Café 35 has re-opened and owners Beth Smith, Nicola Owen, Maya Wilson, Louise Wilcockson, and Marina Hawkins say it’s better than ever. And what better way to start the day than with a Café 35 breakfast ranging from a full English breakfast to Eggs

Benedict or a Builder’s breakfast sandwich. The girls pride themselves on their home cooking, including home-made soups, cakes, pastries and pate. The menus change with the seasons and their produce is locally sourced, coming from local businesses such as Groovy Foods and the Pea Pod Pantry. Beth said: “We cater for dietary requirements such as Gluten Free, Dairy Free, vegetarian or vegan. We try and be as environmentally friendly as possible and use Fairtrade Coffee and Tea and free range eggs.”The café is open seven days a week and also caters for private functions. Bowled over by Barolo recently enjoyed a wonderful dinner at an Italian restaurant in London and for my main course, selected venison and mushroom stroganoff. It was quite sublime. Venison is a very lean meat and often has a slightly gamey flavour and because this dish involved a creamy sauce and mushrooms I needed a wine robust enough to cut through the sauce and rich enough to stand up to the strong flavour of the meat.

As is so often the case, wines from the same region as the food are a good starting point. Food and wines have evolved over hundreds of years together and it is rare for wines of a particular country to not be well matched to the local food.

I chose a Barolo wine from Italy. Barolo is the most powerful and dramatic expression of the Nebbiolo grape and takes its name from the village of the same name nine miles to the south of the town of Alba in the region of Piemonte in north west Italy.

Barolo is always a rich and heady wine. It is a thin-skinned grape so the wines are never deep in colour. Typically, Barolo’s are a palish ruby with an orange bricking to the rim with age. The aroma is always complex and expansive and Barolo’s regularly have notes of of plums, ripe black fruits, dried roses, tar, liquorice, and—according to a few fortunate connoisseurs—the local white truffles. Full flavours are backed by substantial tannins, good acidity, a dense texture and real alcoholic warmth; all the ingredients for an age worthy wine.

It is easy to see why this wine was such a good match for my venison main course. Because of the hint of truffle notes, it can be a wonderful match for mushroom risottos too.

Barolo wines need age to mellow, harmonise and soften. The vintages you will find on supermarket shelves will almost certainly be from 2009 and 2010 and usually I would warn against such a young Barolo but because these vintages are so good in the region, I think it is definitely worth

buying. An insider’s tip is to open and decant a young Barolo at least three hours before serving and don’t let the wine reach full room temperature or the alcohol will translate into a “hot” mouthfeel. Try and aim for around 16 to 18 degrees if you can.

I have searched the local wine outlets and two examples have caught my eye. Firstly, Tesco Finest Ascheri Barolo 2009 is a great buy at £13.99 and secondly, Waitrose’s Oddero Barolo 2009 at £23.99 is a truly excellent example of this wine and

worth every penny. I really hope you enjoy trying these wines!

Recipe of the monthChargrilled Chicken Kiss Kiss (serves 6)

Ingredients6 Boneless Chicken Breasts - skin removed

8oz Tin Pineapple in Natural Juice3 Spring onions - trimmed & thinly sliced

3 Tablespoons brown sugarGood pinch of Chilli Powder

Cocktail sticks

To prepare1 Make a small shallow pocket into the thickest part of each chicken breasts.

2 Drain the pineapple and reserve the juice.

3 Finely chop the pineapple and mix with the spring onion and a little chilli powder.

4 Spoon the mixture into each pocket and secure with the cocktail sticks.

5 Mix the pineapple juice and sugar together in a pan and leave over a low heat until the sugar has dissolved.

6 Bring the mixture to the boil, add some chilli powder and boil until syrup like and reduced to about 4 tablespoons of liquid.

To cook1 Barbecue or on a griddle pan over a medium heat for about 10/15 minutes, turning now and then.

2 Brush over some of the pineapple glaze and continue to cook for about 10 minutes both turning and basting until cooked through and the skin is golden.

A new theatre company has graced the stage

EPIC Theatre Company, which is based at The Centre on the Elsea Park estate in Bourne, performed comic short play ‘M60 Nowhere’ on two consecutive nights at the end of last month (March). The story of the play followed the goings-on of different characters in three separate cars as they get caught up in a traffic jam. The show was written by Paul Fellows, who runs EPIC – ‘Elsea Park in Costume’. Paul, 62, of Tennyson Drive, Bourne, said this production was written specifically for the actors involved in it, and tailored with suitable laughs-a-plenty. He added: “The group is committed to producing new vibrant theatre which is accessible to everyone.” Paul, who ran Bourne Youth Theatre for over ten years, is now planning ahead for the theatre company’s next show and is calling for new members to get involved. He said: “We always welcome new blood into our group and it would be great to get some new faces recruited for our second production.”

By creating a NW group in your vicinity you create a further deterrent for the would-be criminal adding a degree of risk for his nefarious activities NW is perfect for small avenues with a membership of 10-20 households ideal, but it is also valuable on larger roads where a group of adjacent properties combine. NW is basically a group a mutual protection group. Members try to spot any activity that might be suspicious and relate such information to the Police and to their fellow members. The Police support NW with street signage, crime prevention leaflets, and regular information about local incidents, potential scams and inappropriate behaviour that might present a threat to your locale. Each NW group needs a Co-ordinator to act as a focal point for communication between members and the Police but with the use of internet and other social media channels the task is not onerous. The Co-ordinator may also from time to time call a meeting of his members particularly if there is something specific to report. Jane has already organised fundraising coffee mornings and decided to take the plunge and organise a big event. She has set a goal of raising at least £4,000 for the hospital units that did so much for her and the others in the group.She said: “This is something I thought about doing while I was poorly with chemo, it kind of kept me going and was in all in my head, but now it’s actually going to happen it’s very exciting.” The ball is called Touched by Pink and is on June 28th at the Holiday Inn Express in Thorpe Wood Peterborough, starting at 6.45pm. Jane is excited about the “surprise celebrity appearance. Some of the events on the evening are still being organised, but confirmed so far are: a disco, raffle, an auction featuring a Welsh rugby shirt signed by the team and specially made cufflinks by Crown Jewellers, a three course meal, games and a champagne reception. Bourne woman who has battled breast cancer, is organising a Charity Ball to raise money for the Breast and Oncology units at Peterborough Hospital. Jane Mulhern, of Thyme Avenue, was devastated when she was diagnosed with breast cancer two years ago. During her treatment she felt she had no-one to talk to, and although the hospital was fantastic she badly needed to talk to others in the same situation. She said: “I wanted to talk to someone who’d been through it, I met a few ladies in hospital and we met regularly and it was fantastic. “We didn’t just talk about cancer we laughed, so I thought right that’s it I’ll set up a support group and from there it’s grown and there are now 25 of us. “We meet on the last Wednesday of the month, the main focus of the group is the help we can give one another, some are just starting their journey and they can talk to others that are a year through.”

If you have osteoporosis it means that you have lost some bone material. Your bones become less dense. This makes them more prone to break (fracture). Osteoporosis mainly affect older people but it can affect someone of any age. Some people have an increased risk of developing osteoporosis in later years. You can take measures to prevent or slow down bone loss. In certain people with osteoporosis, medication may be suggested to help restore some bone.

What can I do to prevent osteoporosis?The following may help to prevent or slow down bone loss. This advice is for everyone. If you already have osteoporosis the following measures can also help to try to slow down any bone loss.

ExerciseExercise can help to prevent osteoporosis. The pulling and tugging on the bones by your muscles during exercise helps to stimulate bone-making cells and strengthens your bones. Regular weight-bearing exercise throughout life is best, but it is never too late to start. This means exercise where your feet and legs bear your body’s weight, such as brisk walking, aerobics, dancing, running etc.

Osteoporosis |Your health

Calcium – you get 1000 mg of calcium most easily by:Drinking a pint of milk a day (this can include semi-skimmed or skimmed milk)Eating 50g (2oz) hard cheese such as Cheddar or Edam, or one pot of yoghurt (125g) or 50g of sardines.

Food and DietCalcium and Vitamin D are both important for bone health. Your body needs adequate supplies of Vitamin D in order to absorb (take up) the calcium that you eat or drink in your diet. The recommended daily intake for calcium in adults over the age of 50 is at least 1000 mg per day.

Everyone knows someone with dementia. The number of people living with dementia in Bourne and surrounding areas is increasing all the time. People living with dementia can lose confidence in themselves and worry about how they will manage in shops and on public transport – they can experience feelings of loneliness and isolation and feel that their community doesn’t understand them. Help us fight back against dementia by being part of the Dementia challenge – a government led nationwide initiative backed by the Alzheimer’s Society to create one million Dementia Friends by 2015.

The aim? To improve the quality of life for people with dementia and to help them participate in community activities rather than feeling excluded from them. The main idea of creating a dementia friendly community is that small changes can make a huge difference. For example, rather than assume someone who is unsteady or difficult to understand on a bus or in a supermarket queue has had too much to drink, training can help the shop assistant, driver or passerby realise that the person may have dementia and appreciate what it feels like to have dementia and that just establishing eye contact and personal warmth can make the experience less threatening. It involves changing our attitudes and behaviour towards a condition that can be frightening and difficult to comprehend. It encourages tolerance and thoughtfulness – trying to see the world through someone else’s eyes. A Dementia friendly community is one where people with dementia;• Can live as independently as possible• Are met with understanding and given support when they need it• Can still be part of the community Central to creating a dementia friendly Bourne will be information sessions. We often mention how the Bourne Business Chamber is more than just another business club, touching on our desire to support the Bourne Community wherever we can, as well as our objective of promoting Bourne based businesses, but what we tend to forget to mention is how much fun we have whilst pursuing these aims. Our monthly meetings are informal and although we attempt to keep them short and on track, we also allow the meeting to flow so that everyone can be heard, as well as keeping the meetings upbeat and light-hearted. Two of the twelve annual meetings are assigned to ‘social events’ where we get together at one of the local venues in Bourne to meet for a meal and chat as a group, including our members and their partners. One of these two social events is included in the annual subscription. When you also consider that many of our members provide offers and discounts to other members, then the £40 a year really does work out as good value. The group now exceeds fifty-five members and there is a mutual respect and comradeship throughout. With a growing member base covering many types of businesses and organisations there is bound to be a duplication of

members with similar businesses. The relationship and values that we follow as a ‘club’ ensure that there is no animosity within the group and everyone is encouraged to communicate and participate. As a group we can all recognise the challenges associated with setting up, building and maintaining a small ‘local’ business and we all share a desire to support the Bourne community. This common understanding and this shared aim results in a tight and supportive ‘family’ feel as well as providing a source of business and local information. Meetings are held on the third Tuesday of each month at Wake House and at each we welcome one or two individuals/businesses to give a presentation. In my opinion, this is the most important pension information I have ever seen. The Chancellor announced a series of radical pension reforms in his Budget on 19 March 2014 and to my knowledge, no one in the pensions industry saw this coming. Pensions have become a very important subject for many, especially now Auto Enrolment joiners have exceeded 1 million people, and this will be great news for almost everyone. Q: Is it true that I can take my entire pension out as a lump sum?

Currently most investors aged 55 or over can take up to 25% of their pension as tax-free cash and a taxable income from the rest. There are, however, rules that determine the maximum income most people can draw each year.These restrictions are currently in consultation and may be removed in April 2015 so pension investors will be able to take the whole of their pension as a lump sum if they so wish, subject to consultation. The first 25% will be tax free, whilst the rest will be taxed as income.

Q: There were restrictions to how much pension I could take out but I’ve heard that these have increased?

Drawdown investors currently have a yearly limit to the income they can draw. They can choose from zero up to the maximum. This maximum has increased by 25% (from 120% to 150% of a broadly equivalent annuity) for investors starting

a drawdown account after 27 March 2014. For instance,

an investor aged 65 with a £100,000 pension starting drawdown today can draw a maximum income of £7,080 a year. If they

start from 27 March 2014 this will rise to £8,850*.

Q: My pensions are worth less than £30k. Can I take these as a lump sum?

From 27 March 2014 investors aged 60 or over with total pension savings under £30,000 will be allowed to draw them as a lump sum. The first 25% will be tax free, and the rest taxed as income. This can only be done once.

Investors with individual personal pension pots smaller than £10,000 will be allowed to draw them as a lump sum from age 60. Again, the first 25% will be tax free, and the rest taxed as income. This can only be done three times.

Q: What happens to investors already in drawdown?

A: Investors who started income drawdown before 27 March 2014 will remain on their current maximum income until their next annual review date. If the three yearly GAD calculation is due at that review, their maximum income will be recalculated based on the current fund value and that month’s GAD rate. They will then be eligible to take 150% of the new GAD limit.

Clients not due a GAD calculation will simply move from 120% to 150% of their existing GAD rate at their next annual review. These same existing drawdown clients may potentially have their maximum income restrictions removed completely in April 2015 if the proposed changes are agreed following consultation.

Q: What is the government currently consulting on?

The government is consulting on “Freedom and choice in pensions”. The consultation relates to whether the proposed changes will happen and how. The main points which affect investors with private pensions are:

• Ability to take unlimited income from pensions (from age 55, rising to 57 in 2028). The first 25% remains tax free, whilst the rest is taxed as income• Review of the 55% tax charge on death in drawdown/ post 75• Review of the tax rules that prevent individuals aged 75+ from claiming pension tax relief • Increase in minimum pension age from 55 to 57 from 2028 and further rises after that so it remains 10 years below state pension age.• A consumer’s right to financial guidance at retirement• Potential use of (yet to be developed) pension products for social care

The consultation will close on 11 June 2014 and the government aims to confirm any changes by 22 July 2014. The changes will potentially be effective from April 2015.

Q: I have heard that the Isa rules have changed recently. What has happened?

Yes, the rules have changed from the 1st July 2014 and here is a summary of the changes:

• The new ISA allowance - the amount you can invest each tax year - will rise to £11,880 on 6 April, and then to £15,000 on 1 July 2014.• Under the new rules you will also be able to split the ISA allowance as you wish between a Cash ISA and Stocks & Shares ISA. At

Encircled in its medieval limestone walls which surge dramatically from the sea, labyrinthine alleys and piazzas are alive with the buzz of outdoor life. Cosmopolitan cafés spill out onto the pavements of Placa Street, where glasses of the local plum brandy flow. Set sail north to Hvar, one of Europe’s most beautiful islands – a sophisticated hideaway reminiscent of St Tropez. Sleek yachts dot the harbour, nestling in the embrace of attractive Romanesque churches, palaces and villas. Sail over to Korcula – reputed birthplace of Marco Polo – to discover secluded bays and wander medieval streets brimming with folkloric tradition. Further south, along the dramatically crafted coastline of rugged inlets and verdant islands lapped by the purest waters,

Step back into history-steeped cities and sleepy villages where life continues much as it did a century ago, the glittering Adriatic beckoning along the dramatic coast.


A hundred Bourne Grammar students took part in a lavish sell-out production of Bernstein’s West Side Story, which ran from 16-19 March. For many of the lead cast, this will be their final appearance in a Bourne Grammar School production before leaving for university. Alistair Brown and Lizzie Emery, who are both experienced actors with long careers on the Bourne Grammar stage, played the doomed lovers Tony and Maria. Headteacher, Jonathan Maddox, paid tribute to their versatility and professionalism saying Alistair’s scenes with Maria “brought the audience to rapt silence; they will lodge in our memories..” Jonathan complemented Lizzie Emery on her vocal numbers, describing her as “incomparable as Maria, exquisite in every flourish, every line, every interaction. When she appeared we were enthralled; we knew that we were experiencing something rare and very special.” Other final performances of note include Pippa Atkinson who played the part of Anita, Ollie Rushen as Riff and Lewis Beaver as Bernardo. Harry Jervis as Action and Tom Millar as Chino were excellent,

Katie Shales as Krupke and Dominic Eustance as Baby John provided the few comedic moments in a show which otherwise tinged with tragedy. Nearly forty students, drawn from all year groups, had significant parts and several more joined for the dance numbers. The show was directed by Subject Leader for Drama, Nick Moxley and supported by several colleagues. The sparkling and highly polished dance routines were choreographed by Welland School of Dance instructor, Debbie Shuttleworth assisted by Adam Binns.

hen House of Fraser asked my advice about decorating a dining room I thought I'd suggest a few ideas that would work for any size, shape or style of room. Accepting that most of us would like a larger space, here are 10 versatile tips to make your dining room feel enormous. Warning: don't use them all at once!

1. Stretch the space visually with patterns on the walls; wide stripes or another horizontal pattern can be very effective.2. Add life and soul with lots of reflective surfaces; anything shiny will do it, even the ceiling!3. A large painting or wall mural that allows you to imagine yourself travelling into it draws the eye and stimulates the imagination.4. Focus light into the centre of the room; a pendant light above the table is ideal.5. Furniture that is 'see-through', such as a glass topped table, makes the space feel more roomy.

6. Create a cameo; arrange some of your favourite pieces on a shelf or sideboard with mirror glass behind.7. Hide the corners of the room, where the walls meet the floor, by strategically placing something there; a plant is but one idea.8. Invite your loved ones to the party; gather all your framed photos and display them in the dining room.9. If you are really bold choose the darkest colour you can and decorate all round; black is perfect for making the space seem endless, or10. Painting Furniture: Step 1: Inspiration First of all, find your inspiration. Perhaps you have a piece of fabric which you love the colours of or a photograph of somewhere you have travelled to, and want to capture the essence of?

Step 2: Surface preparation Previously painted furniture should be given a light sanding to provide a key to help the paint stick. No need for a primer! If painting directly onto untreated wood you can use the Claypaint as a primer by thinning it with 20% water.

Step 3: Applying paintStir 750ml pot well with an old spoon or stick. Apply paint with a roller or brush depending on the final texture or finish required. If using a roller, opt for a mini roller, which will help to reach difficult corners or detailing.

As we look back there are highlights; our Civic Service in the Abbey Church was such a special occasion with our family and friends filling that beautiful historic building, our Civic dinner was special with Steve Price entertaining all our guests with his illusions. But the big highlight for me was giving the freedom of Bourne to Jade Ethrington the four times Olympian. What a special day that was for Bourne. Never before has anyone received the freedom of our town and it could not have been granted to a more worthy recipient. What a talented, determined, humble girl Jade is. She must have inspired many of the youngsters in the

schools that she visited , they all gave her such a welcome. Now we will hand over the chains of office on May 13th to Councillor Bob Russell as he takes over as the new Mayor. His Civic Service is on 18th May in The Abbey. Angela and I wish him well in his year. It will be a year that he will never forget and it will be full of rich memories of delightful people and wonderful places. We would like to thank Nelly Jacobs our town clerk , Ian Sismey and Fiona Barker and my fellow town councillors for all their support during our year and thank you to the people of Bourne who make this town such a special place to live.

hen two students from Bourne Academy were tragically hit by a vehicle on the A15 at Northorpe earlier this year, it was Lincolnshire’s Air Ambulance that responded in haste to transport the girls to a specialist unit for head injuries in Nottingham. Since that day, Bourne Academy are pleased to report that they girls have both been back at school for half a term now. Teachers and students from Level 3 courses at Bourne Academy BTEC Music Technology, BTEC Art & Design and A-Level Performing Arts came together to plan and execute ‘The Big Gig’ to be held at Bourne Corn Exchange. The line-up for the evening was put together by Ted Fisk, Head of Performing Arts at Bourne Academy and founder of Cutting Hedge Promotions, a non-profit making Music Promotion company that offers the students the opportunities to gain hands on experience with live music events.

First up was soloist Leona Bilby, who came third in this year’s Bourne Academy’s Got Talent. Her haunting but melodic sound is pleasing to the ear and unique in style. The songs are an independent folk style, of which are her own material and are expertly played and delivered with an assured confidence.” Next up was ‘The Straights’ from Deeping, playing their rich brand of acoustic indie, treating the audience

to their collection of tightly rehearsed fast paced covers from this decade such as ‘Valerie’ by Amy Winehouse and ‘Dance Floor’ by Artic Monkeys to an Elvis Presley mash-up of ‘Hound Dog’ and ‘Blue Suede Shoes’. ‘Dumb’ next, who are a mixture of band members from Braceborough and Bourne that like to thrash out their own style of fast paced hard rock anthems. The four piece have been known for covers such as The Darkness’s ‘I Believe in a Thing Called Love’, yet tonight they took the opportunity to unleash their new material featured on their first self-titled EP. Head of Music, Aaron Beeken has been playing in rock bands for years and presently writes, performs and produces music for local band ‘Sons of Kal-El’. Their hotly anticipated new album ‘Songs from the Phantom Zone’ was available to purchase on the night along with T-shirts. The atmosphere was one of genuine support and praise for the band. and the young people of Bourne had a visibly great time letting their hair down on the last day of term joining in with their inspirational music teacher’s trademark stance as a mark of respect. Finally, to headline the event local heroes ‘Albion’ put on a tightly rehearsed spectacle that could only be compared to a professional rock concert. Their set had it: all passion, pace and professionalism. The light show that began with atmospheric music to a blacked out stage and the use of glow-sticks that were offered to everyone in the crowd, brought the Corn Exchange to life. Screaming fans set the tone for a passionate display of fast paced indie/rock material from their newest EP ‘These are Holy Days’.

Two Family Tickets to The Lincolnshire Show

popular crop for farmers in past times was flax and a small but thriving industry became established in Bourne during the early years of the 20th century.

Flax is a plant grown for its fibrous stems from which linen and other products are made, the fibre being soft, lustrous and flexible and bundles of it have the appearance of long blonde hair, hence the literary description of flaxen. The fibre is also a raw material in the high quality paper industry and used for printed banknotes, rolling paper for cigarettes and tea bags.

Mills for spinning flaxen yarn were invented in the late 18th century and were soon in use in the fens where the cultivation of flax continued during the 19th century. But production on a much larger scale was revived during and after the Great War of 1914-18 when the old grain warehouse at the end of Wherry’s Lane was converted for the processing, providing a large number of jobs for workers who flooded in from all parts of the county to take advantage of the seasonal opportunity to earn extra money.

Bringing in the flax meant the daily movement of large numbers of itinerant workers who were transported from field to field by lorry to keep pace with the harvest and in the summer of 1918, 500 casual workers were encamped on the Abbey Lawn for several weeks assisted by

troops from various regiments while harvesting operations were underway in the surrounding countryside.

The encampment became a small tented town with a first aid centre and hospital, a canteen where the workers ate, and even a marquee which was used as a church. Harvesting flax was back breaking labour and involved long hours but the workers did have some time for leisure in the evenings and at weekends when they took part in the social life of the town, using the public houses, shops, churches and other amenities and many made friends among the local population.

Today, the growing and harvesting of flax means mechanisation and although it has been a rare crop in recent years, it is slowly making a comeback in the fields of South Lincolnshire where many acres of countryside turn an attractive blue as the crops come into flower during late spring and early summer although the days when large labour forces were needed at harvest time have long gone.

Bourne Bridge Club was born over 25 years ago when a group of eight people started bridge lessons. They continued to play together in someone’s house each week. Since then, and after several venue changes, the club now has over sixty members (including several of the original ones) who play at Bourne’s Masonic Hall every Thursday evening. “Interest in playing bridge is increasing,” explained Graham Robinson, chairman of the club. “Bridge is a fascinating game, for people of all ages, which not only stimulates the brain but is also a great social activity.” In order to introduce more people in the Bourne area to bridge, Bourne Bridge Club (with the support of the Len Pick Trust) has embarked on provision of bridge lessons. They have just completed a course of ten lessons for beginners. “We were delighted by the level of interest in the lessons.” Most of those who attended the ‘Beginners’ Course’, along with some other ‘novice’ players, will continue to meet on Tuesday evenings for the next ten weeks at the Masonic Hall to play bridge. The sessions will be supported by club members and run at a gentle pace with a mid-evening break for refreshments. A further course for ‘Improvers’ (those who have been playing bridge for about a year and who are looking to improve their bidding and card playing skills) is being held on Sunday

evenings from the end of April. Bourne Bridge Club is progressing in other ways too. “Last year we joined the EBU (English Bridge Union). We also entered a team in the Northamptonshire League – finishing fourth – not bad for a first attempt. We’ll be entering a team again this year” said Graham. “As well as playing some friendly matches against other clubs which will give members who wish the opportunity to play more competitive bridge.” Bourne Bridge Club members meet to play bridge every Thursday evening at 6:50pm at the Masonic Hall and play until about 10.15pm. They are hoping the Tuesday evenings will also become a permanent, regular fixture.
