I can’t believe it’s August already. It’s a special month for me as I’m getting married and hoping that the lovely sunny weather we’ve had will continue!

This month we have some great reading. Take a look at our Summer Holiday Fun feature and if that whets your appetite to visit Twinlakes have a go at entering our competition to win a family day pass. Read about the shops in Angel Precinct – there’s some hidden gems there you may not know about. There’s something for everyone in our lovely market town and in our busy lives it’s easy to not realise what’s just round the corner. One of our readers wrote to me and said they were going to try the Shalimar restaurant after reading the magazine, they hadn’t realised it was there!

In this issue we’ve done a special focus on Eden Body and Skincare Centre in Bourne. Our Sales Director Claire Saberton tried the new Active Resurface 35 facial – read the article to find out about her wonderful experience! We’ve also featured a fabulous parent and toddler group, Bambinos, set up to help relieve isolation for new parents and give them a chance to make new friends and relax with their little ones. Have a look at the smiling faces in the picture – and if you’re a new parent, go along and give it a go!

Thank you to our contributors who never fail to send in interesting articles. Also, we welcome the first column by Bourne’s new Mayor, David Higgs. And thanks to our advertisers who support us. Discovering Bourne is very much a team effort!

support.

Over the coming months we will be letting you know how you can support the charities that I have chosen in my Mayoral year; the Food Bank which is now up and running is one and the second is Disability Lincs Bourne Branch which I will say more about another time.

Bourne in Bloom is another important date in the Bourne Calendar and our thanks go to all those sponsoring tubs and the shops who have hanging baskets. Judging day was on July 10th and we hope that we do as well or even better than last year.

We spent the afternoon of Armed Forces Day with the residents of Meadow Close. They celebrated the day with a wonderful tea, entertainment and of course a raffle raising £220 for Help the Heroes. Well done.

Bourne Youth Centre had their open day on 30th June and we spent a very pleasant afternoon meeting members of the Centre and learning about the many activities that the youth are involved in. The youngsters were so enthusiastic and motivated so we will certainly be visiting and supporting them again.

Looking forward to meeting more of you over the next month.

If you would like to get in touch with David, please email [email protected] with ‘Mayor’ in the subject heading

B ecoming Mayor of Bourne is a privilege and honour and my wife and I are looking forward to meeting as many of you as possible over the coming year.

Our first duty was to attend the Butterfield Day Care Centre as Ian Short has worked there for 25 years, he is such a happy member of that hard working team and we look forward to supporting the Centre in the future.

The Bourne to Dance Academy concert showed us what talented young people we have who are so dedicated to giving up hours of practice to perfect their skills. The standard and variety of the performances were amazing and we thoroughly enjoyed the whole show.

Of course two big events in Bourne Calendar took place in June on the Wellhead and each year we hold our breath praying for fine weather as so much work is put into organising The Beer Festival and The Classic Car and Bike Show. The weather behaved and both events were the best we have had. We certainly enjoyed sampling some of the many beers on offer and listening to both local groups and others from much further afield. The Classic Car show was bigger than ever and many of the Exhibitors told us that Bourne was one of their favourite shows because of the good organisation and delightful venue.

On June 2nd the Civic Service was held at the Abbey Church and our thanks go to Father Chris and Rev Sheena Cleaton for a beautiful Service. The Abbey was packed with our Town Council, Dignitaries from other towns, our family, friends and Bourne people. Thank you all for your

We attended a coffee morning which was in aid of a new group who are wanting to support cancer sufferers and their carers, they meet once a month as a group and what a jolly bunch they are. If you know anyone who might need this support please contact Jane Mulhern on 01778 423074.

Dear readers, Each year millions of UK consumers fall victim to scams and in this month’s topic I will cover a prevalent one known as the ‘Microsoft Scam’. The scenario is that you get a call from someone claiming to be from Microsoft (or a similar IT company) offering you computer support. They may take you through a number of steps and will begin by highlighting many problems that your PC or laptop has. They usually then say that your computer has been infected and they can help you solve the problem. Some scammers will ask you to give them remote access to your PC or laptop and will then use that access to either steal personal data, or download malware and then ask for money in return for a lifetime of ‘protection’ from the malware they pretend is on your machine.

Protect yourself:-• Hang up immediately, this is a scam.• Remember, no legitimate company will ever call you in this way; they have no access to your PC or laptop and know nothing about your computer set-up.• Do not let anyone guide you to a certain webpage, download software or instruct you to change a setting on your PC or laptop.• Do not provide any personal information and never give your credit card or bank details to anyone you don’t know. The advice is, be vigilant and never give an unsolicited caller remote access to your computer.

Sally analysed every aspect of my skin. Sally complimented me on my skin as well as picking up on my problem areas. Next she exfoliated again in two steps. This felt a little tingly but not uncomfortable. This was then removed and my best bit was next, a soothing masque I can only explain as pure indulgent

luxury even better than a glass of my favourite wine!!! “Hot steam towels to aid the removal of the masque, followed by sun protection moisturiser and then some skin perfect primer. Sally gave me some home care advice and sent me

home with some dermalogica samples to try. Result - noticeably radiant healthy skin in one treatment - I am off out with no make-up for the first time in my life.”

Director Claire Saberton visited Eden Body and Skincare Centre to try a revolutionary new treatment called Active Resurface 35. Active Resurface 35 is an advanced 45-minute resurfacing treatment that applies a cocktail of advanced cosmeceutical ingredients. The treatment itself has three options, Power Active, Intensive Active and Ultimate Active Option, this is decided by the skin therapist after performing Dermalogica’s unique Face Mapping® skin analysis technique, along with a thorough professional consultation. Active Resurface 35 provides intense resurfacing to stimulate cell renewal and cell turnover whilst helping to treat some of the most prevalent skin concerns (skin ageing, pigmentation, dehydration, and congestion). The 45-minute treatment costs £45 and includes Face Mapping® skin analysis. (A course of 6 is recommended for optimum results) Claire described the treatment as “One of the most wonderful experiences I’ve ever had.” She said: “Sally pre-cleansed and then cleansed with an exfoliating cleanser, at this point I am very relaxed!! Next she performed Face Mapping®, a revolutionary approach to skin analysing, a technique with which

arents of Babies and toddlers who may 'feel stuck at home' can enjoy a place to relax and socialise, as well as having some fun with their little ones, at Bambinos Baby Centre. Bambinos, which is held twice weekly and is run by Becky Wilkinson, and Amy Crowson, was established as a support network for local parents nearly two years ago. The main aim being to reduce isolation and give parents a chance to meet other parents. Becky said: "Some of our mums have partners who work long shift patterns, their partners work away, or they simply don't have family support locally.” Originally a baby centre, the group now runs a toddler session on a Monday morning 10-12 am and is from walking to pre-school age. Babies are still welcome on toddler days. Bambinos is open Fridays 10-1 for Mummy's Retreat and Baby Pitstop. Becky said: "The group is run by volunteers and is completely non-profit making. “Becky said: “We have Mummy's retreat and Baby Pitstop. Retreat offering a relaxing friendly environment where mothers can come down have a cup of tea and their little ones can play with age appropriate toys while mummy relaxes. “The Pitstop name was established as we felt changing and feeding facilities in town were limited. So, we set up baby Pitstop on both days, mothers are welcome to come to breast and bottle feed in a comfortable environment and we also have changing facilities. We have craft activities, role play, sensory and soft play, toddler tales. The children's favourite activity being song time with the parachute at the end of the toddler session. “

• Bambinos is based at the back of the new Busy Bees nursery, 14-18 Manor Lane, Bourne. Entrance fee is £1.50 which includes a healthy snack and juice for children and cake and hot drink for parents.

Your Health Mr J. Sunner. DO. BSc (ost). Registered Osteopath

The hand and wrist have multiple small joints that work together to produce motion. This gives the fine motion needed to thread a needle or tie a shoelace. When the joints are affected by arthritis, activities of daily living can be difficult. Arthritis can occur in multiple areas of the hand and wrist. It can have multiple causes. It is estimated that one out of every five people living in the United Kingdom has at least one joint with signs or symptoms of arthritis. About half of arthritis sufferers are under age 50.

Arthritis is the leading cause of disability in the United Kingdom. It typically occurs from either disease or trauma. The exact number of people with arthritis in the hand and wrist is not known. Cartilage works as nature’s “shock absorber.” It provides a smooth gliding surface for the joint. All arthritic joints lose cartilage. When the cartilage becomes worn or damaged, or is lost

due to disease or trauma, the joint no longer has a painless, mobile area of motion. The body attempts to make up for the lost cartilage. It produces fluid in the joint lining (synovium), which tries to act like a cushion, like water in a waterbed. But it also causes the joint to swell. This restricts motion. The swelling causes stretching of the joint covering (capsule), which causes pain.

Over time, if the arthritis is not treated, the bones that make up the joint can lose their normal shape. This causes more pain and further limits motion. When arthritis occurs due to disease, the onset of symptoms is gradual and the cartilage decreases slowly. The two most common forms of arthritis from disease are osteoarthritis and rheumatoid arthritis. Osteoarthritis is much more common and generally affects older people. It appears in a predictable pattern in certain joints.

“You are like a hurricane, there’s calm in your eye”, Neil Young – rock musician

feel the calm that is in the eye of the storm. It does not mean that difficulties will never occur. What it does mean is that when they do occur, you are more likely to hold your centre and not be blown away into the storm.

ave you ever noticed how in the hot weather, it is more difficult to stay focussed? It is easy for things to just not get done. We know it is the warm weather that makes us feel like we would prefer to go to the beach or hang out at the swimming pool but we have things to do and we must get them done. It is easy to lose track and miss a few things. The fact it though –that nearly everybody is feeling the same! There is a hurricane of activity going on out there and it is easy to feel “blown away” by its Energy. In Oriental theory, summer and warm periods are periods of expanded or “Yang” Energy. It is a busy time for nature just as it is a busy time for us because everything is moving. So, how do we avoid feeling “blown away”? The Aikido master, Ueshiba, described it as being in the centre of the hurricane. There can be chaos going on around you but as long as you can maintain your centre and cultivate an awareness of your centre it is more difficult to be pulled away from your centre. This is actually central to the philosophy behind arts such as Tai Chi and meditation as well as Aikido. Disciplines like martial arts and meditation specifically employ techniques to cultivate stillness. If we can develop a sense of our own centre in physical and mental ways we start to

Here are a few tips that may help:-

• Learn breathing techniques from Tai Chi, meditation or Yoga to calm your body

• If you are feeling like you are being spread too thinly avoid stimulants and sugar

• Make time for yourself – the world will not stop turning if you take a few minutes to relax!

• Cool your hot fire energy by relaxing near water.

The Bourne Harriers August Golf Tip

Competitors prepare for the ever-popular annual Grimsthorpe 10krace and 3k fun run that will take place on Bank Holiday Monday

Set amongst the beautiful and picturesque grounds of Grimsthorpe Castle, this annual running event takes place on Bank Holiday Monday 26th August. Situated just North of Bourne on the A151, the venue offers a mainly off-road yet undulating course that attracts a competitive field. In 2010, a record number of 441 runners finished the race, while the present

course records are held by Matthew Gunby (32.35) and Felicity Milton (35.54) in the Ladies section. There will also be a 3k fun run and the grounds will be free to enter for competitors. Entries for the race are now being accepted, please enter online at www.bournetownharriers.org or contact Tony Gilbert via the website.

Formed in 1987 as Bourne Runners, the club is England Athletics Accredited and provides social and competitive athletic events for seniors and juniors alike. Senior training is held during the week on Tuesday and Thursday nights at 18.30 and on Saturday and Sunday mornings starting at 8.30. All sessions meet at the green on Beech Avenue. Please feel free to come along for a couple of sessions and if you like it, then please join us.

The junior section continues to be well attended with the club being represented in various field and track events throughout the season. Junior training is now close to capacity so please get in touch with the club so your name may be added to the waiting list. Visit www.bournetownharriers.org

Hold your finishing positionGolf is played with a stationary ball. Golfers aim to make a crisp contact with the ball at the bottom of their swing. To do this they start from a stationary set up position and they are balanced right through to the stationary finishing position. How many of you think about your finishing position? If you start balanced (stationary) and finish balanced, there must be a strong chance that you are balanced through the impact area thus producing the desired crisp contact? My tip to you this month -hold your finishing position until your ball stops moving. Doing this, you will improve your balance and hit crisper shots.Tip supplied by PGA professional Darren Game of Bourne Golf Studio 01778 395992

BBC SocialMembers of the Bourne Business Chamber met for a summer social evening at Café 35 in North Street and enjoyed a three course meal and drinks.

Two of the Discovering Bourne team were there and Editor Sally Hunt said: “We had a lovely meal and it was great to get to know some of the members in a social way. “The members are all like-minded individuals and the social event was an excellent way of having fun and meeting new people, while still networking.” The next meeting of the BBC will be held on the 13th August at Wake House, starting at 6pm. There will be a talk by Shirley Bates entitled ‘Why an apprentice may enhance your business,’ and an overview of the housing sales market in the Bourne area and an update on the lettings market, by Peter Ledger and Claire Soutar of Newton Fallowell. Non-members may attend up to two meetings for no charge before joining – so come along and make new friends and see how the BBC could benefit you!

Your local schools

oing up to big school is thrilling and scary but also a huge step for every 11 year old. Here at Bourne Academy we do our very best to smooth the transition and calm the nerves of every student coming to join us.

Transition 2013 has been our most exciting yet. Year 6 pupils from all local schools in and around Bourne have taken part in Maths, English and Science workshops, received a visit from the RE department and been treated to a performance by our talented Year 10 Drama students on ‘Fears of Starting Secondary School’.

More recently every new student visited Bourne Academy for a complete Taster Day. Year 6 students were able to meet their new teachers, their new tutor for September and their Year 7 buddies. Buddies are present in tutor groups, at break and lunch times to offer advice and

support for every new bewildered student. The Year 7 buddies were outstanding on Taster Day, helping year 6 pupils negotiate the corridors and find lessons without getting lost!

During their Taster Day year 6 pupils decorated cup-cakes and tried a drumming session on African drums. The canteen was open for delicious lunches and snacks and some young students joined in an Academy assembly in the main school hall. The day was most enjoyable and all the year 6 pupils left Bourne Academy feeling a little more excited

and a little less anxious about starting at ‘big school’ in September! We are looking forward to welcoming them all in September in their smart new uniform and know Bourne Academy will be able to offer them all individual education and support throughout their secondary school days.

Barnsdale

T ist

he old hall at Barnsdale was originally constructed in 1890 for the 6th Earl Fitzwilliam as a family hunting lodge. The hall was built on the sheltered south facing slopes of the Vale of Catmose and the Gwash Valley. The geographical position of the hall placed it in the heart of the most prestigious fox hunts in the country; The Quorn, The Belvoir and The Cottesmore and gave the Earl the opportunity to play host to Royalty, including Edward, the late Duke of Windsor and Mrs. Simpson and the cream of England’s aristocracy.

It is believed the Barnsdale name was possibly brought from the area of the same name, just north of Doncaster, in South Yorkshire where the Fitzwilliam family had their ancestral estate.

During the post war years, the hall fell into disrepair and passed through the hands of a variety of owners. When the twin valleys of the River Gwash were flooded in the mid 1970’s to create a reservoir, Rutland Water became Europe’s largest manmade lake and resulted in the creation of extensive nature reserves which attract a large number of endangered species, particularly the Osprey.

The 80’s and 90’s saw the construction and expansion of Barnsdale Hall Hotel and Country Club, with the main hall and its rich history as its centerpiece. A place to relax and enjoy the stunning views as the superbly landscaped gardens slope gently down onto the shores of Rutland Water, and ponder awhile on those who came before you more than 100 years ago!

Facebook isn’t scary – the basics Love it or hate it, facebook is a superb way of keeping in touch and sharing information with friends, family and interest groups. Finding long lost friends and colleagues is almost guaranteed. This short article will show you how to get started and how to hide those unwanted messages from facebook ‘friends’. Give it a try, it truly isn’t scary and you have more control on what you ‘see’ than you may think.SIGNING UP TO FACEBOOKNice and easy this. Go to www.facebook.com and complete the sign up form and click on Submit.

Your account will be created and you will now see something like the first sign-in screen as shown.Skip step one for now (you can add friends later). You will now be prompted for some personal info which will help old friends and relatives find you. This includes Schools, Colleges, Universities, Employers, Home town and current town.Click next and you will be asked to upload a picture for your profile. Don’t be shy! By uploading your picture it can help others confirm who you are (long lost friends, family members, work colleagues etc;). If you don’t want an image just click on Skip. You now have your facebook account set-up and ready to go.WHAT IS THIS EMAIL VERIFICATION I’VE BEEN SENT?Whilst you were busy setting up the above, facebook will have sent an email to your inbox to ask you to verify you are who you say you are. Go to your email and click on the verification link in

If someone is bombarding you with facebook posts that are of no interest then you can stop these in two ways. The first way is to Unfriend them, hence removing them completely. The better way, if you want to leave them on your friends list, is to stop receiving updates from them to your newsfeed. To achieve either of these:Search or Click on a friend to view their profile.Click on the on the ‘Friends’ tab (see image below) Either click on Unfriend to remove them completely or remove the tick from Show in News feed to stop this individual’s posts appearing in your facebook news feed (posts).

Your Finances

ow that most banks and building societies have dispensed with their financial advisers, I have found an increasing number of clients needing Independent Financial Advice (IFA) for two reasons: Firstly, choosing their options when an investment or other policy comes to it’s natural maturity (or the plan needs reviewing for any other reason). Some clients have found that the products they have been sold, in some cases, were not suitable for their needs or have not delivered what was expected – resulting in a complaint. When it comes to investigating such cases many organisations make a derisory offer of compensation and when pressed will fund the services of an IFA.

A monthly feature that focuses on current financial issues. Many local Banks and Building Societies have lost their ‘in house’ adviser and few are independent. Eamonn is a fully

qualified local Independent Financial Adviser.

N

Delivering Simple Financial Advice - that really works

It is important that you take advice on any offer made because the letter often contains the phrase ‘full and final settlement’ so that if you realise at a later date that you have a mis-selling issue – you cannot request further compensation. The consequences can be even more substantial. Remember that the ‘No Win – No Fee’ organisations are unable to provide financial advice unless they are fully qualified – so understanding the implications and unravelling an adviser’s financial report is unlikely to be within their skill set. If you are concerned about your financial plans or if you are in the process of challenging the advice you received - give me a call to arrange a FREE initial meeting.

Legal Corner

ne of the most common causes of neighbour disputes involves boundaries. If you are unsure as to where your boundary is or who owns it, the starting point is always your title deeds.

You should not hang things on your neighbour’s fence, use their fence as support for your plants or paint your side of your neighbour’s fence without their permission.

There is no general legal requirement to maintain hedges. However you should not allow unkempt hedges to block footpaths or obscure motorists view. Your property may have a covenant requiring you to maintain your hedge so you should check your deeds. Tall hedges may be covered by regulations under the Anti- Social Behavior Act 2003 and if certain criteria apply your Local Authority will, for a fee assess the hedge and decide whether any action should be taken to reduce its height .

Trees can add a great deal of character to a garden but they can also cause a nuisance to a next door neighbour when they start encroaching over the fence. If the branches of a neighbour’s tree start to grow over to your side, you can cut them back to the boundary

They say everybody needs good neighbours but sometimes things can go wrong

between you and your neighbour’s property, as long as the tree is not under a tree preservation order, or in a conservation area. The branches and any fruit on them which you have cut down from your side still belong to the tree owner so you must return them. You would be well advised to have a word with your neighbour before trimming back the branches to let them know your intentions. This will ensure that good neighbourly relations are preserved.

Neighbour disputes can easily spiral out of control, so amicable resolution to disputes is always the best route. Try to discuss the problem with your neighbour. If you’re worried about approaching them, write a letter, explaining the problem.

Window DressingWindows bring light and warmth into our living spaces but when it’s dark the glass appears as a cold, black reflective surface. How much sun comes in through the window? Is there a draught? How pleasant is the view? How private are you? How secure do you want to feel? Whatever the situation you will be dressing your window somehow!

Here are some pointers:- Curtains: The choice between full length and shorter sill length curtains is one that depends on other things in the room but if you have a radiator beneath the window it makes no sense to cover it with fabric. Long curtains give a sense of luxury because of the amount of fabric used but short curtains can look very good too. Obviously the more fabric you use the costlier they will be but unless you are very good with the sewing machine, I would advise you to have your curtains professionally made up and lined; they will always hang well, last a long time and look smart. You can save money by choosing a plain colour or small pattern and use a curtain header that is economical with fabric. Blinds: You can get a blind that will do exactly what you want and blinds are a particularly good choice for south and west facing windows to screen the sun. Flat panel blinds that slide on a runner are modern and sleek. A traditional favourite is the venetian blind and it is excellent at casting interesting shadows across the room. Roman blinds are a good alternative to curtains as they use much less fabric yet give a soft finish to a window. Blinds can seem stark on their own but team them with a pair of curtains and you have both practicality and a sense of luxury even though the curtains may only be ‘dress’ curtains; this combination works well in bay windows. Film: Combine window film with either curtains or blinds, or indeed use it on its own, as it is very versatile. It provides privacy whilst allowing in light and there are many designs available to suit your home. Made to measure and easy to fit yourself, the quality is very good. I recently applied a squared pattern film to the glass on my porch door and love the way the light shines through it. Window film will last many years with care.

There are lots of ideas for window dressing which cannot be covered in a short piece like this so if you want specific help, maybe you want something unusual or have problem windows, contact me via my website. You should always change the locks when moving into a previously occupied property, as you have no idea who might be holding a

key. Ideally you want to replace the locks with a patented or restricted locking system. Patented keys carry legal protection preventing copies being made without providing proof of ownership.

Carpet cleaning companies unite

Tim Armstrong of Home Revive has called upon the support of Paul Cunnington of Cleancare Lincolnshire Ltd. He said:

Paul is well established in Bourne and offers a fantastic service. He is trustworthy and reliable and offers the same total care service for carpets and upholstered furniture. “Unfortunately due to ill health I will be unable to work for around four months and I can rely on Paul to work with my existing customers and give them the same service and care that they are used to with me.

Tim would like to thank all of his customers past and present for their continued support and well wishes and particularly for their promises of future work once he is fit and back to work.

“ “

Two of Bourne’s established carpet cleaning companies have joined forces for a few months due to the ill health of one of the owners.

Pet’s Corner

Beware of

The innocent little grass seed can cause a lot of pain and distress to the dog and expense to the owner. They get caught in a dogs coat during a walk and can get embedded between toes causing an abscess, in an ear canal causing head shaking and pain and in the eye causing a painful inflamed eye.

Editor Sally Hunt had to rush her dog Archie, a Cockapoo, to Animates Veterinary Clinic in Market Deeping after he started shaking his head and crying, in obvious distress, on the way back from his walk.

She said: “We had already had a problem with a grass seed in his ear last year so luckily I knew the signs. He was rubbing his head against the ground and cried out in pain if I touched his ear.

“I went straight to Animates and he had to be sedated for them to get it out as it was too painful for him otherwise.

“Unbelievably he also had one in his other ear

Summer should be a time to enjoy long walks in the countryside, but every dog owner needs to be aware of the dangers of grass seeds becoming embedded in their pet’s ears, paws and eyes.

and some in his paws too. I was horrified that I had missed the ones in his paws and now check him thoroughly after every walk.”

Vet Morwenna Hawkins said: “It is a real problem at this time of year. Last week I had to take grass seeds out of dog’s ears three days in a row, so the season is definitely here.

“I would advise owners to avoid walking in long grass, keep their dog’s coat as short as possible and check ears, between the toes and armpits after every walk.”

Very occasionally the seeds can migrate to elsewhere in the body, and cause serious health problems.

Spaniels are the type of dogs most commonly affected by grass seeds but it can be any breed which possesses hairy ears and feet.

Grass seeds resemble tiny arrowheads and easily attach themselves to an animal’s fur before travelling in towards the skin of the victim’s body. As it burrows deep into the sensitive tissues it results in extreme pain, discomfort and often infection.

Birthstone of the monthAugust birthstone is Peridot. It is a popular light to deep green gemstone and can be set into a variety of jewellery. Peridot is found in a number of countries but historically came from St Johns Island on the Red Sea. Myth suggests that Peridot was often used as beneficial for poor eyesight! It's beautiful olive green colour lends itself well set into yellow or white gold jewellery.• Crown Jewellers, 15C North St, Bourne PE10 9AE 01778 393994. www.crown-jewellers.co.uk

he fortunes of our local river, the Bourne Eau, span the centuries, once powering several water mills, as a trade link, fishing venue and beauty spot. But in those past times, the waterway was wide and flowing and even used for boating trips on Sundays. The river begins at St Peter’s Pool where the water can be seen gushing out at its source and after running through the town, often underground, it crosses underneath Cherry Holt Road at Mays’ Sluice and out into the South Fen, joining the River Glen at Tongue End, its entire length being just under 3½ miles. Gangs of workers were recruited during the early 18th century to strengthen the banks and clear the weeds along the waterway to make it fit for navigation, and by 1743 the work had been completed to allow large boats upstream from the North Sea carrying cargoes of coal from Sunderland and wood from the Continent, returning laden with hides and grain. A massive warehouse was built in Eastgate for the storage of these commodities in transit and the river was soon capable of handling vessels with up to ten tons of cargo. The river trade had virtually disappeared by the end of the 19th century to be replaced first by rail and then by road transport and again the waterway fell into neglect although in the summer of 1897, when the town celebrated Queen

Victoria’s Diamond Jubilee, it was cleared sufficiently to allow decorated gondolas to take guests on pleasure trips. The river has also been popular with anglers, the fishing rights originally being under the jurisdiction of the Manor of Bourne Abbots but during the 19th century, they were acquired by Mr Thomas Baxter, a local businessman, and the following year the Bourne Angling Association was formed at a meeting in 1895 when he gave members permission to fish his waters which extended along the Bourne Eau from St Peter’s Pool to Tongue End and along the River Glen to Guthram Gowt. Fishing was extremely popular and the angling association flourished, the waters being well stocked with pike, perch, roach and dace that provided excellent sport for club members and visiting anglers. Today, the Bourne Eau is unused and neglected, particularly that once-busy stretch that runs behind Eastgate and out into the fen where the banks have become choked with weeds, the water covered in algae and a target for litter, the only thing moving on the surface being the occasional swan.
