• Summary: The purpose of this instructional PowerPoint is for the student to have a better understanding of the early explorers and how the Americas can to be.

• Learning Objective: Given websites of the early explorers and the routes that they took, the student will be able to research the explorers and then answer two questions in the PowerPoint over the material they read with a 100% accuracy.

• State or Common Core: 4.4 Trace the routes of early explorers and describe the early explorations of the Americas, including: Christopher Columbus, Ferdinand Magellan, Amerigo Vespucci, Robert de La Salle, Hernando de Soto, Henry Hudson, Jacques Cartier

Christopher Columbus

• Christopher Columbus was a Italian explorer that discovered the Americas for King Ferdinand of Spain in 1492.

• Goal: To find an alternative path to India.

• Outcome: He was wrong!

• Amerigo Vespucci was a Italian explorer that explored the coast of South and North America.

• Goal: To find Western route to Asia!

• Theory: The land that Columbus found was not Asia, but a new continent.

• Outcome: He was right! Because of this, America was named after him!

• Hernando de Soto was a Spanish explorer and conquistador that was known to have discovered the Mississippi River and his participation in the conquests of Central America and Peru.

• Theory: That the New World was rich with gold and silver that he could claim.

• Outcome: He was right, but died before it was discovered.
