Why Lifelong Learning?Wikipedia defines Lifelong Leaning as “the ongoing, voluntary, andself-motivated pursuit of knowledge for either personal or professionalreasons.” The term Lifelong Learning is itself descriptive becausehumans continue to learn throughout their lives. Most have heard theexpression that when we stop learning, we stop living. If learning isto be lifelong, the role played by institutions of higher educationbecomes ever more important. While acquiring formal education withthe goal of employment or advancement is critical to one’s careeraspirations, informal education, community services, not-for-creditprograms (all terms used for lifelong learning) keep communitymembers engaged, challenged, and connected. For this reason, institutions of higher education see the potential, and value theopportunity to offer lifelong learning classes as an integral part of theireducation mix.

As part of the Pasadena Area Community College District (PACCD),PCC Extension is committed to bringing its community membersclasses, workshops, training programs, and certificate culminatingcourses. Its commitment is to provide a mix of classes serving theinterests and needs of the community with the goal of encouragingand supporting lifelong learning.

As you turn the pages of the Spring Session catalog of offerings, consider trying something new (a language or an art class); learninga new pastime (chess or photography); discovering mysteriesthrough an online genealogy course; or starting or advancing in acareer by taking one of countless in-class or online career certificateprograms.
