Dear Parents,

Discover Spanish Life introduces young people to Spain, its life, its language, its cul‐ture and its history.

We do this by providing a unique mixture of experiences for our students. Living with everyday Spanish families they will truly see and experience the genuine Spain.

Our language program prepares students to deal with day‐to‐day situations and is reinforced through exciting workshops taught in Spanish, using vocabulary learned in a class setting.

Each day has an opportunity to enjoy the outdoors. We take advantage of the unique location which we call home, a beautiful bay, at the edge of cliffs, surrounded by hills. Surfing, sea kayaking, stand up paddle boarding, rock wall climbing, archery, hiking and zip lining are just a few of the outdoor activities locals enjoy.

We will also visit some of the greatest cities and monuments in the country. Ancient and storied castles, palaces, roman aqueducts and amphitheaters, walled cities, pub‐lic buildings, monasteries, cathedrals are found throughout the country and are a testament to Spain’s rich and varied history and culture.

Our commitment to young people’s growth goes beyond Spain, students will practice the skills needed to thrive in new and diverse international situations, in any country – which is essential knowledge to succeed in today’s world.

We thank you for considering Discover Spanish Life as a partner in your students’ education and are looking forward to hearing from you. Call us at any time with any questions on 1‐888‐655‐4102.

Regards,

Susana Capper and Helen Capper, Executive Directors

The Iberian Peninsula was populated by 1.2 million years ago and the largest groups inhabiting the Iberian Peninsula before the Roman conquest were the Iberians and the Celts. Starting in 210 BC it was conquered by the Romans, who lost power in 409. In the 8th century, nearly all of the Iberian Peninsula was conquered (711–718) by Moorish Muslim armies from North Africa. The Reconquista (re‐conquest) starting almost immediately, in  722, was the centuries‐long period in which Christian rule was re‐established over the Iberian Peninsula.  In 1492, Castile and Aragon ended the last remnant of a 781‐year presence of Islamic rule in Iberia. This year 1492 also marked the arrival of Christopher Columbus in the New World, a voyage funded by Queen Isabella of Spain. Through exploration and conquest or royal marriage alliances and inheritance, the Spanish Empire expanded to include vast areas in the Americas, Asia, Europe and Africa, it was the first empire of which it was said that the sun never set.  In the 17th century, Spain went into decline and by the late 19th century Spain had lost the last of its once vast colonial empire outside of North Africa.
