John baptised people in the RiverJordan. Being baptised showedthey wanted to be washed cleanfrom all their sins, ready to welcome King Jesus.

Don’t get too down about it! We all give in to temptationsometimes, but it doesn’t stopGod from loving us. Check outthis brilliant verse...1 Corinthians 10 v 13 (Not surehow to find it? Go back 4 pagesto “How to use Discover” )

We’re going totake a breakfrom Mark’sbook to checkout two greatpsalms in themiddle of theBible.

King David (who fought Goliath)wrote Psalm 19. In it he says thatwe can find out more about Godjust by looking up in the sky!

Read Psalm 19 v 1-4What does the sky show us aboutGod? Go back one letter to findout (B=A, C=B, D=C etc).

Go outside or look out of the window. What does the sky look like right now?

God made all of that! It shows ushow amazing He is. Sun, clouds, rain, stars, moon, lightning, God made it all!

Read verses 4-6The sun is a picture of how greatGod is. It’s millions of milesaway, but it is sooooo bright andpowerful. God made the sun, so imagine how much more powerful God is!

Positive pprraayyeerr pointers14Psalm 119v 145-149Day 14

We’re still inPsalm 119, taking an in-depth look at God’s Word,the Bible.

Today is a code-breaker special.

The guy who wrote Psalm 119didn’t just say a super-quickprayer and then rush for hisbreakfast! He had something toask God that he really neededthe Lord to answer. See how hewent about it...

Read Psalm 119 v 145-149What did he do?

His prayers were not a bored, quiet mumble. He put his heartinto it. He was so desperate forGod to hear Him that He even got up in the night to pray!

What did he call out to God?

He asked God to save him fromhis enemies. And we can ask God to help us too.

Why was he sure that God would answer his prayer (v149)?

He knew that he didn’t deservean answer from God. But heknew how incredibly kind andloving God is. God loves us andanswers our prayers!

It was still dark, before sunrise! There must have been a goodreason for getting up so early.Find it at the end of verse 35.

Jesus wanted to speak to God,His Father. That was much moreimportant than sleeping.

Read verses 38-39Preaching was massively important to Jesus. He wanted totell everyone to turn away fromtheir sin and turn to God (v15).We should want to do that too.

But one leper had a real surprise. He met someone who didn’t run away from Him.

Read Mark 1 v 40-42Use the code to reveal what Jesus did.

Jesus touched this man andcured Him! Jesus showed He had power over sickness. Butthere was a price to pay...

Read verses 43-45Crowds flocked to Jesus to seemore miracles. But that wasn’twhy Jesus came. He came topreach (see v38) and tell peoplethe good news. But now He hadto stay away from the townsbecause of the crowds.

LEPROSY FACT FILEIn Bible times, leprosy was anasty, incurable disease thatwas easy to catch. It madeyour skin go all lumpy andhorrible. Or even drop off.

Nobody wanted to be friendswith a leper, in case theycaught it too. So everyonekept clear whenever they saw a leper coming.

Read verse 5What did Jesus say to the man?

If the man needed to walk, whydid Jesus talk to Him about sin?

Jesus claimed to have the powerto forgive sins! This upset someof the religious leaders...Read verses 6-7

They couldn’t believe that Jesuswas claiming to have the samepower as God. But Jesus is God,so He proved it to them.

Read verses 8-12Which of these is easiest to say?

It’s easier to say A because noone can see if it’s true or not! So, to show that He does havepower to forgive sins, Jesus alsosaid B! And then He healed theman in front of everyone!

Jesus proved that He has thepower to forgive sins.

Dinner with a ssiinnnneerrGo back one letter to reveal afamous phrase.

Sounds obvious? Well it wasn’t to the Jewish leaders.

Read Mark 2 v 13-16Who did Jesus call to follow Him?

Levi was also known as Matthew(the disciple who wrote the Biblebook called Matthew). He was atax collector who worked for thehated Romans.

The Pharisees were horrified that Jesus made friends with taxcollectors and other people theydidn’t respect. They thought Heshould hang out with “good” people like them!

But what’s that got to do withsick people and doctors?Read verse 17

Jesus knows that people whothink they’re good enough won’task Him (the sin doctor) to forgive them. But people whorealise how sinful they are willturn to Jesus for forgiveness. And He’ll cure their sin problem!

21FFaasstt and furiousRead Mark 2 v 18-19The Pharisees and the followersof John the Baptist were fasting.

But there was no reason whyJesus’ disciples should fast.Jesus compared Himself to abridegroom (v19). His discipleswere like wedding guests. Theywere so happy to be with Jesus(the bridegroom). Why shouldthey be sad and go without food?

Read verse 20Jesus knew that He would soondie. When that happened, His followers would be really sad. Then they’d fast. (Yet their sorrowwouldn’t last long — God wouldraise Jesus back to life!)

Read verses 21-22and draw what’s missing.

You wouldn’tsew a new

• If you patch up old clothes withnew material, they’ll rip!

• If you pour new wine into brit-tle old wineskins, they’ll split.

If you try to fit the message ofJesus into a human set of rules,it won’t work. The Phariseessaid: You must keep our rules toplease God. Jesus said: Repent(turn away from sin) and believethe good news.

You can’t become a Christian bykeeping rules or trying to begood. Only by trusting Jesus toforgive your sin.

20Mark 2 v 18-22Day 20

Ever been toa wedding?

Imagine if therewere no food, not even a wedding cake!

FASTING is not eating foodfor a while. It was often asign of being sad. In thosedays many Jews fasted twicea week!

The message about Jesus isthat He came to RESCUE us.He died in our place, so thatwe can be friends with God.

But the Pharisees said thatpeople had to keep a set ofrules to be friends with God.

The two messages don’t mix! Thank God that you don’t needto keep a set of rules to be Hisfriend. Thank Him for sendingJesus as your Rescuer.

CCoorrnn on the jobBut the Pharisees added loads of extra rules of their own. Theylisted 39 things you must not doon the Sabbath!

Read Mark 2 v 23-24Jesus’ disciples were really hungry so they picked some cornto eat. The Pharisees’ rules saidthis was wrong.

Read verses 25-26Jesus reminded the Phariseeswhat King David had done whenhe was starving (it’s in 1 Samuel21 v 1-6). God didn’t tell David itwas wrong, so it can’t have been!

Read verses 27-28and fill in the vowels (aeiou) toshow what Jesus said (v27).

God didn’t say that people should not eat, walk, cook or have funon the Sabbath. If you keepSunday as a day of rest, it’s OK to do necessary stuff, and evendo things you enjoy!

JESUS is Lord of the Sabbath. So we should give our rest days(as well as our work/school days)over to pleasing Him.
