Philosophy and Traditions

Welcome to Bishop Carroll High School

A warm welcome to returning and new families to our school. It is our hope that your

family will experience a year of spiritual, academic and social growth.

Catholic schools exist to support parents’ values and beliefs and to allow children to

practice those values in an environment based on gospel values and the spiritual journey

of which we are all a part. With the guidance of the Holy Spirit, mutual trust and support,

we can meet any challenges and continue a tradition of caring and excellence at Bishop

Carroll High School.

This Student-Parent Handbook contains important information on school procedures and

services, course requirements for a High School Diploma and graduation, expectations

for the Alexander Rutherford Scholarship as well as the school calendar. Students and

parents are highly encouraged to read this information.

If you have questions or concerns, please do not hesitate to contact your Teacher Advisor.

We thank you for your continued interest and support in Bishop Carroll High School.

Bishop Carroll’s Mission Statement

Bishop Carroll High School is a unique educational Catholic community offering

continuous progress in a personalized and individualized learning environment that

supports, challenges and empowers students to take responsibility for learning and

personal growth.

Bishop Carroll’s Vision Statement

We, the Bishop Carroll High School Catholic Community, commit to providing a

student-centered educational journey which fosters authentic personal growth. We

challenge each individual to be a lifelong learner, to embrace a passion for life and to

share his or her gifts for the benefit of our global community.

The Bishop Carroll Coat Of Arms

The Coat of Arms is a version of the original Coat of Arms of Bishop Francis P.

Carroll.

The left half represents the Diocese of Calgary and is adopted from the Provincial

Coat of Arms. Represented are wheat fields moving up to the mountains to the

blue Alberta sky. The Blessed Virgin, to whom Calgary’s Cathedral is dedicated,

is symbolized by a star.

The right half represents Bishop Francis Carroll. The forearm holding the cross stands

for the Bishop’s patron saint, St. Francis of Assisi. The pierced heart is the symbol of St.

Page 5: Discover Personalized Self-Directed Learning! · Self-Directed Learning What sets Bishop Carroll apart from other high schools is our unique, personalized, self-directed learning

5

Augustine, patron saint of the seminary where Bishop Carroll spent nearly all his priestly

life, both as a student and professor.

The hat at the top represents the residential Bishop. The three rows of tassels indicate his

rank. The coat is impaled on a Cross, common for a residential Bishop, and the Miter and

Crosier are also found on a Bishop’s Coat of Arms.

The Motto

The motto comes from Luke 24:19. In Latin it reads "Mane Nobiscum, Domine"

which means: "Stay with us, O Lord".

Philosophy

Bishop Carroll High School has been offering students in Calgary and the surrounding

area a program of individualized instruction since 1971. Our school has a unique

approach to education and our most attractive feature is our ability to adapt; flexibility is

the key to our proven success.

As a Catholic school community, Bishop Carroll is proud to be a member of the Catholic

Community of Caring initiative. Based on the values of caring, responsibility, trust,

respect and family, this initiative allows for a respectful and friendly school environment,

rooted in Catholic values. Since the school’s opening, our motto, “Stay With Us, O

Lord”, has reflected these values. As a Catholic Community of Caring School, we

recognize that there is more to an education than academics.

Self-Directed Learning

What sets Bishop Carroll apart from other high schools is our unique, personalized, self-

directed learning environment, which puts students in the driver’s seat of their

educational journey. Here, students have the freedom to customize a learning program

they feel is best suited for their unique goals, abilities and interests. With the guidance of

a Teacher Advisor and their parents, the student will choose the program and courses

they want to follow. Students can then progress through these courses at a personalized

rate reflecting their individual needs and learning pace. Although students study at their

own pace, they must still follow the curriculum set out by Alberta Education and must

fulfill the requirements mandated by the province to receive their Alberta High School

Diploma.

The main advantage of self-directed learning is that it empowers the student to take more

responsibility and interest in decisions that will affect their education. Students will

graduate from Bishop Carroll feeling a unique sense of ownership in their diploma and

having had ‘hands-on’ control of their learning.

Guided and Supported

While Bishop Carroll provides freedom and flexibility to its students, this does not mean

that they go through their education without guidance or support. We have a strong and

effective teacher advisory system in place to help students succeed. Each new student is

assigned to a Teacher Advisor who will continue to guide, motivate and advise the

student until graduation. Learning goals are then accomplished with the continuous

Page 6: Discover Personalized Self-Directed Learning! · Self-Directed Learning What sets Bishop Carroll apart from other high schools is our unique, personalized, self-directed learning

6

support and guidance from their teacher-advisor who is in constant contact in regards to

all subjects in order to monitor the student’s progress throughout their high school career.

Grade 10 students (and those new to Bishop Carroll High School) enroll in our Self-

Directed Learning course which helps students orientate themselves to Bishop Carroll in

the first few months of school.

Bishop Carroll Cultural Principles

Bishop Carroll High School is a Catholic community where members serve God and one

another in a tolerant and compassionate manner. As a "Community of Caring", we

uphold the value of family in an atmosphere of honesty, fairness, respect and trust. By

emphasizing such values we foster a sense of responsibility and integrity.

Bishop Carroll High School is committed to promoting collaboration through open

communication among its stakeholders.

Bishop Carroll High School strives to be a safe and nurturing environment fostering

emotional and physical security. Through discipline and self-control, all individuals are

expected to be accountable, responsible, punctual and dependable.

The Five Pillars of our Program

1. Independent Study

All material for courses is assembled into self-study packages known as Learning Guides.

These guides tell students exactly what they must learn, show them how to learn it and

prepare them for testing and evaluation. Some activities that are included as part of the

Learning Guides are: reading books, viewing videos, responding to questions and

assignments, completing self-tests, conducting experiments and various other educational

activities depending on the subject.

The Learning Guides also provide many opportunities for students to collaborate with

each other by directing them to engage in team work, seminars and group presentations

which are aimed at enhancing the student’s learning.

Independent learning is supported through one-to-one consultations with teachers that are

subject area specialists. They are always available and willing to meet with students to

help them achieve their learning guide objectives.

The ultimate goal of independent study is to foster a sense of ownership of the knowledge

learned. If successful, the student will understand how to learn, which is an important

skill for post-secondary education.

2. Teacher Advisor (TA) Role

In Bishop Carroll’s unique learning environment students must exercise a considerable

amount of responsibility in order to be successful. However, students are not alone in this

responsibility. Their success is also the responsibility of their Teacher Advisor who

works with them to develop an academic plan which reflects the student’s unique needs

and goals.

Page 7: Discover Personalized Self-Directed Learning! · Self-Directed Learning What sets Bishop Carroll apart from other high schools is our unique, personalized, self-directed learning

7

Each of our students are assigned a TA who they will remain with until graduation.

Students will meet with Teacher Advisors twice daily and for a longer period every week.

It is the TA’s duty to help the student set goals, motivate them, make sure they are

keeping on track with their learning program and stay in touch with parents. The TA will

also record learning progress daily and will then issue reports to parents regularly so

parents can stay informed about the amount and quality of their child’s work.

Because each student remains with the same Teacher Advisor for their entire high school

career, this fosters a strong and productive working relationship between the two.

A TA will not only motivate and support your child, but they will also become a mentor

and someone who genuinely cares about your child’s education and future.

3. Continuous Progress

Students set their own individual pace for learning which allows for continuous progress.

This means they are not wasting time waiting for other classmates to catch up, or writing

tests before they have mastered a concept because they are trying to keep up with the

teacher’s pace.

Continuous progress also allows your child to begin and finish courses at any time during

the school year. At our school, we recognize that no two students will take the same

amount of time to complete their course objectives. We remove time restraints and

instead put the student in control of their education. As well, a student’s learning does

not suffer due to extended absences or illness, they simply continue their lessons where

they left off.

This approach provides the opportunity for students to take the time they need to master

course objectives. Through continuous progress, students get a true sense of their own

strengths and weaknesses and are given the power to tailor their learning programs with

these in mind.

4. Individualized Schedules

At Bishop Carroll, there is no master schedule, there are no regular classes or school

bells. Students move freely to Resource Centres accessing subject area support, choose

to attend seminars or tutorials for additional direct instruction and may sign up for

structured sequenced activity sessions (Music, Drama, Health Fitness and Recreation,

Math) and take exams when they are ready for them. While this system provides them

with more flexibility and freedom, it also demands greater responsibility and dedication.

The outcome is a personalized education program that is fun and rewarding.

Students’ needs change as they progress through their education, and their schedule is

able to change as well to meet these needs. However, changes in course selections are

not at the sole discretion of the student. The Teacher Advisor is consulted at every step

to ensure the student remains accountable for each decision and stays on the path to meet

their course objectives.

The flexibility of individualized scheduling also allows students to pursue other

opportunities and interests off-campus, providing a well-rounded education. For example

they are able to participate in mentoring programs, co-operative education and field

placements all without having to miss a class or test.

5. Differentiated Staffing

Your child will have support resources available to help them succeed throughout their

high school career at Bishop Carroll. Along with Teacher Advisors, there are teachers

Page 8: Discover Personalized Self-Directed Learning! · Self-Directed Learning What sets Bishop Carroll apart from other high schools is our unique, personalized, self-directed learning

8

and school assistants who are subject experts as well as clerical assistants available to

answer questions.

Individual help is always available to students and additional staff allow teachers to

spend more quality time assisting students.

Roles and Responsibilities

Students succeed at Bishop Carroll through the support and guidance of several people in

our school community. Everyone has different roles and responsibilities but the goal is

still the same: to provide each student with a personalized and individualized program

that allows them the opportunity to succeed. It is important that every member of the

community understand their role and the key part they play in your education.

Students

Accept responsibility for your own learning and progress.

Set and achieve long and short-term goals for your education and personal

development. Be aware of course completion timelines (i.e. course tracking) for

grade 10, 11, and 12.

Acquire the habits and skills necessary for success, for example: awareness of

strengths and learning style, recognition of areas of need, ability to acquire

assistance, development of strong study skills, effective communication skills, time

management, planning skills, motivation and self discipline, etc.

Be accountable for your choices and accept the consequences of your choices in

regards to your education and those around you.

Be a positive member in the school community through demonstrating the values

promoted by our Catholic Community of Caring, for example: respect and accept all

individuals, work on developing trusting relationships, care for the well-being of

those around you, etc. Actively participate in liturgies and masses.

Know, respect and follow the routines and procedures set out by the school, for

example: daily attendance, check in and out, leave the school only with permission,

attend TA appointments, use of BRIGHTSPACE for planning and recording

progress, take a 30 minute lunch break, wear your photo ID at all times as you need it

for testing and resources and to ensure the safety of all in our school community.

Become involved in the life of the school in order to enjoy your high school

experience and help develop a strong school community. School and community

involvement is helpful when applying for scholarships and post secondary programs.

Parents

Work collaboratively with the school and Teacher Advisor to help your child develop

their educational plans and succeed at Bishop Carroll.

Support and help your child with decision-making.

Help monitor progress through the student agenda, green slips, progress reports and

daily communication with your child.

Know how to navigate Brightspace and verify your son/daughter’s marks.

Develop a positive rapport with your TA and maintain ongoing contact. A parent

Safety Drills

Lockdowns/School Evacuation Regulations require schools to practice and simulate building evacuations (fire drills) as

well as lockdowns. These drills occur at various times throughout the year. It is

important that we have full cooperation from the students and parents during these drills

or actual events. In the case of a LOCKDOWN or EVACUATION, it is necessary

that all parties (students, parents, staff) refrain from using cell phones for texting

and calling. Parents should not call the school for information or make their way to the

school. Any of these actions could negatively impact the Emergency Response Team and

the overall safety of the school. Information would be available through the main CCSD

telephone number 403-500-2000.

Fire Alarms When the alarm sounds, all staff and students must move quickly to designated areas

outside the school.

If ordered to evacuate the school, students and staff will follow instructions as posted

in each room. Muster points are located on ID tags.

Academics

Understanding the System

Learning Guides & Seminars

Each course is made up of learning guides that lay out the expectations and procedures to

complete one or more units of work. The number of units is clearly labelled on each

guide.

A learning guide may stand alone, or as in most cases, is designed to interplay with

seminars, textual resources, and/or electronic resources.

Teachers are available to help students make their way through learning guides

individually or in group seminars.

Multiple seminars will be offered. Teacher(s) will offer options in resolving seminar

schedule conflicts.

Students should become familiar with an entire learning guide before proceeding to work

on it. They should understand what work in the guide is suggested for their own studying

purposes or practice, what work will be taken in for marking, and what culminating

activity (such as a test or major assignment) is expected. Students should have a good

idea of how the learning guide fits in with the rest of the course in terms of weighting and

should know whether there are seminars which support the guide and whether these are

mandatory or optional. If there are seminars, students should be well aware of when they

are offered and when students can register for them.

If in doubt about the contents of a learning guide or the expectations, students should

contact the teacher for further clarification.

Green Slips

Name of Slip Colour Content / Purpose Green Slip Green Used to track completion of components of

Learning Guides

Provides information re: mark achieved and unit

worth of a particular learning guide.

Greenslip information is recorded on the progress

report.

Students are encouraged to keep their greenslips

and confirm their marks on BRIGHTSPACE.

Parents are encouraged to track the greenslips on

the progress reports you receive from the TA

Starting a Course

Continuous progress allow students to begin a course at any point in the year. Students

do not have to worry about getting into a class.

Students can start the course when ready and make this decision in consultation with

parents and TA.

Page 20: Discover Personalized Self-Directed Learning! · Self-Directed Learning What sets Bishop Carroll apart from other high schools is our unique, personalized, self-directed learning

20

Course Outlines

Course outlines provide important information about the content of a course, how it is

organized, and about the course’s assessment particulars.

They will usually provide details about how the units of work are broken down into

learning guides and they may provide information about how seminars are integrated into

the course.

Course outlines are key tools in planning and tracking your progress.

Tracking sheets which provide suggested timelines are available for every course.

Course outlines and tracking sheets are available on the BRIGHTSPACE platform.

As well, a student’s learning does

not suffer due to extended absences or illness; they simply continue their lessons where

they left off.

This approach provides the opportunity for students to take the time they need to master

course objectives. Through continuous progress, students get a true sense of their own

strengths and weaknesses and are given the power to tailor their learning programs with

these in mind.

Course Work Cut-Offs

Diploma cut-off is set for students to have all of their course work done in their diploma

exam courses. This allows teachers time to mark their work and submit marks to Alberta

Education to allow students to write their diploma exams. This is important for students

planning to write diploma exams.

Cut-off in June is set for students to have all their course work done in all subject areas.

This allows teachers time to mark their work and submit marks to Alberta Education for

the end of the year. Any work completed after this date is to be handed-in in September.

Deadlines related to course completions are to be adhered to by all students.

Course Completion Expectations

For all students in grade 10 in the 2016/17 school year, it is the expectation that a course

will be completed within one school year (10 school months). Any extenuating

circumstances can be discussed with the student’s Teacher Advisor.

Progress Report

Bishop Carroll’s self-directed planning, and unit/course completion consists of two

unique tools.

Our Progress Report is updated daily and summarizes a student’s individual progress

through his/her self-directed program. It is sent home electronically at least 10 times a

year which allows for consistent and collaborative communication between parents,

students and teacher advisors regarding a student’s individual goals, expectations and

achievement.

Our Course Completion summarizes each student’s personalized academic goals, which

are established in consultation with their Teacher Advisor, and his/her progress in

completing the requirements to graduate from Bishop Carroll High School with an

Alberta High School Diploma while planning for future educational endeavors.

Unit Production Guidelines Although the academic program at Bishop Carroll is completely individualized and there is a

great amount of flexibility in the scheduling and use of time, minimum expectations for unit

production is recommended for each student. This should be discussed with your Teacher

Advisor and your parents.

Homework Homework is any task assigned by teachers that students complete during non-school

hours. The Calgary Catholic School District recognizes well-planned homework in

Grades 3-12 can be a meaningful part of a student’s learning. Time spent on homework

may vary from one student to the next. Parents who have concerns with homework

expectations should contact their child’s TA or the school principal to discuss the

situation and the options available. You can find more information about the District’s

homework regulation at www.cssd.ab.ca/files/regulations/IKB.pdf

Page 23: Discover Personalized Self-Directed Learning! · Self-Directed Learning What sets Bishop Carroll apart from other high schools is our unique, personalized, self-directed learning

23

Brightspace Brightspace is a web based course management system that is available to students and

parents 24/7. Bishop Carroll utilizes Brightspace to deliver important information and

educational course content for all courses taught at the school. The website at

https://dl.cssd.ab.ca/ is a secure and monitored environment in which teachers are able to

present course outlines and extensive learning materials such as learning guides for

students to use in their self-directed learning. Students self-enroll in courses in

consultation with parents and Teacher Advisors. The Grades section of each course gives

course completion progress as well as marks for completed assignments. Information in

the Grades is the official record of marks. In addition, students are able to submit

assignments via a drop box if enabled in the course. Students each receive a unique

username and password; parents are encouraged to use their child’s username and

password to stay informed and monitor academic progress.

Self-Directed Learning Self-Directed Learning 15 is a 3 credit course offered at Bishop Carroll High School to

support students who are new to the self-directed learning environment. The goals of the

course are to help students grow as self-directed learners and to assist students in

attaining their academic goals. The course is designed on a self-study model of

independent learning guides and incorporates individual work, seminars and large group

presentations. Topics addressed include self-awareness as a learner, time-management,

note taking, critical reading, motivation and procrastination, exam preparation, exam

writing and exam anxiety. Participation in this course is strongly recommended for all

students as they transition to our learning environment.

Bring Your Own Device (BYOD) Bishop Carroll invites students to use computer technology to support their learning in

our self-directed school. You are strongly encouraged to bring your own device (BYOD)

to Bishop Carroll High School. Students may use their own laptops to complete written

response tests using Quest A Plus. Quest A Plus is an online word processing program

that is also used for the English and Social Diploma exams. Students use their laptops to

plan their daily schedule in Google Apps Calendar, communicate with other students and

staff using Google e-mail, practice music in SmartMusic, access course materials through

BRIGHTSPACE (a learning management system), listen to audio clips and watch

relevant videos. Students will also create presentations, documents, videos and other

projects using social media resources. If you are bringing in your own device, consider

affordability, wireless capability, durability (students are hard on computers) and

portability. Popular software choices include the educational version of Microsoft Office,

Openoffice (downloaded for free from Openoffice.org) or iWorks if you own an Apple

Mac. You must have anti-virus software on your PC.

All students must abide by the District Acceptable Use policy and be a responsible digital

citizen. Working together, families and Bishop Carroll staff can help ensure that the

Internet is used appropriately as a valuable educational tool. For Internet safety tips and

information pertaining to safe and responsible online practices visit

Academic Honesty and Integrity Agreement

The aim of Bishop Carroll High School is to develop an environment in which each

student has the opportunity to achieve academic excellence. An essential element in a

climate of learning is intellectual honesty. No student should receive an unfair advantage

because of dishonesty in completing assignments or taking tests or examinations. With

that pursuit in mind, the first rule of the school is that cheating in any form will not be

tolerated.

Plagiarism

Our School District’s current faith theme comes from the book of Micah, and is a simple

formula for doing God’s will, “…to do justice, and to love kindness, and to walk humbly

with your God,” (6:8). Part of “doing justice” is to always do the right thing. Having

academic integrity and acting in an honest manner is the right thing, is important, and is

taken seriously by secondary schools, Alberta Education, and post-secondary

institutions. In essence, academic integrity is honesty; copying and/or borrowing parts of

another person’s work without crediting the author is plagiarism. Likewise, providing

one’s work to another student that is submitted for assessment is also considered

plagiarism and both parties are subject to discipline. Failing to credit the source of a

quotation, copying ideas from others and claiming the idea as your own, whether you

change the wording or not, and turning in someone else’s work as your own are all

examples of plagiarism.

If you are working on a course with another student you may help each other to

understand the concepts, but when you are submitting your Learning Guide/project they

must be completed in your own words. Handing in the exact same answers is plagiarism.

Why is Plagiarism Not Acceptable?

You are taking credit for work or ideas that are not your own.

It is dishonest and reflects poorly on your character.

It does not reflect whether or not you understand the learning outcomes.

You are not learning the skills you need to succeed in life.

Plagiarism may have serious consequences for a student’s academic

standing and reputation.

Here at Bishop Carroll, work deemed plagiarized through the evaluation of a

teacher may receive a mark of zero. Further disciplinary measures are possible, at

the discretion of administration and in consultation with the course teacher.

Proper formats for citing sources are available in the writer’s handbook available at our

school. In addition, examples of proper formats for citations may be viewed online:

If you are not sure if what you are doing is plagiarism please contact your teacher

advisor with any questions regarding this policy.

Page 25: Discover Personalized Self-Directed Learning! · Self-Directed Learning What sets Bishop Carroll apart from other high schools is our unique, personalized, self-directed learning

25

Plagiarism is deliberate dishonesty and includes, but is not limited to, the following

forms:

Exams and Tests Impersonating a candidate in an exam or test.

Copying from another student, or making information available to another student

knowing that this is to be submitted as the borrower's own work.

Giving students information about the content of a test they have not yet written

knowing they will use it to their advantage.

Taking unauthorized materials into an exam or test.

Use of Unauthorized Material

Submission of an assignment or essay written by someone else.

Submission of excerpts, ranging from a single sentence to lengthy passages,

quoted from internet sources.

Laboratories

Copying a laboratory report or allowing someone else to copy one’s report.

Using another student's data unless specifically allowed by the teacher.

Allowing someone else to do the laboratory work.

Faking laboratory data

Essays and Assignments

Submitting an essay written in whole or in part by someone else as one’s own

work.

Preparing an essay or assignment for submission by another student.

Copying an essay or assignment or allowing one’s essay or assignment to be

copied by someone else.

Using direct quotations or large sections of paraphrased material without

acknowledgement.

Buying and/or selling of essays or assignments.

Individual teachers or departments will point out areas of specific concern not

covered above. Students should be encouraged to consult teachers in case of doubt.

Plagiarism should be distinguished from co-operation and collaboration. Often,

students are permitted or expected to work on assignments collectively, and to

present their results either collectively or individually. This is not a problem so

long as it is clearly understood whose work is being presented, for example, by way

of formal acknowledgment.

Teachers should inform students as to what constitutes acceptable workmanship,

proper form citation and use of sources.

All students will sign an Academic Honesty and Integrity Agreement.

Procedures Students shall not be penalized for suspected plagiarism. It is the responsibility of the

teacher(s) to demonstrate the accuracy of the charge.

Page 26: Discover Personalized Self-Directed Learning! · Self-Directed Learning What sets Bishop Carroll apart from other high schools is our unique, personalized, self-directed learning

26

Penalties The penalty for plagiarism or cheating on a test, exam, final exam or other assignment

may be a reduction of the grade on the assignment, test or examination; reduction of the

final grade; failure of the course; or, such penalty as the teacher and administration may

reasonably deem appropriate. In some circumstances plagiarism could result in a formal

school suspension. A student who allows work to be copied will be subject to the

same penalties. The penalty for second offences shall be more severe.

Alexander Rutherford Scholarships

The Alexander Rutherford Scholarships are sponsored by the Alberta

Scholarship Programs. Their purpose is to recognize and reward academic achievement at

the senior high school level and to encourage students to pursue post-secondary studies.

Eligible students can earn up to $2,500. Applicants must be a Canadian Citizen or

Permanent Resident and an Alberta resident; and plan to enroll or be enrolled full-time in

a post-secondary program or apprenticeship program. A student must have a minimum

combined average based on five designated courses in at least one grade: Grade 10, 11 or

12. The minimum average, value of the award, and courses that can be used depend on

the year the student graduated. For more information, visit their website.

http://alis.alberta.ca/et/fo/scholarships/info.html?EK=11

Student Standards & Behaviours

I.D. Cards Bishop Carroll is an open school with lots of activity during the day. To help ensure the

security of the community, students must wear Bishop Carroll photo ID cards on school

issued lanyards at all times. These must be worn around the neck. Without their ID card

being visibly displayed, students will not have access to the testing centre, subject area

resources and seminars.

In the event of a lost ID card, the student has a week in which to locate it. During this

time he/she makes work arrangements with his/her T-A. If the ID card is not located, the

student must purchase a new one from the main office before the week expires.

All students must wear a lanyard with photo ID. Each year, a particular colour designates

which students leave early for activities outside of school (i.e. music lessons, work

experience, Academy learning at CCSD schools, etc.)

Visitors and Trespassing All visitors must register at the Main Office upon arrival. Approved visitors are to wear

visitor I.D. tags, available from the Main Office. Unauthorized visitors, including

students not registered at Bishop Carroll High School, will be asked to leave immediately

and could be charged with trespassing. Bishop Carroll students who choose to enter

other schools without permission during school hours may be charged with trespassing by

the school they are visiting.

Laser Pointers Laser pointers are not permitted at school as they may cause serious damage when

pointed in the direction of someone's eyes. Students using pointers will have them

confiscated and may face suspension.

Cell Phones Cell phones must be used in a discrete and respectful manner. Students may make voice

calls in the main foyer and on level four directly in front of the Carroll Shoppe. Students

may not use cell phones or digital devices during presentations or seminars. Cell phones

are not permitted in the testing centre.

Page 28: Discover Personalized Self-Directed Learning! · Self-Directed Learning What sets Bishop Carroll apart from other high schools is our unique, personalized, self-directed learning

28

Personal Music Devices Personal music devices are to be used with headphones in designated areas only. These

items should not be left unattended as the school is not responsible for lost or stolen

items. As a courtesy to all students and staff earphones should not be in ears when

seeking assistance or when transitioning in the hallways.

Skateboards/Hoverboards/Rollerblades Skateboarding is not allowed on school property. Boards must be stored in lockers.

Smoking The possession or the use of tobacco products is prohibited for all students on campus

and prohibited by Alberta law for all individuals under the age of 18. Students who fail

to comply will face disciplinary action.

Substance Abuse Possession, use, or trafficking in alcohol, illegal drugs or any other abusive substances

will not be tolerated at school or any school sponsored activity. The use of alcohol by

minors and the use of illegal drugs are against the law. As a result the appropriate law

enforcement officers may be involved and charges laid. Such infractions will result in

immediate suspension and possible expulsion.

Behavior Code The display of courtesy and good manners reflects an attitude of respect for self and

others. Students are encouraged to pursue their own personal goals as long as they do not

disrupt the learning or work of others.

All faculty, support staff and students are expected to show the utmost tolerance and

understanding when dealing with others. The policy of the Calgary Catholic Schools

states that, "Any form of personal harassment which is intended to or does diminish the

personal dignity and self-worth of any individual is prohibited."

Harassment is any behavior, verbal or non-verbal, that causes another person to feel

intimidated, offended, embarrassed or humiliated. Harassment denies the dignity and

respect of individuals. It hampers efforts to create a caring, Christian community and

interferes with a student's right to feel safe and secure within the school environment.

Each report of harassment will be investigated by administration and will be considered

on an individual basis with consequences varying from in-school suspensions to

expulsion.

It is expected that all students will:

Attend school regularly, be punctual and attend to their learning.

Conform to the rules of the school.

Attend scheduled Teacher Advisor appointments.

Be accountable to the administration, teachers and support staff for their conduct in

the school, on the school premises during school hours and after school hours at

school authorized activities and when wearing school apparel.

Cooperate with the caretaking and cafeteria staff regarding the maintenance of the

building and the appearance of the cafeteria and school premises.

Respect the property of the school and report signs of property damage which result

from carelessness or malicious intent. Damage will be paid for by the individual or

group responsible.

29

The following will not be tolerated:

Gangs, gang activity

Incidents involving harassment, hazing or intimidation

Verbal or physical acts of violence

Possession and/or use of any instrument (weapons) potentially used to inflict harm

Air Rifles/Guns The district prohibits students from possessing weapons or engaging in violent or

threatening acts on school property, and at school sponsored functions and activities.

"Weapon" means any object, device, or instrument designed or through its use is capable

of threatening or producing bodily harm to oneself or others. By this definition, air

rifles/guns are therefore considered weapons. As it is challenging to visually identify

these weapons as air rifles/guns, school staff, Calgary Police Services and the RCMP will

likely respond in the same manner as they would an actual rifle/gun. For the safety of all

students, staff and visitors in the school, these items are not allowed on school property

or at school-related activities under any circumstance.

Dress Code Students must wear clothing that is appropriate for educational activities in which they

will participate and that will not cause a disruption to the educational process.

Specifically:

Footwear must be worn at all times indoors

Clothes must be clean and in good repair

Outerwear (i.e. coats, jackets, etc.) sunglasses, hats or headgear may not be worn

indoors

Clothes must not display slogans or advertising which is controversial, obscene,

offensive and/or depicting drugs or alcohol

Gang related clothing or accessories including but not limited to bandanas, or other

symbols, emblems or insignias, may not be worn.

Any clothing, jewelry or accessories, which create a safety or health concern, or,

Student Photographs Student pictures will be taken on September 1, 2 and 6. All students are expected to have

their pictures taken for the yearbook and student ID tags. Student ID tags are used as

resource passes and testing cards. Grade 12 graduation pictures are taken later in the

year.

Parking Students and parents are reminded that our parking lot has 210 spaces for student

parking. We will be accepting applications for parking passes in the first three days of

school. A limited number will be sold, one pass per family only. The cost of a parking

pass will be $60.00 for the year. To be eligible to purchase an annual pass the following

Distance a student needs to travel to get to Bishop Carroll

Special circumstances or commitments a student may have

For students who may need to drive only occasionally, we will have a small number of

daily parking passes available for purchase. These passes will be available through our

business window and must be purchased in advance. The cost will be $2.00/day.

In order to provide security for student and staff vehicles, and student supervision,

students are to be in the parking lot only if they are coming or leaving the school grounds.

The parking lot is not to be used as a lunch area, a meeting area, or a place to study. Be

respectful of caretaking staff and your school by putting litter in the cans provided.

Lockers Students will be assigned a locker. No change of locks or lockers is allowed without

TA permission. Only school-issued locks are to be used on any locker. Lock

combinations should be kept confidential if the locker is to be a secure place for student

property.

Student Agenda The main use of a student agenda is to assist students with their planning skills. Students

soon find that some kind of a planner is required to help organize their schedule, and to

discuss this with their Teacher Advisor at their weekly TA appointments. Students may

choose to use an electronic agenda on their laptop, cell phone or other personally owned

device.

Student Accident Insurance Insurance coverage is mandatory for all students participating in competitive sports. It is

highly recommended for potential accident risk situations such as field trips, intramural

sports and other educational activities. Forms for the School Board plan are available

from the main office and the TA. It is advisable to obtain coverage at the beginning of the

year.
