This Four Stage Step by Step Guide will assist you in discovering your career.

To gain the maximum benefit from this process we recommend you always commence with Your Greatest Strengths Report, and then move to the Career Development Report, Career Options and finally the Career Enjoyment Report.

Please resist the temptation to move directly to the Career Options. 1. Your Greatest Strengths Report: This report builds understanding and self-esteem. The positive

narrative of this report provides you with an insight into your hidden potential and provides meaningful material to help you develop your unique Resume.

Review this report by placing a tick beside each statement you agree with, highlighting any statement that provides you with new awareness and placing a question mark (?) against any statement that you are not sure about. Focus on the statements with ticks, and then consider sharing these insights with someone whose opinion you value.

2. Career Development Report: Repeat the same process as set out above. In some cases you may want to refer back to some of the (?). This report is designed as a coaching tool to prepare you for the work place and it may be worth discussing some potential blind spots.

3. Career Options Report: When you review this report, only consider the careers that are 75% or

higher – it is up to you to select the careers you wish to consider. Based on Enjoyment Performance Theory, Harrison’s 25+ years of research proves that individuals who enjoy 75% or more of their career are 3 times more likely to succeed than those who enjoy less than 75% of their career.

4. Career Enjoyment Report: We suggest you select the 5 careers you like the most and then

research using a few trusted websites. From the 5 chosen careers, only select 2 Career Enjoyment Reports to begin with and print them in Colour to appreciate the rating against each behavioural trait:

• A Green Dot represents a good fit.

• A Yellow Dot represents a small amount of growth and change is required.

• A Red Dot represents a substantial amount of growth and change is required.

The ‘Work Preference Questionnaire’ measures 175 Work Related Traits and all of these can be developed with effort on your part.

TAFE Qld offers a free career counselling service for both Vocational & Higher Education pathways.

Step 2: Career Development Reports

It is important to start with this report because it raises self-esteem by focusing on exceptional personal strengths and talents that may have been unrecognised by the individual previously but are true talents and gifts.

Some of the key areas assessed: • Keeping a Positive Outlook • Striving for Achievement • Communicating Considerately & Truthfully • Logically Solving Problems • Being Adaptive and Organised

It is also particularly useful in preparing job application materials and for interview preparation.

Step 4: Review ‘Career Development’ Report

This report identifies the key factors that can help build or hinder a strong career. Some of the language in this section is straightforward and not entirely positive. This is to be expected because every individual needs to understand that there are always areas that show up as less-than-ideal but that is the point of this report – to increase self-awareness in order to set goals and priorities for a positive and productive life. The key areas assessed:

• The tasks you enjoy • Your Interests • Preferred work environments • Interpersonal skills • Motivations • Decision-making tendencies • Characteristics related to leadership
