This is Maui This is Maui
You can ride monster
breaks or learn
to surf in gentle
waves
Snorkelers pause for green sea turtles. Zip-liners swoop over jungles. Couples exchange vows on the beach. And early risers watch the sun punch through the clouds from their perch on the edge of a lofty volcano. The most visited of the Neighbor Islands, Maui lures travelers with a revital-izing mix of outdoor adventure and gorgeous scenery.
The beaches alone are reason enough to visit. Maui’s entire western coast is fringed with sun-kissed strands, some backed by resorts, some full of boogie boards and cabana chairs, others as bare as the day they were born. Golden sand, red sand and black sand – take your pick.
Maui boasts world-class conditions for anything that involves a wave. Yet each of its shores has a different temperament. You can ride monster breaks if you’re a pro or learn to surf in gentle waves if you’re not. Snorkel beside manta rays. Kayak with dolphins. Stand up paddle in a quiet bay. Or pin a sail to your board and fly with the wind.
Exploring on land is equally awesome. Lace up your boots and hike the crunchy moonscape surface of the world’s largest dormant volcano. Twist along the jungly, cliff-hugging Hana Hwy, soaking up waterfalls and swimming holes. Or take it airborne on an adrenaline-charged swoop down the West Maui Mountains.
Maui’s natural charms are enhanced by top-notch restaurants and lodging. From scrappy food trucks to white-linen dining rooms, Maui’s eateries embrace local food and its traditions. Resorts wow guests with impeccable service and ocean-side locations, with B&Bs providing more personal alohas. For more adventure – or quietude – a quick leap across the channel delivers you into the arms of Maui’s smaller siblings, Lanaʻi and Molokaʻi.
