    Why are you Muslim?

I am Muslim because I believeIslam is the greatest religion there

is. In Islam, there are no separate

groups based on popularity. We allcome together as brothers and

sisters. We all unite for prayer

during the week. Even completestrangers are welcome with open

    arms. Being Muslim means being

part of a family rather than everhaving to feel isolated and alone.

O People of the Scripture! Do not exaggerate in your religion, and do not say anything concerning Allah

except the truth. The Messiah, Jesus son of Mary, was only a messenger of Allah, and His word, which He

    conveyed unto Mary, and a spirit from Him. So believe in Allah and His messengers . . . (Quran 4:171;

    see also 66:12)

In the above passage Jesus in called by four noble titles. He is the Messiah, the Messenger of Allah, a

Word from Allah, and a Spirit from Allah. In the same passage, it is clear that the Quran seeks to

discourage exaggeration in religion. Further in the same passage, Allah says:

Allah is only One God. Far is it removed from His transcendent majesty that He should have a son. His isall that is in the heavens and all that is in the earth. And Allah is sufficient as Defender. (Quran 4:171)

Refusing to call Jesus son of God is not done with a view to belittle Jesus. No! On the contrary, it is done

to Glorify God, to magnify His name, and to proclaim His transcendent majesty.

The Quran confirms that Jesus was born of a virgin woman. When the angel announced to Mary, on

whom be peace, that she will bear a child, she said: My Lord! How can I have a child when no mortal

    has touched me.

She received the following reply: So (it will be). Allah creates what He will. If He decrees a thing, He

says unto it only: Be! and it is. (Quran 3: 45, 47)

In another chapter, after relating the incidents surrounding the birth of the Messiah, the Quran concludes

as follows: It befits not (the majesty of) Allah that He should take unto Himself a son. Glory be to Him!When he decrees a thing, He says unto it only: Be! And it is. (Quran 19:35)

The Quran seeks to correct a common misconception in the minds of people. Many assume that since

Jesus had no father then God must be his father.

Glory be to God. He does not father children. He created everyone we know from a man and a woman.

But He created Adam from neither a man nor a woman. And He created Eve from a man, but not from a

woman. Then, as if to complete the picture, God created Jesus from a woman but not from a man. God

has demonstrated His power to create in every way.

God says: Lo! the likeness of Jesus with Allah is as the likeness of Adam. He created him from dust, then

he said unto him: Be! and he is. (3:59)

It is important to realize that Jesus, on whom be peace, never taught that he is the Son of God. God says

in the Quran that those who call Jesus Son of God are following the saying of other people (see 9:30).

Jesus taught only what he was commanded (5:117). He himself was quite pleased with being a servant

of God (4:172). As a messenger of God, Jesus knew that none in the heavens or the earth can approach

God except as a slave (19:93).

Finally, those who say that God has a son should know that they have no warrant for this, but they are

    saying something without knowledge (10:68).

In the next part, God willing, we will see from a careful study of the Bible that Jesus never called

    himself Gods son.

This sermon was delivered on the Ninth Day of Islamic month ofDhul-Hijjah Year 632 A.C (10 A.H.) in the Uranah valley of Mount

Arafat in Mecca. After praising and thanking Allah the Prophet (saws) said:

O People, lend me an attentive ear, for I know not whether after this year I shall ever be amongst

you again. Therefore listen to what I am saying very carefully and take these words to those who

could not be present here today.

O People, just as you regard this month, this day, this city as Sacred, so regard the life and property of

every Muslim as a sacred trust. Return the goods entrusted to you to their rightful owners. Hurt no one

so that no one may hurt you. Remember that you will indeed meet your Lord, and that he will indeed

reckon your deeds. Allah has forbidden you to take usury (interest), therefore all interest obligations

shall henceforth be waived. Your capital is yours to keep. You will neither inflict nor suffer any inequity.

Allah has judged that there shall be no interest and that all the interest due to Abbas ibn Abdal

Muttalib [the Prophet's uncle] be waived.

Every right arising out of homicide in pre-Islamic days is henceforth waived and the first such right that

i waive is that arising from the murder of Rabiah ibn al Harithibn.

O People, the unbelievers indulge in tampering with the calender in order to make permissible that

which Allah forbade, and to forbid that which Allah has made permissible. With Allah the months are

twelve in number. Four of them are holy, three of these are successive and one occurs singly between

the months of Jumada and Shaban.

Beware of Satan, for the safety of your religion. He has lost all hope of that he will be able to lead you

astray in big things, so beware of following him in small things.

O People, it is true that you have certain rights with regard to your women but they also have rights

over you. Remember that you have taken them as your wives only under Allahs trust and with His

permission. If they abide by your right, then to them belongs the right to be fed and clothed in

kindness. Do treat your women well and be kind to them for they are your partners and committed

helpers. And it is your right that they do not make friends with anyone of whom you do not approve,

as well as never to be unchaste. O People, listen to me in earnest, worship Allah, say your five daily

prayers, fast during the month of Ramadhan, and give your wealth in Zakat. Perform Hajj if you can

    afford to.

All mankind is from Adam and Eve, an Arab has no superiority over a non-Arab nor a non-Arab has any

superiority over an Arab; also a white has no superiority over a black nor a black has any superiority

over a white except by piety and good action. Learn that every Muslim is a brother to every Muslim

and that the Muslims constitute one brotherhood. Nothing shall be legitimate to a Muslim, whichbelongs to a fellow Muslim unless it was given freely and willingly. Do not therefore do injustice to

yourselves. Remember one day you will meet Allah and answer your deeds. So beware: do not stray

from the path of righteousness after I am gone.

O People, no prophet or apostle will come after me, and no new faith will be born. Reason well,

therefore, O People, and understand my words, which I convey to you. I leave behind me two things,

the Quran and my Sunnah and if you follow these you will never go astray.

All those who listen to me shall pass on my words to others and those to others again; and may the

last ones understand my words better than those who listen to me directly. Be my witness, O Allah,

that I have conveyed Your message to Your people.

    Yes. The Quran states unequivocally:

There is no compulsion in religion. Truth stands out clearly from falsehood. (Quran

    2:256)

Freedom of conscience is an essential tenant of Islam. Truth can only be seen if it is not

clouded by coercion. Protection of the rights of non-Muslims is an intrinsic part of Islamic

law. The Prophet Muhammad is reported to have said:

He who hurts a non-Muslim citizen of a Muslim State I am his adversary and I shall

be his adversary on the Day of Judgment.

Beware on the Day of Judgment, I shall, myself, be the accuser against him who wrongs

a non-Muslim citizen (of a Muslim State) or Lays on him a responsibility greater than he

can bear, or deprives him of anything that belongs to him.

History provides many examples of Muslims respect towards other faiths. For instance,

prior to the Spanish Inquisition, Jews and Christians lived and prospered in Spain for

centuries under Muslim rule. Another well-known example is when Omar, the second

successor to Prophet Muhammad, entered Jerusalem. He refused to pray inside the

Church of the Holy Sepulcher. He was concerned that some overzealous Muslim in the

future might destroy the Church and build a Mosque in his honor.

Is Islam respectful of other beliefs?

    1) FAITH

There is no god worthy of worship except God and

Muhammad is His messenger. This declaration of faith is

called the Shahada, a simple formula that all the faithful

pronounce. In Arabic, the first part is la ilaha illa Llah -

'there is no god except God'; ilaha (god) can refer to anything

which we may be tempted to put in place of God - wealth,

power, and the like. Then comes illa Llah: 'except God', the

source of all Creation. The second part of the Shahada

is Muhammadun rasulu'Llah: 'Muhammad is the messenger

of God.' A message of guidance has come through a man like

    2) PRAYER

Salat is the name for the obligatory prayers, which are

performed five times a day, and are a direct link between the

worshipper and God. There is no hierarchical authority in

Islam, and no priests, so a learned person who knows the

Quran, chosen by the congregation, leads the prayers. These

five prayers contain verses from the Quran, and are said in

Arabic, the language of the Revelation, but personal

supplication can be offered in one's own language. Because

shalat is transliterated from arabic word, so it has multipleenglish spellings such as salat, salah, sholat, sholah or

shalah. Some peoples also called shalat as namaz

Prayers are said at dawn, noon, mid-afternoon, sunset and

nightfall, and thus determine the rhythm of the entire day.

Although it is preferable to worship together in a mosque, a

Muslim may pray almost anywhere, such as in fields, offices,

factories and universities. Visitors to the Muslim world are3) THE 'ZAKAT'

One of the most important principles of Islam is

that all things belong to God, and that wealth is

therefore held by human beings in trust. The word

zakat means both 'purification' and 'growth'. Our

possessions are purified by setting aside a

proportion for those in need, and, like the pruning

of plants, this cutting back balances and

    encourages new growth.

Each Muslim calculates his or her own zakat

individually. For most purposes this involves the

payment each year of two and a half percent of

    one's capital.

    4) THE FAST

Every year in the month of Ramadan, all Muslims fast from first

light until sundown, abstaining from food, drink, and sexualrelations. Those who are sick, elderly, or on a journey, and women

who are pregnant or nursing are permitted to break the fast and

make up an equal number of days later in the year. If they are

physically unable to do this, they must feed a needy person for

every day missed. Children begin to fast (and to observe the

prayer) from puberty, although many start earlier.

Although the fast is most beneficial to the health, it is regarded

principally as a method of self-purification. By cutting oneself off

from worldly comforts, even for a short time, a fasting person

gains true sympathy with those who go hungry as well as growth

    in one's spiritual life.

    5) PILGRIMAGE (HAJJ)

The annual pilgrimage to Makkah - the Hajj - is an obligation only for those

who are physically and financially able to perform it. Nevertheless, about two

million people go to Makkah each year from every corner of the globe providing

a unique opportunity for those of different nations to meet one another.

Although Makkah is always filled with visitors, the annual Hajj begins in

the twelfth month of the Islamic year (which is lunar, not solar, so that Hajj

and Ramadan fall sometimes in summer, sometimes in winter). Pilgrims

wear special clothes: simple garments, which strip away distinctions ofclass and culture, so that all stand equal before God.

The rites of the Hajj, which are of Abrahamic origin, include circling the

Ka'ba seven times, and going seven times between the mountains of Safa

and Marwa as did Hagar during her search for water. Then the pilgrims

stand together on the wide plain of Arafa and join in prayers for God's

forgiveness, in what is often thought of as a preview of the Last Judgment.

In previous centuries the Hajj was an arduous undertaking. Today,

however, Saudi Arabia provides millions of people with water, modern

transport, and the most up-to-date health facilities.

The close of the Hajj is marked by a festival, the Eid al-Adha, which is

celebrated with prayers and the exchange of gifts in Muslim communities

everywhere. This, and the Eid al-Fitr, a feast-day commemorating the end of

Ramadan, is the main festivals of the Muslim calendar.

    7 Interesting Facts about Islam

The word "jihad" does not mean "holy

    war". Instead, it means the

inner struggle that one endures intrying to submit their will to the

will of God. Some Muslims may say they are

    going for "jihad" when

fighting in a war to defend themselves ortheir fellow Muslims, but they only

say this because they are conceding that it

will be a tremendous struggle. But there are

many other forms of jihad, which are more

relevant to the everyday life of a Muslim

such as the struggles against laziness,

arrogance, stinginess, or the struggleagainst a tyrant ruler or against

the temptation of Satan, or against one's

    own ego, etc.

    "Muslim" means"anyone or anything

    that submits itself to

    the will

    of God".

Allah is not the God of Muslims only.

He is the God of all peopleand all creation. Just because people

refer to God using different terms

does not mean that they are different

gods. Spanish people refer to God as

"Dios" and French people refer to God

as "Dieu", yet they are all the same

    God. Interestingly, most Arab Jews

and Arab Christians refer to God as

"Allah". And the word Allah in Arabicappears on the walls of many Arab

    churches.

    According to Islamic

    governments there are over

    1.2 billion Muslims in the

    world today. The Muslim

    population of Russia alone is

over 50 million. In other words,

at least one out of every sixpersons in the world is Muslim,

which is one of the reasons

    why

    The name

    Muhammad is

    the most common

    name in the world.

1 Islam" means "peacethrough thesubmission to God".

    2

    3

    4

The Islamic concept of God is

that He is loving, merciful, and

    compassionate. But Islam also

teaches that He is just and

    swift in punishment. Nevertheless,

    Allah once said to Prophet

    Muhammad, "My mercy prevails

over my wrath." Islam teaches abalance between fear and hope,

    protecting one from both

    complacency and despair.
