A Day for LeisureRecreation is a vital part of life, and here in Agassiz we take

that to heart. The District of Kent recently conducted a community-wide

Leisure Needs Assessment, which helped to highlight local residents’ most valued aspects of healthy living. Kent Leisure Services heard that message, loud and clear, and this year are actively making changes to accommodate the community’s needs.

The Leisure Centre is now open longer hours, and offering more programs than ever.

head to the lake. Harrison Village Mall is full of gift choices, souvenirs and every day essentials. Need something for your day at the beach? You’ll want to stop at the merchants along Agassiz’s Pioneer Avenue, or load up on picnic foods at one of our supermarkets or produce stands.

On the BeachEnjoy the new look of the lake, by spending some time at

Harrison Lake Plaza. Kick off your shoes and work on your sand sculpting skills. Take a leisurely walk around the lagoon, grab an ice cream at one of our many restaurants or just soak up the sun and marvel at the view.

There are as many reasons to head for Harrison Hot Springs as there are grains of sand on the beaches. When you’re done there, head down Rockwell Drive and travel along the lake’s east shoreline. Take the time to visit quieter beach fronts, or rest in the soothing spray of a waterfall. Stay outdoors a little longer, with a camping trip to either Hicks Lake or Deer Lake, both of which have their own picturesque views and trail systems.

On the FarmThe Circle Farm Tour is a collective of farms around the Fraser

Valley, and Agassiz and Harrison Mills play important roles. From cheeses to herbs, cows to hazelnuts, there is something

Food Cycle Tour heads out to Agassiz.Cyclists check in, grab a map, and make their way to locations

A Day in HistoryThe oldest wooden railroad station still in existence in B.C. now

houses the Agassiz-Harrison Museum where you can see period clothing, artifacts and photos of pioneer life. Admission is free and the museum is open from May to September. The park itself is a beautiful place to take a stroll or stop for a picnic.

A Day for WorshipThere are several places of worship throughout the region, with

many denominations represented, including Anglican, Christian, Catholic, Mennonite, Jehovah’s Witness and the United Church. All Saints Anglican Church is one of the oldest churches in the province, and worth a visit to take in the beautiful stained glass windows.

A Day to CelebrateWe may act small town the rest of the year, but the Christmas

season doesn’t pass quietly around here. Agassiz is lucky enough to be a stop for the CPR Holiday Train,

which winds its way through six provinces and seven states near Christmastime, collecting for food banks along its journey.

Get out and support the food bank, hear some great live music, and have a chance to see Santa Claus, too.

All the food and money collected here in Agassiz goes directly to the Agassiz Community Services food bank. So this year, bundle up, get down to the tracks and spread the joy.

Free music on the beach, a spectacular setting, high quality crafts, an art show, a children’s day, and exceptional talent each night at the Harrison Memorial Hall. That just about sums up the Harrison Festival of the Arts. And this year, for the 32nd year in a row, the Harrison Festival Society is planning on delivering another stellar line-up of performers and activities.

It all happens over nine days, from July 10 to 18. It’s a celebration without large crowds, endless line-ups, and high ticket prices.

This year’s music will include international performers like guitar wizard David Lindley, Dan Hicks and the Hot Licks, El Purchero del Horteleno, The Peatbog Faeries, an Indian slide-guitarist and a Maori/Celtic music group.

Canadian performers include returning festival favourites, a couple of iconic performers who haven’t played in Harrison and some exciting new discoveries. Returning to Harrison are the African music group H’Sao from Quebec, harmonica world champ Carlos del Junco and Vancouver’s world fusion outfi t Delhi 2 Dublin. Cape Breton’s iconic Mary Jane Lamond is a world renowned Gaelic singer, who festival organizers have been trying to book for years. New talent this year includes the modern traditional music of Nova Scotia/Quebec duo Bette & Wallet, amazing sounds of The Tabla Guy and Yukon Bluegrass outfi t Annie Lou.

A special project at this year’s festival is called North to Canada, about the Underground Railroad told in story and song. The project was developed by award-winning Blues musicians Diana Braithwaite and Chris Whiteley and will include a number of legendary Canadian Blues and Gospel performers, including Leon Bibb, Kenny “Blues Boss” Wayne, Donald Ray Johnson and Russell Jackson.

The Art Exhibit features the work of the Ranger Station Art Gallery’s Artist in Residence Rhonda Simmonds. Rhonda is an assemblage artist whose work is whimsical and thought-provoking at the same time.

Local history comes to lifeImagine a place where you could tiptoe back in time, learn

some history, throw on some gumboots and get dirty.You can have it all at Kilby Historic Site. Here, you have the choice to be as quiet as a dormouse or

to tromp around the yard with the many farm animals. The oldest building in the District of Kent is here, as is the haunted Manchester House Hotel.

See the area as it once was, from farm implements and a fueling station to living quarters and the general store and post offi ce.

The site has several special dates planned each year, inviting the public to share in something as simple as the change of seasons. You could camp at Kilby Park and enjoy repeated visits to the site, or purchase a season pass.

Ear to the GroundKeep an eye out for golden and green fi elds though the

summer. And then watch for the green and yellow hip-roof corn barns along the side of the road. Then you’ll know you’re in for a local treat. Corn season never seems to last long enough, so get your hands on some locally grown corn the minute you see it on the roadside. Just a few ears of our local corn is all you need to take your summer meals to another level. Kilby Historic Site is always fun, but even more so during

their annual Kids’ Festival.

Every year the Fraser Valley fi lls with bald eagles, who travel from miles around to feed on the spawning salmon in our rivers.

And as the birds converge, so do the bird lovers. While the majestic raptors can be seen for weeks throughout the area, the Fraser Valley Bald Eagle Festival (November 20 and 21) organizes events in Harrison Mills to educate the public about raptors and their current plights.

The enormously popular Festival takes place in perhaps the most biologically diverse and important areas in British Columbia. Deep in the heart of “Sasquatch Country” you will fi nd North America’s third largest gathering of bald eagles. The raptors are drawn to the area by the millions of spawning salmon that travel up the Fraser River to tributaries such as the Harrison River. The estuary is also home to incredible wildlife such as trumpeter swans, ducks, seal, bear, coyote, deer and the great white sturgeon.

For thousands of years the First Nation Peoples have lived here in harmony with the land and water and today they work with the Fraser Valley Bald Eagle Festival to welcome visitors to teach and share the knowledge they have gained over the ages.

The festival’s roots go back to1995, when the Habitat Conservation Trust Fund and the Wild Bird Trust, spearheaded by April Mol, set out to create the Harrison/Chehalis Bald Eagle Festival.

If you’re the type to be inspired by nature, welcome to paradise. Every hill and valley, every trail and riverside, is waiting to be discovered here. But there are a few things you should know before heading into the great outdoors.

The Harrison Hikers have been meeting weekly for the past 20 years. Each week, they set out on various levels of hikes, from easy walks along dike systems to advanced treks into the woods.

If you go, here are a few words from those wise walkers.

• Never hike alone.• Travel in groups of at least four.• Hike at the speed of the slowest member of the group.• Stay on the trail.• Resist the temptation to collect trees, plants or fl owers. • Respect wildlife. • Never approach or feed bears or other wild animals. • Always pack out what you take in. Don’t bury your trash. • Keep pets on leash at all times.• Tell someone where you are going and when you will return. • Carry a cell phone or VHF radio to communicate, if possible.

On bear safety: Most bears will leave if they are aware of a group's presence. Stay in the open as much as possible. Keep children close at hand on trails. If you do meet a bear, don't run and do keep calm. Make a wide detour and leave the animal a way to escape.

How to climb Mt. CheamMt. Cheam is a 9.5 km round trip, with four hours of hiking

time and an elevation gain of 650 metres. Once a year, our group is ambitious enough to think of

conquering Mount Cheam. And though the way to the top of the formidable mountain has been amply described by others, we feel that we should also tell a tale about it.

One year, we decided to “assault” the mountain from the back, since we were told that this is the easier route. To do this we drove along Chilliwack Lake Road for 28 km (from Vedder Crossing) to the point where the road crosses Chilliwack River for

the second time. Right after the bridge across the river we found a forest service road to our left which led us, after about 3 km, to a small gravel pit where we parked our regular cars and shared 4 wheel drives.

From the gravel pit, we followed Chipmunk Road for about half an hour, bypassing a number of forks in both directions, until we reached the Mount Cheam trailhead.

We parked our cars and followed the trail in a zigzag fashion right to the top of the mountain.

For all of us it was one of the most interesting hikes we have done and well worth the effort. After all, to be able to say “I have been up there” is a must for all of us who live in the shadow of Mt. Cheam.

FRASER VALLEY DRAGON BOAT CLUB • Established in 2002, this society is committed to assisting and overseeing activities which will encourage, promote and develop teams within the Fraser Valley for the sole purpose of dragon boating. The club is currently made up of four mixed teams that practice one or two times a week on Harrison Lake. The club is in the process of offering a Youth team (13 to 18) and a Master’s team (55+). RANGER STATION ART GALLERY • This local art gallery situated on the shores of Harrison Lake features monthly shows by area artists. Operated by the Kent Harrison Arts Council, at 98 Rockwell Drive in Harrison Hot Springs. 604-796-2723.

HARRISON YACHT CLUB • This is a non-profi t organization formed for the purposes of promoting safe boating on Harrison Lake. The HYC operates on land formerly occupied by the BC Forest Service and provided by the Village of Harrison Hot Springs.

A fair to rememberThis year marks the 106th Agassiz Fall Fair, and it has lasted through

the years for good reason. Agassiz has its roots fi rmly planted in agriculture, and the fair makes no apologies while celebrating that fact. From glorious vegetable displays to 4-H accomplishments and

demonstrations, to canning, fl owers, crafts and everything in-between, the fair is a beautiful representation of everything Agassiz stands for. Throw in the much beloved midway and games, entertainment and

sinfully delicious food treats, and you’ve got one heckuva fair. The Agassiz Fall Fair has recently been given the title the Best Little

Fair, but anyone who has passed through the gates over the years already knew that. This year, visit the fair on September 17 and 18. For more information on exhibiting, times or other related events at the

A new market in townThis will be the inaugural year for Agassiz’s authentic community

based Farmers’ Market with a wide array of fabulous vendor-produced goods— which may include anything from fresh fruits and veggies, to baked goods, to local artisan projects. The market’s objective is to support our local economy and foster a community of sustainability.They will also offer a weekly space available to non profi t
