Courses International ESOL About these qualifications
The International ESOL (IESOL) courses will help you develop your skills and abilities to communicate in English and enable you to work or study in English-speaking countries and/or environments. After studying the IESOL courses, you may register for City & Guilds IESOL exam or Cambridge IELTS exam test to achieve related certificates.
The City & Guilds International ESOL (IESOL) qualifications are for anyone who is a non-native speaker of English and would like to demonstrate their ability in communicating in English. Many English-speaking universities accept this qualification as evidence of language proficiency for entry on to their courses (Foundation, Diploma, Bachelor Degree, Master Degree and PHD). Available levels: International ESOL (IESOL) qualifications are available at six levels and is benchmarked to the Common European Framework of Reference (CEFR). The course will cover:
• Reading English texts • Writing in English • Listening to and understanding English.
Preliminary - A1 (Entry Level 1)You can: • Use everyday expressions and very basic
phrases for practical needs • Ask and answer questions about personal
details • Understand short texts on familiar topics
and obtain information from signs and symbols
Write simple phrases and sentences in documents, ie forms.
Communicator - B2 (Level 1)You can: • Understand main ideas of complex communi-
cation • Interact with a degree of fluency and sponta-
neity without strain for either party • Engage in discussion in familiar and unfamil-
iar situations • Communicate in detail, appropriate to pur-
pose and audience.
Access - A2 (Entry Level 2)You can: • Understand sentences and frequently-
used expressions • Communicate in tasks requiring an ex-
change of information • Obtain information from short documents,
familiar sources, signs and symbols Write to communicate with some aware-
ness of the intended audience.
Expert - C1 (Level 2)You can: • Understand demanding texts and recognise
implicit meaning • Use language fluently and spontaneously • Engage in discussion making clear and effec-
tive contributions • Produce well-structured, detailed text on
complex subjects • Communicate ideas and opinions effectively.
Achiever - B1 (Entry Level 3)You can: • Understand main points of clear standard
communication • Convey information, feelings and opinions
on familiar topics • Engage in discussion to reach a shared
understanding • Produce a simple connected text • Describe experiences, events, hopes &
ambitions.
Mastery - C2 (Level 3)You can: • Understand with ease virtually everything
heard or read • Summarise information, reconstruct argu-
ments and accounts coherently • Express self spontaneously, very fluently and
precisely, differentiating finer shades of meaning even in more complex situations.
Recognitions Recognitions refer to the acceptance of International English Qualifications as true and valid measures of language performance for a particular academic or employment purpose. NZCB offers the International ESOL (City & Guilds) which is recognised, among others, by: Professional Associations, for example:

Association of Chartered Certified Accountants (ACCA)
Governments, examples from Europe: Poland (as a required qualification for civil servants and teachers of English at primary and
secondary school) Czech Republic (as a required qualification for civil servants and government officials) Italy (as a qualification entitling learners for crediti formativi) Slovakia (as a substitute for school-leaving examinations in English)
NZQA IESOL is recognised by NZQA as English proficiency outcomes for international students to enrol in all programmes ranging from certificates, diplomas, bachelor and degrees, masters’ degrees to doctoral degrees provided by any polytechnic or Private Tertiary Establishment (PTE) in New Zealand. Academic pathway NZQA has specified the language requirements for tertiary studies for international students whose first language is not English. The following table of some of the specific English proficiency outcomes is for your reference.
Application Procedures
An enrolment package will be made available to students through agents or at the College upon request.
An enrolment form must be completed and submitted to the College or it’s agent. The enrolment form will be assessed and upon acceptance, an Offer of Admission will be offered to
the applicant. Students need to contact the nearest New Zealand Immigration Service Office for information on
applying for a visa to study in New Zealand. The applicant must pay the stated fees into the College’s Public Trust account by means of either
cash, telegraphic transfer, direct debit, bank cheque or credit card. When the fees are received, a receipt and an Offer of Place will be issued to the applicant. Upon arrival at the College, students need to bring their passport and updated visa. Code of Practice
The New Zealand College of Business (NZCB) has agreed to observe and be bound by the Code of Practice for the Pastoral Care of International Students published by the Ministry of Education. Copies of the Code are available from www.nzqa.govt.nz
Immigration
Full details of visa and permit requirements, advice on rights to employment in New Zealand while studying, and reporting requirements are available through the New Zealand Immigration Service, and can be viewed on their website at www.immigration.govt.nz
If a student is found not to hold a valid student visa/permit, or if they have terminated their study before course completion, the College is obliged to advice New Zealand Immigration Service (NZIS) immediately.
Eligibility for Health Services
Most International students are not entitled to publicly founded health services while in New Zealand. If you receive medical treatment during your visit, you may be liable for the full
costs of that treatment. Full details on entitlements to publicly – funded health services are available through the Ministry of Health and can be viewed on their website at www.moh.govt.nz
Accident Insurance
The Accident Compensation Corporation provides accident insurance for all New Zealand citizens, residents and temporary visitors to New Zealand, but you may still be liable for other medical and related costs. Further information can be viewed on the ACC website at www.acc.co.nz
Medical and Travel Insurance
International students must have appropriate and current medical and travel insurance while studying in New Zealand.
N.B. Students must provide evidence of appropriate and current medical and travel insurance. This insurance must cover the full length of time spent in New Zealand.
The school will keep a record of the Insurance Policy number, start and end dates, and the type of cover provided.
