FROM THE PRINCIPAL NEW GATES We are nearing the completion of the new automatic gates at the staff car park entry and exit. This will ensure our grounds are secure before and after hours. It will also stop the unsafe use of this area by students and community who use the carpark as a pedestrian access. A new gate will also be installed at the hall pedestrian access for added security. Once installed all entry and exit points at our school will be lockable. We have had numerous recent reports of unauthorised entry to the school by students and other community members. Several times this has resulted in vandalism and misuse of our school facilities. All gates will be locked in the school holidays. It is an breach of the Inclosed Lands Act for anyone to be on school grounds without permission from the principal. DISABLED CAR SPACES It has been brought to my attention that some parents who do not hold a Disability Parking Permit are parking regularly in the Disability space in the Wilga St carpark. I ask that people who have been parking here to refrain from doing so. We have several families who require this space in order to access the school safely. Please remember that it is illegal to park in Disability car spaces unless your are a permit holder and the person whose photo is displayed is in the vehicle. Anyone caught parking in a disabled car park without holding a valid mobility parking sticker will not only get a fine ($572) for this offence, they will also receive a demerit point penalty. The parking ranger will be patrolling our school boundaries. EXTENSION OF PATHWAY An extension of the current footpath at the Wilga St entry is in the process of being extended to further support the safe use of this area for our community who hold a NSW Mobility Permit. The new path will ensure there is a smooth and safe surface in all types of weather. Please remember to drop, hug and go IMMEDIATELY, at the gate in which your children enter. PLEASE only come into the school grounds if it is for an ESSENTIAL purpose. Concerns have been voiced by some community members who have noticed some parents are not adhering to the current NSW Department of Education regulations. DISABLED CAR SPACES

It has been brought to my attention that some parents who do not hold a Disability Parking Permit are parking regularly in the Disability space in the Wilga St carpark. I ask that people who have been parking here to refrain from doing so. We have several families who require this space in order to access the school safely. Please remember that it is illegal to park in Disability car spaces unless your are a permit holder and the person whose photo is displayed is in the vehicle. KINDERGARTEN WRITING SESSION

In KG the students were thinking and learning how to put a story together with Dr Kate. The topic was about kicking a ball using the text, “I kick with my left foot.” They were also practicing their left and right understanding. Dr Kate then reviewed research articles with Mrs Makepeace and Miss Bresolin on early learning teaching approaches to writing. They also analysed some writing samples that the students’ completed. The focus of this session was to identify the skills students were developing to create meaning in their writing.

This week Dr Kate Bricknell was once again teaching at our school. On Monday morning she taught a writing lesson in 5/6A with the teachers watching and learning too. The focus for Year 5 and 6 was using the Writing Toolbox (the skills needed to write different text types). This is using a variety of writing techniques including repetition, alliteration and personification as a means to write more complex and interesting texts that appeal to their audiences. The 5/6 teachers then meet with Dr Bricknell to further

discuss the lesson focus and broaden their understanding of metacognitive practice. The Stage 3 teachers focussed on extending students to increase their writing capacity. They also reviewed the NAPLAN writing criteria and guidelines to ensure we expose our students to all criteria. They then unpacked the 5/6 writing lesson to determine why the strategies Dr Bricknell used work so well in the classroom. These are valuable sessions that the teachers truly value.

YEAR 3 AND 4 WRITING SESSION

Year 3 and 4 worked with Dr Kate on Tuesday. Their lesson had a focus on using poetry to build the students’ Writing Tool Box to then be able to use these tools in their writing. The tools used in this lesson were alliteration and repetition. The poems that these Students wrote were Exceptional. Well done everyone!

YEAR 1 AND 2 WRITING WITH DR KATE

On Tuesday morning Dr Kate worked with 1/2K and the Stage 1 teachers. The teaching and learning focus was identifying and using alliteration (repetition of a sound) in poetry. For example Peter Piper picked a peck of pickled peppers.”

The students also learnt about anthropomorphism (the giving of human characteristics or behaviour to an animal or object) and zoomorphism (the opposite). The teachers then spent time with Dr Kate to review the lesson and dissected the learning of individual students within that lesson.
