Introduction

The following words are by Jim Payne, creator and editor of

the Directory of Voluntary Organization in Sandpoint, ID, with

his permission and encouragement: “The voluntary sector

plays a vital role filling human needs in many areas. This

sector also plays a moral and idealistic role by demonstrating

that social problems can be addressed without relying on the

threat of force. In their humble way, voluntary groups

demonstrate that we can rely on enthusiasm, sociability and

generosity to meet community needs. In a world vexed by

violence and coercion, volunteers are quietly implementing

the ideal of brotherhood that makes for a better world. I

have compiled this directory to help strengthen voluntary

groups in our community by helping them connect to

volunteers and donors.” Thank you Jim for inspiring the

Tomahawk Directory.

This first 2011 Tomahawk Directory includes 68 organizations reporting. This Directory is our gift to the citizens in and around the Tomahawk Area who care so much about its people and environment that they get involved.

For purposes of inclusion in this directory, a voluntary group or club is defined as an organization that:

a) Consists of volunteers contributing unpaid services, or b) Obtains resources (cash, labor, and services) through

voluntary means, or c) Gives services, labor or goods back to the community.

The organizations in this directory have been grouped in the following ten

(10) categories:

1. Service, philanthropy and fellowship 2. Social Action 3. Sports 4. Health and self-improvement 5. Environment and facilities 6. Arts and culture 7. Hobbies and recreation 8. Production and commerce 9. Education 10. Religion

Accuracy and thoroughness has been attempted. Additions and corrections will be processed next year.
