  • The International Board for Plant Genetic Resources (IBPGR) is an autonomous international scientific organization under the aegis of the Consultative Group on International Agricultural Research (CGIAR). IBPGR was established by the CGIAR in 1974. The basic function of IBPGR is to promote and coordinate an irternational network of genetic resources centres to further the collection, conservation, documentation, evaluation and use of plant germplasm and thereby contribute to raising the standard of living and welfare of people throughout tho world. Financial support for the core programme is provided by the Governments of Australia, Austria, Belgium, Canada, China, Denmark, France, FRG, India, Italy, Japan, the Netherlands, Norway, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland, the UK and tie USA as well as the United Nations Environment Programme and the World Bank

    FOREWORD TO THE SE.COND EDITION

This directory replaces the first edition pul)lished if) 1980. The formal differs from the first edition iii several respects. Most obvious is tie use of a standard set of headingsfor each entry, with each being included even where no information was available to IBPGR. It ishoped that there will be feedback to IBPGR front the users to fill in these gaps. Individual readers may alo wish to treat their directory as a 'working copy' by filling in the in formation as it becomes available to them.

In those cases where it has not been possible to verify all the taxonomic names used, the), have been includedl as cited by curators. In san cases where a naume has been used that is generally regarded as no longer valid for that species, it has been retained as being the name still used by curators and, hence, to identify accessions in collections.

IBPGR wishes to acknowledge the International Lupin Association for its input to tlie section concerning lupin germplasm collections.

It is the hope of IBPGR that this directory will prove useful. and that it will act as a catalyst in stimulating interest in the conserva'tion au duise of the genetic resources of food legumes.
