Research into music video directors

Shane. C. Drake• Shane Drake is an American music director and usually

specializes in directing rock bands such as Paramore, Panic! At the Disco and Laura Bell Bundy. However he has won awards for directing music videos for Hip Hop artists such as Timberland.

• He has has motifs for his music video which show his style of working and this is mainly shown through the camera shots.

• Most of the camera angles are moving shots and change very frequently to build up the pace and tension. This is obviously because most of the videos he directs are of the rock genre and the music is fast pace. Even though the genre of rock is usually seen as quite dark, Drake’s videos are usually full of colour and are quite interesting. Perfect examples of that would be ‘Laura Bell Bundy- Giddy On Up’ and ‘Paramore- Misery Business’.

Kinga Burza• Kinga Burza specializes in directing music videos with the genre of

pop and has directed artists videos such as Katy Perry, James Blunt, Kate Nash and Will Young.

• She has directed quite a few of Kate Nash’s music videos and I have noticed similar aspects in all three that have become almost a motif for her as an artist. Some of these videos include: Caroline’s a Victim, Mouthwash and Pumpkin Soup.

• All of the videos are all filled with lots of bright colours such as the costume and setting.

• Kate Nash isn’t portrayed as a sex symbol at all as she wears conservative costume and her make up isn’t provocative.

• In Caroline’s a Victim and Mouthwash, Kate does a performance of some sort all it isn’t typical of what you would expect, as she is sitting down and calmly singing. There is no live band performance or anything stereotypical which is quite effective as it’s unusual.

• Differing from Shane Drake’s videos, the shots are quite slow and they tend to be quite still and don’t move often. This reflects the difference in genres of rock and pop, how how music directors portray them differently.
