When I tell people that I’ve been directing Legally Blonde, I usually get, “Oh, isn’t that fun!” And they emphasize “fun” much like they would respond to seeing a toddler attempting to file a lawsuit. “Isn’t that cute!” In many ways Legally Blonde the Musical is “fun” and “cute,” but, like our very own Elle Woods, I believe that this show is so much more than it seems. At the heart of this musical is a deep understanding of self-discovery, pursuing dreams in spite of obstinacy, and discovering that love can exist where we hadn’t expected to look. Yes, we spend most of our time in a salon, and we sing ridiculous songs, but what is life’s journey without laughter? Elle Woods is a strong female protagonist that we can cheer on as she fights for justice, never losing sight of who she is, with unrestrained sincerity. For all of this, I do have to say that this production has been an absolute pleasure and, well, a lot of fun. The directing team, the cast, the tech crew – I couldn’t ask for better people to work with or a better way to spend my summer. The genuine talent and heart of this group of people is truly astounding. I hope that you enjoy tonight’s production, and that you’ll leave encouraged, empowered, and determined to make your dreams come true…even if they aren’t what you originally set out to achieve. - Michael Leali director’s note Artistic Director Cori Veverka Director of Development Brian Brems Managing Director Laurie Nevills Administrative Director Michael Leali Ginny Bateman, Kristie Vest, Laura Finch, Kate Scholtes, Operations and Conservation Staff, and the rest of the Oswegoland Park District.
