Director's ForewordI can’t believe Autumn is here already! How time flies when you’re working on a big project, such as the exciting series from The Museum of Modern Art (MoMA) in New York. This Australian exclusive for AGWA, and Perth, has the entire Gallery abuzz and working hard in order to get ready for it. I’m so looking forward to opening the first exhibition, Picasso to Warhol: Fourteen Modern Masters on 16 June and sharing these extraordinary works of art with you – many of which have never been seen in Australia before. Picasso to Warhol presents over 120 works from 14 celebrated artists including of course Picasso and Warhol, along with Matisse, Mondrian, Calder, Pollock, Bourgeois, Johns, Bearden, De Chirico, Miró, Léger, Duchamp and Brancusi. Each artist is represented by a group of key works which, when viewed together, clearly demonstrates how their styles often shifted and developed throughout their careers and how each artist was instrumental in the development of 20th century art. MoMA is an iconic institution of New York. It is the second most visited art museum in the city and is regarded as the foremost museum of modern and contemporary art in the world today. It has been a pleasure working with the Director of MoMA, Glenn D. Lowry, and his team. I look forward to welcoming Glenn to Perth for the Picasso to Warhol opening night and accompanying events. We have a wonderful series of supporting events planned for this exhibition and I encourage you to bookmark our website or sign-up for our e-newsletter so you can be the first in the know – there will be special exhibition tours, opening parties, guest lecturers, music events and much more.Complementing Picasso to Warhol is the first Australian retrospective of acclaimed photography artist Jeff Wall. The Gallery first collected his work in 1999 with Polishing and we’re delighted to curate this touring exhibition in association with The National Gallery of Victoria. I have no doubt that the sheer scale and incredible detail of these works will draw people in. And the stories behind some of the works will astound.But before the opening of both these exhibitions highlighting international artists I urge you to look a little closer to home and visit Year 12 Perspectives 2011 before it closes on 9 April. Every year, I am amazed by the talent evident in the work on display. I’m also pleased to announce Santos as the new Principal Exhibition Sponsor for Year 12 Perspectives and we welcome them to the Gallery as a committed supporter of the arts scene, in particular the youth arts scene, in Western Australia.Once again, I’ve more to tell you than the space allows! Tom Malone Prize 2003-2012 & Translucence: contemporary glass

This year the Gallery celebrates ten years of the Tom Malone Prize. Established in 2003, the Tom Malone Prize is an acquisitive prize for Australian glass artists and has been the conduit for a range of inspiring purchases in this exciting medium.

Currently on display we have the fourteen shortlisted artists for this year’s Prize, which includes the 2012 winner Brian Corr for Ensō. Corr's work will enter the permanent Collection, joining the works of past winners, which can be seen in the companion exhibition Translucence: contemporary glass. Providing further context and an overview of the Collection’s glass holdings, Translucence also includes a range of material from 1981 to the present day. 

Judges’ comments"We were truly impressed by Corr’s achievement in balancing intuition and technique to convey form, and form within space. His activation of glass as a medium of light sees him employing its natural qualities in a subtly dramatic way. The captivating interplay of void and shadow is the perfect showcase for his masterful combination of craft and poetry."

Year 12 Perspectives 2011Until 9 April 2012

Year 12 Perspectives is an annual exhibition which showcases the finest and most exciting work from graduating Year 12 students, and is truly one of the most popular events on the Gallery’s calendar. This year a general theme of relationships and connections seems to have evolved in the diverse selection; works depict the relationships between self and the wider community, between self and other family members, and the relationship one has with one's self.

Each artwork, whilst technically outstanding, also asks us to think about the world from a different perspective, with a mix of the political, the intimate, the reflective and the effervescent.

Come and see the exhibition to be provoked, challenged, delighted and entertained, but most of all, to see a glimpse of the world through the eyes of our young people.

The Art Gallery of WA is excited to announce that Santos Ltd (Santos) is the new Year 12 Perspectives Principal Exhibition Sponsor. As well as supporting the exhibition, Santos is sponsoring an award for the artwork considered the most popular by our visitors. The Santos Year 12 Perspectives People’s Choice Award will see the artist whose work is voted the most popular by Gallery audiences receive a trip for two to the Art Gallery of South Australia as their prize.

The school attended by the winning student will also receive a prize donated by Santos; for 30 current students to visit the Picasso to Warhol: Fourteen Modern Masters exhibition from The Museum of Modern Art in New York, opening at the Gallery in June this year. One lucky voter will win a season pass for two to this first MoMA exhibition. Voting closes Monday 26 March and the winners will be announced on Wednesday 4 April 2012.

Jeff Wall is recognised throughout the world as one of the most innovative and influential artists working today. JEFF WALL Photographs, this first Australian survey of his work brings together 26 photographs to present an overview of his outstanding achievements and features major works from over three decades of artistic and photographic innovation. Large-scale and luminous, his photographs have rewritten nearly every convention of photography. Wall’s outstanding body of work has played a decisive role in establishing photography as the major contemporary art form it is today.

Jeff Wall’s approach to photography is diverse, ranging from photographs presented as illuminated colour transparencies in light boxes, black and white prints, and colour prints to intimate small-scale photographic observations.

Wall’s photographs are ambitious and embrace an expansive curiosity about photography, art, and the picture-making possibilities of both today. His tableau-scale photographs are based on first hand observations of everyday situations and incidents. Their size, intensity and quality attract attention and offer the chance to revel in an imaginative 'near documentary' photographic moment.

Picasso to Warhol: Fourteen Modern Masters is the first exhibition in a series of six exciting shows from The Museum of Modern Art (MoMA) in New York. It features a rich selection of works by the world’s most important and inspiring modern artists: Pablo Picasso, Henri Matisse, Piet Mondrian, Constantin Brancusi, Fernand Léger, Marcel Duchamp, Giorgio de Chirico, Joan Miró, Alexander Calder, Jackson Pollock, Louise Bourgeois, Romare Bearden, Jasper Johns and Andy Warhol. 

Together, this group transformed the art and culture of the twentieth century. In order to convey their outstanding achievements, each artist is represented with a group of key works, many of which are on show for the first time in Australia, and rarely seen outside MoMA. This is a powerful and exciting show of the most breathtaking and significant treasures of modern art.

Our most important asset is the State Art Collection. Your Collection is the leading public art collection in the State, with many areas of acknowledged excellence, including Western Australian art, Modern British art and Indigenous art.  The many highlights of the inspiring art in the Your Collection displays are presented across all ground floor galleries in both the Centenary Galleries and the main Gallery building. The displays are chronologically arranged from the 1800s to today.

Art, craft and design, and Indigenous and non-Indigenous works are displayed together in Your Collection and are presented in four parts; 1800-1920 Here and There located in the Centenary Galleries includes works by Hans Heysen, Frederick McCubbin and Auguste Rodin; 1920-1960 Many Modernisms includes works by Stanley Spencer, Sidney Nolan and Kathleen O’Connor; 1960-1980 Anything Goes features work by Jenny Watson, Barbara Hepworth, Kaapa Tjampitjinpa and Alec Mingelmanganu; 1980–today Expanding Fields brings us up to date with major works by Rover Thomas, Ken Unsworth, Sally Gabori and Max Pam.

An eventful year ahead for the Art Gallery of

Well, it has only just begun but 2012 is already shaping up to be an incredibly exciting year for Foundation Members. Building on 2011's special insights and amazing journeys, this year we're upping the ante and making sure our Members are offered even more exciting premium events and activities that can be experienced nowhere else.

The first of these will be the chance to see internationally acclaimed artist Jeff Wall’s exhibition JEFF WALL Photographs at a special Foundation preview. Wall's work is the most significant in the world of contemporary photography, and the Gallery is leading the country in being the first venue for this special AGWA-originated exhibition. Foundation Members will have the opportunity to embrace this show before the general public with insights from the artist, and our Deputy Director | Chief Curator, Gary Dufour, curator of JEFF WALL Photographs.

A further highlight will be a Foundation preview event to celebrate the opening of the Gallery’s exclusive exhibition of the year from The Museum of Modern Art (MoMA) in New York, Picasso to Warhol: Fourteen Modern Masters. Glenn D. Lowry, Director of MoMA will be travelling to Perth especially for this momentous occasion, which marks the start of our unique relationship with MoMA. Not only are the works in Picasso to Warhol rarely seen outside the walls of MoMA, their compelling visual conversations offer fascinating insights into the trajectories of modern art, a series of art forms that has transformed not only art, but the world we live in today.

For those wanting to supplement their Gallery encounters with city-based adventures, Foundation Members in 2012 are being offered an experience unlike any other. Following on from the highly successful 2011 tour to Venice, Foundation Fellows, Benefactors, Governors and Vice-Patrons are also set to enjoy a unique art tour to New York in 2012. The six day tour will be conducted by AGWA Director, Dr Stefano Carboni. New York was Stefano’s home for 16 years while he was the Curator and Administrator of Islamic Art at the Metropolitan Museum of Art. Stefano’s contacts and knowledge of the New York arts scene are sure to make this another memorable Foundation trip. This trip will be a true insider's journey, a journey into the heart of the world's richest cultural capital. It is a journey not to be missed!

Other Foundation Events already planned for 2012 include: an interactive art activity for members and their families; a new Members Welcome Evening for an interesting behind the scenes tour of the Gallery; a unique shopping evening at the Art Gallery Shop; and monthly Picture Club sessions, where our expert Volunteer Gallery Guides lead the conversation about works of art in Your Collection, to name a few.
