HISTORY OF THE NINE INTERNATIONAL CLUBS

International Club I ( I. G. C. ) was founded at the home of Mrs. E. Ross Adair on Tuesday, May 5, 1953, at 3:00 P. M. The purpose and choice of members, as then defined, was "to form a club composed of diplomatic and congr~ssional women. The members were chosen because of two qualifications: (1) interest in and desire to help organize the group; ( 2 ) geographic location."

A second meeting was held on June 5, 1953, at the Canadian Embassy with Mrs. Hume Wrong as hostess. During this and subsequent meetings, a format for entertaining was developed and the charter members were chosen. They were:

According to the minutes of February 19, 1954, "It was decided to ask Mrs. J. W. Fulbright to join the group which would make the Congressional category four Republicans and four Democrats. " The husbands of this group were all members of the Foreign Relations Committee in the Senate and the Foreign Affairs Committee in the House.

Because of the unexpected success of International Club I , a second International Club was formed in 1954 following the same guide lines. In 1955, International Club Ill was organized with each club having only ten members from the Diplomatic Corps and

ten Congr essional wives .

The International Neighbors Clubs I , II, and Ill were founded in 1956 and 1957 . Each of these clubs had thirty members . Ther e were three categories for membership: Diplomatic, Congressional , and Washingtonian (which included Administration and

residential women.)

Each club operated individually with its own by- laws, but the principle of the "Four P's"prevailed. They are -- NO POLITICS, NO PROTOCOL, NO PUBLICITY, NO PROJECTS (except the promotion of world wide good will and better under standing .

The first presidents of each of the clubs were:

The birth of two new clubs occurred in 1969 and 1970. They are International Club IV and International Neighbors Club IV , with Mrs. Thomas Kleppe, North Dakota and Mrs. John Rhodes , Arizona

as the presidents .

After the six original clubs were formed , the feeling existed that there was a need for a greater number of women to be given the opportunity to participate.

International Club I (I. G. C.) was founded at the home of Mrs. E. Ross Adair on Tuesday, May 5, 1953, at 3:00 P. M. The purpose and choice of members, as then defined , was "to form a club composed of diplomatic and congressional women. The members were chosen because of two qualifications: (1) interest in and desire to help organize the group; (2) 'geographic location."

A second meeting was held on June 5, 1953 , at the Canadian Embassy wi th Mrs. Hume Wrong as hostess. During this and subsequent meetings, a format for entertaining was developed and the charter members were chosen. They were :

According to the minutes of February 19 , 1954, "It was decided to ask Mrs. J. W. Fulbright to join the group which would make the Congressional category four Republicans and four Democrats." The husbands of this group were all membc..rs

of the Foreign Relations Committee in the Senate and the Foreign Affairs Committee in the House.

Because of the unexpected success of International Club I, a second International Club was formed in 1954 following the same guide lines. In 1955, International Club III was organized with each club having only ten members from the Diplomatic Corps and ten Congressional wives.

The International Neighbors Clubs I, II, and III were founded in 1956 and 1957. Each of these clubs had thirty members. There were three categories for membership: Diplomatic, Congressional, and Washingtonian (which included Administration and residential women.)

Each club operated individually with its own by-laws, but the principle of the "Four P's" prevailed. They are -- NO POLITICS, NO PROTOCOL, NO PUBLICITY, NO PROJECTS (except the promotion of world wide good will and better understanding.)

The birth of two new clubs occurred in 1969 and 1970. They were International Club IV and International Neighbors Club IV, with Mrs. Thomas Kleppe , North Dakota and Mrs. John Rhodes, Arizona as the presidents.

After the six original clubs were formed, the feeling existed that there was a need for a greater number of women to be given the opportunity to participate.

Because of the limited memberships of the six clubs, a new group was organized with an unlimited membership, and it was called "Welcome to Washington." In 1959, this club started with two hundred members, half Internationals and half from the United States. It has now grown to a strong organization of over eight hundred women representing sixty-four different countries. The four P's are observed also in this club which is now known as "Welcome to Washington International Club." The presidents were:

When Welcome to Washington was founded, there was a dream that it would be only the first of many other "Welcome" clubs to be organized in the great capital cities of the world. That dream has now become a reality with the organization of the first sister club in Brussels, Belgium, called "Welcome to Brussels."

In 1970, a second "Welcome club was founded in Canada and named "Welcome to Ottawa." Welcome to Washington has had exchange visits with each of these clubs.

Because much of the social activity of Washington is conducted on a large scale, the six original clubs were purposely designed as small intimate groups which would foster the development of close friendships. The success of all of the clubs has demonstrated that this concept was correct.

International Club I (I. G. C.) was founded at the home of Mrs. E. Ross Adair on Tuesday, May 5, 1953, at 3:00 P.M. The purpose and choice of members, as then defined, was " to form a club composed of diplomatic and congressional women. The members were chosen because of two qualifications: (1) interest in and desire to help organize the group; (2) geographic location."

A second meeting was held on June 5, 1953, at the Canadian Embassy with Mrs. Hume Wrong as hostess. During this and subsequent meetings, a format for entertaining was developed and the charter members were chosen. They were:

According to the minutes of February 19, 1954, "It was decided to ask Mrs. J. W. Fulbright to join the group which would make the Congressional category four Republicans and four Democrats." The husbands of this group were all members

of the Foreign Relations Connnittee in the Senate and the Foreign Affairs Committee in the House.

Because of the unexpected success of International Club I, a second International Club was formed in 1954 fo llowing the same guidelines. In 1955, International Club III was organized with each club having only ten members from the Diplomatic Corps and ten Congressional wives.

In 1956 The #1 International Neiehbors Club was formed with a larger membership from the Diplomatic, Congressional, Administrative and Residential categories. The International Neighbors II and III clubs were formed in 1957, each with thirty members from the enlarged categories of membership.

Each club operated individually with its own by-laws, but the principle of the "Four P's" prevailed. They are -- NO POLITICS, NO PROTOCOL, NO PUBLICITY, NO PROJECTS (except the promotion of worldwide good will and better understanding).

The birth of two new clubs occurred in 1969 and 1970. They were Internationa+ Club IV and International Neighbors Club IV, with Mrs. Thomas Kleppe, North Dakota and Mrs. John Rhodes, Arizona as the presidents.

After the six original clubs were formed , t he feeling existed tha t there was a need for a greater number of women to be given the opportunity to participate.

Because of t he limited memberships of the six clubs, a new gr oup was or ganized with an unlimited membership , and it was called "Welcome to Washington . " In 1959 this club started with two hundred members , half Internationals and half from t he United States. It has now grown to a strong organization of over eight hundred women representing sixty-four different countries. The four P's are observed also in this club which is now known as "Welcome to Washington International Club . " The presidents were:

When "Welcome to Washington" was founded , there was a dream t hat it would be only the first of many other "Welcome" clubs to be organized in the great capital cities of the world . That dream has now become a reality with the organization of the first sister club in Brussels, Belgium, called "Welcome to Brussels."

In 1970, a second "Welcome" club was founded i n Canada and named "Welcome to Ottawa ." "Welcome to Washington" has had exchange visits with each of these clubs.

Because much of the social activi t y of Washington is conducted on a large scale , the six original clubs were purposely designed as small, intimate groups which would foster the development of close friendships. The s uccess of all of the clubs has demonstrated that this concept was correct.
