INTRODUCTION

You will be working as part of a fun and passionate team to define and implement our strategy across membership, communications, income and events programming. You will be committed to our mission to break the cycle of homelessness and work creatively to engage our community to do this.

As part of our community, we hope you will be excited to work and play here and build a programme of music, impact and culture events that everyone wants to be part of; to deliver income, retain our members and convene discussions that further our impact.

With a new CEO in place and joining at the beginning of year one of our five-year strategy, there will be ample scope for you to help shape and build the future of the House of St Barnabas.

We’re open-minded about the experience needed for this role; you could come from a private member’s club, arts and culture organisation or membership organisation - or something else entirely - and we welcome applicants with both private and voluntary sector experience. The key thing is that you can develop concrete plans to deliver our strategy and commercial objectives; that you can lead and inspire a department to turn those plans into reality and that you’re up for having fun along the way.

Come help us break the cycle of homelessness, one cocktail at a time.

Rosie

Thank you for your interest in the magnificent House of St Barnabas.

Our work today is informed by our belief that employment is one of the most effective routes out of homelessness. We have created an ambitious new integrated social business model running a not-for-profit members’ club at No 1 Greek Street. The Club provides part funding for our charitable Employment Academy - and also a supportive environment where graduates can get work experience and mentoring support as they go through our programme.

Our approach is driven by our mission; to break the cycle of homelessness. We aim to create the strongest community of people who are invested in creating a fair and equal society, and a future where lasting work is a reality for people affected by homelessness.

We recognise that gaining and maintaining paid work is instrumental to independence and security, and that in a society where there is so much disconnect it is important to have an environment where people feel connected. This is why we embrace the support and collaboration of our members and partners in all that we do.

We are now looking for a new Director of Engagement and Curation who is a strategic and commercial thinker with exceptional relationship-building skills and a creative vision, to help lead our social purpose private member’s club into the next phase of its life.

WHO WE ARE AND WHAT WE DO

“ENTER THE HOUSE OF ST BARNABAS - A PUBLIC-MINDED PRIVATE MEMBERS’ CLUB IN LONDON IS DEMOLISHING STEREOTYPES” DAZED AND CONFUSED

Our vision is of a future where lasting good work, a secure home and a supportive network are a reality for those affected by homelessness.

Our mission is to break the cycle of homelessness.

We deliver our mission through our Employment Academy, through which participants experience a holistic programme of long-term support, helping them secure good work, a good home and a good network. When this programme is in progress, participants take on work experience throughout the House, in the club spaces and in our offices. The House of St Barnabas team act as professional buddies, working closely with them to provide skills training and to set a positive example of ways of working. This one to one support throughout the programme, and our wider club community of members and supporters, provides a supportive environment in which our participants can challenge themselves to change their lives.

Over the five years since our Employment Academy launched, 190 people have successfully graduated from our programme. On average 63% of our participants move into employment and 52% are still working over a year later. We deliver two programmes a year and with ongoing mentoring support we work with just over 100 people across the year. 80% of graduates gain City and Guilds qualifications in Business Administration or Hospitality.

Underpinning our Employment Academy is our vibrant member’s club based in our grade 1 listed building, right in the heart of Soho. Our member’s club further deepens our impact by:

• Providing a network for our participants of supportive mentors, employers and friends

• Offering a training ground for those returning to work through real-world work placements in hospitality and office-based roles

• Convening creative conversations across sectors and disciplines working to break the cycle of homelessness

We fund our work through the profit we make from membership and private hire, combined and matched with fundraising.

In order for our model to work, we aim to run an outstanding private members club; bringing together a diverse community of creative people who care about social change. We want them to experience high quality food and drink, a personalised service and an engaging offer of culture and events that entertain and enlighten.

OUR HOUSE

Our Grade 1 listed townhouse and Gothic Chapel, steeped in history, create a unique and special space. We encourage and enable our members to connect, discuss, create and exchange ideas. Our diverse programme of members’ events includes intimate live music performances, regular DJ sets, tastings, interviews with people of note, craft workshops to refine or unleash your skills, first-class festivities to celebrate those special occasions, plus comedy, poetry and theatre. We also surround ourselves with a changing roster of beautiful and thought–provoking contemporary art, and an eclectic genre and decade hopping soundtrack.

We have exciting plans for the future. We intend to support those already in work but who want to progress from a first job after homelessness to “good work”, with better pay, more regular hours and better prospects for promotion, and we intend to increase provision through our accommodation pathway. To do this we will need to grow our commercial income from both the club and private hire (including a potential building development project). We also want to better use the skills and connections of our community of members and supporters in pursuit of our aims.

THE FUTURE

Over the next five years we will:

01 Increase our depth of support for Employment Academy graduates into both Good Work & Good Home increasing from 5% to 50% of working graduates gaining both.

02 Engage our community to increase our impact, income and influence.

03 Provide a high-quality hospitality offer, supported by a strong F&B partnership.

04 Invest in our people, become an employer of choice and a beacon of good work in hospitality.

05 Grow our whole House income to £5m (£3m social business + fundraising; £2m F&B).

06 Invest in our buildings and infrastructure to underpin our impact and income ambitions, ensuring we are carrying out our custodian duties.

House of St Barnabas values

WE ARE INCLUSIVE We are creating an environment where all people can thrive. We understand the positive impact that difference has.

WE ARE ENCOURAGING St Barnabas is known as the son of encouragement and encouragement underpins all that we do working with people. We understand that change is not a linear process, that people can move through positive and negative experiences and that we all need support throughout our lives.

WE ARE FAIR In a complex world we seek to do what is right and increase access to opportunity.

WE ARE CREATIVE We are ambitious, we look for opportunities within our community and beyond, to increase the impact and value of our work. With limited resources available we know we need to be creative with what we have and agile in how we work with and through others.

FINANCIALS

Our accounts include the consolidated financials of both the Charity and our Trading Subsidiary. Our income has been steadily growing since 2015. We now have an ambition to grow this further from £2.3m to £3m over the next five years through membership and fundraising growth. This will give us the capacity to fund our strategic ambition above. We also aim to increase the food and beverage income of our catering partner from £1.5m to £2m, which relies on stronger programming and engagement of our music and events programme. The Director of Engagement and Curation will lead this growth, supported by a Head of Income and Fundraising team.
