CRUISERS:In its century-longdevelopment, the size, shapeand role of the hard-hittingarmored cruiser havetransformed itfrom

1889 1989commer~e raider to shepherd of the fleet,- but desplte many changes the naval

cruiser still reigns supreme

BYDONALDe.WENNER

In its century-long prominence in the USNavy, the role of the cruiser has changed little exceptin size, shape and weaponry. Often described

as ''Jack-of-all-trades:' today's fast missile-carryingcruisers trace a proud heritage all the way back tothe origins of steel-hulled, steam-powered warships which themselves had transmuted from thedays of fast frigates in the era of fighting sail. Earlyon, the cruiser was the tenacious "Bulldog" ofthe fleet, a warship capable of long range, speed, impressive firepower and the ability to give andtake a pounding from all but the largest dreadnoughts afloat. As such, the cruiser was, in the beginning, the ideal commerce raider - a lean, litheship that could strike hard and fast alone or as partof a fleet ofwarships. As the character ofnaval warchanged due to the advent of the airplane and submarine so did the modern naval cruiser adapt tonew needs and duties with amazing versatility.

In World War One the cruiser became the flagship of Europe-bound convoy escorts - the floating nerve center which effectively marshalled theefforts of escorting destroyers against Germany'sdreaded U-boats. With the fleet, the cruiser'sprimary responsibility was to screen the capitalships and, in the pre-radar era before World WarTwo,to act as the far-ranging "Scouts" of the mainbattle force. Indeed, cruisers played a vital role inevery US naval action in World War Two.By thenAmerican cruisers had evolved into four basiccategories - Light, Heavy, Antiaircraft cruisersand Battlecruisers. Though by early definition established in the London and Washington naval

treaties of the 1920s,cruisers could not be ratedover 10,000tons nor have guns in excess of 8-inchbores, there came into being twelve different classes of cruisers by the end ofWorldWar Two.Thosecarrying 6-inch guns were labeled "Light Cruisers"(CA) and those carrying 8-inch guns became"Heavy Cruisers:' designated CAs. Unique werethe elevenAtlanta-Oakland-classantiaircraft flotilla leaders armed only with eight, twin 5-inch DIPmounts and the two Alaska-class battlecruisers(CBs)which carried nine 12-inchrifles in three triple turrets. By the end of the war America had atsea or being built 74 cruisers. Ten had paid thesupreme sacrifice, thirteen had won the NavyUnitCommendation, three the Presidential Unit Citation and the type as a whole had won more thanthree hundred Battle Stars!

There are no gun cruisers in our modern Navy, but their mission role is largely unchanged froma century ago. Today's fast missile cruisers led bythe new Ticonderoga class are the most sophisticated warships in the fleet with their Aegis systemsbeing able to simultaneously track over 250targetsand guide nearly 25 intercepts at once. With anequal anti-submarine capability these vessels areconsidered the most formidable warships in anysurface force today. In reserve, .should oldfashioned fire support vessels be needed, are twoold war-built cruisers - the USS Salem (CA-139)and the DesMoines (CA-134).Like their sisters before them, they patiently wait, trusting that no future enemy will feel the force of their powerful8-inch guns fired in anger.
