Getting started First of all, there are two distinct employment sectors where Paramedics and Medics work.

1. Public Sector - Registered Ambulance Paramedic 2. Private Sector - Basic Life Support Medic & Advanced Life Support Medic

Educational pathways

1. Public Sector (Ambulance Paramedic) Complete the Nationally Recognised Diploma of Paramedical Science. Use this qualification as an entry pathway into university to study a Bachelor of Paramedic Science. The HLT51015 – Diploma of Paramedical Science (Dip Para Sc), provides the perfect introduction to Paramedicine and provides graduates with the underpinning paramedical knowledge to transition into university life with ease.

2. Private Sector. (Basic/Advanced Life Support Medic) Complete a Nationally Recognised emergency health care qualification in the Vocational Education and Training (VET) sector; HLT41115 – Certificate IV in Health Care, HLT51015 – Diploma of Paramedical Science (Dip Para Sc), and work as a medic in the private sector.

3. Public Sector (Ambulance Paramedic) Providing you have met the desired entry requirements, it’s possible to be accepted into university to study a three year Bachelor of Paramedic Science degree. This is the requirement to be eligible to become a registered Ambulance Paramedic.

What is the difference between an Ambulance Paramedic and a Medic?

Paramedic

A national scheme for paramedics was introduced in December 2018 and it is now compulsory under law, for every new Paramedic (who meets the requirements), to be registered by way of the Paramedicine Board of Australia. Only those who have applied for and been granted registration can legally refer to them as a ‘Paramedic’. The Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency (AHPRA) also regulates the paramedic profession and sets the standards and policies that every registered health practitioner must meet. A Paramedic at this level can be employed by a State-run emergency health care provider. Registered Paramedics are those who drive ambulance vehicles and respond to public emergencies. Note: you cannot be classed or referred to as a ‘Paramedic’ unless your registration has been approved. The prerequisite for registration is a Bachelor in Paramedic Science degree from an approved university, a proven track record working in the pre-hospital emergency health care sector for several years, or proof of continual clinical competency in a pre-hospital emergency health care environment.

Basic Life Support Medic/ Advanced Life Support Medic

Private Sector workers. Since the introduction of Paramedic registration, anyone not possessing an approved degree or has not been granted a registration number cannot refer to themselves as a Paramedic. Therefore pre-hospital emergency health care workers (private sector) can only be referred to as a;

o Basic Life Support Medic o Emergency Medical Technician o Life Support Medic (Advanced) o Paramedic Assistant o First Responder o Ambulance Attendant o Medic o Patient Transport Officer o Ambulance Driver

Note: Because a person does not have a degree, does not mean they are ill-equipped or incapable of saving lives. This is where there needs to be greater clarity between the scope of practice in the private and public sectors.

Recap: Pathways to a career in emergency health care

To become a registered Ambulance Paramedic, a degree is required

To work in the majority of roles in the private sector as a Basic/Advanced Life Support Medic, VET sector qualifications are all that is required – no degree is required

The degree pathway

If your goal is to become a registered Ambulance Paramedic, there are many universities offering the Bachelor of Paramedic Science. Some universities may call the degree Bachelor of Science (Paramedicine) for instance, however, for the most part; we will refer to the degree as the Bachelor of Paramedic Science.

Learn more about the Bachelor of Paramedic Science here No matter where you live in Australia, you can study the degree. Some universities offer the degree online, others will offer a blend of online/classroom lectures, face-to-face workshops and clinical placement, where you get to experience first-hand what it’s like on-road.

Paramedicine degrees can be completed in about 3 years.

Degrees are structured very differently from qualifications in the VET sector. A typical Bachelor of Paramedic Science is made up of 24 courses, divided into semesters, spread over 12 months. Expect to complete the degree in around 3 years of full-time study.

Components of a degree

The Australian Paramedical College reviewed the Bachelor of Paramedic Science by surveying 11 universities in Australia offering the degree. For the most part, the degree is structured into 6 topic categories.

1. Paramedic Practice 2. Paramedic Functions 3. Science & Biology 4. Community 5. Career Development 6. Personal Wellbeing

The curriculum will vary between universities, so be sure to do your research and choose the university that suits your interests - as well as providing you with the essential skills to manage the future demands of the job. Typically, you should be looking for universities offering education in mental health as well as leadership and management.

In most cases, Universities enforce strict entry requirements, so it does pay to do your own research.

Degree pricing

The Bachelor of Paramedic Science can be funded by way of a government HECS loan, which is repaid via the Australian Tax Office. Repayments can vary depending on your income; which for a Paramedic can be anywhere from $70,000 to $100,000+.

Industry recognition and qualification progression

Non-degree pathways

When beginning your studies at the Cert III, Cert IV or Diploma level, it’s important to note each health care qualification is recognised by industry and employers alike. Another important point to be aware of is these health care qualifications facilitate knowledge progression by sequentially studying each qualification; or by direct enrolment into a single qualification then moving on to the next AQF level. As mentioned earlier, qualifications have been meticulously designed to allow students to progress to more complex levels of study in a relevant and manageable way. Studying a Certificate IV, then a Diploma, builds knowledge on a solid foundation of paramedical concepts, such as biology, pathophysiology and pharmacology. Already completed subjects can be transferable and/or credited to the higher level qualification – from AQF level 4 to AQF level 5, meaning there will be no repetition of the same subjects; saving time and money throughout your training. Be aware, you may need to brush up on your clinical knowledge at some stage in your career. This forms part of your

continual professional development as a health care practitioner.

Private sector jobs

Patient Transport

If you feel like university is not for you (at the moment) and you prefer to start at the beginning and ease yourself into the world of emergency medicine, the Patient Transport sector is well worth looking into.

Here, your role is to drive non-critical patients to and from their home to a doctor’s surgery, or hospital. Patient transport is a rapidly-expanding sector across Australia, with private companies taking over patient movement operations from State-run health departments. For these types of jobs, you need the Certificate III in Non-Emergency Patient Transport and/or the Certificate IV in Health Care.

Ambulance Attendant The next level up from a Patient Transport Officer is the Ambulance Attendant, who may be required to monitor a patient requiring an extra level of care during their trip to and from hospital. For this role, it’s recommended to study the Certificate IV in Health Care and/or the Diploma of Paramedical Science.

Page 13: Diploma of PARAMEDICAL SCIENCE...The HLT51015 – Diploma of Paramedical Science (Dip Para Sc), provides the perfect introduction to Paramedicine and provides graduates with the underpinning

Basic/Advanced Life Support Medic/EMT There is a little-known area of emergency health care providing essential patient care and support; and that is the role of the private sector medic. It’s a rapidly growing sector, with good opportunities to develop solid careers. Private sector pre-hospital emergency health care workers can be called;

o Basic Life Support Medic (BLSM) o Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) o Life Support Medic (Advanced )(LSMA)

Private companies operating in every state in Australia can offer different types of jobs with varying responsibilities, skills and scope of paramedic practice. Basically, what this means is, each company has their own limitations as to what they can and cannot do when it comes to administering drugs and treating patients. Remembering of course, at the Certificate IV and Diploma level, the primary role of the private sector medic is to treat and stabilse the patient until emergency medical care can be administered by a Paramedic.

Jobs a BLSM, EMT, LSMA can do (no degree needed).

Event medic at the rugby, footy, soccer, tennis, golf, motor racing, triathlons, drag racing, extreme sports, community games, equine events etc.

Emergency Support Officer at public events, outdoor and indoor concerts.

Medic in the maritime industry travelling the world and visiting exotic locations.

Onshore and offshore oil & gas medic (additional training is required).

Basic/Advanced Life Support Medic in mining, offshore, construction, manufacturing, hospitality, sports and tourism industries.

London Ambulance Service Paramedic (Diploma of Paramedical Science required).

London Ambulance Paramedic

Just because you gained your qualifications in Australia, does not limit you to this country. There are unique opportunities for Australian Paramedical College Diploma graduates to be employed by the London Ambulance Service as a Paramedic, as well as working in other Commonwealth countries such as Canada. As an example, the London Ambulance Service (LAS) actively recruits newly-qualified APC Diploma students to become UK Paramedics. Confidential talks with LAS have revealed a unique once in a lifetime opportunity for APC graduates who seek adventure and travel.

Why? – because LAS recognises the excellent training and high-level competence of APC Diploma-qualified graduates across a range of clinical disciplines including pharmacology, trauma care and advanced life-support techniques.

“There are always enough places to accommodate new recruits from Australia”, said an LAS spokesperson.

“As long as applicants can demonstrate clinical knowledge and meet the standards and criteria, we encourage APC graduates to apply.”

Find out more about how to live and work in London and become a registered UK Paramedic.

How to become an Australian Ambulance Paramedic using the Diploma of Paramedical Science as leverage Another popular pathway to becoming a registered Paramedic is as follows;

1. Study the HLT51015 - Diploma of Paramedical Science (18-24 months) 2. Work in the private sector and gain essential on-road/face-to-face experience 3. With your experience and well-developed clinical knowledge, you’re ready to tackle

university head on to get that degree on your way to becoming an Ambulance Paramedic

The Diploma > Degree may seem like an odd pathway because why bother doing Diploma when there is the direct university option. It’s a great question; however, more and more people are taking this option and for many different reasons.

A gradual program of pre-hospital emergency health care education suits their budget and lifestyle – especially if most of it can be completed online

Many people don’t have the time, ability or confidence to commit to full-time university study without any previous knowledge of human body systems, physiology, anatomy, pathophysiology, pharmacology, trauma care and advanced life support techniques – it’s just way too stressful

The uncertainty of which pathway to take can be financially overwhelming, so testing the waters first doing a Cert IV/Diploma makes sense. Rather than spending tens of thousands on a degree, realising it is not for them and being stuck with a big HECS debt – the Diploma pathway is a safer option. Even after your first year at uni, studying a degree can leave you with a $20,000 loan to pay back.

Does the Diploma give credits towards the degree? Yes… APC graduates have successfully gained 30-33% credits towards the degree. Although we have to say, not all universities follow this rationale, especially when you consider how education pathways are developed by industry bodies such as the Australian Qualifications Framework (AQF). As mentioned earlier, the AQF designed the framework to allow sequential completion of qualifications from Certificate II through to PhD. Each qualification was designed to ‘plug in’ to the next level of learning and allow credits to for subjects already studied. This is a model that some universities do not follow.

Some universities refuse to accept a Diploma as entry into a degree program, despite the AQF recommending around 30% of a 3 year degree program to be credited to a person who has attained a Diploma in a related field of study.

Our advice is to check with your preferred university before making a decision about the Diploma pathway. Ask them if they recognise the HLT51015 – Diploma.

The Australian Paramedical College acknowledges the following universities who award APC Diploma graduates credit towards the completion of the Bachelor of Paramedic Science.

Central Queensland University (CQU) – Bachelor of Paramedic Science Edith Cowan University (ECU) – Bachelor of Science (Paramedical Science) Charles Sturt University (CSU) – Bachelor of Paramedicine University of Tasmania (UTAS) – Bachelor of Paramedic Practice 53A Victoria University (VU) – Bachelor of Paramedicine

A life-like scenario – meet Mitch and Mary

Mitch and Mary are typical of people who wish to work in an industry where saving lives and making a difference is part of the job. They never liked the idea of working in an office, yet the thought of having the freedom and variety the life of a paramedic offered appealed to them on so many levels. They would love to become a Paramedic, and they feel university can get them there, although they never considered starting out as a Basic/Advanced Life Support Medic because they never realised there was so much opportunity in the private sector. They had so many questions, like…where to even begin, what study is involved, what’s it all going to cost; and what types of jobs are available at the end of it all?

They also realised going to university was not possible at the moment so they decided to study the Cert IV and Diploma. They loved the idea of being able to study when it suited them best; plus, they could also study and keep working at the same time.

Enrolment day

The Cert IV and Diploma courses Mitch and Mary enrolled in are Nationally Accredited, so they knew that no matter where they live now, or wherever they decide to live in the future, their qualifications were recognised by industry and employers alike.

When Mitch and Mary enrolled at APC, they had instant access to the online learning centre. Everything they needed was right there. Studying on a tablet, laptop, desktop or even via the specially designed APC mobile app made things so much more convenient. It was effortless to study anywhere they liked and be able to complete their written tasks and submit their work via the APC mobile app. (iOS and Android) The app also means it’s easy to download the learning material and do the work offline. So no matter where they were, there were never any obstacles in their way of learning and getting things done.

They also enjoyed unlimited access to their APC student success team, trainers and educators as well as being able to mingle inside a huge community of students on the official APC Facebook private group page. This is what the college does best; supporting students throughout their entire learning journey. Even though for the most part, the learning is online – you’re never alone, there’s so much encouragement and support.
