CAREER OUTCOMES The programme has a strong practical and applied focus so NMIT’s work-ready graduates are in strong demand, particularly by local employers. As a graduate you may find employment as an Assistant Vineyard Manager, Laboratory Technician, Vineyard Supervisor, Cellar Hand or Cellar Manager. PROFESSIONAL COMMUNICATIONS Develop confidence and competence in oral communication, written communication and interpersonal communication. The subject emphasises the communication skills students will use in the workplace and during their degree studies.

HORTICULTURAL SYSTEMS Study of horticultural production and management systems. Case studies of selected systems to emphasise the role of management and the interdependence of biological, production, economic and marketing factors. The course aims to give students an overview of horticultural enterprise systems in New Zealand.

PRINCIPLES OF BUSINESS COMPUTING Gain a foundation knowledge of current and emerging information technologies and their impact on business along with the skills to analyse business problems and recommend appropriate solutions using information technology tools. Skills to apply a range of information technologies to general business situations.

PRINCIPLES OF MARKETING Gain a working knowledge of fundamental marketing concepts relevant to contemporary organisations.

PLANT SCIENCE An introduction to the structure and function of plants, with particular emphasis on the grapevine; An introduction to understanding the principles underlying how environmental factors affect plant growth in a range of plant types, as a prerequisite to being able to modify these factors to advantage; An introduction to the biochemistry with particular emphasis on the wine industry, emphasising protein and carbohydrate structures and functional role in metabolism. Laboratory classes and fieldwork are integral in obtaining the specified objectives.

WINE ANALYSIS Develop skills in wine analysis required for wine production, while emphasising laboratory safety. It provides introductory knowledge and skills in chemistry and microbiology applicable to wine analysis.

VITICULTURAL ENGINEERING This course provides an introduction to winery /vineyard machinery and equipment, which includes irrigation systems.

VINEYARD EXPERIENCE The industry based training periods within this course provide the opportunity for students to observe and participate in industry during the peak periods of vintage, pruning, and spring growth, and through this to consolidate and reinforce their classroom based learning. Students will also gain a range of practical vineyard management skills including operating machinery in a safe manner. Students will gain unit standards in GROWSAFE and emergency care procedures.

VITICULTURAL PRACTICES Gain core viticultural knowledge and includes climate, common grape varieties, canopy management, basic plant and grapevine physiology, plant husbandry and rootstocks within a viticultural context.

SOIL SCIENCE The course provides an introduction to the study of soils. Soil formation, soil parent material and profiles are discussed. Physical properties including texture, structure, and soil moisture are covered. Students will acquire the skills to interpret technical data and soil test results. They will be able to assess the suitability of soils for grape growing and where necessary develop an appropriate fertilizer programme.

VINEYARD BIOPROTECTION This course introduces you to the common pests, weeds and diseases associated with grape growing and wine production and provides core knowledge and skills to identify, describe and appropriately manage these in a wine industry context. An integrated approach to pest and disease management is applied to pest and disease management.

WINE PRODUCTION Gain a comprehensive introduction to the theory of wine production and establishes core competencies necessary to work in a winery. Students will have an opportunity to make their own wine. An appreciation of wine is developed. Regular tastings are a part of this course.

WINE SCIENCE Further develop your skills in advanced wine analysis used in commercial winemaking. The chemistry behind these techniques is examined.

VITICULTURAL SCIENCE Integrate the knowledge gained from other viticultural papers. Students acquire the knowledge and skills to make appropriate vineyard management decisions.

WINERY EXPERIENCE This period of eight weeks provides the opportunity for students to experience employment in a winery during the peak vintage period. Students will be contracted to one employer Students will participate in the full range of vintage activities and will complete the course having reflected on their suitability for and preferences within the industry.

WINE TECHNOLOGY AND EVALUATION This course gives students a greater understanding of winemaking techniques and the application of current technology to commercial wine production.
