PERSON OF THE YEAR 2018
Peter A. Betro, Jr.Located in the heart of Walpole, Betro Pharmacy was a trusted caregiver to the Community for 65 years, providing warm, friendly and personal service. Founded in 1952 by Peter Betro Senior, the pharmacy has always been dedicated to providing more than just medicine to its patrons. The Betro family and their employees made it a point to know their customers by name, and were committed to the health and well-being of all. This year’s honoree started working at the pharmacy in 1970, under the tutelage of his father, Peter Sr., who passed away in 1982 giving Peter the drive to take over the family business. After receiving a degree in accounting from Stonehill College in 1979 Peter went on to become a 1987 graduate of Mass College of Pharmacy. As the lead pharmacist at Betro’s, Peter treated his responsibilities with the same respect and care that his father had instilled in him. Betro Pharmacy was known near and far as a warm and friendly drugstore where you entered as a customer and left as a friend. Peter Jr. made it his mission that his customers would feel his compassion and concern for them. It was not uncommon over the years to watch Peter head out nights or weekends, regardless of the time or weather, to deliver a prescription for one of his customers ... very much the way his father had done countless times over the years. His attentiveness to his clients helped brighten many a senior's day, knowing they were well taken care of. While Peter endeared himself to the citizens of Walpole, he has a special relationship with its senior community - stop one of Walpole's seniors and mention Peter's name, and you will see a smile and a twinkle in their eyes that tells his story.
Aside from his local service to the Walpole community, Peter took on a very large role regionally in developing a model for Medical Delivery Systems for Group Homes in thearea. Peter was asked to - consult with state agencies through the Department of Mental Health, on building an efficient and transferable medical delivery system. This assisted many adult day care and day rehab organizations, including Horace Mann Educational Associates (HMEA) in Franklin as well as Riverside Community Day Care, a child and family service agency located throughout Eastern and Central MA. For his efforts, Peter was given the HMEA Citizen's Award in 1990, for assisting and developing their group home in Norfolk. In 2003, Riverside Community Day Care honored Peter with their Person of the Year Award.
Peter has been the recipient of many other awards given to him by his peers for his continued community service and dedication to Walpole. In 2002 he was named Person of the Year by the Walpole Chamber of Commerce; in 2008 Peter received the Alan D. Rockwood Community Service Award which exemplifies Walpole's spirit of sharing and giving back to the community. He continues to serve on the Walpole Housing Authority and became Board Chairman in 2016. He also serves as a Board Member for Walpole Media Corporation.
Peter is a life-long resident of Walpole who has devoted himself to his customers, his community and most of all his family. Peter's brother Joseph and his wife Judy are here today from San Francisco with their family. His sister, Maria still resides in Walpole and is in attendance to celebrate with him. Peter's lovely mother, Lucille, age 90, is here today to see her son honored once again by their community. It is with great pride that the Friends of Saint Patrick present Peter A. Betro Jr., one of Walpole's favorite sons, the 2018 Person of the Year Award. "SUPER DUPER"
Today's charitable recipients will be the Walpole Council on Aging and Walpole Smiling Eyes.

“The Friends of St. Patrick” was founded in 1987 in Walpole, Mass, by John D. Murphy and a small band of local citizens who realized the value of capturing the spirit of good will and good cheer that abounds each year on the feast of Ireland’s most famous saint.
It was agreed that the most appropriate manner of celebrating this event would be an annual luncheon in mid March at which time all people who shared that spirit would be welcome to join together in food, drink, laughter and song. In the spirit of its patron, each year the organization acknowledges the outstanding contributions of individuals and has donated over $445,000 to charities, including Longview Farm, Walpole Lion's Club, Walpole Food Pantry, Walpole Lion’s Club, Gift for Kids, Walpole Public Library, Pan Mass Challenge, Friends of St. Nick, Friends of Council Aging, Walpole Charity Golf Fund, Medical Missions, Rodman Ride for Kids, Blessed Sacrament School, Dana Farber Cancer, Walpole Ponds-The Lodge, Smiling Eyes, St. Vincent DePaul, and Joe Andruzzi Foundation.
A wee bit of the leprechaun’s magic is cast upon everyone who attends the luncheon and they are thereafter a lifetime member of “The Friends of St. Patrick” with the continuing obligation to spread good will and good cheer.
We hope you have enjoyed today’s celebration and until the same time next year:

The Story of St. Patrick
St. Patrick, The Patron Saint of Ireland, was not from Ireland at all. Patricius was born around 389 AD in Scotland, probably in Kilpatrick. His parents were Calpurnius and Conchessa, who were Romans living in Britain in charge of the colonies.
At age 14 or so in 403, Patrick was captured during a raiding party and taken to Ireland as a slave to herd and tend sheep in the Antrim/Mayo area. Ireland at this time was a land of Druids and pagans. He learned the language and practices of the people who held him.
After six years, he escaped his master and traveled, he estimated, about 200 miles to the southeaster coast. Penniless, he persuaded the crew of a ship to take him to Gaul where the crew landed unhappily in a desolate area. They nearly starved. But Patrick survived and managed to return to his family in Britain. But listening to what he called his inner voices, he was sure that the Lord destined him to return to Ireland. Shortly he returned to Gaul, likely to Lerins, an island off the south coast of Gaul where scholarly Egyptian monks founded a university, and then to Auxerre where he excelled in his studies.
Saint Germanus ordained Patrick a priest and later a bishop. Pope St. Celestine I, who had earlier sent a bishop (Palladius) to Ireland without notable success, now commissioned Patrick to go there as a missionary. He arrived March 25, 433 at Slane and began preaching the Gospel throughout Ireland and building churches all over the country. Kings, their families, and thousands of ordinary folk converted to Christianity upon hearing Patrick’s message. Patrick by now had many disciples, among them Beningnus, Auxilius, Iserninus, and Fiaac. All were later canonized.
He received a commendation from Rome, likely from Pope Leo, and in 444, the Cathedral Church of Armagh was declared the site of the Primatial See of Ireland. It quickly became a major educational center. Many of Patrick’s decrees and the records of an early synod are available to us in the Collectio Canounum Hibernensis to which two bishops, Auxilius and Iserninus, attached their names as bishops in southern Ireland.
From other sources, we learn of Patrick in his last years as being deep in prayer. At Croagh Patrick, it appears he enjoyed a mystical experience in which he saw something of the long term accomplishment of his labors.
Legend has it that Patrick during his preaching used the shamrock to explain the Trinity, and this is why the familiar green plant has been associated with him and the Irish since that time.
Patrick preached and converted all over Ireland for 30 years. He worked many miracles and wrote of his love for God in “Confession”. After years of living in poverty, traveling and enduring much suffering, he died March 17, 461 at Saul, where he had built the first church. St. Patrick is buried in Downpatrick.
