FOLLOWING CHRIST. If you’ve ever had an unpleasant but somewhat amusing practical joke played on you, then you have some understanding of how Jeremiah feels today when he tells God “good one—you duped me.” We can almost see him shaking his head with a bit of a rueful
smile, but an angry undertone in his voice. In similar fashion, Peter thinks Jesus is “duping” him when Jesus starts to explain that being Messiah means suffering and dying, and being a follower of the Messiah means taking up a cross and doing the same. Jeremiah tries to deny God’s will for him by trying to shut up; Peter—who has just been made the foundation of the church—out and out denies the teaching of Jesus, for which he is named “Satan” today. Fortunately for us, Jeremiah comes to realize that to have the word of God placed in your heart means that it will be futile to try and keep silent, even if it means scorn and derision from those around you. Luckily Peter ultimately returned to the faith he professed in last week’s Gospel, and came to understand our need as baptized followers of Christ to follow in his way, even when it means following him to our very death.

Flowers on the altar this weekend were provided by Alison & Sean Valdepeñas in loving memory of Marine Lance Corporal Eric Paul Valdepeñas on the Anniversary of his passing; and, by Bob & Carla Sharpley in celebration of their 51st Wedding Anniversary.
A Message from the Most Rev. Robert E. Guglielmone, Bishop for the Diocese of Charleston.
“In response to the overwhelming devastation from Hurricane Harvey, I ask that you please take up a special collection for the victims of the storm. during the weekend of September 16-17, 2017. All the money collected will be given to
Catholic Home Mission, a sub-committee of the USCCB (U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops.) As you know, South Carolina residents are familiar with the misery and distress that is occurring in Texas. So many people helped us when we were suffering as a result of floods and hurricanes; it is now our turn to assist our brothers and sisters. Thank you for your support and prayers for the victims of Hurricane Harvey.” A Collection will be taken up the
weekend of September 16-17, 2017.
If you write a check, please make it out to OUR LADY OF THE LAKE and write "Hurricane Harvey" in the memo field. You may also contribute on-line by going to the Parish website at www.ollchapin.org and click on ON-LINE GIVING.

Our heartfelt sympathy goes to Danny & Theresa Wilds and Family on the passing of Danny’s sister, Lori Chassereau. Our thoughts and prayers are with the family and their loved ones.

Turning the Tide
Are you feeling frustrated at the
apparent inability of politicians to find
positive solutions to fix society’s
problems? Perhaps we need to think
smaller, understanding that the greatest
effects on society are wielded within our
own families. Speaking from his
perspective as a historian, Christopher
Check reminds us that the crisis of our
age is cultural and, in the end, spiritual. He explains that a
flourishing society is not achieved through legislation or at the
ballot box, but instead radiates from the family out. Using
examples from the ages, he connects us with our rich
patrimony as Catholics and provides practical advice on what
we must do to transform our culture for Christ.

WHEN. We convince ourselves
that life will be better after we finish school, find a good job, get married, or have children. Then we are impatient because our youngsters need so much time and attention, or we’re frustrated dealing with teenagers. Better
days must be just around the corner. We tell ourselves that our real life will start when our spouse gets the big promotion; when we can find that better job, take a vacation, or retire. Yet life will always be filled with challenges and hard times. It’s best to admit this and decide to live in the here and now! Someone once said, “For a long time it seemed to me that life was about to begin—real life. But there was always some obstacle in the way, something to be gotten through first, some unfinished business, time still to be served, a debt to be paid. Then life would begin. At last it dawned on me that these obstacles were my life.” So treasure every moment that you have, beginning today. Stop waiting until you finish school, until you go back to school, until you lose ten pounds, until you gain ten pounds, until you have kids, until your kids leave the house, until you start work, until you retire, until you get married, until Friday night, until Sunday morning, until you get a new car or home, until your car or home is paid off, until spring, until summer, until fall, until winter, until you are off welfare, until the first or fifteenth, until your ship comes in, until you've had a drink, until you’ve sobered up, until you die—to decide that there is no better time than right now. Living is something you do now or never.
Living Stewardship Now If today were your last day on earth, what is the one thing you would need to do to die in peace? Make that happen.

Do you own a small business? If so, we have a unique opportunity for you! We will be setting up a table in the Silent Auction area for small businesses to display their business cards, brochures, promotional material, coupons, etc. so parishioners can identify the small
business owners in our own parish.
In addition, a website, www.churchfamilybiz.com, has been created to provide an online directory for parishioners in need of business services to connect to the small business owners in our parish.
