Know that He has Created You for a Specific Mission in this World The Lord has loved you into being, and even before the moment of your concep on has had a plan for your life. God the Father has created you for some specific mission, and wants to reveal it to you. The Venerable John Henry Cardinal Newman wrote, “God has created me to do him some definite service; He has commi ed some work to me which he has not commi ed to another. I have my mission… He has not created me for naught. I shall do

good, I shall do His work; I shall be an angel of peace, a preacher of truth in my own place, while not intending it, if I do but keep His commandments and serve Him in my calling.” Jesus loves us so much that He invites us to help Him save the world. He alone is the Savior, but He opens up His life to us that we too may share in this work. So the first step in discerning your voca on is to understand that God has created you out of love and in His love invites you to share in His work of salva on.

CALLED BY GOD Today's scriptures invite us to listen to two calls. The first is the call issued by the LORD to the prophet Amos, the "shepherd and a dresser of sycamores" (Amos 7:14). The second is the call the Lord Jesus issued to the Twelve, whom he sent out "two by two" (Mark 6:7). These faith-ful people responded to the call, prophesying and preaching to the people to whom they had been sent. Each of us received a call when we were bap zed. The second reading invites us to ponder that call as we are reminded that we are chosen in Christ and that, in love, God "des ned us for adop on" (Ephesians 1:5). As adopted daughters and sons of God we are called to bring the presence of Christ into our mar-riages, families, schools, and places of work. Our Day of Adora on may not be returning as planned in the fall. We have had three people who were serving as Guardians of the Eucharist call to say that they would like to con nue as Guardians beginning in September. No one has called to say that they would like to begin serving as a Guardian. Again, we were having Adora on from 8:00 AM –6:45 PM, a 10 hour day. We need 3 Guardians per hour for a total of 30 who are willing to spend a quiet hour with Jesus. With a 10% response to our request, the future of our Day of Adora on is very much in ques on!!! If you have been pu ng off calling or just forgot, please do it soon so that we can hopefully plan a date to start again.

Texas Knights #1 in Charity - Again! For the 4th consecu ve year, Texas has topped the field for volunteer hours and charitable dona ons among all the areas where the Knights of Columbus are ac ve. In 2017, members in Texas volunteered almost 5 million hours in service to their parishes and communi es and donated almost $10 million to charity. Almost $1 million went directly to our Bishops' designated diocesan ministries. From all across the organiza on, almost 2 million members in 17 na ons volunteered over 75 million hours and donated over $185 million to charitable causes, se ng new record highs in 2017. Be a part of something great; come and join us! We are running this one more me so that we can share the ac vi es of our Knights of Columbus here in our community. Most of us see at least some of the wonderful things they do for our parish; their dona on of money for our annual Fes val Raffle, se ng up for funeral meals, helping with any heavy li ing especially during our recent move and helping out with our Wednesday evening youth meals during the school year. In addi on to that, they are very ac ve in the community of Dumas. Con nue to build ramps through The Texas Ramp Project (9+/- this year so far) New Orleans Night fundraiser (this fundraiser provides us the means to make dona ons.) Grilled for the CareNet banquet. Grilled burgers for the Gradua ng Seniors. Grilled for The American Legion Target Shoot. Every Spring they go Prayertown to help with the Spring Cleanup. Made dona ons to the West Texas A&M Catholic Student Center Fundraiser. Made dona ons to The Disciples of Our Lord Jesus Christ. Interested in something great? Pero, con la reforma del Concilio Va cano II este pobre santo se quedó sin trabajo sólo por el hecho de no poder comprobar su existencia. No fue que la reforma del Concilio Va cano II quisiera haber negado al pobre de Cristóbal ni a tantos otros santos que fueron quitados del Santoral Romano. Sólo buscaba hacer lugar para nuevos santos y beatos; y menos mal, porque eventualmente el Papa Juan Pablo II canonizó y bea ficó a más de mil personas durante su pon ficado. Muchos de estos santos no son tan bien conocidos como nuestro amigo san Cristóbal. Aunque ya no está en el calendario eclesiás co, Cristóbal con núa en los tableros de muchos carros ofreciendo su servicio de protección para los automovilistas. Esta chambita la consiguió porque ayudaba a cruzar el río a personas en camino, hasta que un día le tocó cargar con el niño Dios. TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION Last week's Treasure men oned the "Nuns of the Ba lefield," religious sisters from several communi es who served as nurses in the Civil War. Florence Nigh ngale had only ins tuted female nurses a decade before in the Crimean War, so the idea of women tending to wounded soldiers was extraordinary. The medical and sanitary condi ons on the ba lefields were appalling, and the sisters were nearly all teachers. Few had any medical training beyond what they had learned as youngsters in the family. An -Catholic prejudice was so deeply entrenched in America that sisters could not wear their habits in public. These sisters were the first, and people on both the Union and Confederate sides soon began to marvel at their bravery, efficiency, and respect for Protestant soldiers. More than six hundred sisters from twenty-one communi es went to war, serving in wretched condi ons. They were tough and single-minded, efficient and fearless. A er the war, sisters could appear in public everywhere in the reunited na on, and o en received the praise and gra tude of grateful soldiers and family members on behalf of their sister nurses. An outdoor monument to the "Nuns of the Ba lefield" stands in Washington at M Street and Rhode Island Avenue. This is a big deal for us right now as this directory we are crea ng will be an important part of the history of Saints Peter and Paul Catholic Church in Dumas. This directory will show all the people involved with the building of our new Pastoral Center. Our goal is 100% par cipa on. So, we are ge ng the dates out now so that everyone can plan to be here one of the following dates to get your picture taken!!!! We are in need of someone to take on this project for our parish, scheduling the appointments for the photo sessions will be the first step and there are some who parishioners who would like to do that now. Faith Forma on registra on has ended for this year. If you are new to Dumas you may stop by and visit with us about registering your children. We do verify through the public school that the students are new to Dumas. Our classes will begin on September 12th for our Wednesday evening students and September 16th for our Sunday students. There will be no Monday classes this fall as the Sacramental Prep classes that were held on Mondays can now be moved to the grade appropriate day. Second through Fi h grade Sacramental Prep classes will now be held on Sunday mornings at 9:45 and 6th through 8th grade Sacramental Prep classes will be on Wednesday evening beginning with Mass at 6:15 PM. The 9th-12th grade Sacramental Prep classes will not change, they will remain on Sunday mornings and begin at 9:45.

TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION At the me of the Reforma on, although England broke away from papal authority under Henry VIII, a silent majority clung to the Catholic faith. Henry's eldest daughter, Mary, restored the "old religion" in a fierce persecu on of Protestants (she is called "Bloody Mary" for good reason.) His youngest daughter, Elizabeth, rejected papal es. Under her reign, beginning with legisla on in 1593, Catholics were persecuted again, and only the very wealthy could afford the fines for not a ending Anglican services on Sunday. They were called "recusants," from a La n word meaning "refuse," since they refused to a end the liturgy of the Church of England. Many families maintained Catholic tradi on in secret, and today their descendants claim "Recusancy" as a mark of family pride. For genera ons they sent their young people abroad to be educated in convents and monasteries. It is not surprising that the first monastery in colonial America springs from Holland with the daughters of patrician English recusant families. TRADICIONES DE NUESTRA FE Mañana celebramos la fiesta de Nuestra Señora del Carmen, reconocida en Chile como Maipú. Chile es un país con mucha industria marinera y la Virgen del Carmen es la patrona de los marineros por el peligro al cual se exponen en el mar. Los frailes Carmelitas han difundido la devoción a la Virgen del monte Carmelo desde el siglo XIII. En aquella época María regaló el escapulario al general de los Carmelitas, Simón Stock, prome endo que todos los que lo usasen serían recibidos por ella en el cielo, evitando así el infierno. Con el empo el escapulario Carmelitano se modificó para uso de todo cris ano. Por esto ella es patrona de todo oficio que ene peligro de muerte como el de los soldados, camioneros, pilotos, troqueros, etc. Por entender el escapulario como algo mágico, Nuestra Señora del Carmen ha sido tomada como patrona de los pandilleros porque viven en peligro de ser matados en sus riñas callejeras. Festival Updates Food Booths: Tortas, Gorditas, Protein Shakes, Pozole, Sticky Rice, Nachos, Rooster Eggs, Egg Rolls, Brisket Burritos, Barbacoa Burritos & Tacos, Cotton Candy, Curly Fries, Asado, Agua Frescas, Tamales, Champarrado, Cookies, Ice Cream (note all booths should provide some kind of drinks, water, lemonade, soda etc. ) Other Booths: Vocations, First Aid, Face Painting, Balloon Animals Other Activities: Volleyball Tournament The tickets are leaving the church, some have come back in accompanied with the money. If you have sold tickets, please don’t wait to turn them and the money in to the parish office. It helps us to know if we need to print more tickets and also how are sales are going. If you complete a book in sales, please drop it by the office. As you can see there have been a few booths register for our Festival, we need some new things, please think about what you can do that is different than the above. There is no chicken at all, maybe someone could think about doing hot wings or fried drumsticks. There are no funnel cakes, those always go well. We have had shaved ice before and no one is signed to do that. Corn dogs are another option. Pickles, donuts, cupcakes, sopapillas, and you might have an even better idea. Don’t be afraid to try something, it just might work!!! The meat and bread order were compiled after the meeting this past week. JBS Cactus has been very supportive of us in the past. We may not get everything we ordered but we always get a lot. Be prepared to supplement with purchased products if all is not donated. Keeping the park clean and presentable will help our sales. Be careful to make sure that trash goes in the proper receptacles. If you see an overflowing trash can let someone know or take care of it yourself. There will be liners available at the bank. As always, remember, you are the face of the Catholic church to those who attend. Be pleasant, kind, loving and friendly.

If you are bringing a dish that you wish to have back for fundraisers or celebra ons in our new hall, please make sure that you pick it up a er the event is over. If you can not be there at the end of the event, please make sure you have someone pick it up for you. We cannot be responsible for dishes that are le a er an event is over. Please don’t wait to get these items picked up. Any containers le in the kitchen will be considered disposable and will be thrown away. These cannot be just le laying in the kitchen for weeks or months. Again if you want the container or pan, pick it up immediately a er the event is over.
