    AVAILABLE GRADES

All standard stocks are supplied in a mild-steel (4.6) and alloy-steel (8.8) condition, however,

any material can be catered for, including stainless steel and most non-ferrous exotic materials.

    APPLICATION & USE

Square Square bolting is mainly used in foundations prior to concrete being poured. When

used in partnership with matching anchorages with square holes, the under-square of the bolt

head locates in the anchorage to prevent the bolts rotation after installation.

Void formers or bolt boxes are commonly used to create a parallel or tapered void around the

bolt to enable bolt adjustment. Void formers are available in several materials, the most

popular Polystyrene, Waxed Cardboard and Expanded Metal.

    INDENTED FOUNDATION BOLTSDIN529 Pattern-E Grade: 4.6

    VOID FORMERS

    Conical, Polystyrene, Expanded Metal

When installing foundation bolting, specifically SSOX, instances arise

where a pocket or void is required around the bolt, to allow for easier

adjustment even after the concrete has been poured and set.

The former is simply placed over the inverted bolt, fitting flushwith the plate washer or anchorage. The formers can be left in

situ until the concrete has set or in the later stages of the concrete

setting when the former can be rotated*, breaking the bond with

the concrete and removed allowing for grouting around the anchor

after setting the bolts in their final position.

We offer three alternative products for this purpose in Polystyrene Tapered Cones, Hollow

Waxed Card Cones, cylindrical 'Expamet' wire mesh sleeves.

CONICAL BOLT BOXESWaxed cardboard void former

provides an easy method of bolt

    alignment for steel frame buildings.

    EXPANDED METAL

    BOLT BOXESExpanded metal void former

    designed for positioning hold-

ing down bolts where the bolt

    box remains in the concrete.

When imperial indented foundation bolting (IFB) to BS.1494 was made obsolete, no

equivalent was issued and therefore, when they were converted over to metric sizes, they were

replaced by and manufactured in accordance with DIN.529, Pattern E.

AVAILABLE GRADESAll standard stocks are supplied in a mild steel (4.6) condition, however, any material can be

catered for including Stainless Steel, Alloy Steel (8.8) and most non-ferrous exotic materials.

    INSTALLATION METHODS

The best results are obtained when IFB's are placed in situ when the concrete is poured. When

this is not possible or when fitting to existing structures, the hole required should be 6-10mm

larger than the maximum diameter (E), and not less than 10mm deeper than the portion of

embedment (D). The prepared grout mixture should then be poured into the cavity and the

bolt inserted, ensuring that the bolt is rotated to released trapped air pockets.

It is important to allow the grouting mix to set thoroughly before loading the bolt.

POLYSTYRENE BOLT BOXESThis Polystyrene void former offers

a low cost method of forming a

    cavity in foundations for holding

down bolts. Core diameter for bolt

    approximately 25mm.

We can also offer Circular Hollow Section tubes (CHS) in any diameter, loose or as part of a fabricated foundation base assembly,

or other forms of void former to individual specifications. * ONLY POLY & WAX TYPES, EXPAMET ARE PERMANENTLY EMBEDDED.

HIGH STRENGTH FRICTION GRIPBS4395 Part 1 General Grade Bolts

HIGH STRENGTH FRICTION GRIPBS4395 Part 1 General Grade Bolts

Sometimes abbreviated to HSFG bolts. Bolts which are of high tensile strength used in

conjunction with high strength nuts and hardened steel washers in structural steelwork. The

bolts are tightened to a specified minimum shank tension so that transverse loads are

transferred across the joint by friction between the plates rather than by shear across the bolt

shank. Friction Grip Bolting provides a simple method of transmitting loads through a

structural joint, by the friction on the contact face, developed through the high clamping force

from correctly tightened high strength bolts.

HSFG are fitted in clearance holes and since the connection is designed to resist slip, they are

not subject to bearing or shear forces and therefore remain in virtual static tension throughout

    their life.

    CALCULATION OF CORRECT BOLT LENGTHS

The 'grip' length, i.e. the total thickness to be bolted, should be added to the length indicated

to the table below. This measurement allows for the inclusion of one nut and one flat round

hardened washer. An additional allowance should be made for the inclusion of a load indicat-

ing washer, nut faced washer or additional hardened washers by adding 3mm in each case.

    DIRECT TENSION INDICATORS (DTI) BS4395/A959M

The load indicating washer is used under the head of the bolt

or under the nut in conjunction with a 'nut-faced' washer,

where the 'pips' flatten when tightened to a specific

gap, measured by a feeler gauge. This offers a precise

and fool proof method of ensuring the bolt is tightened to the correct shank tension.

The specific gap required for all HSFG Pt. 1 is a minimum of 0.4mm if used under the head. If

used under the nut in conjunction with nut-faced washers then the gap should be 0.25mm.

    THROUGH HARDENED WASHER

The force under the head of a bolt or nut can exceed,

at high preloads, the compressive yield strength of the

clamped material. If this occurs excessive embedding

and deformation can result in bolt preload loss. To

overcome this hardened washers under the bolt headcan be used to distribute the force over a wider area

    into the clamped material.

There are SIX main advantages using HSFG over standard hexagon bolting:

ECONOMY - Fewer HSFG are required than black mild steel bolts or rivets they are aneconomical alternative to turned barrel bolts requiring close tolerance holes.

RELIABILITY - Once tightened, the bolts will remain tight and maintain the permanentstrength of the joint.

SIMPLICITY - A minimum of skill is required in tightening and operators need only follow a

few simple rules. CONVENIENCE - Whether in the shop or on the site, HSFG bolts enable joints to be made

easily. Welding of site splices can be eliminated, avoiding the difficulties of welding inadverse weather conditions.

FASTER ERECTION - HSFG have been chosen for many projects on account of speed atwhich they enable steelwork to be fastened

EASE OF INSPECTION - When the (DTI) Load Indicator method of tightening is used avisual check is all that is usually required.

    TIE-RODS & TIE BARSMetric & Imperial

    ENGINEERING STUDSDIN938 & DIN939: Metric

    PRODUCT SPECIFICATION

Engineering studs are available in several

standards determining the thread lengths of

both the metal end and nut end. The metal

end B is normally taken off the overall giving

the nominal length L. The overall length

determines thread lengths for the nut end.Available in all standard grades. All other

sizes are made to order up to M100 dia.

    PRODUCT SPECIFICATION

These round steel bars can have either clean-sawn or cropped ends. Intended for use in

expansion or contraction joints, a wide range of standard sizes are available for immediate

    delivery.

Available in mill length to 12,000mm/40ft and up to 100mm/4inch diameters, the DinStock

tie-rods may be cut to a specified length before shipment to the jobsite. We can also offer roll-

threading on effective diameter bars M6-M39.

    AVAILABLE GRADES

We hold stocks of mild steel (4.6), high tensile (8.8), and Stainless Steel Grade A2 & A4 to

cater for immediate same-day manufacture requirements. Other materials we offer include

Brass, B7, B8, and other exotic non-ferrous materials.

When ordering DinStock tie-rods it is important to specify, the diameter (A), the thread

length (B1 & B2), the overall length (C), material grade, and finally the thread form.

Our friendly, helpful staff will be happy to assist you with your specific requirements. Please

call our team on 01952-676700 for more information.

    CORROSION PROTECTION

An important element in the long-term durability of any tie-rod installation is corrosion

protection. A number of possibilities exist depending on site conditions and degree of

exposure. Examples of successful corrosion protection currently in use are:

Electro Zinc Plating Galvanizing Sherardizing Epoxy Coating DENSO Taped, Pasted, and PVC Wrapped

ATTENTION: when ordering studs according to DIN the diameter D x the effective length L has to be stated e.g. stud M10 x 65 -DIN 939 where L = 65mm is the working length and B 1 = 12mm the metal end. The total length is 65 + 12 = 77mm. Thethread length on the nutside B2 = 26mm. The screw-in threaded end has been made with tolerance Sk6, acc. to DIN 13-51,meaning heavy fit, and prevents loosening of studs during disassembly. Studs acc. to DIN 939 with a metal end 1,25D havemany applications, among others is cast-iron.

    (1) Depending on availability class 5.6 can be supplied. (2) L 125mm. (3) 125mm < L 200mm. (4) The threadlength on thenutside B2 at this length deviates and can be calculated with following formula: B2=L-(X1+3).

HEXAGON CONNECTION NUTSDIN6334 Mild Steel & High Tensile

Hexagon Connectors, also commonly known as Studding Connectors or Couplers, are

predominantly used as a method of extending tie-rods and allthread bars. The rule concerning

their installation is simply that 50% of the connector should be engaged on each part being

joined to ensure the tensile strength is maintained.

Most connectors are manufactured from mild steel hexagon bar, in some cases round bars,

being drilled and tapped 100% of its length internally. Whilst it is advised to seek a higher

strength material grade when applications involve the extension or connection of 8.8 grades

and higher, independent tests have been performed to ensure compatibility with use on highergrades including 8.8.

All of our standard range of connectors will be supplied as Grade 8 or will be advised that

they are compatible for use up to 8.8 grades. We stock a comprehensive range of metric sizes

up to M36 with sizes M39 and above manufactured to order with a few days lead time.

    AVAILABLE GRADES

All available in self-colour, zinc plated, and galvanized tapped oversize from stock. Other

finishes and materials are available on request.

Bolt Extensions are also available, but supplied as a headed hexagon blank, drilled and

    tapped internally. Dimensions not shown.

    PRODUCT SPECIFICATION

Collared or dynamo eyebolts are available for many different uses. Dynamo eyebolts make

provision for vertical lift only; if used in pairs a spreader frame is required. Capacities range

from 0.10 to 3.20 tonnes. Collared eyebolts (not shown) make provision for angled lifts (i.e.

using a two leg sling) recommended not to exceed 45 from the vertical. Capacities range

from 0.10 to 20 tonnes (metric sizes start at 0.10 tonne).

    APPLICATION & USE

Dynamo eyebolts may be used up to the marked safe working load (SWL) for axial lifting only.

For non-axial loading ensure the SWL is reduced by the appropriate factor. In non-axial

loading the load should be applied within 5 of the plane of the eye.

The bolt threads bite into the nylon insert to

prevent nuts from working loose. Not

recommended for use in high temperatures.

Once removed, it is recommended to re-

install new nuts for best retention of locking

properties. Note: all galvanized nyloc nutsare tapped oversize by 0.4mm to ensure free

    fitting to galvanized bolting.

It should be understood that the subject of torque tensionloading is beyond the scope of this catalogue. The informationhere supplied is an acceptable guide for normal conditions;for critical applications, however, further information andresearch will be necessary.

In preparing this guide to torque values, the following basicassumptions have been made:(a) bolts and nuts are new, standard finish, uncoated and

not lubricated*(b) the load will be 90% of the bolt yield strength(c) the coefficient of friction () is 0,14(d) the final tightening sequence is achieved smoothly and

slowly, until the torque has been obtained.

    * If lubrication has been applied to the bolt and/or the nut(other than the normal protective oil film), multiply therecommended torque by the appropriate factor shown in thetable.Example: Bolt and nut are both phosphated; required torque= torque recommended x 075.

Why is torque necessary?Torque is a 'turning' or twisting force and differs from tension which iscreated by a straight pull. However, we use torque to create tension. As can be seen, once the nut and bolt are tightened the two platesare clamped together. The thread angle in the bolt converts theforce applied into tension (or stretch) in the bolt shank. Theamount of the tension created in the bolt is critical.

When a bolt is tensioned correctly it is working at its optimumefficiency and will resist coming undone. However, if thetension is too low, the nut could vibrate or workloose. If the tension is too high (over-stretched),

    the bolt could break.

Every bolt has a correct optimum torque/tensionfigure for each fastening application. It isimportant to have these figures available so thatthe end product will be safe, efficient and economical.

It should also be realised that some torque wrenches are "lengthdependent" which means that the actual torque applied to thefastener varies if the hand position on the wrench is varied - evenwith the wrench is preset! This occurs if the pivot point of the wrenchmechanism is not coincidental with point of application of torque.

Hot Dip Galvanizing BS729The immersion of steel in molten zinc creates a toughprotective coating which is metallurgically bonded to the steel. It also has amazing electrochemical properties whereby thesteel is still protected from corrosion even where thegalvanizing has been chipped or scratched. Being animmersion process all internal surfaces of a fabrication receivethe same level of protection, giving hot dip galvanizing itsreputation for a 'Heineken' effect.Externally exposed

galvanizing on heavy steelwork is now lasting an average of40 years in the UK, with lifetime continuing to increase as acidrain concentrations decline. Over 730,000 tonnes of steel werehot dip galvanized in the UK alone in 1999.

Zinc Electroplating BS1706Widely used by industry in general, and automotivemanufacturers in particular, electrodeposited zinc givessacrificial protection to the underlying iron or steel, that is thezinc corrodes in preference to the underlying metal. This hasthe additional benefit that steel exposed at cut or abradedareas will not easily rust.

Bright zinc gives reasonable protection at fairly low thicknesses, typically 8, so is ideal for small components such as machinescrews with fine threads.

10 Zinc Average thickness. The relative corrosionperformance of coatings is often assessed using neutral saltspray testing. During electroplating, hydrogen is evolved at thesurface of components and can embrittle hardened steel

    components.

Sherardizing BS4921Sherardizing is a diffusion process in which particles areheated in the presence of zinc dust. The process is normallycarried out in a slowly rotating closed container attemperatures ranging from 320-500 degrees centigrade.

The resultant zinc/iron alloyed coating is subsequently zincphosphated or chromated, resulting in a clean, passivated, matt grey surface. The coating closely follows the contours ofthe base material and uniform coatings are produced onarticles, including those of intricate shapes. Carbon steels, lowalloy steels, sintered steels, malleable grey iron and cast ironare suitable for sherardizing. The process does not give rise tohydrogen embrittlement.

Sherardizing benefits include: Long Term corrosion Protection,Coating Thickness range available 15-80m, Salt SprayResistance, Sherardizing - 96 hours, Sherardizing 2000 - 500hours, Damage Resistant, and Uniform Coating.

DACROMET 500 LCFasteners are subject to ever-increasing demands with regardto their reliability and resistance to corrosion. These stringentrequirements present serious dilemmas for you. On one hand, strict reliability requirements mean that you are forced to usehigh quality fasteners (quality class 10.9 and higher). On theother hand, these fasteners are expected to have the sameminimum corrosion resistant properties as the other parts ofthe product.

Until recently your choice was restricted to less reliablesolutions.

If electro-galvanizing is chosen for high quality fasteners thereis a conscious risk of fractures as a result of hydrogenembrittlement. If you choose a more reliable surface coatingsuch as thermal galvanizing of screw threaded products, youare not only restricted in terms of dimensions but also in termsof the fit of the internal and external screw thread. In order tocarry out thermal galvanizing of relatively thick layers of zinc, some material has to be removed before galvanization. Thismeans that the flank covering between the internal andexternal screw thread is lower which has negative

    consequences on the load capacity.

However, if you specifically choose electroplating of a zinccoating and you want to suppress completely risk as a result ofhydrogen embrittlement, then the choice of high qualityfasteners is out of the question. In this case you will have torely on lower quality fasteners with greater dimensions as aresult. The new DACROMET 500 LC Grade A nonelectrolytically applied surface coating eliminates all of theserestrictive and high risk considerations.

What is DACROMET?DACROMET consists of an inorganic support to whichextremely fine zinc and aluminium particles are firmly attached. These particles have been passivated to optimise the corrosionresistant properties.

How is DACROMET 500 LC applied? The products are cleaned thoroughly beforehand andsubsequently immersed in a water-borne dispersion of zinc andaluminium flakes with low solvent content. Centrifuging is used

to remove the excess solution on the products, and the mineralstructure of the coating is obtained by reaction at appr. 300C.This process is repeated several times until the requiredcoating thickness is obtained.

What is the layer of thickness ofDACROMET 500 LC OFFER?For DACROMET 500 LC Grade A the minimum coatingthickness for fasteners is usually 5m. Grade B, which isavailable upon request, has a layer thickness of 8m andoffers even better corrosion protection.

What degree of corrosion protectiondoes DACROMET 500 LC OFFER?DACROMET 500 LC Gr ade A offers corrosion protectiondepending on the environment. It is several times greater thanelectro-galvanizing and can compare favourably in givenconditions with the protection given by hot dip galvanizing.

Compare salt-spray tests in accordance with ASTM B117 /DIN59021 and values in accordance with DIN50961.

    (1) For class 8.8 in diameter d = 16mm there

is an increased risk of nut stripping in the

    case of inadvertent over-tightening

inducing a load in excess of proofing

load. Reference to ISO 898-2 is

    recommended.

    (2) For structural bolting the limit is 12mm.(3) Applies only to nominal thread diameter d

    = 16mm.

    (4) Min. tensile properties apply to products

    of nominal length l = 2,5 d. Min.

    hardness applies to products of l < 2,5 d

and other products, which cannot be

    tensile-tested (e.g. due to headconfiguration).

    (5) Surface hardness shall not be more than

30 Vickers points above the measured

core hardness on the product readings of

both surface and core are carried out at

HV 0,3. For class 10.9 max. surface

    hardness = 390 HV.

    (6) In cases where the lower yield stress Relcannot be determined, it is permissible to

    measure the proof stress Rp0,2.

Scope and field of applicationThe property classes and their mechanical properties apply to bolts, screws and studs, with metric (ISO) thread, with nominal

thread diameter d = 39mm, made of carbon steel or alloy steel and when tested at room temperature.

They do not apply to set screws and similar (see ISO 898-5) or to specific requirements such as weldability, corrosion resistance,

ability to withstand temperatures above +300C or below -50C. The designation system may be used for sizes (e.g. d > 39mm),

provided that all mechanical requirements of the property class are met.

Designation system of property classesThe property class symbols, indicating the most important mechanical properties, consist of two figures, one on either side of adot. For example, 10.9. The first indicates 1/100 of the nominal tensile strength in N/mm 2 (See Rm in the table).

    So property class 10.9 has a tensile strength 10 x 100 = 1000 N/mm2.

The second figure indicates 10 times the ratio between lower yield stress Rel (or proof stress Rp0,2) and nominal tensile strength

    Rm (yield stress ratio).

    So at property class 10.9 the second figure 9 = 10 x (900 1000).

    The multiplication of these two figures will give 1/10 of the yield stress in N/mm 2, so 10 x 9 = 1/10 x 900 N/mm 2.
