Welcome to the first issue of INSPIRED!

The creative team have been working hard to get this out just 13 days before All Hallows Eve. We’re still a work in progress, but it has been such fun working on the magazine and with all the contributors. We’ve packed this issue with lots of Halloween treats, plenty of photography for visual inspiration, and inspiring interviews and articles.

We’ve received lots of photographs, illustrations, and videos, which is great, but we’d like to appeal to those of you who feel you have nothing to contribute. We need more articles and would like you to submit film or book reviews, invites to events, adverts for your own products, articles around cinematography, architecture, theatre…the sky’s the limit!

We’d like to say a very big thank you to all of our artists who have contributed, we could not have done this without you. We started this project only a month ago and have somehow managed to complete it in time (we had a slight hiccup when Cassie decided to spill tea on her macbook halting the design process a week!)

Please read, devour and dissect this issue! Let us know your comments and opinions, what you would like to see more of, or possibly take inspiration to create your own work to submit!

Once again, thank you to everyone who has helped us make our whimsical idea, a reality.

Catch you all in December for our next issue!

INSPIREDONLINE XOXO

"It was, as I have said, a fine autumnal day; the sky was clear and serene, and nature wore that rich and golden livery

which we always associate with the idea of abundance. The forests had put on their

sober brown and yellow, while some trees of the tenderer kind had been nipped by the frosts into brilliant dyes of orange,

purple, and scarlet."

We caught up with Catriona Taylor a Central St Martins Graduate and current Leader of the Arts to talk about art, hocus pocus & dancing till you die...

INSPIRED - So Cat, what it was that interested you to The Legend of Sleepy Hollow? Are you a fan of early american fiction or did you like digging deeper to its german folklore roots? You've focused on the tree as the main source of symbolism to capture your take on this old folktale instead of the well known headless horseman - why is this?

CAT - Autumn is my favourite season, I find the changes happening in nature exciting, where objects and colours are able to transform, shift and resolve into something far more enjoyable. I suppose I did not literally want to illustrate that of Irving’s novel, but rather I wished to extend upon the visual nature of his prose. My interest in trees stems from my almost nomadic way of viewing, exploring and documenting- these images have been composed over a length of time, from Wakefield to Pontcanna, Blean to Elveden. The drawings perfectly evidence my interest in colour for example and the

p r o c e s s u a l n a t u r e o f d r a w i n g , i t s fragmentation and unveiling as constituted by marks. The paper becomes that of receiver, ultimately holding the documents of my activity.

I N S P I R E D - A s a p r a c t i s i n g a r t i s t predominately of  post- conceptualism and a leader of arts what is your manifesto to creating artwork with such an innovative and intellectual approach? CAT - I think when you develop as anartist you go through various stages of thought and ‘mantra’s’ that you then apply to your current practice. In early 2000’s I was dealing with the idea of not thinking, just making. This shifted into the concept of destroying in order to make, and by mid 2000’s, it was about what others thought rather than what I did.

So where am I now? Being inspired, making and continuing to think and challenge is certainly something I try and instil within my own leadership. Although being in a state of flux from teaching to making, it is difficult to work out which direction my art work can and will go in. I cannot say that I have a definitive manifesto to create art work- I am working primarily after the fact of conceptualism, I create works that involve a kind of social anthropology, a looking at my habitus (Bourdieu) and finding the comical juxtapositions that are left open ended, for the viewer to narrate or extend upon. The work has the visual austerity of conceptualism but radically departs from it, working more which subtle subversion of the image and context.

What is your fondest halloween memory?

In 1993 I took a trip to the Odeon to watch Hocus Pocus, a film where SJP was to make her debut and Omri Katz would make my heart swoon. Although Halloween has meant a lot more than trick ‘o’ treat, ghouls and vampires- this film made me think of the lighter side, the funnier side, the ‘dance until you die’ side.

What is your thought process while you are sketching? Is everything carefully dissected and carefully selected or is there a most haphazard spontaneity that results in your work palpable?

CAT- Spontaneous, ordered, systematic, unconscious, rhythmic, thought-out, emotive, expressive, sculptural, structured…I tend to flit through a number of scenarios in my head when drawing, the outcome is never planned, I have a sense what I know I want and with this, I will know if a drawing is finished or not. I draw quickly, with a purpose, an energy almost-sometimes not looking at the paper until I have finished. There may even be a contrived naivety to all of it, but I enjoy it, no in fact I love drawing.

INSPIRED - What it is that inspires you with photography:

SE - I love to capture the beauty in people and try to tell a story though imagery. I love the imagination involved with fashion and want to portray that in my work. When someone looks at my images, I want them to step into my imagination and see my world. With Photography, you can portray the world a certain way, the way you see it, and that what I like to do.

INSPIRED - Where your aspiring to go?

SE - Everywhere! I want to just draw more and more strength in what Im doing and learn as much as possible. Ideally I would like to travel to beautiful

places, shooting beautiful people.

INSPIRED What is your fondest Halloween memory?

SE - Halloween for me as a kid was all about watching movies, Hocus Pocus, with Bette Midler and SJP - I love the story, the set design, the costumes.. I watched that movie as a kid and will still watch it now. When I got older, it was The Craft with Neve Campbell and Fairuza Balk - I loved the dark, gothic, yet preppy story.

INSPIRED - What projects you have been involved in recently:Ooh, of the ones I can divulge information about, I have been shooting some amazing models, signed and unsigned. Some gorgeous fashion and

also doing some charity work. I also continue to shoot my 365 project everyday this year, I have only two months to go.

HOW TO CELEBRATE DAY OF THE DEAD

With Sugar Skulls designs becoming increasingly popular within art, tattoo’s and

gifts and day of the dead such a high profile festival anyway it seemed only natural to give a

rundown on the best way to celebrate this colourful mexican holiday.

DAY OF THE DEAD IS A TIME TO CELEBRATE THE LIVES OF DEPARTED LOVES ONES. IT IS BELIEVED THAT THE SOULS OF THE DEPARTED RETURN ON NOVEMBER 1ST “ALL SOULS DAYS” TO VISIT THEIR LOVED ONES STILL LIVING

★ BUILD AN ALTER WITH FAVOURITE FOODS AND MEMORIBILIA WHEN THE PERSON WAS LIVING

★ WRITE THEM CALAVERAS

★SET OUT PILLOWS & THROWS SO THE SPIRITS CAN REST AFTER THEIR JOURNEY

★ MAKE OFRENDA FOOD FOR THEM

★ MAKE SUGAR SKULLS TO DECORATE AND EAT

★ CELEBRATE! IT IS A TIME TO REMEMBER THE HAPPY TIMES YOU HAD WITH THEM!

★ DRESS UP, WEAR SHELLS & DANCE AWAY TO WAKE UP THE DEAD

★ CREATE A CATRINA FIGURE

★Día de los Muertos★PAGE 20

Page 22: Dinner with the Zombies

We are a big fan of lush for a number of reasons. Firstly the heady smell that you can sniff of for miles when near any LUSH shop. Secondly, their ethics. They do not test on animals and their against preservatives and excessive packaging. Their inventive, handmade and fun - all the best things. For halloween they’ve got four products that are just well, LUSH!

They have skeleton shower jellies, mexican sugar skull bath bombs called Skulldiggery which claims to be an eerie but magical celebration for your bathtub.

Lady Catrina - their Día de los Muertos soap is a scream-worthy investment for the after effects of those haunted house parties. Its sure to shake off the cobwebs of the night

before and bring you back to the living...

Your either going to love or hate LUSH... I’m an obsessive fan and wave the handmade cosmetics flag to anyone who says otherwise, but I do urge you to go test these out for yourself. They look wonderful and smell even better!

With eyeshadow names such as absinthe and potion bottles of primers all in elaborately decorated containers its very hard not to fall in love with make up brand Urban Decay.

Their pallete boxes are named after grimoires (otherwise known as ‘Book of Shadows’) and come in an array of intense, longlasting colours.

Their beauty with an edge, with specialised vegan friendly products and are always pushing the alternative boundaries in a classy, sophisticated way. Need we say more?

KATE SOMMERSUNIVERSITY STUDENT AT LONDON COLLEGE OF COMMUNICATION

'Preston Manor' was a take on the ghost who is said to haunt the servants' stairway in the manor house in Brighton. I went on a ghost walk there last

Halloween and this very ghost whispered in my ear! I wanted to keep to a very simple narrative of this character making his way up the stairs, using a method

called pixelation. I deliberately made the images blurry and scratched into every image by hand to make it dark and frightening.

I was inspired to make 'Lazzaretto Nuovo' by my trip to Venice in the spring. It is a city with so much history - a lot of it very dark and menacing. I was mostly attracted to the image of the death mask and how terrifying it is. I chose to use paint on glass to give a watery feel, to echo the blood and water and the history of glass in the city.

I am studying animation at London College of Communication and am in my second year. After I graduate I hope to join a film or animation studio or set up my own company.

Halloween is my favorite holiday! It's like my Christmas! Every year when I was young, my auntie would make a Halloween feast and put labels on all of the food to say that they were something creepy - for example Tomato Ketchup would have a new label with 'blood' written on it and hard boiled eggs would be 'eyeballs'! She would also put small circles of brightly coloured paper over all of the eyes of people and animals in photographs around the house, so that they looked like they were glowing!

PHOTOGRAPHYRachel Tucker is a Kent based photographer. She is soon to start her Multimedia Journalism Degree at Canterbury University while freelancing her skills as a photographer inbetween.

Teamed with her Nikon D3000 with a Speedlite YN465 Rachel can capture the the atmosphere around her with evocative memories & excellent lighting techniques. Rachel may edit occasionally in Photoshop but she is a firm believer in making the most of what she has in front of her

and using her clear skill to bring her work to life.

The Inspired team instantly fell in love with her raw ethics & photography and so decided to hunt her down to find out just what inspires this up and coming visual artist...

RT - I mainly take photographs of live shows, or band promotions but I do occasionally go down the fashion/portraiture route in my free time. I think music based photography mainly appeals to me because of the amount of lovely people you meet, the

atmosphere of the shows and knowing that you’re all there to have a good time. The most important thing to me is to definitely capture the emotion of a musician through the photograph. I want people to look at the image and feel what it felt to be there at that time. I usually try and achieve this through lighting and manipulating the shutter speed.

we have been collecting victorian taxidermy for about a year now and have some pieces we are really fond of.... the flamingo is the current favourite and stands in our living room - the fox head is my personal favourites

Karen Unrue

Theres a strange taboo that comes with Taxidermy. For years I’ve had what you would call a not so secret obsession with taxidermy and I was fortunate enough to be introduced to the mysterious and intriguing Karen Unrue.

A former mental health worker Karen began collecting taxidermy and now has taken this obsession one step further by being taught this art form professionally.

It all began when she discovered a stuffed blowfish and instantly fell in love. She then branched out into the weird and wonderful and have some Victorian rogue taxidermy such as a winged kitten, as well as the traditional deer head.

Karen explains that Taxidermy has a reputation for macabre creepiness, but when it's done well, it's really beautiful and there is a stigma that it's mainly

older people who have these in a corner of their home and that it's not fashionable.

Karen and her partner are still studying and plan to one day open their own shop in this field.

If you have any questions for Karen or want to know about workshops or even just pictures please contact us at [email protected]

FILMLISTBY ROSE ANNE COOKWhilst many consider horror films as the Halloween tradition, serial killer and alien films that may fall within the horror genre don’t necessarily fall within the category of Halloween movies. Halloween was traditionally a festival to celebrate the transition from the light part of the year into the dark. It was believed that the veil between the real world and the spiritual world was at its thinnest during this time, allowing spirits and demons to enter our world. Thus Halloween is can be interpreted as a spiritual festival, and any film with paranormal activity, including those about witches, ghosts, vampires and zombies, can be considered perfect to capture the true spirit of Halloween. Consequently, Halloween films tend fall within various genres such as Horror, Thriller, Fantasy, Family and even Comedy, making it difficult to compile a list of quality films to choose from for a Halloween night-in. I have been surfing through every list of top Halloween movies to bring together the ultimate list of Halloween films (the scare appeal decreases as you move down the list):

The Shining (1980)

Director: Stanley Kubrick

Plot Summary: Jack Torrance (Nicholson) accepts a job as a winter caretaker of a hotel that only opens in the summer as the snowy roads deny access in the winter. As Jack and his family settle in for the isolated winter ahead, strange and unexplainable things being to happen. Jack becomes increasingly violent and his son begins to have horrifying premonitions…

Carrie (1976)

Director: Brian De Palma

Plot Summary: Carrie White is a shy teenager who is bullied by her fellow students and repressed by her mother. A prank at the prom causes the

social outcast to lash out at her school prom using telekinetic powers to gruesome effect.

The Amityville Horror (2005)

Director: Andrew Douglas

Plot Summary: A family is terrorised by demonic forces after moving into a home that was the site of a grisly mass-murder.

Hocus Pocus (1993)

Director: Kenny Ortega

Plot Summary: After 300 years, 3 sister witches are resurrected in Salem Massachusetts on Halloween night, and it us up to 2 teenagers, a young girl, and an immortal cat to put an end to the witches reign of terror once and for all.

Page 43: Dinner with the Zombies

Sleepy Hollow (1999)

Director: Tim Burton

Plot Summary: Ichabod Crane (Depp) is an 18th Century New York City investigator sent to a small town to look into 3 mysterious decapitations. He arrives at the little Dutch village to find that the townsfolk believe the culprit to be the Headless Horseman.

Interview with the Vampire (1994)

Director: Neil Jordan

Plot Summary: Less than a year after a plantation owner, Louis, lost his wife and child, a vampire Lestat offers him the chance to become a creature of the

night. Louis accepts, but must now learn the ways of the vampire and let go of his human wants and needs.

Shaun of the Dead (2004)

Director: Edgar Wright

Plot Summary: Shaun (Pegg) lacks any real ambition, drifting along in a job that he hates, gets a very rude awakening when

the undead begin roaming the earth. With the help of his slacker friend, Ed (Nick Frost), he must save his girlfriend and his mum

from becoming zombies.

28 Days Later (2002)

Director: Danny Boyle

Plot Summary: A group of animal rights activists discover caged chimps are forced to watch horrifying and violent images in a primate research facility. Ignoring the warnings of the researcher, they begin to free the animals and are immediately subjected to a bloody attack from the enraged creatures. 28 days later, Jim awakes from a coma in a deserted intensive care unit, to discover that an infection transmitted by blood causing the victim to be overwhelmed with a murderous rage within seconds, has overrun Britain. Along with a small group of survivors, Jim set out to Manchester where their last hope of survival lies in the hands of a group of soldiers who claim to have the "answer" to infection.

“ I find infinite joy in mixing typically dark styles of funeral mourners, goths and witches with light pastels and cute things. I feel Rodarte and Meadham Kirchhoff are brilliant at combining this aesthetic in their collections.”Sarah Deetz

Sarah Deetz a fashion blogger born and bred in South East London always give a fresh and intellectual approach to fashion. She manages to bottle up a hedonistic nostalgia of past experimental fashion outfits though her life focusing predominantly on her teenage ‘Courtney Love’ years for a cutting edge approach to fashion Vivienne Westwood would be in awe of. We got sarah involved who has a wonderful blog post on the memoirs of a Halloween-a-holic!

SD - Goosebumps, along with Point Horror and Stephen King dominated my library card

loans aged 10. I had an adoration of the 'Horror' genre from a young age, I'd watch films like 'The Lost Boys' (1987) and 'Nightmare on Elm Street' (1984) or black comedies like 'Serial Mom' (1994) and 'The Burbs' (1989). I would stay up with my friend watching them whilst eating sugar cubes until morning. These elements inspired my outfit yesterday. The acidic colours of Goosebumps covers remind me of Halloween candy and make me wish I had a sticky slime necklace or Goosebumps slap bracelet.

“I'm totally into her dreads with the looks she pulls together photographed in either chaotic teenage bedrooms or in real classy places like graveyards or grey rooftops with a wash of grey sky (reminds me of my home town).”Sarah Deetz

I like the stories of R. L Stine, not because they are executed amazingly or are challenging to read at twenty-two, but because they merge elements of horror with the cartoon, it's the slapstick of children's horror fiction. I've been re-reading a few of my favourites and have enjoyed the adjective-heavy prose and deep sentences which flow on like existential poetry. The covers reminded me of the skeleton print fabric I'd had sitting on my floor unused. Felt it necessary to make a bewb cover with it. The fabric also ties in with the video games 'Maniac Mansion'and 'Grim Fandango' by Lucas Arts graphic art.The leather jacket is an iconic piece was chosen as reference to the film 'The Lost Boys'. A leather jacket  traditionally  signifies a tough character but the metalwork and

corset back 'femme up' the piece which makes it tie in with the rest of the outfit.I won't bore you with a long essay on the significance of purity and virginity within Horror films today, but I warn you it could be written very soon. Thinking about all this horror is getting me pumped for Halloween - maybe I'll cast some spells or whip out the ouija board.

GRACECOOKE

I enjoy creating artworks that revolve around nature, animals and family. Capturing characters and the essence of life is what I find most exciting.

- Grace Cooke

Grace Cooke is a technical artist and illustrator whose work is sure to inspire any aspiring artists. The magical stories and beautiful illustrations from authors such as A.A. Milne, Enid Blyton, Shirley Hughes and Roald Dahl have continued to inspire Grace’s creative works.

Her obsessions with animation began at early age, fuelled by the characters from the Looney Toons, Walt Disney films, Don Bluth animations, Nick Park’s “Wallace and Gromit”, and Jim Henson’s “The Muppets”.

Grace developed her artist skills by experimenting with various materials such as cardboard, tin foil and twigs. She then went on to study for a BA

degree in Technical Arts and Special Effects at the Wimbledon College of Art.

Besides looking after her cat Madame Mitzy and her two dogs Muffin the Scavenger and Kodie Bear the Indestructible, Grace continues to create stunning and exciting works art, some of which can be seen on her website:

www. gracecookeartwork.com

We will be including a more in-depth article on Grace and her work in our next issue. If you want to know more about what she does, please email, Facebook or tweet us your questions.

Here at INSPIRED we’ve grown quite attached to Moses Kanneh. Moses is the type of guy who likes to get down and messy with art, delving deep into its histories and always finding a way to create work that is so unique and unusual. He’s currently working towards a FDA Animation Degree at the prestige London College of Communication alongside other contributors such as Katie Sommers. Moses came to us with an excited glint in his eye, itching to get submitting to our halloween issue. A philosopher at heart, while doing some initial sketches he pondered over what halloween was really about. His contribution is a fantastic intial idea for a current animation he is doing at university “The Ghould of Creativity”. The name itself ignites so many possibilities! To me it reminds me of a Poe from Ledgend of Zelda (but I have a habit of trying to link everything back to Zelda!) but I wanted to get the full story behind this enigmatic piece of artwork.

INSPIRED - So Moses what is the concept behind The Ghould of Creativity?

MK - I created something which was at first, quite cleshay. I’m the type of artist that tends to go for the more unsual stuff especially when you think of halloween against the usual commercial side of Halloween. So I decided to create a character design of a main character to represent the darker side of halloween, a ghoul shall we say. He may not be a zombie that craves brains but he devours art & creativity in a positive way.

INSPIRED - A fantastic representation Moses! So does this stem from your childhood memories of Halloween?

MK - I dont really have memories of Halloween I was always the one to forget it was halloween until trick or treaters turned up at the door! My parents never used to buy any sweets so the whole experience was quite comical.

INSPIRED - And can you tell us your plans of what you want to do once you’ve finished universtiy?

MK - I definitely want to work in the animation industry. Possibly character design or a main animator for film/tv. I would also like to try concept design. Im a big fan of Dream Works Studio and want to work day work for them or have my own company creating major motion pictures like a favourite of mine Kung Fu Panda! I have alot of aspirations and want to try a whole spectrum of fields for animation such as entertainment, education, fashion & design. VANISHING DAYS

URBAN EXPLORATIONARRON FULKER PHOTOGRAPHY

Arron Fulker, a self-taught photographer, began by photographing his friend’s bands and pursuing urban exploration. He is now branching out from digital to film and is creating some exciting works. His passion for photography began at a young age and has continued to inspire him to progress his abilities in photography.

Urban exploration is the examination of the normally unseen or off limits parts of urban areas of industrial facilities.

The most enjoyable aspects of urban exploration for Arron are the tranquillity of the surroundings and the opportunity to see things that others cannot. We’ve only included a small fraction of Arron’s work in this issue, but if you love his photography as much as we do and want to see more, check out his website:www.vanshingingdaysphotography.com
