My work to reform Michigan auto insurance system continues

By State Rep. Jason Sheppard, R-Temperance As many of you already know, I have intro-

duced a bill to address our state’s auto insurance system each session since I was first elected to the House of Representatives. Recently, my colleagues and I joined with Representative Lana Theis, the Chair of the House Insurance Committee, to unveil the latest proposal to try

to reduce the rates we pay for auto insurance in Michigan – which are now the highest in the nation according to a recent apples-to-apples comparison by insure.com. That is a No. 1 ranking no state wants.

The current auto no-fault system is causing a severe fi-nancial strain on families in Monroe County. Day after day, I receive countless letters, emails, and phone calls from residents who ask the same question: why are our rates so much higher than our neighbors’ in Ohio? After much dis-cussion with my colleagues, especially Rep. Theis, we intro-

duced House Bill 5013 which, if signed into law, will offer drivers more coverage options, fight fraud and rein in medical costs.

I will not quit fighting to make changes to our auto insur-ance system – our current system works against Michigan drivers. We are the only state requiring motorists to buy un-limited lifetime health benefits through their auto insurance – even if they don’t want it, and even if they already have health insurance. The new proposal under consideration continues and guarantees benefits for Michiganders already receiving lifetime health care after a catastrophic traffic accident. The plan also gives motorists the option to continue to buy unlim-ited personal injury protection coverage, or buy more affordable alternative coverage plans. I look forward to helping move this plan through the Legislature so that we can all start to see some relief in our auto insurance bills.

EDWARD JONES: FINANCIAL FOCUSFive Tips for Women Business Owners

Women are an integral part of the workforce, but they have had to over-come many obstacles along the way. Of course, challenges still remain, but women’s success in the working world is worth commemorating – which hap-pened on American Business Women’s Day, Sept. 22. Are you a woman con-sidering “setting up shop” on your own? If so, here are five tips to consider:

• Balance your goals. It’s possible – perhaps even likely – that your business goals will conflict with your personal financial goals. After all, if you’re pur-chasing new equipment or services for your business, you’ve got less money – at least for the time being – to put away for your own retirement or your children’s education. Hopefully, your investment in your business will pay off in greater in-come, but, in any case, you will need to balance your personal and professional goals.

• Create a retirement plan. As mentioned above, your ability to contrib-ute to a retirement plan may be affected by the amount you put into your busi-ness – but that certainly doesn’t mean you shouldn’t have a retirement plan. In fact, for your future financial security, it’s essential that you launch such a plan. Fortunately, small-business owners

have a choice of plans, including an “owner-only” 401(k), SEP-IRA and SIMPLE IRA. Although the various plans have different requirements and contribution limits, they all offer tax-deferred earnings, which means your money has the opportunity to grow faster than if it were placed in a vehicle on which you paid taxes every year. (Taxes are due upon withdrawal, and withdrawals prior to age 59-1/2 may be subject to a 10% IRS penalty.) Plus, your contributions to a retirement plan may be tax deductible.

• Arrange for “backup.” Virtually all working women are familiar with the conflict between their careers and their roles as caregivers. Women are still more likely than men to drop out of the workforce for an extended period of time to care for young children or elderly parents. And your caregiving responsi-bilities won’t end just because you are now a business owner. Consequently, you need to have someone you trust available to step in for you when your family obligations call you away from work.

• Design a succession plan. When you want to retire, would you like to keep the business in your family? If so, you’ll need to create a succession plan that

works for you and whomever you’d like to take control. Such a plan can be com-plex, so you will need to work with your legal and tax advisors – and you’ll want to give yourself plenty of time to work out the details.

• Build an emergency fund. Main-taining an adequate cash flow will always be a key task – one that involves your sales, billing cycles, inventory and other elements of your business. One way you can help yourself avoid troubles is to maintain an emergency fund consisting of a few months’ worth of your business expenses. You’ll want to keep this fund in a liquid, low-risk account.

Running your own business can be extremely rewarding, but it’s never going to be an easy road. However, with perse-verance and careful planning, you can smooth out some of the bumps along the way – and give yourself reason to cele-brate American Business Women’s Day.

The United Way of Monroe/Lenawee Counties and four major partners, Pro-Medica Monroe Regional Hospital, Re-tired and Senior Volunteer Program, Family Medical Center, and the Monroe County Health Department annually provide four opportunities for low-cost health testing and health information in the fall and spring. The costs for this project are held to a minimum due to the partnership collaborations.

Initial funding for the project comes from The United Way of Monroe/Lenawee Counties, while the partners do all the testing, lab work, and supply staffing and volun-teers.

“Health Check” will offer low-cost health testing at two locations throughout Monroe County dur-ing the months of October and Novem-ber.

The United Way of Monroe/Lenawee Counties is pleased t o o f f e r F R E E MEDICATION DISPOSAL at our Fall Health Check events. This is a safe way for you to dispose of any expired or un-used prescription or over-the-counter medication. Drop off is anonymous, and any patient- identifying information will be destroyed.

This service is made possible through a partnership with the Monroe County Substance Abuse Coalition, the Monroe County Health Department, ProMedica Monroe, Michigan State Police and the Dundee Village Police.

The sites, dates and locations for fall of 2017 are:

• October 19 in Monroe at the Redeemer Baptist Church on South Telegraph in Monroe;

• November 2 at Carleton United Methodist Church on Grafton Rd. in Carleton

Both sites are open from 8 a.m. to 12 p.m. and a 12-hour fast is recom-mended before blood tests.

The main test offered is a Blood Panel comprised of 22 tests to include a com-plete blood count, glucose, kidney func-tion, sodium, potassium, chloride, carbon dioxide, thyroid function, and total cho-

lesterol check. There is a Vitamin D test which measures how much vitamin D is in your body. Vitamin D is essential for healthy bones, and a lack of it can lead to health problems, including cardiovascu-lar disease. A HA1C (Also called Glyco-hemoglobin) a blood test that is an aid in diagnosing and monitoring diabetes. It is an index of the person’s blood sugar from the previous few months. Colorectal Cancer take home kits that may detect early warning signs for ulcers, cancer, or colitis are sold. All tests range in price from $5 to $25.

Blood pressures are always taken before blood draws can be made. Health Check usually offers a memory test and legal information from Monroe Coun-ty Legal Services. ProMedica Monroe Regional Hospital sends staff from their many departments: Nutrition Counsel-ing, Pharmacy, Pul-monary Functions,

Pulmonary Rehab, Cardiaic Rehab, Women's Center Health, Family Center and the Mental Health Center. Also in-volved is the Monroe County Library System and the Monroe Cancer Connec-tion. A private sector company comes in to do hearing tests.

Before leaving the site each individu-al has a private consulution with a regis-tered nurse to review test results and answer questions. The nurses are em-ployees of the Monroe County Health Department. Test results are mailed to the individuals home address and it is their responsibly to take the results to their medical professional.

Each year United Way of Monroe/Lenawee Counties’s Health Check con-tinues to grow. It has been a great com-munity impact project.

Tentative dates have been set for the spring of 2018: May 3, 2018 in the Bedford area at Mt. Carmel Church, Temperance and May 10, 2018 in the Dundee area at the Dundee Assembly of God Church.

The United Way of Monroe/Lenawee Counties and Partners are Making Community Impact with Donors

Several months ago, I was asked to get in-volved in the creation of a cybersecurity center in Bedford Township. It is a task that I took with enthusiasm as I could not help but think of the

opportunities it will bring to the area. I am happy to report that what started as a mere idea has been moving closer to reality.

The goal of the Bedford Advanced Cyber and Defense Center is twofold. First, the center will serve as a location to educate students and provide them with certain cyber accreditation to take with them as they search for employment. Second, it will serve as a hub for busi-nesses to send their employees to train in the latest cybersecurity defense practices.

Cybersecurity is a new frontier and with any new frontier, it is best to be proactive instead of reactive. I am truly excited for the opportunities it will create in Bedford and across Monroe County. There is no doubt that Bedford Township is setting the bar in an untapped field.
