Grafton – Anzio’s Brick Oven Pizza isn’t like anything else around. Th at’s because owner Todd Harrington makes everything from scratch, then uses a brick oven to cook his masterpieces to crispy-crusted perfection. Pizza is often just a quick and easy dinner option, but this pizza is healthy and gourmet. Harrington is a Grafton resident who opened Anzio’s in August to serve his community the neo-Neapolitan pizza he grew up eating. Anzio’s makes their dough fresh daily, the sauce is homemade, and they use only fresh ingredients and vegetables. Th ey even import their anchovies from Italy. I stopped in for dinner on a weeknight after getting off the com-muter train less than half a mile from the restaurant. I met a friend and we decided to split an order of Anzio’s artisan fl atbread: fresh herbs, mozzarella cheese, arugula, prosciutto with a balsamic glaze ($6 or two for $11). Harrington said, “People who order the fl atbread once order it every time they come in after that.” After a couple of bites, we knew we would too – it was delicious but not too heavy. One order was enough for two people to share as an appetizer. Th e pizzas come in two sizes: 12 inch ($9.95) and 18 inch ($12.95). Th ere are more than one dozen possible veggie toppings and almost as many cheese and meat choices. Specialty pizzas in-clude the bianco special clam, with clams evoo, garlic, oregano and mozzarella with a garlic crème sauce ($11.95/ $18.45). Paninis are on the menu too. Harrington said they are popular at lunchtime. Grilled to order, the options include breaded eggplant and basil; tomato, mozzarella, basil and balsamic glaze; meatball and provolone; and the new Italian, which is prosciutto, pepperoni, salami, cappicola and provolone with evoo ($7.25 to $7.95). Anzio’s off ers pizza by the slice between 11:30 a.m. and 2:30 p.m., and off ers lunch combos as well as corporate catering. Th ere is also a wine menu and fi ve beers on tap, carefully selected to be sure there is something for everyone. I ordered a small pizza that combined two diff erent specialty pizzas. One half was the Spinaci Pollo: chicken with garlic crème sauce, spinach, ricotta and mozzarella. Th e other half was the Roast-ed Veggie: oven-roasted red peppers, caramelized onions, broccoli and roasted garlic. My friend ordered a small pizza with sausage topping.
It was clear that a lot of care went into making our pizzas. Th e crust was what really set them apart from other pizza in the area -- it was crunchy with the perfect edge of char from the brick oven. It held up the weight of all of those fl avorful toppings. We fi nished the meal by splitting a chocolate chip cannoli. Th e following night, my friend went back to Anzio’s to introduce other friends to the fl atbread and pizza—that’s how good it is. Anzio’s is located at 135 Westboro Road (Route 30 East) in North Grafton. Hours are Tuesday through Th ursday, 11:30 a.m. to 9 p.m., Friday and Saturday,11:30 a.m. to 9:30 p.m. and Sun-day, 12 to 8 p.m. Closed Mondays.
