Home-made pies, such as the Lord’s pie with lashings of steak, Guinness and John Smith’s beer are firm favourites, introduced to the menu by owner Paul Vollans and talented chef Dan French. The creative duo aim to change the menu every three months, maintain- ing popular home comforts, while offering new seasonal dishes and keep- ing choices fresh and exciting. These include such delights as Nelson’s mixed grill, rump steak, gam- mon, pork loin, sausage and liver, all grilled to the diner’s liking plus real chips, onion rings, peas and fried egg, as well as heart-warming dishes such as tender beef cobbler. And for the more adventurous, chicken fajitas served with soft tortillas, salad and dips. The Lord Nelson is also well known for its delicious home-made desserts including Bakewell tart and irresistible bread and butter pudding. With a combination of traditional English and cosmopolitan food, the latest menu is guaranteed to appeal to all palates. “It’s always been my aim since tak- ing over The Lord Nelson to bring back the individuality that you got when pubs were independent, and that is carried through to the food we serve,” says Paul. “All of our meat and vegetables are sourced locally with the meat coming from John Wilson Butcher’s at Gilroyd and the vegetables from Hoylandswaine farm shop. “Everything is prepared fresh on the premises, we don’t serve any meals that have been frozen. “Although we are known for our food, we are still a local pub and we try to cater for everyone.” Food is served Monday to Saturday from noon to 9pm and Sunday noon to 8pm. The Lord Nelson offers great dis- counts through the week as well as themed nights and an excellent three- course Sunday lunch, which is extremely popular at just £12.95. An early bird menu is served all-day Monday to Friday between noon and 6pm; one course £4.95, two courses £6.95 or three courses £8.95. On Mondays diners get 20 per cent off food, while Tuesday diners can enjoy a dessert for just £1 when order- ing a main meal.
