“Pearls with Purpose” is an elegant theme for this evening’s festivities celebrating our 30th year of Dine and Bid at the University of Jamestown. UJ scholarships support our great students as they bring fresh vitality and energy to our community. At the very center of this traditional evening is the recognition that we are stronger together than apart, and that the University is important to our prosperity and to our cultural identity as a community.

Farmers and settlers in early Jamestown knew the value of providing for a college that would develop educated citizens. Over one hundred and thirty years later, we celebrate together the rich resource that we know as the University of Jamestown. We continue to add new academic programs and to extend our athletic, cultural and recreational opportunities for students and the community.

Donna and I are proud to welcome you to tonight’s dinner and auction to benefit student scholarships. This is such an important time in our history together. Our Doctor of Physical Therapy program in Fargo will graduate its first class of 35 students this May, and we have just begun offerings of an M.A. in Leadership program in both Fargo and Jamestown. A major new initiative for undergraduates will be a new Mechanical Engineering program opening in the Fall of ’16, alongside a Master’s in Counseling to meet a statewide shortage of professionals.

Your support tonight is vital to our students and to our future, so please bid with fervor in support of North Dakota’s #1 ranked university! We would not have reached such recognition without the full support of our Jamestown community!

We thank each of you for your continuing support and we hope that you will share in our joy this evening. We add our special thanks to all those staff and volunteers who work so tirelessly to make tonight’s food and festivities a reality. Let the celebration begin!

Sincerely,

Bob and Donna Badal(Our University of Jamestown President and First Lady are the hosts of this evening’s festivities)

Student 50/50 Auction and Event at 7:30 p.m.

What does it mean to be a Jimmie? You bid, they perform. Here is your chance to win big money and share big money with the Scholarship Fund! You have the opportunity to bid on your favorite group for the Student 50/50 Auction and Event. Student teams will compete to be named the most entertaining. The proceeds from all five winning bids will be combined and split 50/50 between University of Jamestown and the bidders who selected the winning student group. Keep your fingers crossed!

This is how it will work:

1. After an initial introduction of each team, the five student groups will be auctioned off. The five highest bidders will each select the University of Jamestown student group they think will be the winners of the Student 50/50 Auction and Event.

Get together and bid with your friends or table companions!

2. Representatives from the five student groups will then face off as they share their answers to “What does it mean to be a Jimmie?” Each team will provide 3 minutes of entertainment for the crowd varying from song to dance to skits.

3. Following all of the group performances each crowd member will vote via the ticket at the back of their Dine and Bid catalog. Just select the team you think performed the best and hand your slips to the collection agents.

4. The group receiving the highest number of votes has won the 50/50 Auction for the person/table that bid on them. The bidder will go home with half of the pot! And the winning student group will receive $500 for their student organization fund.

JOHN M. STEINER | THE SUN

Jamestown swimmers Camille Kawasaki, Kailey Alber and Erin Hillerud lead the Blue Jays into Friday's state swimming and diving meet in Grand Forks.

STATEBy Chris Aarhus

The Jamestown SunWhen Erin Hillerud took over as Jamestown High School’s top diver, it affected her mentally.“I was still extremely scared of a lot of my dives,” she said. “The biggest thing that helped me was get-ting my forward two-and-a-half. That helped me over-come a lot of fears I had on certain dives.”Hillerud fi gured it all out as a junior, becoming the West Region’s top performer and taking second at the state meet.

This season, she joins fellow seniors Kailey Alber and Camille Kawasaki in leading the Blue Jays into today’s state swimming and diving meet in Bismarck.Hillerud fi nished third at the West Region meet last week, as an infusion of new blood among conference divers added parity. This weekend, she’s hoping for a top-fi ve fi nish.

Blue Jays knock o Mandan

By Chris AarhusThe Jamestown Sun

Jamestown looked the part of a young team facing a se-nior-laden squad in the open-ing game of its West Region tournament match against Mandan on Thursday after-noon.But after Mandan took a 1-0 lead, the young Blue Jays came together.Junior Mackenzie Clark piled up 15 kills as fi fth-seeded Jamestown knocked off fourth-seeded Mandan 17-25, 25-20, 27-25 and 25-19 to advance to the semifi nals for the fourth straight year.“We’ve gotten there differ-ent ways,” Jamestown coach Sara Hegerle said. “This year, we came in as a lower seed and still getting to that (semi-fi nal) speaks a lot about how this team has gotten better. We’re in a good spot right now.”

The Jays (20-17) meet top-seeded host Bismarck Cen-tury (36-2) at 5 p.m., today.Mandan started the match

By Chris AarhusThe Jamestown SunJakob Browning fi gured he wouldn’t be ranked to start this sea-

son, despite performing well as a junior.

A issue with skin checks kept him out of the postseason, and the Jamestown High School wrestler wasn’t able to prove himself at state, meaning there was no basis to rank him. The 145-pounder provided a good guideline on Tuesday night.Browning knocked off fi fth-ranked

Bo Bondeson of Bismarck Century by 8-4 decision in the Blue Jays’ sea-son-opening action at Jerry Meyer Arena. Century, ranked third in the state with nine ranked individuals in the lineup, took the West Region dual 62-15.

But it was Jamestown that jumped out fi rst, getting all three of its wins right off the bat, starting with

Browning, who felt he had some-thing to prove.“I think maybe I’m a darkhorse

now,” Browning said. “I showed what I’m able to do and what I’m capable of.”

Jamestown coach Larry Eslick said Browning drew strength from the fact that he won their matchup last season.

“He beat him last year, so Jakob was confi dent he could take him,” Eslick said. “He knew he could prove himself. Jakob’s on a mission. (State) got taken away last year, and now he wants to show that he’s for real.”Browning jumped on Bondeson im-

mediately, going ahead 2-0. The latter mustered an escape in the fi rst and another in the second when Brown-ing started on top.Tied 2-2 going into the third, Browning scored a takedown just 15

seconds in, and despite Bondeson managing to escape him, a mental edge had clearly been gained. Brown-ing scored two more takedowns, tak-ing advantage of a strong defensive position.

“I’ve always done well when I’m tired,” Browning said. “We both got tired, and I was able to keep my tech-nique well.”

It was a long day for Teddy Bridgewater and the Vikings on Sunday, but

they're moving on to the Atlanta Falcons.

MINNEAPOLIS (TSX) — Coach Mike Zimmer's mes-sage to his players after the Minnesota Vikings bungled the franchise's biggest game in years was part nurturing and part kick in the pants."I told them it's OK to be upset," Zimmer said less than 24 hours after his team lost to the Green Bay Packers 30-13 at TCF Bank Stadium."But I want them to watch some tape (Tuesday) on At-lanta and when they come in on Wednesday, they better be smiling because it's time to get going. The biggest mistake that we could make is if we let that loss become more than one. You get beat once, shame on us. But two of them and then it's shame

on me."Well, you get the idea. Zim-mer was trying to pick up the pieces from an unchar-acteristically sloppy game while trying to remind the Vikings that they're still 7-3, still tied with the Packers atop the NFC North and still looking at what could be six huge games down the stretch, culminating with a rematch with the Packers in Lambeau Field on Jan. 3."We made too many mis-takes to win the football game," said Zimmer, whose team had eight penalties for a season-high 110 yards, lost a fumble, missed an extra point and gave up a 70-yard
