It’s a fun, easy program where students, families and members of the community work together for a common goal.

Today, over 60,000 schools and organizations are registered with Labels for Education, benefiting more than 42 million students. Over the years, the program has provided more than $114 million in merchandise to America’s schools!

Here is how you do it:Step 1: ClipClip and save UPCs and beverage caps from participating products. Check out the complete list here.

The work on the capital project is proceeding very well. The foundation has been poured for the new dining hall (cafeteria) and soon, the steel will be erected providing

us with a frame for the dining hall. That construction is scheduled to be completed by September, which means that we will begin the new school year in our new addition. Once that happens, it will allow for demolition of the old cafeteria and some adjacent areas so that new science, art, and technology classrooms can be constructed in that area. Those of you familiar with the construction industry will know that once construction begins, one thing is dependent upon another. It’s like a domino effect. The new transportation facility is scheduled to be completed by December and the transportation department will most likely move into their new home over the December holiday break. We want to assure you that disruption to our athletic program is being kept to a minimum during construction, and we have been strategically planning for the spring sports season and beyond. If you should have any questions related to athletics during the project, please contact our athletic director, Roxanne Wagner. We will be posting large signs that will point the way to our tennis courts as well as ball fields for everyone’s convenience.

Much work has been done in preparation of the 2012-13 school budget. The administrators have presented budget recommendations to the Board of Education for their consideration in adopting a budget. Please keep in mind that the Board makes all final decisions regarding the budget and nothing is final until the Board declares it so. My reason for saying this is that there are so many variables yet to be determined that will impact our final state aid numbers. Now that the state has adopted its budget, we will have a better idea of our aid picture which will assist us in the development of the budget. There are also matters internal to the district, such as retirements and contract negotiations, which can impact our budget. We go through this every year in hopes that we can discover additional sources of aid that will help to minimize blows to the budget prior to the Board formally adopting it. It is our duty to carefully explore every variable so that when the Board does adopt the budget we can be certain that it is one that is educationally and fiscally sound.

As always, if you have questions or concerns, please fee free to contact the district office at 638-6316, ext. 2003.

HOLLEY DIMENSION April 2012

The Common Core State Standards Initiative is a state-led effort coordinated

by the National Governors Association Center for Best Practices (NGA Center) and the Council of Chief State School Officers (CCSSO). The standards were developed in collaboration with teachers, school administrators, and experts to provide a clear and consistent framework to prepare our children for college and the workforce.

The standards are informed by the highest, most effective models from states across the country and countries around the world, and provide teachers and parents with a common understanding of what students are expected to learn. Consistent standards will provide appropriate benchmarks for all students, regardless of where they live.

These standards define the knowledge and skills students should have within their K-12 education careers so that they will graduate high school able to succeed in entry-level, credit-bearing academic college courses and in workforce training programs. The standards: • Are aligned with college and work

expectations;• Are clear, understandable and consistent;• Include rigorous content and application

of knowledge through high-order skills;• Build upon strengths and lessons of

current state standards; • Are informed by other top performing

countries, so that all students are prepared to succeed in our global economy and society; and

• Are evidence-based. The New York State P-12 Common Core Learning Standards (CCLS) were adopted by the New York State Board of Regents in January 2011 for ELA and literacy and for mathematics. Full implementation of the CCLS will begin with the 2012-13 school year.

Over the course of the 2011-12 school year, Holley Elementary teachers have worked with Monroe 2 – Orleans BOCES literacy coach, Janet Hess, and math coach, Victoria Peacock, to “unpack” the CCLS and make instructional connections with the major shifts in the CCLS.

Faculty and staff were placed into grade level teams (PK-Gr. 1, Gr. 2-3, and Gr. 4-6) where they received professional development encompassing the instructional “shifts” under the new CCLS in ELA/literacy and mathematics. Follow-up sessions with the BOCES coaches provided teachers with more time to delve into the CCLS and begin to write lessons to “test drive” in the classroom before full implementation next school year.

Teachers at the Middle School/High School recently spent time working with the CCLS at the Staff Development Day on March 16. The English Department has spent several years with Cheryl Dobbertin, an ELA consultant, thus were able to make a more seamless shift to the CCLS. This department continues to refine their curriculum using a “Staircase of Complexity” model.

The Middle School/High School math department has also worked with Victoria Peacock on math curriculum and learning standards. Teachers of all other disciplines (science, social studies, language, etc.) are learning how the CCLS will directly impact their areas, and how they can best ensure students can tackle “21st Century Skills” and are “College and Career Ready.”

More work with the CCLS is definitely ahead for Pre-K-12 teachers. It is the goal of Holley CSD to provide teachers with ample training and support to best address these instructional changes.

What are the Common Core State Standards? How is the Holley CSD preparing staff for implementation of the Common Core State Standards?

Elementary School UPDATEby Regina Yeo, Principal

Greetings from the Elementary School! The weather has turned to spring and children

are outdoors enjoying being with their friends. Unfortunately, this is also a time when some students take the opportunity of being outside with their peers to bully others.

When you walk through the halls at the Elementary School you will see the banners our Safe School Ambassadors made to increase bullying awareness and encourage others to pledge to stop it. Bullying is defined as “one-sided, on purpose and repeated. Bullying is when someone hurts, leaves out, frightens, threatens, or spreads rumors about someone.” It is important to note that bullying involves repeated actions. Often when someone is being mean it is called bullying, but in actuality it is just plain being mean. People are sometimes mean or cruel to others, and it’s important that we stop this behavior before it becomes bullying. We are trying to help children know that being mean, cruel or bullying is not acceptable and we are looking to everyone to make it stop.

The Bully Blocker Pledge that students are taking states:•Iagreetonotbullyotherstudents.•Iwillhelpstudentswhoarebulliedbyspeakingout.

•Iwillincludestudentswhoareleftout.

Children see much more interaction among their peers during the course of their day than adults do. When a child tells an adult about a bullying situation it is called reporting. When a child tells an adult about a situation in order to get someone else in trouble it is called tattling. Instead of jumping to conclusions or making assumptions, take time to get the whole story. Ask questions of your child in a calm, reassuring way and listen to the answers. Ask questions of other people who might be involved, making it clear that your goal is to understand and figure out how to address the problem.

It is up to everyone working together to see real change. Let’s work as a team to help build a generation of Bully Blockers.

Middle School/High School UPDATEby Susan Cory, Principal

It is so nice to be enjoying the great weather that we are having

so early this year, but it sometimes makes it more difficult for students to concentrate on what is happening inside the classroom.

Just a reminder that attendance is taken every period and that teachers are expected to provide sound instruction until the last day of the school year. With seventh and eighth grade assessments at the end of this month, and June Regents exams just around the corner, we value all instructional time. The school does not support “skip days” by any class or group. We certainly appreciate your support in continuing to make sure your child has regular attendance.

Also with the warm weather comes the question of “What should I wear to school today?” The dress code policy states that… A student’s dress, grooming and appearance shall: • Be safe, appropriate and not disrupt

or interfere with the educational process.

• Recognize that extremely brief garments are not appropriate.

• Include appropriate footwear at all times; soft soled slippers are not appropriate.

• Not include items that are vulgar, obscene, and libelous or denigrate others because of race, color, religion, creed, national origin, gender, sexual orientation or disability (including sexual innuendos).

• Not promote and/or endorse products or services not permitted to minors including: the use of alcohol, tobacco or illegal drugs and/or encourage other illegal or violent or gang related activities (including pictures of weapons).

• Not include hats or hoods.• Not include bandanas worn in any

fashion.• Not contain any adornment such

as chain or spikes that could be perceived of or used as a weapon.

• Not include jewelry in physical education classes, in athletic programs, or in technology or science labs for safety reasons.

• Outdoor jackets should not be worn indoors. Blankets are also not to be carried and worn as a covering.

• Backpacks and purses must be of a reasonable size and fit within the “test” box.

Please remember that the MS/HS building is air conditioned.

Assessmentreminders:

The seventh and eighth grade ELA assessment is April 17, 18 and 19. The seventh and eighth grade math assessment is April 25, 26, and 27.We will begin testing at around 8 a.m. each day. Breakfast will be provided for all seventh and eighth grade students on assessment days. Regular classes will resume after the testing is done each day.

Eighth graders also have the performance portion of the NYS science assessment to take throughout the school day on May 23 and the written portion on June 4.

All seventh and eighth grade students need to take all assessments. Please try to avoid these dates when scheduling appointments. Encouraging an early bedtime on these days will also help your child to be the most successful he or she can be on these assessments.

Look for the June Regents exam schedule on the district website soon. We have no flexibility in scheduling Regents exams, so please check carefully before starting an early summer vacation or scheduling an appointment. Students who miss the exam in June will not be able to retake it until August (and not all exams will be given in August). If you have questions about the exams your child needs to take, feel free to contact his or her counselor.

This year is flying by. As always the school and parents working together improves the chance of success for all of our students. If there is ever anything you need, please do not hesitate to contact anyone at the school.

Happy spring!

February and March are important months for student musicians and their teachers. That is when the All

County Music Festivals are held during which select students from all five districts in Orleans County can learn from a guest conductor and perform together in a combined concert. The first All County Festival was held February 3 and 4 at Lyndonville School District with students from elementary band, middle school chorus, and high school band. The second festival took place March 2 and 3 at Medina High School with students from elementary chorus, middle school band, and high school chorus.

In order to participate, students are selected by their music teachers based on musical achievement, effort, and attitude. They work on general music selections then rehearse with a guest conductor for about seven hours to perfect their performance. The guest conductors have a musical background and come from either a school district or college music program. The event is organized by the Orleans County Music Educators Association, a volunteer organization consisting of all music teachers in each of the Orleans County school districts.

Holley Central School District 2012-2013 School Calendar

The Holley Board of Education approved the 2012-2013 school calendar at its March 19 meeting. Parents are encouraged to review the calendar before scheduling family vacations

and appointments. The district recognizes the importance of vacations to families and thus provides several recesses throughout the school year. When students are absent from school due to extended family vacations, important instructional time is lost and may be difficult to make up. Therefore, the district discourages vacations that would cause children to be absent from school. Take time to plan vacations with your child’s academic development in mind.
