Page 2: Dikeman Simmental and Huninghake Angus 2016 Premium Genetic Bull Sale

Welcome to the Dikemans’ and Randy Huninghake’s 1st annual Simmental, SimAngus, and Angus Bull Sale! This is the first year of holding our own sale at Kansas Bull Development on the Onaga Road Northeast of Wamego, KS, March 11 at 3:30 p.m. This is the first year for Dikemans’ new brand that is on the left hip. We use the philosophy that “The ‘quality’ goes in before the brand goes on”. This means that we cull some bulls before and after weaning, some on pedigree, some on performance at Kansas Bull Development, and some on disposition. The auction format will be casual, relaxed, and personal with Andrew Sylvester as the auctioneer. We will be using DV Online Auction, so the bulls will not be run through the ring, but will be shown on large TV screens. But, the bulls will be on display close by. We think there are a few bulls of high quality for use in registered seedstock operations. A video of the bulls will be linked to our Web site at “dikemansimmentals.org” or huning-hakeangusranch.com. The Simmental bulls are located in the most Northeast pen at KBD and are available for viewing at any time. There are bulls from another breeder in that same pen, but ours have a green ear tag and our freeze brand. Huninghake Angus bulls can be viewed before the sale at their farm.

Our bulls will have been tested for PI-BVD, Leukosis, Brucellosis, and genetic defects. All bulls being sold passed a breeding soundness exam, and were vaccinated for Lepto-Vibrio. All SimAngus bulls are non-carriers of genetic defects as well as Randy’s fall and yearling Angus bulls. Ultrasound data for carcass traits are includ-ed in the catalog as well. All bulls are either sired by Artificial Insemination or Embryo Transfer.

We developed the catalog with the bulls listed in sale order to allow you to more easily keep track of the bulls and their corresponding data during the sale. In appreciation for recommending our sale to friends and neigh-bors, we are offering a $50 cash discount to customers whose referral purchase a bull. We are committed to Performance, Excellence, and Integrity.

Thank you for your interest in Dikeman Simmentals and Randy Huninghake’s Angus bulls. We look forward to seeing you on Friday, March 11. Lunch will be served at 2:00.

Sale Terms and ConditionsAll animals sell under the terms and conditions set forth by their representative breed association.

Health/ManagementAll bulls have received IBR, BVD, P13, BRSV, 7-way blackleg; and at least two rounds of Ivermectin or Decto-max (for internal and external parasites). In addition, the bulls were vaccinated with Spirovac VL5 (new Lepto-Hard-jo + four other strains). All bulls were tested for brucellosis, and Leukosis.

Bulls/Fertility GuaranteeAll bulls were fertility tested by Dr. Lee Penner, DVM, and Dr. Robert Griffin, DVM, and sell as guaranteed breeders for the first breeding season, through 8-15-16. This guaran-tee does not include loss due to abuse, neglect, illness and/or acts of God (lightning, flood, etc.). We recommend re-testing of bulls before pasture turn out. In the event a bull is not a breeder, he will be replaced or credit will be given on another bull. Note this does not cover death. We strongly recommend death insurance.

Semen InterestEach owner is retaining1/4 semen interest in all bulls unless oth-erwise announced. For most commercial programs, this will not interfere with the natural service use of the bull. It means that the breeder may want to arrange with the buyer to collect semen on a bull. Or, in the case that the bull proves to be a superior sire, and the buyer and/or breeder market semen on a bull, the breeder would share in 1/4 of the profit and get semen at cost.

The Value of PerformanceSimmental and SimAngus bulls can easily add 30-50 lbs. to weaning weights in British based cowherds, and their progeny will perform well in the feed yard and on the rail if you retain ownership until harvest. In addition, females from Simmental and SimAngus sired calves would make great replacements, especially when the females are Simmen-tal x British crosses. Using current calf prices, a bull that sires an average of 25 calves per year for 4 years and adds 30 lbs. aver-age weaning weight per calf at $200/100 lbs. would be worth at least $6,000 more than the price of a bull that adds no additional weight at weaning. You can do the math if they add more weaning weight than 30 lbs. and sell for a higher price than this example.

For producers who keep replacement females and retain ownership through the feedlot of all steers and heifers not kept for replacements, the American Simmental Association All Purpose Index (API) does a great job of identifying potential value differences among bulls. For example, a bull with an API of 130 would be worth $30 more per calf than a sire with an API of 100. Using these two example API values, if a bull produces 30 calves per year for 4 years, the value difference between these two bulls is $3,600!

For Angus bulls, $Value Indexes are expressed in dollars per head to assist beef producers by adding simplicity to genetic selection deci-sions. The $Value is an estimate of how future progeny of each sire are expected to perform, on average, compard to progeny of other sires in the database if the sires were randomly mated to cows and if calves were exposed to the same environment. Weaned Calf Value $W (an index value epressed in dollars per head) is the expected average difference in future progeny performance for pre-weaning merit. $W includes both revenue and cost adjustments associated with differences in birth weight, weaning direct growth, maternal milk and mature cow size. For example, a bull with a $W value of $70 would be expected to produce calves worth $20 more per calf than a bull with a $W value of $50.

Benefits of CrossbreedingCapitalizing on ’heterosis’ by crossbreeding is a very valuable tool in beef cattle production. Probably the most significant and long term study of heterosis was conducted by the USDA Agricultural Research Service in Nebraska. That study showed that 80 crossbred cows pro-ducing crossbred calves are as economical in life cycle production as 100 straight bred cows raising straight bred calves! This 20% bo-nus in efficiency starts with the increased fertility of crossbred cows, which is followed by increased vigor and hardiness of the newborn calves. Crossbred cows producing crossbred calves wean a higher percentage of calf crop and the calves are heavier. This carries over to increased performance of the calves in the feedlot. Crossbred calves also usually sell for higher prices. In addition to all of these advantages, longevity of crossbred cows is also increased, which means that more heifers can be sold or finished in a feedlot rather than kept for replacements. Using Simmental and SimAngus bulls on Angus, Red Angus or Baldy cows; or Angus bulls on Simmental Angus, Hereford, or Baldy cows to create crossbred feeder calves and replacements is a great way to capitalize on heterosis. Research at the U.S. Meat Animal Research Center shows that Simmental and Angus breeds rank first or second among Continental and British breeds, respectively, in nearly all traits studied.

Angus EPDs - values CED - Calving Ease Direct is expressed as the difference in percentage of unassisted births, with a higher value indicating greater calving ease in first-calf heifers. BW – Actual birth weight taken at calving.WW – Weaning weight adjusted to 205 day equivalent and adjusted for dam’s age.YW – Yearling weight adjusted to 365 day equivalent.SC – Scrotal circumference measured to the nearest 0.5 cm. and adjusted to 365 day equivalent.CEM - Maternal CE - % unassisted births from calving daughters.Milk - Maternal Milk - pounds of weaning weight due to dam’s milk.CW - Carcass Weight - pounds of carcass weight.Marbling - percent of marbling score or %IMFREA – The cross-sectional area of the ribeye muscle at a point between the 12th and 13th rib. Ribeye area is used in the calculation of yield grade.Fat - Back Fat or Rib Fat - inches of carcass back fat thickness.

$ Value Indexes$ Values are multi-trait selection indexes expressed in dollars per head, to assist commercial beef producers. Just as with EPD’s, variation in $ Values between animals indicates aver-age expected differences in relative value of progeny if random mating is assumed and the calves are exposed to the same environment.

$W: Weaned Calf Value expressed in dollars per head, is the expected average difference in future progeny performance for preweaning merit. $W includes both revenue and cost adjust-ments associated with differences in birth weight, weaning direct growth, maternal milk, and mature cow size. A larger number is favorable for selecting more cost effective females in most environments.

$B: Beef Value expressed in dollars per head, is the expected average difference in future progeny performance for post wean-ing and carcass value compared to progeny of other sires. The $B value combines the contributions of $F and $G.

Ultrasound Measurements ExplainedFat Thickness - measured at the 12th-13th rib and reported in inch-es. Most of the fat thickness measurements on these bulls are in a very desirable range; which means they have some fat cover, but are not fat. Ribeye Area - measure at the 12th-13th rib and reported in square inches. REA is an important component of the USDA yield grade determinations of beef carcasses. Larger ribeyes result in more de-sirable yield grade numbers and a higher percent of the carcass as trimmed retail product. Yearling bulls should have at least 1.1 square inchest/100 lb. of live weight, and larger ribeye areas are generally more desirable. However, extremely large ribeyes (> 1.3 square inch-es/100 lb. of live weight) are not necessarily desirable.%Intramuscular Fat - percentage of Intramuscular Fat, (%IMF) measured in a longitudinal scan of the ribeye muscle from the 11th to the 13th rib. It is a measure of marbling, which is the primary factor that determines USDA quality grade of carcasses. %IMF values for yearling Simmental bulls generally fall in the range of 1.75 to 4.0%.Yield Grade - EPDS for Yield Grade are calculated from ultrasound measurements. YG is the USDA grading system for determining % meat yield differences among carcasses. USDA yield grades are numbered 1-5, with 1 representing a very muscular, trim carcass with a high % meat yield; and a 5 representing a very fat, light-muscled carcass with a low % meat yield. Yield grades can be calculated to the nearest 10th, such as 2.5, 3.9, etc. The average range for Simmental sired progeny would be about 2.2-2.8.

Simmental EPDs values above or below breed averageCE - Calving Ease - % unassisted births from two-year old heifers. Example: For a CE EPD of 15, one would expect 10% more unassisted births than for a bull with an EPD of 5.BW - Birth Weight - pounds of birth weightWW - Weaning Weight - pounds of weaning weight due to growth.YW - Yearling Weight - pounds of yearling weight due to growth.MCE - Maternal CE - % unassisted births from calving daughters.MM - Maternal Milk - pounds of weaning weight due to dam’s milk.MW - Maternal WW - pounds of weaning weight due to dam’s milk and growth.CW - Carcass Weight - pounds of carcass weight.YG - Yield Grade - tenths of a yield grade.MB - Marbling - percent of marbling score or %IMFBF - Back Fat or Rib Fat - inches of carcass back fat thickness.REA - Ribeye Area - square inches of ribeyeAPI - All Purpose Index - $ per cow exposed under an all-purpose-sire scenario.TI - Terminal Index - $ per cow exposed under a terminal-sire scenario.

This purebred bull is out of a 17-year old cow who stayed in our herd because she had been a consistent producer. Here is one of the most impressive Angus individuals that will be in the sale. He is a well-balanced calving ease herd sire prospect. He displays a very impressive phenotype with lots of volume and capacity through his midsection. His daughters will make broody cows that will thrive in any environment. A -.2 on his BW EPD and a 12 for his CED make this bull have the credentials to be a front pasture sire to be utilized on heifers with success. We should be keeping this one!

His stunning look will leave a positive impression on you. He scanned very well with a marbling EPD of .91. That put him in the top 10% of the breed and a ribeye EPD of .98 that puts him in the top 3% of the breed. His most valuable attribute may only be realized in a couple of years when his daughters come into production. You will want to keep every daughter out of this genetic gem.

We are extremely excited about the potential in this herd bull’s prospect. He is stout, expressive in his muscle and volume. This black pearl bull carries the thickness down his top and throughout his profile to make a well-balanced individual. Everyone that comes to look at the bulls will find 4102 in the pens. This bull is easy to look at.

The K-175 calves normally calve easy. His EPD would show you could use him as a combina-tion cow/heifer bull. His actual BW shows you may need supervision on heifers. 4110 phe-notype looks really good. He carries extra muscle through his top and walks out really well.

This O’Reilly Factor bull will make a great cow bull. He is a long bodied, a stretchy bull that would re-ally add performance and growth to a set of calves. 4105 has a 15 inch ribeye and a .83 on his mar-bling. Not bad numbers!!! 4105’s Dam has a lot of potential and would make excellent replacements.

The Dam of 4118 comes to us from Chair Rock. 4118 is a large bodied bull that has a lot of capacity with a lot of hind quarter. He has a 16 inch ribeye and a .96 marbling. 4118 will add a lot of performance in a set of calves. 4118’s Dam is an awesome female that has a great udder and milks really well. 4118’s phenotype looks great.

4108 is a bull that should be used on cows. His performance numbers are awesome. He ranks in the top 2% for WW, top 1% for YW, top 5% for CW And top 2% for $B at $170.4108 is a stand out bull that is very easy to look at. When we Crossed Weigh Up with Summitcrest Complete we got a bull that should be easy to sell.

4117 is a younger bull that is really taking off. He walks wide and has a lot of capacity. 4117’s ancestors came from the Van Nice herd and was one of their really good cows. The daughters out of 4117 will be very good with great udders and should have good maternal traits. EPD’s show this bull could be used as a combination bull if you don’t breed too many heifers.

4106 will be a good choice for cattlemen breeding cows. A little strong for heifers. 4016 has a lot of potential with Consensus and Net Worth in his pedigree. 4106’s mother is an awesome Dam that is sure to make some great daughters that are broody soggy females.

He was a standout all summer alongside his dam that was a first calf heifer. We believe that his flawless pedigree and remarkable phenotype makes him a front end herd bull contender. This thick topped individual will transmit extra size and performance into his progeny which in return earns profit for those who sell their calves by the pound. Adjusted WW was 840 pounds with a ratio of 105. He also earned an ADJ YW of 1,328 pounds with a ratio of 110.

5105 is a bull you should use on cows. He has a lot of power through his top and hip and should sire calves with a lot of growth. His weaning and yearling EPD’s are in the top 10% of the breed. When you cross Hoover Excitement with Kesseler’s Frontman you end up with a bull that is easy to look at and wish you had more just like him. He will be a herd improver for some progressive cattlemen.

5103 is a very good Stingray bull that you won’t want to miss if you are breeding heifers. He has a BW EPD of -2.1 and a CED of 15. Wow that’s hard to beat! That put him in the top 2% - 3% of the breed respectively for the calving ease traits. 5103 has really good marbling & ribeye and a $B of 132. The Stingray calves are easy to look at and easy to find in the pen.

You can’t miss his profile! He is a bull that is a combination bull to be used on heifers and cows. Use this bull on heifers with supervision. He is a stand out yearling bull with awesome numbers for growth. His weaning and yearling EPD’s are both in the top 4% of the breed with a Dollar $B of 138. Not bad numbers! Consensus and K175 do a lot of things right. Don’t miss him!

5104 is another long bodied bull that is really taking off. He should work good on heifers. He has great calving ease traits with a BW EPD of -0.7 and a CED of 12. Could be a sleeper, if you are breeding heifers. You will like the way the Stingray calves are made. They have a lot of style. If you are keeping replacements 5104 should leave some good daughters and the steers should sell themselves.

He is another bull that can be used on heifers. With a -.5 BW EPD and a CED of 12 you should not have any trouble calving out a set of heifers. He also has a great $B of 139 as well. This is the only Double Vision bull to sell on the yearlings.

He is a little younger but he is really coming on strong. 5107 is a bull that could be used as a combination bull for someone just wanting to use one bull on all their cows and heifers. The Stingray bulls should make females that calve easy and grow really fast. We like the profile of this Stingray bull.

The Gold Bullion 24 Karat Female Sale ConsignorsThe Gold Bullion 24 Karat Female Sale ConsignorsThe Gold Bullion 24 Karat Female Sale Consignors Brooks Simmentals was started in 1986 when I purchased two black Simmental cows and today that has grown to 70. Cattle and land are owned together with my parents, John and Wilma Brooks. AI has been used from the beginning and ET was started in 1997. Today,

most calves are produced through ET and it has become a major factor in upgrading my program. I have enjoyed showing cattle and have had champions at the Kansas State Fair and

the Kansas Beef Expo, but raising show cattle is not my goal. My objective is to raise cattle that are polled, solid colored, and very functional for use in the commercial market with a

strong emphasis on carcass quality.

Ralph Brooks

We began using Simmental semen in 1971 and our herd has grown from 4 cows to about 55 breeding age females. Our children, Mark and Becca, showed Simmental heifers in state, regional, and national Junior Classics; and both were on the KJSA and National AJSA Boards. Michael served two terms on the ASA Board and led efforts to initiate ASA’s Total Herd Enrollment, the Simmental ID system, and the Performance Advocate program. We primarily work our cattle on foot with the aid of our Border Collie dog, Sugar, so disposition is very important to us. We are both on the faculty at K-State; therefore, our cattle have to be easy to handle with our limited time to manage them. Our primary goal is to produce bulls for commercial cow-calf producers. We emphasize ’convenience traits’, total performance, and maternal traits. Our moderate-sized herd of all AI sired, all polled, all black females are moderate framed and functional in the Flint Hills environment. We balance phenotype, actual performance and EPDs.

Earline, “Sugar” & Michael

Diamond D Simmentals was established in the Flint Hills near Manhattan, Kansas in 1968 By Calvin and Mary Louise Drake. Semen, imported from Canada, was used

on Angus and Polled Hereford cows to enhance the polled gene. Artificial insemination has been used for 33 years. Easy-fleshing, polled, rapid-growing females that calve easily are selected as replacement heifers. EPDs are used in selection and carcass quality is stressed. Only AI sire having sound EPDs and

correct structure are selected. Both red and black cows comprise the herd of about 40 head. This is one of the earliest Simmental herds established in America still in

continuous operation. Calvin is a retired professor of Animal Science at Kansas State University and spent several years in the cattle feeding industry.

Calvin & Mary Louise, “Cochise”, Adryanna & Darren

The Schaake’s have been breeding Simmental cattle since 1974, after an introduction to the breed when Scott showed the Grand Champion steer (Simmental x Hereford) at the county fair. Artificially breeding our black cows to Simmental bulls gave us our start in black-factored Simmental genetics in 1975. In fact, many of our leading cow families trace back to “Chipper N726”, who defined the word “longevity” She remained a productive donor cow to the age of 20 years. Currently our program utilizes artificial insemination and embryo transfer. Selection pressure for calving ease, maternal influence, moderate growth, disposition and a manageable mature size has been stressed for several generations. Attention to structural correctness, fleshing ability and marketing appeal has been a priority since day one.

Shane, Shilo, Scott & Kandi

Huninghake Angus Ranch is located in Northeast Kansas in Marshall County. For our Angus program, we have assembled some of the finest genetics from some of the top breeders to use as the foundation of our operation. These females along with the cows we already had make up the base of our cowherd. Our goal is to breed sound top-quality Angus cattle with balanced genetic traits.

We are striving to provide cattle that will work for our custom-ers by raising them in a similar working environment. Our bulls go to the good commercial cattlemen selecting profitable genetics for their operations.

Randy & Melissa

We began using Simmental semen in 1971 and our herd has grown from 4 cows to about 55 breeding age females. Our children, Mark and Becca, showed Simmental heifers in state, re-gional, and national Jr. Classics; and both were on the KJSA and National AJSA Boards.

We were both on the faculty at K-State for over 40 years; therefore, our cattle have to be easy to handle with our limited time to man-age them. Our primary goal is to produce bulls for commercial cow-calf producers. We emphasize ‘convenience traits’, total performance, and maternal traits. Our moderate-sized her of all AI sired, all polled, all black females are moderate framed and functional in the Flint Hills environment. We balance phenotype, actual performance and EPDs.

The Huninghake Family!

Our cattle will make a positive contribution and will improve every sector of the beef cattle industry. These Angus cattle will meet the current and future needs of the beef industry. They have the quality to be used in purebred and commercial operations. This includes raising elite Angus bulls that grow fast and efficiently, be easy to handle, will calve easy, and will produce excellent steers and replacement heifers. The steers will return good premiums from their carcass merit.

We continually place particular emphasis on dispositions, structural correctness, perfor-mance and udder quality. We put a strong emphasis on genetic selection and perfor-mance data. We strive to produce outstanding cows with extreme longevity.

Please feel free to contact or visit. We would enjoy the opportunity to discuss our herd with you. If you have any questions about our upcoming sale or operations, please drop us an e-mail or give us a call. We strive to provide the best customer service before and after the sale. We appreciate the interest of those who are looking into our bulls.
