This is the first in a series of reports that will investigate the different aspects of the digitalization of the supply chain. As the introduction to the series, this report: 1) Provides an overview of how the apparel supply chain can be transformed digitally and the advantages that digitalization brings to the value chain. 2) Looks at the various stages of the apparel supply chain— design, manufacturing, distribution and sales—and illustrates how digital technology can be applied to each stage. 3) Highlights the importance of a holistic approach to digitalization, which should increase the synergies and interaction between the different stakeholders along the supply chain, so that the efficiencies reached at each stage will be reflected positively on the supply chain as a whole. • Intheproductionstage,manufacturerscanemploymachinerythatusesdigitaltechnologytoincreaseprecisionandefficiency.

• Inthedistributionstage,companiescanuseInternetofThings(IoT)androboticstechnologiestorunsmootherpickingandpackingoperationsandcoordinatedeliveryofitems.

• Inthesalesstage,retailerscanusein-storetechnologysuchassensorsystemstotrackandanalyzeconsumers’behaviorinordertoimprovesalesconversionrates.

Thedigitaltransformationofthesupplychainhelpsimproveefficiencyateachstage,resultinginaleanerprocessoverall.Digitalizationprovidesseveraloperationaladvantages,includingincreasedspeed,flexibilityandtrust,andbetteruseofresources.Theapplicationofdigitaltechnologieshasthepotentialtoreducethetimeittakestomoveanitemthroughthesupplychainby48%,accordingtoindustryexpertsatsourcinggiantLi&Fung,asistercompanyofFungGlobalRetail&Technology.

However,giventheinterconnectednatureofthesupplychain,inordertomaximizethebenefitthatdigitalizationbrings,companiesmustensurethatthevariousphasesofthesupplychainworkinsynergy.

IntroductionInapparel,asinmanyotherindustries,thesupplychainiscurrentlyundergoingadigitaltransformationthankstotheriseofnewtechnologies.Acrosssectors,digitalizationischallengingoldoperatingmodelsandunleashingnewpotential.

Thetraditionalapparelsupplychainconsistsoffourdifferentstagesthatoftenoperateinsilos.Buttomaximizethebenefitsofdigitalization,thedifferentphasesmustbewellconnectedandwellcoordinated,sothatanyincreasedefficiencygainedatonestagecanbereflectedinsmootheroperationsinthefollowingstage.Digitalizationitselfcanimprovecoordinationbyfacilitatingcommunicationbetweendifferentstakeholdersalongthesupplychain.

Thisreportisthefirstinaseriesthatwillinvestigatethedifferentaspectsofthedigitalizationofthesupplychain.Itprovidesanoverviewofhowtheapparelsupplychaincanbetransformeddigitallyandtheadvantagesthatdigitalizationbringstothevaluechain.Thereportanalyzesthevariousstagesoftheapparelsupplychain—design,manufacturing,distributionandsales—andillustrateshowdigitaltechnologycanbeappliedtoeachstage.

AHolisticDigitalSupplyChainAdigitalsupplychainintegratesandconnectsthestakeholdersinvolvedinthedifferentstagesoftheprocessthroughdigitaltechnology.Anumberofdigitaltechnologiescanbeappliedtothevariousstagesoftheapparelsupplychain,assummarizedbelow.

Toreapthemaximumbenefitsofdigitalization,thedigitaltransformationmustinvolvethevaluechainasawhole,notjustsomeofitsparts.Thestagesofthesupplychainarehighlyreliantoneachother,soaproblematonestagewillinevitablyhavenegativeconsequencesontherestofthechain.

Similarly,theincreasedefficiencybroughtbythedigitalizationofonestageofthesupplychainwillnotimprovetheoveralloperationsignificantlyifthereisnotsufficientcoordinationwiththeotherstages.Digitalizationitselfcansupportcoordinationwithinthevaluechainbyfacilitatingcommunicationbetweendifferentstakeholders.Forexample,store

Tomaximizethebenefitsofdigitalization,thedifferentphasesofthesupplychainmustbewellconnectedandwellcoordinated.

Theincreasedefficiencybroughtbythedigitalizationofonestageofthesupplychainwillnotimprovetheoveralloperationsignificantlyifthereisnotsufficientcoordinationwiththeotherstages.

• Forwardfromdesigntosales:Digitalizationcanimprovetheefficiencyofdesign,productionanddistributionandenablestakeholderstorespondappropriately,andmorequickly,whenadjustmentsareneeded.Forexample,theuseofvirtualsamplesallowsdesignersandproducerstointeractmorequicklyandefficientlywhensamplesneedtobeamended.

• Backwardfromsalestodesign:Digitalizationenablesconsumersandretailerstotracebackwhathappensinthesupplychain,andtoseewhereaproductcomesfrom.Itprovidesclarityonwhetheraproductissustainablyorethicallysourced,andhelpsretailersandshoppersavoidcounterfeitproducts.

Thiscancreateavirtuouscirclethatfurtherenhancesthesynergiesamongthedifferentpartsofthevaluechain.

ALeanerandFasterDigitalProcessDigitalizationhelpstocreatealeanerprocessateachstageofthesupplychainandbetweenstages.Adigitalsupplychaincanbringsignificantadvantages,including:

• Speed:Digitalizationcanhelpcutproductdevelopmenttimesignificantly.Forexample,headquartersandsupplierscansenddigitalsamplesbackandforthratherthanshippingphysicalprototypes,therebysavingtime.

• Flexibility:Digitalizationimprovescommunicationamongthestakeholdersinthedifferentstagesofthesupplychainandspeedsupprocesses,givingstakeholdersmoreflexibilitytoadjustquicklytochangingconsumerdemands.

• Riskminimization:Manufacturerscanusedigitaltechnologiestorespondtopossiblemanufacturingissuesmuchmorerapidlyandefficiently.Sinceanyneededchangescanbedonevirtually,nophysicaladjustmentoftheblueprintisneeded.

• Trust:Automatinginteractionswithsuppliersbuildstrust.Forexample,digitalizingpaymentsmakesiteasierforstakeholderstopayontime,andstoringinvoicepaymentsdigitallyinthecloudmakesiteasiertotracetransactions.

• Improvedefficiency:Digitalizationsmoothstheinteractionsbetweenthedifferentstagesofthesupplychain,makingsupplychainmanagementmoretimeandresourceefficient,whichresultsinreducedoperatingcosts.

• Environmentalsustainability:Digitalsamplingand3Dprintingcannegatetheneedtoshipphysicalitemsupanddownthesupplychain,whichhelpsdesignersandmanufacturersreducetheiruseofresourcessuchasmaterialsandfuel.

HowtoDigitallyTransformtheApparelSupplyChainProductdesignanddevelopmentcanmovefromapaper-basedprocesstoafullydigitalone.Aspectsofproductionandpurchasingcanalsobedigitalized,forexample,withtheuseofIoTtechnology.Inthissection,weexamineinmoredetailhowthestagesoftheapparelsupplychaincanbedigitalized.

ProductDesignandDevelopment:3DSimulationSavesTimeandMoneyIntheproductdesignanddevelopmentstageofthesupplychain,digitalizationallowsdesignerstohavealltheinformationtheyneedinoneplaceandenablesthemtodesignanitemvirtuallyusingsoftware.Allthepatternsavailabletodesignerscanbecollectedandeasilyaccessedinadatabaseoffabrics,whichcanalsohouseinformationsuchastestingresultsofthematerials.

3Dsoftwarecanbeusedindigitaldesigntosimulatehowagarmentwouldbehavewhilewornonthebody,while3Dsimulationreducesthetimeandcostassociatedwithcreatingmultipleiterationsofasamplegarment.3Ddesignandcommunicationtechnologiescanalsoreducetravelexpensesandthenumberofprototypesandsamplesusedintheprocess,whileminimizingfabricwasteandsavingtime.Timeiscrucialforapparelmanufacturersandretailers,giventhegeneralmovetowardfastfashioninretail.

3Dprintingisanothertechnologythatcanbeusedinadigitalsupplychain.Essentially,a3Dprinterisamachinethatcanproducephysicalitemsfromdigitaldesignfiles.3Dprintingcouldpotentiallyeliminateallthestagesinmanufacturing.However,thetechnologyisstilllimitedbytherangeofmaterialsthatcanbeused,so3Dprintingiscurrentlyconfinedtothedesign/samplingstageofthesupplychain.Weanalyze3DprintingtechnologyinmoredetailinourreportEnterDesign,ExitSweater:3DPrintingintheFashionIndustry.

Digitalfinishingappliesdigitaltechnologytodifferentphasesoftheproductionstage,includingprinting,coatinganddyeing.Thisdramaticallyimprovestheefficiencyofresourceusageandtheprecisionandqualityofthemanufacturingprocess.ThetechnologydevelopedbyDigitexenablestheproductionofsmarttextilesandfabricsthatemploynanotechnology,whichcannotbeproducedwithtraditionalmanufacturingmachinery.Digitalfinishingtechnologycanbeintegratedwithsensorsthatmonitortheresourcesusedandthewasteproducedduringmanufacturinganditcanconnectproductionfacilitieswitheachother,enablingamorerapidresponsewhenadjustmentsareneeded.

Distribution:SmootherOperationsThankstoAutomationIoTtechnologycanbeusedindistribution.Forexample,RFIDandNFCtagscanbeusedtotrackinventoryandproductmovementswithinthesupplychain.Byenablingtheaccuratetrackingofgoods,RFIDcansupportthelogisticsofmultichannelmodels:servicessuchasreserve-and-collectandclick-and-collectrelyonhavingaclearviewofinventory,whichRFIDcanprovide.

US-basedpackagedeliverycompanyUnitedParcelService(UPS)providesanexampleofhowlogisticscanbedigitalizedinordertoimproveoperationalefficiency.UPSdriverscarryhandheldcomputersequippedwithbuilt-inglobalpositioningsystem(GPS)chipsthatenablemanagerstogivethedriversreal-timeinstructions.UPSalsodevelopedanappthatenablescustomerstomanagetheirparceldelivery.Forexample,customerscanusetheapptochangeorupdatetheirpreviouspackagedeliveryinstructions.

Myrmex,aCalifornia-basedtechcompanywemetatLondonTechWeek2016,providesafurtherexampleofdigitalizationofthedistributionstage.Thecompany’sCurbsidePickupSystemconsistsofconnectedrobotsandautonomousvehiclesthatminimizeoperationalfrictioninlogistics.Thesystemisconceivedtoimprovethelogisticsofverytime-sensitiveitemssuchasperishablefood,butitcanbeusedbycompaniesinotherindustrieswheretimingisimportant—includingapparel—tomakedeliverymoreefficient.

Thesystemcombinesafullyautomatedloadingsystemandaninnovativeclick-and-collectterminal.Onlineorderloadingisfullyautomatedthroughasystemofroboticgearthathandlesthegoods.Thislowerscostsandminimizeserrors,makingoperationsfasterandmoreefficient.Theroboticgearplacestheordersintherightsequenceinwhichtheyneedtobedelivered.

Digitexenablestheproductionofsmarttextilesandfabricsthatemploynanotechnology.
