EOD Wireless IntercomLow Power, Full Duplex Intercom Tested for EOD Application

DesignThere is no intrusion in the EOD9 suit or helmet by our gear so he can clear the suit as quickly as he would if the radio were not present.

The unique throat mic/circuit provides outstanding speech quality and suppresses the fan/air noise in the helmet. Dual, in-ear earpiece/speakers don’t occlude the ear canals but deliver audio to both ears.

Based on design requests from bomb techs, the BT transmit inhibit is done with a “big button” ... push on/push off ... made from clear Lucite so the internal LEDs light to indicate if the tech is transmitting and dark when there are no RF emissions. Even when the tech is not transmittiing, the unique full duplex design permits the receiver to stay on even when the transmitter has been disabled. Permitting the tech to recieve vital support from command.

Since the radios operate TDMA, the transmit emissions are present only 1/7 of the time that the transmitter is enabled which reduces the potential for the radio’s radiated RF to heat an IED trigger wiring. The radio is worn on the BT’s back, so the emissions at the ordnance that the BT is facing is greatly attenuated. (USAF BT procedures call for the BT to always face the ordnance when entering or leaving the hot zone).

FunctionalityAll radios are capable of being reconfigured in the field as a BT radio, NCOIC radio or worker bee radio withouth additional tools or technical knowledge.

A Wireless amplified speaker permits support personnel to monitor all communications.

The repeater is simple to operate and provides the NCOIC with link to a STE/cell/land-line phone and/or LMR (they use XTS-5000). The unit is built into a Pelican case; 15 pounds including battery pack (Lithium or SLA). With a range exceeding EOD SOP. A directional Yagi antenna with a magnetic-mount can be added for more range as can a 0.5W bi-directional amplifier for the repeater.

The Bomb Tech in an EOD9 suit has a 25mW radio (Tx power) and even this can be shut down (without shutting down his receiver).

Radios operate spread spectrum, direct sequence utilizing time division multiple access technology; each system utilizes only 8MHz of the 2.4-2.483 MHz spectrum. FREQUENCY AUTHORIZATION IN-PLACE…. MCEB J-12 No. 7462/1 WITH HOST NATION OPS APPROVALS.

Based on over 25 years designing In-Suit communications for HERO-Safe and Intrinsically-Safe operations.
