Digital Video

I choose this assignment because the medium video can be used in different design phases. You can use it for transfer a feeling or atmosphere of a certain situation, or it can be used for explaining or showing your concept in the end of the design process, for presentations, and for scenarios. Further I wanted to understand the basic techniques of digital video making and editing.

Deliverables1 – Small individual video exercise. (Screened during meeting)2 – Improvement individual video exercise. 2 – Concept presentation for main video made by teams of two students.3 – Main video, made by teams of two students. (Screened during last meeting)

The individual video had to be in real time (no slow-motion), not handheld, and only one shot (no cutting and pasting allowed). The idea of the first video was to observe and film passersby in a shopping street. Remarks on this video were, that you don’t know what will happen. You hope for something funny to happen during your shoot, but you’re not sure if you get a nice shot. So the next video had to be influenced, manipulated by something, so that you have the situation under control. The idea of the second video was then observing pigeons (previous time I also saw some pigeons walk in the shopping street). By straw bread on the floor, the pigeons would come and eat in front of the camera. In this way the video was influenced. This result was very good and chosen as the best video of all. With the final deliverable, writing scenarios and developing a concept was essential. Our subject was soccer fans watching a game on television in a living room. The concept was to put the reactions of a goal or other reactions behind each other. To disguise that the participants would notice that they were being filmed, we filmed the whole game long, and we talked to them just like it was a normal evening watching a soccer game.

ReflectionI’ve learned that you have to arrange so many things, and have to think about any detail of your concept, before you can press the red button. Question you need to ask are: What is the reason for making this video? How do you design your video so it reaches its goal best? What kind of techniques will you use and why? Where do you place your camera? What about sound? Of course you will forget some details when you doing it for the first time. During the first shoot of the final deliverable, the battery of the camera was empty and we didn’t have any charger. The second time we wanted to shoot; we stood in a traffic jam and missed the game. So we didn’t get as much video material as we wanted to reach our goal. But in the end a still satisfied video was made. Within my first two videos I’ve learned how you can observe, choose, and arrange a video at your best. To reach the goal of influencing the video with observing was difficult, but I accomplished the goal. I observed the situation good, made the right choices (influence the video with strewing bread) and arrange the right setting.
