Objectives

• The students will learn how to apply color and textures to their sketches and drawings using the brush tools.

• They will learn speed paint techniques and digital paint techniques to generate volumes, different kind of materials and present their drawings in a professional way.

• Aprenderá las técnicas de speed paint y pintura digital para generar volúmenes, aplicar materiales y lograr una vista más profesional de sus bocetos.

LineartThe sketch can be done in any technique (traditial as pen,

pencil, or digital), it can be scanned or done in any program (sketchbook pro, painter, corel, sai, etc.)

The sketch can be rough, fury or not finished. Later in photoshop it can be defined and finished.The line trace will be the guide to put on color and is namd lineart.

Lineart (delineado)El boceto puede ser un escaneo o realizado de manera

digital en photoshop o en otros programas (sketchbook pro, painter, corel, sai, etc.)

El boceto puede ser burdo, rayado o poco definido, ya que en photoshop se puede terminar de definir las líneas.Al trazo de líneas que serán las guías para el coloreado se llama lineart.

From rough sketch to a defined line (lineart) that will be used to put color on.

Coloring techniquesHaving the lineart or the sketch

is time to apply the basic colors to each part or the drawing.

The basic color is solid and must be the plain color of the object.

Ya teniendo el lineart, o la idea de lo que se quiere dibujar (bosquejo o imaginación), se procede a aplicar los colores base del dibujo.

El color base es un sólido que de preferencia sea el color del objeto.

Solid colors

Later you put the lights and shadows with different tones, darker for shadows, brighter for lights.

You can use brushes with different kind of opacity and stamp.

Posteriormente se aplican luces y sombras con colores más obscuros o claros utilizando brushes con distintos calibres y opacidades.

Tone Values

For dramatic effects you can use dodge, burn and sponge tools

Para algunos efectos más dramáticos se pueden utilizar las herramientas de dodge, burn y sponge.

• Dodge: Lighter color• Burn: Burn color• Sponge: Saturation

Note: be careful and dont abuse ot this tools. It is better to use different color tones and try this just to accent the shadows or the lights.

Nota: cuidado de no abusar de estas herramientas, es mejor aplicar colores y acentuar con estas herramientas las luces y sombras.

Coloring tricks• If you have the solid color of

the base, go to the Lock area in the Layers window and click on the square filled with white and gray squares. This buttom blocks the color.

• While this buttom is on, you can paint on the solid (you can just modify what is inside this layer).

• This let you paint shadows, lights and details without getting outside the line.

Trucos para colorear• Teniendo el color sólido,

se dirigen a la sección de layers->Lock y dar click al cuadrito con cuadritos grises y blancos para bloquear el color.

• Así nada más colorearán el color sólido que hay en el layer. Sirve para aplicar detalles sin salirse de la raya.

Other trick• If you have a solid color in a layer you can apply any texture on it

using this trick.• Create a new layer and let it on top of the one with the solid color. • Between this layers put the cursor and press ALT+ Left Click (an

arrow will appear, and this tells you that the layer over will just affect the layer under ).

• Teniendo el sólido en el layer al cual se le quiere aplicar la textura se crea uno nuevo. Entre ambos se coloca el cursor y se aprieta ALT + Click Izquierdo (aparece una flecha que indica que el layer de arriba sólo afecta al de abajo ).

(monochromatic) and later put color on it using the layer blenders as: soft light, overlay, hard light, screen, etc.

Exercise 13: Paintover• The students are going to make a paintover on

an image from a 2D cartoon movie trying to give it a different look, more tridimensional look.

• Here you need to identify the light source, the kind of mood and lightning of the scene, the materials, and use different kind of brushes to accomplish the exercise.

• Date: Saturday October 11th, before 11:59pm• File: Letter, 150 dpis (show both images in

the same page)

Exercise 13: Paintover• Los alumnos realizarán un paintover sobre una escena

de una película animada en 2D, tratando de darle una impresión distinta, más tridimensional.

• Aquí necesitan identificar la fuente de luz, el tipo de sensación de la escena e iluminación correspondiente, los materiales y usar diferentes tipos de brushes para lograr el objetivo.

you need to understand how light affects it: kind of surface (smooth or rough), kind of reflection (matte or mirror), etc.

Ice: high reflection (white brights) and transparency with translucent.Hielo: alta reflexión (brillos blancos) y transparencias y traslúcidos.

Crystal: is like ice but it has a higher reflection.Cristal: es semejante al hielo pero su reflexión es mayor.

Stone: No reflection, texture depends on the kind of stone.Piedra: Sin reflejo y la textura depende del tipo de piedra.

Wood: Trace the streaks, use 3 tones to create the textures, lights and shadows.Madera: se trazan las vetas, se utilizan 3 tonos para generar las texturas, los brillos y sombras.

– Care for the tone uniformity in all the scene.– Care about all the shadows: objects, cloth, persons,

animals, everything that are in the scene. Watch out this object’s shadows projection (Interaction .

Details and backgroundsYou can use light effects, brushes to make textures, trace, texts, pictures,

logotypes, backgrounds, filters, etc.Pueden usar efectos de luces, brushes para texturizados, delineados,

textos, fotografías, logotipos, fondos, filtros, etc.

You can use pictures for some details, apply some filters, opacity, brushes on them to create reflections, lights, environments, etc.

Se pueden utilizar algunas imágenes reales (fotografías) para detalles, a los cuales se les aplica filtros y opacidad para crear reflejos, brillos, paisajes, etc.

Use a car wheel, put on a movement filter and some details with brushes.

Speed paint techniques

Fondo del mismo color que el boceto: aplicación de luces, sombras y detalles utilizando blancos, tonos y tintes, contrastes. Usen el color de fondo como color base del objeto.

Same color background: use lights, shadows and details applying white traces, different tones and contrast, use the background color as your base tone.

Speed paint, as it name tells, must be quick, you can see the traces, cross lines, but everything has a reason. You have an intention and giving a sensation (doesn’t need to be very detailed but must be understood)

Speed paint, como lo dice su nombre, debe ser rápido, se pueden notar los trazos, salirse un poco de la línea, pero al mismo tiempo debe tener una intención. Debes dar cierta sensación (no necesita tener muchos detalles pero se debe entender lo que es)

The type of lines and details depend on the time you have and you are using for your painting, but it isn’t proportional directly with quality. The quality increase with practice and the designer vision.

La definición de líneas y detalles dependen del tiempo que se dedique, pero no es directamente proporcional a la calidad. La calidad aumentará dependiendo de la práctica y la visión del ilustrador/diseñador.

Speed paint is impressionist (like Van Gogh and his paintings) (¡mucho gatazo!)

The closest things are darker and defined, the distant things are opaque, lighter and smooth.

Lo más cercano es más obscuro, lo más lejano más opaco, claro y suave.

Matte painting• Is a painted representation of a landscape that helps to

create a background or an environment in a film. This helps to create new worlds or recreate environments that existed long time ago.

• Es una imagen pintada de un escenario que ayuda a crear un fondo o un ambiente para una película. Esto ayuda a crear nuevos mundos o recrear escenarios que existieron hace mucho tiempo.

¿Qué se vale?• Usar imágenes de referencia:

– Basarse en las dimensiones de algo existente y estándar para rediseñar sobre él.

– Usar materiales y elementos de fotografías, distorsionarlos, acomodarlos y meter filtros/blenders/texturas/etc. para generar texturas, ambientes, etc.

– Al usar stock de alguien más se debe dar crédito a esas personas, mencionarlos en los comments.

¿Qué no se vale?• Calcar la imagen tal cual (eso no es ni

ético, ni legal, ni su trabajo ¬¬ rataaaasss)• Plagio de diseños, decir que algo es suyo

y sólo lo hayan retrazado o cambiado un 10%

Exercise14: Texture to create different materials• The students will draw 8 spheres and put on

different materials using different techniques (use brushes and image sources):– Wood– 2 kind of metal (matte and bright, texturized or smooth,

oxidized, etc.) – Bright Plastic– Mate Plastic– Stone– Glass/Ice/Water– What you want: jelly, skin, bubble, hard handy, gummy

bear, etc.

Ejercicio 14: Texturizado para crear materiales• Realizarán 8 esferas a las cuales aplicarán una textura

distinta a cada una utilizando distintas técnicas (usen brushes e imágenes de referencia):– Madera– 2 tipos de Metal (mate y brillante, texturizado o liso,
