the
Story...
hat if we created a pattern that transcended the size of an individual tile? What if scale
could adapt to the needs of space, large or small? What if color & context, more than pattern itself, united to form the essense of its style?
The Pearl Damask Series answered our questions. The 12-piece pattern tells a universal story of the Circle of Life: when masculine and feminine meet in harmony, when Yin finds balance in Yang, new life is created, celebrated, and returns to begin anew.
This is a very meaningful project for Architerra, and for me, as my daughter and the Damask were conceived shortly after returning from Paris in 2006. I worked with Marius Pana, our mold-maker, throughout pregnancy, and final moulds arrived the week Liberty Pearl was born...how could they not share a name?
Since the births, the Pearl Damask Series has triggered refinements in nearly every facet of our business, and we are proud to debut what represents a new pinnacle of Architerra’s capabilities. The Liberty Pearl pattern, the whole story, was the genesis for the numerous repeating patterns presented here, each named after an essential, valued someone in our own Circle of Life stories...from heart to home. Enjoy!
As always, many thanks for playing with our tile.

Our Ecological Mission:
• Increase our impact on the community • Decrease our impact on the environment
Our Process:
Raw Materials• The majority of ingredients in our proprietary clay recipe are harvested regionally and blended locally, minimizing their transportation footprint• All ‘washes’ used to color our tile contain the simplest of ingredients: water, clay and earth oxides • Founded Mined Materials Environmental Stewardship (MiMES) aimed at creating an economic incentive for the environmentally responsible and sustainable mining of minerals used in ceramics manufacturing
Powered (primarily) by People• Loving hands form each tile rather than electrically powered presses• Each tile is hand painted using brushes, not powered sprayers, resulting in minimal waste and pollutants• We personally escort our tile through the entire creation process, without relying on electric conveyor belts• Our firing technique is a single-fire process, dramatically reducing kiln times and energy consumption compared to traditional bisque-fired ceramics• Our kilns are programmed on automated cycles, thus maximizing energy efficiency• The water spent in our tumbling process is reused• We utilize the services of the City of Austin, Ecology Action and others to recycle paper, glass, plastic, metals, outdated technology, ink cartridges...you name it, we try it!
Leaving Home• We reuse inbound shipping materials whenever we can and purchase only 100% biodegradable peanuts• Local artisans have first dibs on our misfit material, while the remainder is routinely donated to Habitat for Humanity and other local causes

About Architerra Tile
Each piece of tile made at Architerra undergoes a number of labor intensive processes. Understanding the following will help to explain to your customers the unique look and qualities of our handmade tiles.
FABRICATIONEach Architerra tile is hand pressed and/or hand cut. Using finely detailed plaster moulds and our own special clay recipe, hand pressing imparts character and texture to each piece individually. No two are alike.
SLIP WASHINGBefore firing our tiles, we hand color them using a thin liquid mixture of earth oxides or mason stains mixed with clay slip and flux. Since our colors are "washed on" in a liquid state, color density will depend on the thickness of the mixture and the depth of the pat-tern on the tile. Colors will appear thinner and therefore lighter, where the mixture runs off and darker and more saturated where it can pool in recesses,
During firing, this mixture changes chemically and bonds to the clay body of the tile. Most of the earth oxides will produce a natural matte finish that resembles stone, while a few will have a semi-glossy sheen.
TUMBLINGAfter firing, we put our tiles through a process similar to the way stones are tumbled. The desired effect is to smooth down and slightly age the tiles. In areas of high relief, the colo-rant is lightened in the tumbling process, to reveal more of the natural buff-colored clay body. The colorant in crevices is retained and remains mostly unaffected during tumbling. Since the tumbling process involves many variants, each piece will wear differently and add a natural richness to the installation.
ARCHITERRA COLOR PALETTEOur palette consists of 86 colors. All colors are indicated by a color name. Each color is available on any piece. Many handpainted multicolor options are also available. See "About Multicolor" for more details.
COLOR RANGEThe following is a description of the acceptable range for each color. Larger orders will en-compass more of the complete range and should be laid out prior to installation to balance the overall appearance. The range is influenced by pooling of the colorant and the volatility of the earth oxide used. The volatility has been rated on a variation scale from 0-5. Varia-tion will be noted in "Color Descriptions" as V=0 through V=5. Colors rated at V=5 have the highest amout of variation. and those at V=0 have little or no variation. Although pooling can be inferred from the design of the tile, the volatility which reacts to differences in tem-perature, may also be affected by the size of the piece, i.e. bigger, thicker pieces may ap-pear different than smaller, thinner pieces of the same color.
Natural Colorway Subtle Colorway

For multicolor murals, specify the background color by choos-ing one of our standard colorways below, or for two-color
combinations, specify background and detail color.
About Multicolor We offer over 20 natural and subtle standard colorways on numerous background colors, as well as two-color and three-color combinations. Our multicolor process is a layered paint technique where the background color is first washed over the entire piece, then the details are handpainted by skilled artisans. The background color will influence the overlayed color, some more than others. Due to the layered techique in which the paint is applied, some colors do not work well with each other.A stan-dard colorway is a pre-determined selection of colors that work well together. A two-color combination is a background color with all of the details painted in a second color, over the back-ground. A three color combination is a background color with the details painted in two additional colors.
