A Pedagogical Framework for Digital Tools

The overarching objective is to determine how are students using technology to apply learning and demonstrate conceptual mastery?

For the presentation we chose to use a framework based on the three concepts:◦ Monological teaching◦ Dialogical Teaching◦ Polyphonic Teaching

The next slide describes each concept listed in the book pgs 135-139.

Monological Teaching is based on Wittgenstein’s idea that the teacher is the expert and knowledge is received from the teacher. The teacher defines clear learning objectives relevant to the subject matter.

Dialogical Teaching occurs when student learning is acquired through case assignments and simulations demonstrating knowledge gained from experience. Gaining experience is the key element constructing problem-solving ability.

Polyphonic teaching is based on K.E. Logstrup’s where knowledge is created through equal exchange of many perceptions. Learning occurs through teacher and student joint interaction to produce common knowledge within the field.

What should 21st century learning look like?

Technology that allows authentic learning taking place in various places.

We must move away from an industrial model of instruction

Using web technologies that encourage creativity, collaboration, problem-solving and communication skills

Traditional Teaching Traditional teaching is almost teacher-centered which conflicts with the constructivist approaches to teaching and learning (Brooks, 2002). New trends in teaching and learning seek to enhance student-centered instruction; in which students take responsibilities of their learning in environments that encourage participation, critical thinking, problem solving, variety of activities, group work and meaningful interactions instead of rote memorization.

Ogden, Pyzdrowski & Shambaugh (2014:49) state that the flipped classroom approach to teaching is "a pedagogical design that replaces what typically takes place during a face-to-face lecture (passive transfer of knowledge) with engaging activities and assigns the lecture as homework for students to complete autonomously outside of class".

Social Media Instagram - an online mobile photo-sharing, video-sharing, and social networking service that enables its users to take pictures and videos, and share them either publicly or privately on the app, as well as through a variety of other social networking platforms, such as Facebook, Twitter, Tumblr, and Flickr.

Twitter - an online news and social networking service where users post and read short 140-character messages called "tweets".

Google Classroom - a blended learning platform for schools that aims to simplify creating, distributing and grading assignments in a paperless way.

Class Dojo - a behavior management tool for the classroom. Each student has a profile – complete with their own avatar – to which teachers can assign positive and negative points (or 'dojos') throughout the lesson.

Edmodo - an educational website that takes the ideas of a social network and refines them and makes it appropriate for a classroom.

Google Drive (videos, forms) - a file storage and synchronization service created by Google. It allows users to store files in the cloud, synchronize files across devices, and share files.

Blogspot - a blog-publishing service that allows multi-user blogs with time-stamped entries.

Focus on Essential Skill Sets “The only way schools can place learners into positions to seize opportunities now and in the future is to authentically engage them in learning experiences that are relevant, meaningful” (pg. 145), and allow them to use digital tools.

These skills are aligned with International Society for Technology in Education (ISTE) National Educational Technology Standards (NETS)

Entrepreneurism – enhanced through the use of digital tools to solve problems and create artifacts of learning (i.e., Poll Everywhere, QR codes, Blogs, website design).

Summary of Focus on Essential Skill Sets

“Use of web-based resources, skills, and technology allows students to use real-world tools to solve real-world problems” (p. 147). Digital leadership places strategic focus on developing a culture of teaching and learning that is not only student-centered but empowers learners to construct their own meanings and understandings of concepts by nontraditional means.

29% of smartphone owners use general-purpose messaging apps such as WhatsApp or Kik.

24% use messaging apps that automatically delete sent messages, such as Snapchat or Wickr.

Facebook has the largest percentage of older adult users between the ages of 35 and 64, more than any other social media platform.

Instagram and Pinterest are tied with the largest number of users in the 25-44 age category

Tumblr has the largest percentage of users for those between the ages of 16 and 24

All of the devices and programs have potential. I just prefer to learn one or two new ones at a time instead of focusing on so many. I'd start with Safari Montage to see if I liked using it in my classroom.

Google Classroom and Edmodo Our students want to be creative, collaborate, utilize technology for learning, connect with their peers in other countries, and solve real world problems.

Digital leadership is a mindset and a call to transform a school’s culture into one that unleashes the creativity of students so they can create artifacts of learning that demonstrates conceptual mastery.

This accomplished by allowing students to use real-world tools to apply what they have learned and construct new knowledge.

Change the way students view their devices by changing the language used to refer to them

Attach a specific learning outcome to devices when using them

Develop appropriate support structures that align with current Acceptable Use Policies

Provide professional development and resources to teachers so they can be successful in implementing mobile learning devices

Promote use of student-owned devices for learning during non-instructional time (i.e., during lunch to conduct research for projects, complete homework assignments, and organize notes and belongings).

We need Multiplier leadership across an entire professional community. We must prepare for a future in which we do more with less creating a transformation from within by harnessing the intelligence, creativity, and commitment of the stakeholders in our schools (Wiseman et al, 2013). To achieve this common goal requires a shift in the mindset and behavior to have a widespread impact in the way we lead our teachers expecting students to create, collaborate, communicate, think critically, and solve problems in this digital age.
