• Founded in 1952, HTC is the nation’s largest telecom coop

• HTC has been on the cutting edge of communications

services with a mission to improve the quality of lives in

the communities they serve

• Services offered by HTC include

– Phone – Video – High Speed Internet Access [Fiber, DSL and Cable] – Home Security Monitoring – Business Solutions – Wireless – Tech Connect

About HTC

Page 30: Digital Home Roadmap · Digital Home in Perspective … By the numbers • 5.7 connected devices, on average, in every U.S. Internet connected home (NPD) • 1.5 billion Wi-Fi enabled

Increasing Broadband Appetite [& Speeds]

• HTC has seen consistent growth in residential & business broadband subscribers: – Over 50,000 broadband subscribers.

• Recent growth at nearly 3% per quarter.

– Almost 38,000 broadband subs have cable, so streaming video is almost certainly a given among younger members.

– Almost 32,000 subs have either paid (lite), or free (standard and above) wireless home networking through HTC.

• Cable modem, DSL and FTTH all utilized. – 5 tiers of residential service

• Starting at 1 x1 • Up to 50 Mbps by 10 Mbps • 4 of the 5 tiers include free wireless home networking.

• Moving towards Device Standardization • Through using partnerships like ZyXEL and CSSA • To simplify installs and CPE management • To allow us to better serve our customers • Ease of training and more efficient service calls for our Installation Repair and

Advance Product Support teams

Page 31: Digital Home Roadmap · Digital Home in Perspective … By the numbers • 5.7 connected devices, on average, in every U.S. Internet connected home (NPD) • 1.5 billion Wi-Fi enabled

More Bandwidth - More Fun

Last 6 months have shown first significant growth of 20 and 30 Mbps tiers (over 30% each).

– Have purposely promoted 20 Mbps tier in on-going marketing campaigns.

– Our members are just like everyone else: • Multiple smart phones and tablets per HH

• Netflix & other streaming services account for a significant chunk of our bandwidth usage.

– In 2011, HTC brought tech support in-house 24/7.

Page 32: Digital Home Roadmap · Digital Home in Perspective … By the numbers • 5.7 connected devices, on average, in every U.S. Internet connected home (NPD) • 1.5 billion Wi-Fi enabled

More Connections – More Support HTC Tech Connect to Rescue

Connected Consumers need help with their Digital Homes

• Tested and introducing Tech Connect:

– Virus & malware removal and OS reload by HTC personnel.

– Exploring expansion into phone based support for other connected devices; printers, tablets, gaming consoles, etc. Monthly subscription for unlimited support.

Telcos can serve as “Trusted Advisor and Facilitator”

Page 33: Digital Home Roadmap · Digital Home in Perspective … By the numbers • 5.7 connected devices, on average, in every U.S. Internet connected home (NPD) • 1.5 billion Wi-Fi enabled

Broadband and the Digital Home

Key Lessons Learned

– Don’t be afraid to aggressively market faster broadband speeds • Paying dividends for us

– Free wireless home networking has been a competitive advantage • Some may look at it as a lost revenue opportunity. We have found it

to be a valuable retention tool. • It is almost always cheaper to keep a customer than obtain a new one

– Try new services on a small scale whenever feasible • Our Tech Connect program started as kind of a “last resort” to take

away a common cause of extended support calls. • It was tested via word of mouth from our staff to particular

customers. • Measured response rates, location of respondents and time to repair

during the test.
