Digital devices at Waimea Intermediate
Digital devices play an important role in enhancing educational opportunities for students. At Intermediate, our students are in an area
of transition, from a more supervised and protected Primary School environment, to a more independent College environment. We know that many of our students require assistance in their decision-making
around device use, and we aim to provide them with the opportunity to build on their face-to-face communication skills, as well as make use of
the many digital educational tools available .
Our aim is to teach students how to use digital tools to enhance their learning, through a lens of responsible digital citizenship. Students have
the opportunity to work towards their WIS Digital Passport in their two years with us.
Policies and AgreementsStudents and parents are required to sign a digital device agreement at the beginning of each school year. Our school wifi network is monitored
by Network for Learning, ensuring age appropriate internet filtering. We are able to see who is signed into our wifi network and track their internet use if a situation requires it. Our aim is to teach students to
make positive decisions about their online behaviour.

Office 365 and Google Apps for Education
Students are assigned a Microsoft Office 365 account, which allows them to work and save their work online in their OneDrive (at school and at home if they
have internet access). Students have an email address issued to them, and have a range of Office 365 products available for them to use. Waimea College
uses Office 365, so we aim to provide students with some basic skills and working knowledge of this product before they get to College.
Students also have access to Google Apps for Education, using the same username and password as for Office 365. Our students choose their own
strong password at the beginning of Year 7, and will be shown how to use our digital systems at WIS. They can access their Office 365 and Google Apps
online anywhere, anytime.
The library printer is available for students to use. Start year print balance is $4.00 per student . Print accounts can be topped up via the school office.
Office 365 Login(use this for email and Office apps)
Login from school or homewww.office.com
Google Apps Login(email is redirected to Office 365))
Login from school or homewww.google.co.nz
Username format: [email protected]
All students will be given a username and will set up a strong password at the beginning of Year 7. The username and password is the same for Office 365 and Google. You can help your child to think of a strong password they will
remember, that is at least 8 characters long and includes an uppercase letter, a lowercase letter, a number and a symbol.

School Devices and BYODOur computer suite, situated next to the library, contains 30-35 PC computers. All classes are timetabled to share this resource. Each classroom also has 2 PCs and 8 chromebooks for students to use. A pod of 10 ipads is also available.
BYOD (Bring Your Own Device)● Student devices are not compulsory at Waimea Intermediate. They
do, however, reduce the pressure on our limited resources. ● Students may bring their digital devices to school and use them with
the permission of their teacher. ● Classrooms all have lockable cupboards or cabinets; however asking a
teacher to lock away the device is the responsibility of the student. ● Students are able to access student wifi from 8am-4pm Mon-Fri. For
further information, see our BYOD policy on SchoolDocs.● Students are responsible for their own device. The school is not
resourced to repair technical issues with student owned devices
Computer SuiteOur library and computer suite are open at lunchtimes, from Monday to
Thursday, with a duty teacher present in both the library and computer suite, as well as our librarian on hand to help find a favourite book. Students need
to book a spot in the computer suite, using the booking form on the library desk. They can book for one lunchtime each week. For some students, this
is a great place to meet like-minded friends and chat over a game of Minecraft rather than a game of football.
Personal phones and other digital devices may not be used during break and lunchtimes at school, unless the teacher is present and gives their
permission
