It’s San Francisco in 1966 andwe’re lying in the long grassoverlooking the bay realisingthat life might never get betterthan this. Same year, differentlocation. We’re walking downSt. Mark’s Place in New Yorktowards the Dom, where theVelvet Underground are per-forming this very evening. Post-punk London: pop possibilities, psychedelic outcomes, unsteadyfutures. Connecticut 2004, acollegiate idyll and meetingpoint for Andrew VanWyngardenand Benjamin Goldwasserwhose primordial wigouts arereleased under the nameMGMT.

Lysergic mgmt diethylamide:this music is for those whoknow their Orange Sunshinefrom their Windowpane. Drenchedin pop as much as psychedelia, they don’t need a map andcompass to find the tunes.MGMT formed at WesleyanUniversity in Connecticut andafter some indie activity sooncaught the attention of Columbiawho have so far released thefirst two albums, the aptly-named Oracular Spectacularand Congratulations. Therehave been Grammy nomin-ations (and even a Grammy winfor Justice’s remix of ‘’ElectricFeel’), though these are merefripperies in the face of OwsleyStanley and his pals.

Although their sound hasmorphed considerably over thefirst two LPs, their attitude hasnot. In ‘Song For Dan Treacy’,they show their affection for a

certain type of British song-writer (Treacy’s band TVPersonalities are includedhere), while Congratulations’producer Peter Kember is aformer member of the Spacemen3, the best psychedelic bandever to come from Rugby –who also figure on this verycompilation with the delightful‘Lord Can You Hear Me’.

They are firstly fans of otherpeople’s records, those MGMTboys. You can tell by theimpressive depth of theirselections and by howsympathetic this music soundswhen blended together. Wecan’t overlook the tremendouscontributions of the Englishpsych aristocracy hereabouts. There is the Droolian himselfJulian Cope whose song,‘Laughing Boy’, is taken fromhis finest hour Fried. Thenthere’s the unbearably cultishFelt, featuring the wonderfulLawrence Hayward, with ‘RedIndians’ and Vini Reilly (akaDurutti Column) with the slinky‘For Belgian Friends’. If SydBarrett, Kevin Ayers and theSinging Policeman had beenpresent, the eccentrics of GreatBritain Society would have hada quorum.

But that is not all. Oh no. That isnot all… There’s the other sideof the pond, too. The GraceSlick-led Great Society’s ‘LoveYou Girl’ and Suicide’s MartinRev who weighs in with themagnificently batty ‘Sparks’from 2000’s Strangeworld. Butthen, just when you think

you’ve get them all figured theygo and throw rockabilly heroCharlie Feathers into the ring.To top it all, there’s also theirreading of Bauhaus’ uncharacter-istically beautiful ‘All We EverWanted Was Everything’ for ournow traditional Late night Talescover version. TKO MGMT.

Gently remove your I Was LordKitchener’s Valet army uniform.Take a sip of green tea, lie backon the chaise longue and waitfor the magic carpet to arrive.Let’s take a trip.

O to be wrapped up in a blissfulblanket of paranoia! Lamentingthe metamorphosis of humanityin the Discman age never felt sosweet. Sometimes you stay upworrying late at night and youjust want to give that insomniaa big ol’ cuddly embrace.

One of those songs you feel likeyou’ve heard before. Maybeyou have. We were listening tothis song one time while drivingalong a lonely stretch of stripmalls in northern New Jerseyand I have no idea at all whetherit felt appropriate or not.

This is the version of the songthat was an outtake from“Loaded”. There is an earlierversion of this song that haspretty different lyrics – somestuff about “Insects are evilthoughts”, but no mention of“Malcolm’s Curse”.

I see better than anyone, thatwhat I am writing here are onlythe reveries of a man who has,in youth only nibbled at theouter crusts of The Arts, andretained nothing more than avague and rough image ofthem.

What is the internal calling toramble, to pierce the celestialfilm of youth with green thorns, felt by so many young men?Where does it come from? Theever-enchanting drive to “dowhat one must do.” Whatcosmic essence accords thiscompulsion the power to leavebehind love and simplehappiness, to forcibly twist thecables and cut the cords ofcomfort and bliss in order tomaybe find some new truth orinner understanding? Strap onyour high-heeled pre-teenshoes and leave a scribblednote on the kitchen table on atorn letterhead: “Sorry babe,I gotta be goin. Me and my fluteand my cheap chinese suit.”

Man, it was kind of hard tocover a Bauhaus song. I mean,we don’t really sound anythinglike Bauhaus! I wonder if anyBauhaus fans like MGMT.Should we have covered one ofour more obvious influences? I don’t know, isn’t it “cool”when bands do a cover songthat’s somewhat unexpected?Probably isn’t really that cool toanalyze it after the fact. Betterstop here.

James went nuts one night inBirmingham while we werelistening to this album over andover again in our hotel room.Earlier that evening we hadtaken the iPod stereo intoSainsbury’s, blasting Sir LordBaltimore while waiting in lineto pick up a bottle of FamousGrouse. James had recentlybeen lobbying for the inclusionof wind chimes on stage; hisrequest had been curtlyrefused. Later, back in theroom: “Listen James, listen! They’ve got wind chimes onthis song and it sounds so

beautiful!” Is this mostexemplary use of wind chimeswhat finally pushed him overthe edge?

How one man can so accuratelycapture the feeling of meltinginto a carpet with only a fewdrumb machines and amicrophone I will never know.Effortless style. Fact: A singledrop of Martin Rev’s pre-pre-cum is enough to slowly andpainfully kill 49 Justin Biebers.

A writer writing at night thinksso hard about words and whatthey mean that the words he’sthinking about turn into ghosts. The words start to haunt him. They frighten him and inspirehim. Out of nowhere somethinghappens because of thesedamned words. The words turninto the ghost of the legendaryFrench poet, rebel andadventurer Arthur Rimbaud.Rimbaud or what’s left of himthen helps the writer to putwords in a particular order sothat they tell a story about howthinking about words conjuredup the ghost of Arthur Rimbaud. This ghost story takes the formof an hallucinated biography of
