THE SECOND HIGH throughput satellite (HTS) in the Intelsat EpicNGseries, manufactured by Boeing and equipped with the most advanceddigital payload on a commercial spacecraft, Intelsat 33e will extendIntelsat’s high throughput capacity in both C- and Ku-band from theAmericas to include Europe, the Middle East, Africa, Asia Pacific, theMediterranean and Indian Ocean regions.

Intelsat EpicNG features an exceptionally flexible HTS payload designthat is backward compatible with already deployed user networksglobally. The higher performance, better economics and

simplified access of the Intelsat EpicNG design are built to address anexpected $3.2 billion incremental revenue opportunity related to newdemand for satellite-based infrastructure in the enterprise, wirelessinfrastructure, aeronautical and maritime mobility, government andInternet of Things sectors by the year 2021.

The amount of global data traffic is expected to surge at a compoundannual growth rate of 53 percent from 2015 through year-end 2020. Withincreasing broadband requirements and a growing number ofsmartphone users, the flexible and open architecture of Intelsat 29e,Intelsat 33e and future Intelsat EpicNG satellites will enable fixed andmobile network operators to cost-effectively extend their networks andmeet the surges in broadband demand across the continents.

Select customers have already committed to take advantage of Intelsat33e, some of which include Pakistani Internet service provider SuperNetLimited, African telecommunications providers such as Telkom South Africa,Orange, IP Planet, Vodacom, Dijoubti Telecom, Safarifone and Africell RDCSPRL.; Russian network service providers Romantis and RuSat LLC; andmedia customers including TV & Radio Broadcasting (formerly Televisionand Radio Broadcasting of Armenia), and MultiChoice of South Africa.

COMMUNICATION SERVICE PROVIDERS(CSPs) are in the middle of a hugedigital transformation. With aninflux of over-the-top (OTT) content

providers such as Facebook, WhatsApp,Viber and Skype dominating thecommunications industry, the way we useour phones has undoubtedly changed.

CSPs have found themselves with erodingprofits and now face the question of how tobecome appealing to the consumers in order tokeep up with these digital disruptions. Arecent report from Pyramid Research forecaststhat paid OTT revenue in emerging markets,including Africa and the Middle East, willexpand from US$1.9bn in 2014 to US$6bn by2019, no doubt causing some anxiety withinthe boardrooms of many CSPs.

Increasing usage, increased competitionWith this advent in OTT players and the rise ofniche operators providing increasedcompetition within the space, there is atangible need for much more powerful networkcapabilities. Recent research conducted byTecnotree amongst global operators confirmsthat the industry is aware that change isrequired to bridge the increasing gap betweenOTT competitors and CSPs. The researchrevealed that 75 per cent of respondents hadnoticed increased average revenue percustomer (ARPU) related to digital services overthe past 12 months.

With 69 per cent of operators expecting tosee an increase in digital usage fromcustomers travelling to Europe, the demand fordigital services appears to be on the rise.However, in order to benefit from this increasein usage, CSPs must reinvent their serviceoffering to enhance performance and ensure

data remains in their networks, while alsoensuring that new services are rolled-outquickly to ensure they do not lag behind theirspeedy new competitors. An overwhelming 89per cent of those surveyed believe that OTTproviders can deliver new products in one to sixmonths, whereas 30 per cent of the questionedoperators believe it takes a year for CSPs to dothe same.

Support systems for CSPsOne of the biggest hurdles is in business andoperational support systems (BSS), where ithas never been more important for CSPs to beflexible and agile with their BSS systems toallow them to be responsive and adaptable tochanging market demands and customerneeds. By enhancing and strengthening theirexisting BSS systems, CSPs will be able tolaunch new digital and digital-content servicesfor their customers. However, ongoing BSStransformation efforts to build multi or omni-channel capabilities, while simplifyingbusiness processes and rationalising productcatalogue, remain centred aroundconsolidating existing architecture, usingpurpose-built point solutions or moving to a

virtual/software-defined network. With OTTcompetitors having run away with largesegments of market share, mainly due to theinability of major operators to quickly andefficiently update their legacy BSSinfrastructures, almost half of all operatorsbelieve they need to update their legacy BSSinfrastructure every time they want to delivernew and digital-content services to theircustomers. Yet only 21 per cent have, so far,installed equipment which fully integratesbilling functions within their digital product set.However, the time needed and expense toreplace all, or significant parts, of the stackwith a new BSS present a further challengewith 37 per cent of mobile operators saying ittakes at least a year. What therefore is beingdone to overcome these challenges?

Taking action With a number of digital transformationprojects failing due to the need for legacystacks to be brought into the digital age, aneffective way to combat this is to commerciallymigrate and move your business to the newstack, rather than the technology. It isimportant for operators to understand thatdigital transformation cannot be achieved injust one single area. The overall performanceand objective of the transformation shouldalways be taken into consideration. Operatorswill also need to implement architecture that isbuilt for both agility and evolution.

Operators are starting to take action in theform of a new Partnering Operator Alliance ofnine mobile operators to bring digital or digitalcontent to consumers quicker. Similarly, EErecently partnered with MTV for a new musicservice called TRAX and AT&T’s DirectTV, whichprovides on-demand and live programming, isalso now an OTT service. Along with providingthese bundles, CSPs will have to build and planfor uncertainty within their infrastructure andinnovate at a rapid pace in order to compete.

With the dawn of new technologies offeringcountless possibilities, CSPs will need to beflexible and agile with their BSS systems and have open platforms in place, in order tobe responsive and adaptable to changingmarket demands. �

The retail and distribution sector could be one of the major beneficiaries of Africa’sgrowing confidence in technology - but what does the continent need for the likes ofdelivery drone technology to really take off?

TOMORROW’S TECHNOLOGIES ARE arriving quicker to the retailsector then even the science fiction movies from the eightiescould have predicted. A world where businesses market theirproducts via augmented reality then deliver them via a drone

does not seem light years away in 2016. Maybe Back to the Future IIwasn’t so far off the mark after all (it had pencilled in 2015 for virtualreality, tablet computers and video calls, although we are yet to seean appearance from a hoverboard).

But for now, the retail sector in Africa is less Blade Runner and moredaytime TV shopping channel. According to the United NationsEconomic Commission for Africa (UNECA), 90 per cent of transactionsoccur through informal channels in the African retail market.Formalisation of the sector is expected to gather speed over the comingyears, with IT and connectivity providing the platform for it to flourish.

Moving fast with perishablesThe groceries segment is expected to be a major driver of Africa’s overallretail growth. Choppies Enterprises is Botswana’s leading supermarketchain and is ranked as one of Africa’s fastest growing retailers byDeloitte. According to Choppies CEO Ramachandaran Ottapathu, IT andconnectivity has helped strengthen the distribution of its productsacross Botswana and surrounding countries.

“Technology has helped us a great deal in improving our distributioncapabilities. Particularly in preserving the quality and lifespan of bothfresh and wholesale long-life products,” he said.

In 2014, the company opened a distribution centre in Zimbabwe as itlooks to grow its presence across East Africa, and Ottapathu is keen tosee more technology deployed throughout border controls across Africa.

“Technology can help make clearance at borders more efficient,” hesaid. “Full scanning of trucks and electronic clearance will really help toimprove speed and delivery of products.”

Local expertise counts in Africa’s retail sector, where knowledge ofsupply chains and local suppliers can give local retailers a strongadvantage over multinationals. However, one of the biggest brand namesin the world, Coca-Cola, has been bringing its innovative thinking toAfrica, and has started a pilot project to introduce Wi-Fi enabled coolers.

“We have inserted LED displays on our coolers which enhanceproduct visibility and improves shopper engagement,” said DavidVisser, IT director of Coca-Cola Southern & East Africa.

“We have also launched a project to embed Wi-Fi into some of our coolers.”

Automation across the supply chain Advancements in connectivity and IT are playing a major role in helpingCoca-Cola drive efficiency across its distribution and supply chain. Forexample, the company assists its bottlers with a process called RightExecution Daily (RED), which ensures that its products are displayed inthe correct manner in a range of outlets - from supermarkets and petrolstations to small ‘spaza’ shops. Previously, Coca-Cola’s sales teamswould identify manually if stock was priced at the right point or if it wasdisplayed correctly.

“Now the sales rep just has to take a picture of the cooler or point ofsale and upload it onto the photo recognition app,” said Visser.

“Automatic retail pricing reading, recording and reporting is critical forprice communication and price recommendation. Automatic retailpricing recognition also provides great competitive pricing insight. It hasassisted our system in eliminating human errors, inconsistency andinaccuracy.”

Drones take to the air Looking into the not-so-distant future, some African markets could alsobe the perfect testing ground for drone technology. Amazon haspublically begun showcasing the potential of its conceptual drone-based delivery system, Amazon Air Prime, in Northern American andEurope, but due to a lack of transport infrastructure and more liberal airregulations, there are some very compelling use cases for deliverydrones in Africa. Rwanda, for example, looks set to launch the world’sfirst airport for drones later this year, which will eventually be home to adelivery network of drones that will help deliver medical and emergencysupplies as well as commercial products, such as electronics and e-commerce.

“With delivery drones, a hospital that requires a certain blood type fora transfusion or certain medications to treat an outbreak, can messagethrough to a larger urban area and the equipment may be deliveredquickly and safely,” said Dr Linda Seward, communications officer forthe National Centre of Competence in Research (NCCR) in Robotics.

“But while medical supplies are the obvious target for this, there areplenty of other means - for example if an area doesn’t have goodtransport links then it makes it hard for people who live there to trade -delivery drones can change that.”

From inventory management and automatic retail pricing to futuristicdelivery drones circling the skies, connectivity is the critical andunderlying platform for the retail technologies of today and tomorrow. �

Ahmadou Bakayoko, CEO of Radiodiffusion Télévision Ivorienne (RTI), describes thecompany’s strategy as it enters a new era of liberalisation

AHMADOU BAKAYOKO BECAME thechief executive of RadiodiffusionTélévision Ivorienne (RTI) four yearsago, just after the company had laid

off 300 people, about one-third of its staff, inthe first programme of redundancies in 50years. Bakayoko’s priorities were tointroduce basic management changes and toidentify market needs in terms of theaudience viewing of the two TV stations orlistening to the RTI radio stations.

Once some level of stability had beenattained, audience figures and revenues beganto rise. Ratings went up 30% in three years.

“We were able to grow from a position wherethe company was losing a lot of money to now where we have much improved revenues,” Bakayoko said. “So now I think weare back to normal.”

Nevertheless, Bakayoko is under no illusionthat RTI can afford to be complacent.

“We realise that with increasingliberalisation, there’s going to be increasedcompetition. And with technologicalinnovations, everything here is going to changebecause we have new competitors,” he said.

“For example, my competitors now includeFacebook and Google who are very activemedia players. Ivorians are spending lot of timeon Facebook, a lot on YouTube, and advertiserssee this and are prepared to put advertising ontheir platforms. So there are competingcompanies based in San Francisco or the BayArea in the US, and they are a very differentcompetition compared to what we had before.”

Building a businessWhen asked how he intended to meet thechallenge of these new competitors, Bakayokohas an immediate answer. He said, “It is aboutthe management team; strengthening the teamand training them. We also need to listen to ourclients, the viewers and listeners who are ouraudience, and embrace new technologies.”

Indeed, RTI say their business is built onthree pillars. First are the television stations: theRTI 1 channel that Bakayoko terms a ‘generalist’offering; RTI 2 which specialises in entertainmentand sport; and RTI Bouaké, a regional channelbroadcast from the northern town of Bouaké,Côte d’Ivoire’s second city after Abidjan.

Similarly, the second of the three pillars isradio that covers C1 (a generalist station); C2(entertainment); and the regional RadioBouaké station. The third pillar is the digitalspace, including the www.rti.ci web site;mobile apps, RTI Mobile and Frequence 2; webTV; and social media – Facebook, Twitter,Instagram; YouTube et al.

In our conversation, Bakayoko continuallystressed the importance of the team he hasbuilt around him, including the veterans. Hesaid, “When I came they were not exposed tointernational standards in terms of management,

in terms of expertise. But after a lot of training,after lot of co-production work with internationalcompanies, they are now able to flex theirmuscles and are ready for new challenges.”

Content remains kingIt may be a cliché, but Bakayoko insists that inthis industry, content is king.

He said, “That is true whether you talk aboutbeing on satellite, or on mobile, live orplayback. You still need to have great content.

“Strategy depends on the type of content.Take for example news. Now obviously, we willnever be able to compete with the international,global news channels. We’re never going to havecorrespondent in Misrata, or a correspondent inJakarta – it’s never going to happen.

“That’s why our news is more focused onIvorian news and African news; we havenetwork correspondents throughout thecountry. We are able to be closer to the countryand those issues that concern Ivorians. But weare also determined to report on internationalnews – the focus is going to be on contentmaking sure that we’re very strong in our ability to talk about what’s happening here inCôte d’Ivoire.”

The same is true regarding entertainment.Although there is a healthy appetite for theinternational blockbuster brands like theVoice, American Idol, or the various Got Talentshows, Bakayoko does not hold with the ideaof thinking that the best shows are brought infrom abroad, even if those shows are localised.

He is confident that his company has thetalent to develop their own shows that willprove equally as popular as the big brands,and says that RTI will be launching some by theend of the year. Meanwhile, the company hasdemonstrated that one particular local musicand dance show, now more than10 years old, isstill a firm favourite, even running against themajor international offerings.

RTI has also taken existing shows andadapted them for today’s audiences. Bakayokocited the example of one show that used tofeature a mix of dance and theatre and is nowa dance talent show

“We’ve taken only the dance element,”Bakayoko explained, “and it has been a verybig success. It’s a dance talent show. As youknow, people really like to dance here. So, thisis something of a local programme that we

have developed and that is going forward. It’s alocal programme that caters to the tastes of ouraudience and reflects our way of life.”

Making the most of moneyEqually important for Bakayoko is to developinternational co-productions that allow RTI topunch above its weight with bigger budgets.

Currently, RTI has 15 international co-productions being developed; interestinglyenough, some with local partners and yetothers with some big names in internationalproductions.

Bakayoko explained, “We have lot ofinternational partners. We have two key Frenchplayers, a South African partner, and morerecently agreed a deal with a major Indiancompany. As far as the Indian company isconcerned, for the first time they’re going todevelop a series, an African series, with anAfrican player instead of selling purely Indiancontent.

“So, we have this vision of having like threeto four major international players on theglobal stage to build some very ambitiousprojects while also having three quarters of ouroutput being local content with local players.”

It is clear that RTI has achieved somemomentum in this regard. The industry hasrecognised this in inviting Bakayoko and hiscolleagues to the Marché International desProgrammes de Télévision, (MIPTV), the annualevent in Cannes, France where RTI participatedin the opening session alongside majorinternational players to discuss future TV seriesco-productions.

“We’re now selling to Anglophone marketswith our series being broadcast in Nigeria,Ghana, Kenya. Our strategy is to initiallyproduce high quality content for the Africanmarket,” Bakayoko said.

Clearly, the chief executive sees Ivorian TVformats as an important revenue stream, beingable to leverage local talents.

He observed, “We think that with thecreativity that we have in this country, it’s

possible to imagine that some people fromoutside will be buying our formats, first Africa,then the world.

“The challenge for everybody is the pace oftechnological change. The digital terrestrialtelevision space (replacing analogue), thereplay, the mobile, the 4G; we need to be playingto our strengths with all these aspects at thesame time. We need to know how we’re going tomake money. Everybody is asking thesequestions, and we need to make some bets. Thisis obviously one of the main challenges.

“Also, I would say that for RTI a keychallenge is the liberalisation of the broadcastindustry in Côte d’Ivoire. We are going to see alot of competition, and it will be important toretain our talent, to make sure our people arehappy. These two challenges are at the top ofour thinking.”

But, undeniably, RTI has a head start. Lookingat the viewing figures from June – July 2015, RTI 1TV enjoyed a 72 per cent cumulative eveningaudience share in the key Abidjan and Bouakéurban areas (a combined population of morethan three million TV viewers) with RTI 2 postinga 70 per cent audience share. These figures areregardless of the viewing duration, butcomfortably ahead of France 24 or TV5Monde.

To retain its advantage, RTI will need to meetthe competition of both internationalcompanies, and local players (perhaps inassociation with international companies). Thelanguage barrier is obviously going to make iteasier for Francophone players.

In some regards, what is happening at RTI isa reflection of the new post-conflict optimismthat has taken hold in Côte d’Ivoire. Thatoptimism is demonstrated by RTI’s decision tobuild two additional studios at its Abidjanheadquarters.

Bakayoko said, “I think the interesting thingabout this industry is that it is mix of both artand science. There’s a part of art in what we doand so there is no certainty, but also at thesame time there is some proven scientificmethods that you can use to at least track thesatisfaction of your audience.

“We have a market research team of morethan 40 people analysing the feed back,conducting focus groups etc, and we areinvesting much of our time to listen to whatpeople say they actually want.” �

How Asian research and development is bolstering the process of migration fromanalogue to digital transmission

Chinese technologyboosts Africa’s digital switch

AFRICA’S COMMITMENT TO migrateits broadcast transmission awayfrom analogue and to digitaltransmission technology by June

2015 was, with hindsight, hugely ambitious.And unsurprisingly the deadline wascomprehensively missed. The 2015 globaltarget was set by the InternationalTelecommunications Union (ITU), But as ofAugust 2016 - over a year after the agreeddate - still only a handful of Africa’s 54countries namely South Africa, Mauritius,Botswana, Tanzania, Algeria, Gabon, Kenya,Morocco, Rwanda, Tanzania, Tunisia andUganda and Rwanda have completed or arein the process of completing the changeover.

Other African countries also are in theprocess of migration but the change hithertohas been disappointingly slow. At the DigitalBroadcasting Africa Forum 2016 held this Mayin Nigeria’s commercial capital Lagos, theSecretary-General of the CommonwealthTelecommunications Organisation (CTO),Shola Taylor called on African countries “to putgreater effort at meeting obligations from treatyagreements…and… accelerate the completionof the digital switchover process”.

And now, backed by Chinese support, itlooks as though Africa’s migration to digital isfinally about to gather pace. However, thesystem is expensive for a continent where it isreckoned that at least 100mn households don’teven have access to analogue TV. Africangovernments though are determined toleapfrog the ageing analogue technology to themore efficient digital terrestrial transmissionsystem. Digital involves compressing signals,thereby helping to free up space for morechannels to be broadcast. The benefits includebetter picture quality, more choice for TVprogrammes and services and opportunitiesfor local content programming.

The biggest hurdle is the cost of set-topboxes (STBs) to receive digital TV signals. STBscan cost up to US$20 with monthly charge;free-to-air can cost US$50 while the digital TVitself can cost around US$300. And it is herewhere the Chinese government has expressedits willingness to help. At the July 2016 China-Africa Media Cooperation Forum held inBeijing, Jiang Jianguo, China’s minister of theState Council Information Office, said that hiscountry would support Africa’s digital migration

process - backed by a US$10bn China-AfricaDevelopment Fund - and share its experience indigital transmission.

Much of China’s support will be throughChinese technology firms. One of these,StarTimes, has pioneered a low cost model ofdigital migration in Africa by introducingcheaper STBs. To-date, the firm boasts of 90per cent market share with over eight millionsubscribers. The company has licenses andhas established companies in 30 Africancountries including Nigeria, Kenya, Tanzania,South Africa, Uganda, Democratic Republic ofthe Congo, Mozambique, Rwanda, Burundi,Guinea, Madagascar, Malawi and CentralAfrican Republic, among others. Furtheragreements were signed in June with Ethiopia,Ghana, Zimbabwe, Angola and Gabon. InUganda, analogue transmission was switchedoff in the capital Kampala last June and digitaltransmission is being rolled out to other partsof the country in phases. According to Ugandanmedia, Kampala, Jinja, Masaka and Mbararahave so far been covered and at least 17 siteswill be covered by the end of this year, therebygiving Uganda 70 per cent coverage.

The Chinese telecom company Huawei hasalso signed agreements with a number ofAfrican countries aimed at assisting the moveto digital technology. On July 19, it signed aCooperation Contract with South Africa’s

Department of Telecommunications and PostalServices (DTPS) to launch the first ‘innovationand experience’ centre in Africa. The US$5mncentre will showcase futuristic ICT productsand solutions that will provide ICT stakeholderswith a better understanding of the latest ICTsolutions. Among other things it is equippedwith 5G/4.5G wireless communicationtechnologies, VoLTE & VoWiFi, Transmission,Cloud Service and a Date Center.

Indigenous innovationMeanwhile, Nigeria which together with SouthAfrica managed to successfully negotiate withthe ITU for a late 2017 deadline for its digitalswitch over, has taken a major step forwardaway from analogue. In June, RlgCommunications Nigeria Ltd - a subsidiary ofRlg Communications the Dubai headquarteredGhanaian ICT firm and first indigenous Africancompany to assemble laptops, desktops andmobile phones - won the contract tomanufacture and supply digital STBs. It will doso from its state-of-the-art manufacturing plantin Nigeria’s Osun State from where it currentlyproduces devices for Airtel Nigeria.

The contract is for the pilot phase of themigration that is being executed by theTelevision Enterprises Limited, a subsidiary ofNigeria’s National Television Authority (NTA). RlgCommunications has also been contracted byother private companies to manufacture STBs.

The capital for transitionAfrica still has far to go. Most countries inEurope, Asia and America have already shiftedto digital transmission. At the 6th AfricanDigital TV Development Seminar held in BeijingAfrican Union Commission deputy chairperson,Erastus Mwencha warned that Africa risksbeing a ‘faceless continent’ of mere consumersand victims of ‘digital colonisation.’ And evenwith generous Chinese financial support themigration will be costly. As StarTimes founderand president, Pang Xingxing, said, “Youcannot digitise without capital. The transitionprocess is capital-intensive.” That said, there isno going back. As Rwandan President PaulKagame said digital migration is part of the‘fourth industrial revolution’ and Africa needsto get on board the fast train. �

FROM DIFFERENT LOCATIONS to the wide range of differentfeature areas that reflect the very latest trends andtechnologies impacting the industry, IBC has never beenafraid to be a pioneer and reflect the needs of the industry

that drives it. Over the years it has championed and helped promotemany new technologies, ensuring that its 55,000 attendees every yearcan research and learn about the very latest disruptors that may affecttheir business in the future. Of course, there weren’t always 55,000attendees but that figure has grown 14% over the past five years, animpressive growth rate given some of the wider economic issues thathave affected this industry and many others. This year IBC continuesto grow. Recently it has been able to take advantage of some majorexpansion works at its Amsterdam RAI home that have beenundertaken to add further capacity to what is already one of Europe’sleading venues. This was a necessary change as in the same five yearperiod from 2010 to 2015 the number of exhibiting companiesattending the show has risen over 25% from 1,337 to 1,678. For 2016a new hall joins the number of carefully themed and curated areasthat encompass the IBC Exhibition, meaning that visitors caneffectively walk from one end of the industry to the other - as long asthey have the stamina! The new hall joins the lengthening list offeature areas and special exhibits examining different aspects of theindustry, many of which would have been hard to envisage 10 yearsago, never mind 50. Last year, for example, IBC introduced threebrand new areas into the show mix. The Technology in Action Theatreexplored industry case studies in a free to attend theatre; the IBCLaunch Pad was a special area that was reserved for first time IBCExhibitors; while the innovative IBC Hackfest saw coders, developersand more compete to spec out a new product and compete for a€5000 prize fund. All of these features will be returning with excitingnew developments in 2016.

Industry representationWith a conference from 8 to 12 September, and an exhibition from 9 to 13September, IBC represents an industry in an unprecedented state of flux, inwhich internet players are coming to TV and TV is moving to the web,defending the status quo is no longer an option. While traditional broadcastand pay TV models convulse with unprecedented disruption the best tacticmay be to break convention and innovate a way to prepare for the future.

In the digital era, it is necessary to look for the right partners to moveyour business forward and future-proof it, particularly for youngerviewers. The IBC Leaders' Summit will look at how and what strategicstakes and partnerships are necessary and where smart businessshould be investing. It's not justthe technology, media creatives are still wrestling with the potential foreveryday genres such as documentary, drama and live sport.Psychologists are having a field day trying to understand its sensoryimplications and potential health risks. Even marketing people don'tknow how popular the headsets might be, remembering the glasseswhich contributed to the 3D boom-and-bust only a few years ago. Offering ‘true’4K/UHD waveform analysis, the Ultra XRprovides all traditional test and measurementtools expected - picture monitor, true 4Kwaveform monitor, vectorscope, histograms,BT.709/BT.2020 CIE gamut charts,sample/pixel monitor, video timing, audiometers and video/audio/ANC statusinstruments, all provided as standard for SD to4K resolutions.

Alongside these tools, the Ultra XR alsoprovides support for 12-bit 4:4:4 SDI input

formats in YCbCr, RGB, and XYZ, Wide ColorGamut RGB - ITU-R BT.2020 and High DynamicRange (HDR) inputs - ST2084 / PQ and HybridLog Gamma.

Complementing the XR, the Ultra 4K ToolBox, offers tools for product design and 4Ksystem infrastructure testing to help 4Kequipment manufacturers develop and debug4K applications with confidence. The mature4K Tool Box has been shipping since summer2015 and provides comprehensive diagnosistools such as 12G-SDI Eye & Jitter analysis andfull raster-video capture and playout (includingANC information).

Both the Ultra XR and the Ultra 4K Tool Boxoffer support for an impressive array of deliverymethods and video formats, covering SD-SDI to12G-SDI, HDMI and DisplayPort.

MAHINDRA COMVIVA, THE global mobilitysolutions provider has announced the release of the new and upgraded mobiquityWallet 2.0.

The second generation of mobiquity Walletwill offer digital wallet providers the flexibilityto adapt quickly to evolving customer needs,meet business and regulatory expectationsand focus on monetisation strategies, thecompany said.

An updated version of Mobiquity Wallet,which was launched in March 2014, the newdigital wallet platform delivers support for QRcodes, bluetooth, NFC and host cardemulation (HCE).

Mobiquity Wallet 2.0 aims to empowerbanks, operators, financial institutions andmerchants to adopt a digital strategy suited totheir markets and provides a secure, featurerich digital wallet solution offering bothremote and proximity payments.

Commenting about the new service,Mahindra Comviva senior vice-president andhead of mobile financial solutions SrinivasNidugondi said, “The key to a vibrant, viablemobile based payments system is a robustplatform that underpins its business needsand operations and is agile enough to respondto changing market dynamics on the go.”

PRAEKELT FOUNDATION, WHICH is workingtowards a technological evolution in low andmiddle income countries, launched a newchatbot for Messenger integrated into theSouth African Nation Department of Health’sMomConnect, at the 21st International AIDSConference in Durban. The bot will provide mothers a more

affordable, engaging way to access the stage -based messages currently provided by thetechnology’s SMS services. The newestinnovation in messaging bots unlock the abilityto provide personalised, interactivecommunication akin to talking to a humancustomer service or sales rep, but at scale formuch cheaper than call centers.“We focus on providing innovative and
